The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh world-wide appeal to raise £1-5m for an endowment fund

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has launched a world-wide appeal to raise £1"5m to set up an endowment fund. This is the first time in nearly 500 years of its history that the College has appealed publicly for money.

Already nearly £600 000 has been contributed largely by support from within the 'family' of the College's Fellows and Licentiates in 92 countries. The Council of the College has decided that it is now appropriate to broaden the appeal and to approach trusts, industry and the general public.

In launching the appeal, the College emphasizes that it is not in financial difficulties. Although it is the oldest of the four Royal Surgical Colleges--it was set up in 1505--there has never been an endowment fund.

Some of the money which it is hoped will be raised will be used to provide living accommodation for surgeons in training and for surgeons visiting Edin- burgh for further study and experience. This residential accommodation will be situated in Hill Square, behind the College. Discussions are proceeding actively with the District Council and with interested amenity bodies and, when these are concluded, the College will make public its intentions concerning development in this historic Georgian Square. The intention is to improve the facilities for training surgeons by providing extra space for the library and rooms for examinations and scientific meetings.

In connection with the appeal, Mr James Ross, past President of the College and Chairman of the Appeal Committee, has said: 'Few people in their lifetime can be indifferent to the surgeon's skill. Whether we like it or not, sooner or later, most of us find ourselves, or those nearest and dearest to us, urgently requiring surgical attention. Modern surgery can now accomplish much but this success has not been achieved by simply waving a magic wand. It is the result of a long and painstaking education. We wish to continue this education at the highest possible standard and we appeal to everyone to help us.

Contributions should be made in any currency to: The Appeal Fund Office, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, EHS.
