It is the celebration of Christ's tri- umphant entry into Jerusalem where scripture tells us he is destined to suffer in the hands of the Chief priests and Eld- ers. The story started with the crowd in Jerusalem receiving Jesus like a pop star, acclaiming him as the king. They cried out, 'Hosanna to the Son of David.' By the end of the week, their “hosannas” turned out to be an adulation meant to de- ceive gullible minds. The chief priests and elders manipu- lated the crowd to force Pilate to execute Jesus, the spotless Lamb and the King of eternal glory while asking for the re- lease of Barabbas the notorious criminal as we shall hear on Good Friday how they would shout, "Tolle! Tolle! Crucifige Eum! (Away with him, crucify him). While being persecuted, Jesus hardly opened his mouth because he knew that it was a mission to be accomplished for the salvation of humanity including his persecutors. In spite of his foreseen gross victimization and injustice by his peo- ple, he went ahead to institute the great legacy of love for us. On the day before he died, Holy Thursday, he instituted the Priesthood and the Holy Eucharist as a sign of his love for the world. On Good Friday, he continued to show love even in his agony when he cried out, 'Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing', at the same time promising paradise to a criminal who testified to His innocence. His last words were, "It is Finished " signifying the completion of his mission. The darkness that enshrouded the whole world by the agony of Good Friday was dispersed by the light of the risen Christ (Lumen Christi) symbolic in the Paschal Candle of the Holy Saturday Night. During this holy night, catechumens are baptized unto the death of Christ and are prepared to rise with him unto new life. We are invited also to renew our baptismal commitment to faith while we await the resurrec- tion of Christ on Easter morning. This is the summary of what this week is all about. Today in every part of the world, we have faces of Ju- das Iscariot, Pilate, chief priests, and elders who think they are free to act otherwise, betraying Christianity or sitting on the rights of innocent victims. They may be the self- acclaimed ‘staunch’ members of the Church or the so called influential members of the society, ravenous politicians whose wealth has become their god. They may also be the commoners who, for fear of falling prey to these ‘big men’ and ‘big women’ in the society, decide to compromise their freedom of conscience. Let us not compromise the ideals of the Gospel in the face of all the worldly distractions and dan- gerous ideologies. Remember, Jesus did not bow to the pres- sure mounted on him by his tormentors to deny his claims as the Son of God. Rather He stood firm and God glorified him as He seats at His right hand. All our Christian practices are for this same reward. May the merits of the Passion, death, and resurrection of Christ bring us a new hope that all our desires of gaining heaven which we labor for may be fulfilled. -Fr. Felix Unichi

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW? Parents and teachers can prevent abusive behaviors Children, in particular, may have diffi-culty channeling their feelings appro-priately and can easily pick up nega-tive or demeaning cues given by adults around them. Given the diversity of America’s schools, some stu-dents may become targets of hostility and blame. Bul-lying and harassment are never acceptable, but they can be especially damaging at this critical time in our nation’s history. Parents and school personnel need to be prepared to quickly and effectively prevent and stop abusive behaviors that are directed toward any stu-dents.

A National Tra-gedy: Promoting tolerance and peace in children) es-criba a [email protected].
