Cultural space retaining an identity of the historic town: A case study of Taiping town in Perak, Malaysia Introduction: Apparently, historic town’s conservation is important for local people to responsive and subtle in protecting the valuable relics and prolongs a place’s identity. Regarding to UNESCO intangible glossary, cultural space connotes as a physical or symbolic space for people meet to enact, share or exchange social practices or idea (Zanten, 2002:4). Hence, the conception of cultural space means to accumulative of the physical setting, cultural entities and people emotional feelings to a social spaces attachment. Ahmad (2006:53) denotes culture demarcated as “a whole complex of distinct spiritual, intellectual, emotional and material features symbolised by a particular society or social group and its way of life”. In another words, the culture phenomenon is indispensables to indicate how people congregate with the built environment and other places (Mina and Mustafa, 2011). Wherein, the underpinning social-cultural aspect, the tangible and intangible attributes enables to sustain an old town’s identity (Ahmad Basri and Shuhana, 2008). Henceforward, the role of cultural spaces in remaining an urban identity in the historic town is vitality to discuss in this paper.
