BACF Grants Top $1 Millionthe Barrington area community foundation (Bacf) announced the winners

of the 2014 BACF grants on May 1. BACF's total grants to community chari-

ties have topped $1 million, which includes the 2014 grants of $153,000. The

first grants given in 2000 were for $5,000. Each year the Foundation grants 5

percent of its net asset value averaged over five years. Total grants have now

reached $1,147,390, while net assets have reached approximately $4.5 million.

This was the 15th year in which the awards have been given. For more infor-

on saturday, MarcH 1, Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC) held its spring fundraiser “Get Groovin’ Get Givin,” at Biltmore Country Club with approximately 125 people in attendance raising more than $15,000. Attendees dressed in ‘70s gear and danced to ‘70s style disco music DJ’d by Keith Christopher Entertainment. Two silent auctions that guests could bid on were more than 75 bottles of wine with a wine fridge, and a Dancing Diamond Necklace donated by Long & Co. Jewelers. All of BJWC’s fundraising efforts go towards community causes such as: Barrington Youth & Family Services, Barrington Giving Day, Wellness Place, WINGS, and scholarships for BHS students. sMart farM will Host its annual spring vegetable seedling sale on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the hoop house located on the Good Shep-herd Hospital campus. Seedlings will include a variety of tomatoes, an

assortment of peppers, various types of squash, lettuce, kale, eggplants, and cucumbers, as well as types of herbs including basil, thyme, oregano, mint, and parsley. All seedlings are organic and locally grown from non-GMO seeds. Proceeds from the sale will assist Smart Farm in educating the community about the benefits of sustainable gardening and healthy eating, and help support its efforts to grow produce for those in need. on saturday, feBruary 22, 138 chess players competed at the 6th annual Hough School Chess Tournament “Chess Without Borders,” where 100 percent of the proceeds were do-nated to two charities adopted by the program. Almost $7,000 was raised to benefit Meher’s education (a girl who lives in the slums of Delhi, India), and to provide support for the Maggie Gruber Computer Center located in Delhi, India. in noveMBer of 2013, Kathy Gregg became the new director of Philanthropy and Major Gifts at Wellness Place, a cancer resource and support center located in Palatine. Gregg seeks people in the community to invest in the organization and support the future of Wellness Place. “I am looking for people that are interested in the mission of Wellness Place,” said Gregg. “What excites me most is getting out there and talking to people about this organization.” Wellness Place programs and services help individuals manage emotional and physical responses to treatment, sort through options and side effects, formulate questions for doctors, and communicate matters to family and employers. Lions Club Continues Fourth of July Tradition

This year, Barrington is seeing a small change in its 4th of July festivities. The Barrington Lions Club will now handle the “Brat Tent”. This event has grown tre-mendously over the last decade: moving from a small area in the business parking lots on Main Street to the current location in the north commuter parking lot; in-creasing the number of children’s activities during the days; adding an early band so that most evenings now offer a lineup of two bands; and expanding the menu to include legendary brats, hot dogs, and more.

Several hundred hours are spent planning, orga-nizing, and doing prep work. The Lions Club felt this tradition was too important to the community to not have it continue this year. “We want to continue the tradition of the Barrington community coming together to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day with good food, great music, and lots of fun,” said Lion Ken Kudla. “From the small beginning back in 1985, the event continues to develop, and we look forward to a wonderful 4th of July Festival. See you there!”

GiGi’s PlayHouse is HostinG its 10th annual “Dash for Down Syndrome” on Sunday, June 8 at the Sears Center/Village Green in Hoffman Estates. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5k run beginning at 8:45 a.m. The 1-mile walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the kids “Dash for Down Syndrome” immediately following.
