Today is the first lesson that I conducted for this week. The skill that I am focussing is the writing skills. Based on the scheme of work given, I need to teach the students on information transfer in non-linear text. Thus I have designed a lesson which focussing on information transfers as well as creating poster. I started off the lesson by showing them an example of notice and ask them whether they are familiar with notice. This is to give a brief view to the students on what they are going to write during the practice phase. I found out that the set induction is a bit bored as it does not attract the students to focus on the lesson taught. The students are not interested with the notice and thus I think that my set induction is not suitable to be done in the classroom. I should have come with interesting and fun activities such as solving puzzle or hangman game to draw the students’ attention and focus towards my lesson. For the presentation part, I used a passage and write it in the display sheet. I have introduced the passage to the students and read the passage aloud. The students will then repeat after me. I found out that the students are participating very well during this stage. Then, I asked questions regarding the passage to the students in verbal form. This is to ensure that the students understand what they are reading. Besides, I did called some representative to help me to underline the correct answers on the display sheet pasted on the board. In my opinion, this idea works as the students are answering all the questions given. I can see that this lesson is engaging as the students are given chance to participate in the lesson. However, some of the students do not understand what I have taught and I call few of them to repeat what their friends have said before. Today is the first lesson that I conducted for this week. The skill that I am focussing is

the writing skills. Based on the scheme of work given, I need to teach the students on

information transfer in non-linear text. Thus I have designed a lesson which focussing on

information transfers as well as creating poster. I started off the lesson by showing them an

example of notice and ask them whether they are familiar with notice. This is to give a brief

view to the students on what they are going to write during the practice phase. I found out

that the set induction is a bit bored as it does not attract the students to focus on the lesson

taught. The students are not interested with the notice and thus I think that my set induction

is not suitable to be done in the classroom. I should have come with interesting and fun

activities such as solving puzzle or hangman game to draw the students’ attention and focus

towards my lesson.

For the presentation part, I used a passage and write it in the display sheet. I have

introduced the passage to the students and read the passage aloud. The students will then

repeat after me. I found out that the students are participating very well during this stage.

Then, I asked questions regarding the passage to the students in verbal form. This is to

ensure that the students understand what they are reading. Besides, I did called some

representative to help me to underline the correct answers on the display sheet pasted on

the board. In my opinion, this idea works as the students are answering all the questions

given. I can see that this lesson is engaging as the students are given chance to participate

in the lesson. However, some of the students do not understand what I have taught and I call

few of them to repeat what their friends have said before. However, I think that this stage

can be improved by introducing some vocabulary to the students at the beginning of the

lesson. Some of the words might be difficult for them thus they have difficulty to understand

the passage. By introducing the vocabulary, it can help to increase the students

understanding of the passage and it will directly help them in answering the questions

provided.

For the practice part, I distributed a task sheet for each student and ask them to

complete the task sheet by referring to the passage that I have pasted on the board. As they

were completing the task, I walk around and find out if they need help. I did ask the students

to help their friends. After few minutes, I pasted the answers on the board and check the

answers together with the students. Although this activity is quite boring as it is a kind of

drilling but I think it is suitable for the students’ level. I can see that they are having problem

even to transfer the information into the blanks provided. Thus I think this activity is relevant

to their level. However, I should think of another way to check the students’ answer as some

of them are not paying attention and they do not even check their answer. This might

happen because the way I presented the answer is not interesting. Maybe I should not paste

the answers directly on the board and come out with simple activities that can involve the

students.

During the production stage, I ask the students to sit in their groups and they need to

come out with a poster related to ‘Self-Protection’. During this stage, I can see that some

groups are very cooperative and they work as a group however, I can see some of them are

not participating and I have to remind them to work as a group. In my opinion, it is good to

have a group work but the teacher should be smart in controlling the class to ensure the

students are doing their work quietly. However, there are times when I lose control of the

class. I think I have to work on the class control and find ways to handle the students. During

the process of making poster, I was amaze with some of the students’ art work. I found out

that a few students who used to not paying attention in the class, work very hard for the

poster. Thus I can definitely say that it is the teacher’s job to create a lesson that can suit

each and every student’s need and interest. This is a new challenge for me to come out with

various interesting activities so the students will participate in the lesson.

For the closure, I sum up the lesson by recalling the things that I have taught on the

day. Due to the limited time, I just roughly summarize my lesson and collect the students

work to be marked and pasted at the back of the class. I should have managed my time well

and thus I will have enough time for the closure. Another interesting ways can be done to

end the lesson such as by conducting a short quiz or completing a crossword puzzle.

All in all, I managed to carry out the lesson that I have planned. However, there are

many things that can be improved to increase the effectiveness of the lesson and engage

the students with the lesson.
