References and Citations

Word 2007 off er s great tools  for citing sources, creating a  bibliography, and managing the

sources. The fir st step to creating a ref erence list and citations  in a document is to choose the

appr o pr iate style that you will  be using for for matting the citations and ref erences.

Style

To choose a publishing style:

y  Click the References Ta b on the R ibbon 

y  Click the dr o p down  box next to Style in the Citations & Bibliography Gr ou p

y  Choose the appr o pr iate style.

Citations

To insert a citation in the text portion of your document:

y  Click the References Ta b on the R ibbon 

y  Click the Insert Citation Button on the Citations & Bibliography Gr ou p

y  If this is a new source, click New Source 

y  If you have already created this source, it will in the dr o p down list and you can click 

on it

y  If you are creating a New Source, choose the type of source ( book , article, etc.)

y  Com plete the Create Source Form 

y  If  you  need additional fields,   be sure to click the Show All Bibliography

Fields check  box 

y  Click OK  

Placeholders

Placeholder s can  be utilized when there is a ref erence to  be cited,  but you do not have all of  

the infor mation on the source. To insert a Placeholder:

y  Click Insert Citation 

y  Click AddNew Placeholder

Manage Sources 

Once you have com  pleted a document you  may need to add or delete sources,  modif y

existing sources, or com plete the infor mation for the placeholder s. To Manage Sources:

y  Click the References Ta b on the R ibbon 

y  Click theManage Sources Button on the Citations & Bibliography Gr ou p

y  Fr om this menu you can Add, Delete, and Edit Sources (note, you can preview the

source in the  bottom pane of the window

Bibliography 

y  To add a Bibliography to the document:

y  Place the cur sor in the document where you want the  bibliography

y  Click the References Ta

 b on

the R ibbon

 y  Click the Bibliography Button on the Citations & Bibliography Gr ou p

y  Choose Insert Built-in Bibliography/Works Cited  or Insert Bibliography 

Insert Footnote 

y  Some types of academic wr iting utilize footnotes. To insert a footnote:

y  Click the References Ta b on the R ibbon 

y  Click Insert Footnote (or Insert Endnote depending on your needs)

y  Begin typing the footnote

Track Changes

Track Changes  is a great f eature of  Word that allows you to  see what changes have  been 

made to a document. The tools for track changes are found on the Reviewing ta b of the R ibbon.

Begin Track Changes 

To keep track  of  the changes you¶ll  be mak ing to a document, you  must click  on Track 

Changes icon.

To start Track ing Changes:

y  Click Review Ta b on the R ibbon 

y  Click Track Changes 

y  Make the changes to your document and you will see any changes you have made.

Document Views 

There are four ways to view a document af ter you have tracked changes:

y  Final ShowingMarkup: This shows the document with the changes dis played

y  Final: This shows the changed document, without the changes dis played

y  Original ShowingMarkup: The or iginal document with the changes dis played

y  Original: The or iginal document without any changes.

To change the view, click the appr o pr iate choice in the Track ing Gr ou p of the Review Ta b on 

the R ibbon.

The Show Markup f eature allows you to view diff erent items (comments,  for matting, etc.)

and choose to view diff erent author s¶ comments.

Accept or Reject Changes 

When you view the changes  in a document you can either choose to accept or reject the

changes. This allows you to review the document  by each change to accept or reject each change.

Comments 

The New Comments  icon also lets you add comments to the document. To add a new

comment, put your cur sor where you would like to add the comment and click on New Comment.
