We are introduced to WeChat (or Weixin, to go by its Chinese name) in the New York Times as the following: Just three years after being introduced in China, Weixin [WeChat] has nearly 300 millio n users — a faster adoption rate than Facebook or Twitter — giving the app a dominant p osition in what is now the world’s biggest smartphone market. A user had also listed the features she likes in WeChat in a blog post on TheNextWeb. 1. We classified social media into three groups this week. Based on your experience, (or what you’ve read so far), into which category (or categories) do you think WeChat would fall under? Briefly, why? 2. Some of the discussion this week was along the lines of switching costs. Briefly, what are the switching costs for WeChat? Are they high or low? 3. A further part of our discussion was on the nature of social ties, whether they are strong or weak. In your view, what kind of ties, strong or weak, are best encapsulated by WeChat? Are they different from those we primarily saw in Facebook? 4. Particular to the current Lunar New Year festivities, WeChat had introduced a new feature last year where traditional red giftenvelopes with money could be exchanged virtually through their service. In your view, what kind of ties, strong or weak, did WeChat exploit here in this feature? Points to note: 1.
