REFERENCE CODE FOR LABELLING EQUIPMENTS IN EHS

In view of standardizing the numbering of EHS equipments and in

O'l'der to make sure that identical apparatus has the same coding, this

note defines the typ.ical structure of labels which should be used, It

indicates the already existing elements of the dictionary which will have

to be updated by the designers, according to their needs.

l, IDENTIFICATION CODE

It includes 7 charactexis divided into 3 subsets:

2 characters (letter followed by letter or digit) defining the

system:

Ex. Ml superconducting magnet

BC cameras on R.CBC

2 letters. specifying either the element or the type of

measurement,

Ex, pp primary puanp

LE level measurement

3 digits which have to be chosen by the designer in order to

complete the code.

2. DICTIONARY TO BE USED FOR EHS EQUIPMENT

2.1 System and sub-system

The two characters used for defining the system and sub-system are

identical to those used for cable numbering (ref. 1) after a recent

revision of the original proposal.

Table 1 shows the matrix of possible combinations. The vertical

entry indicates the first letter, the horizontal entry the second letter

or digit, The codes already used by designers of EHS equipment are

shown in the matrix.

2.2 Elements

Some of the elements have already been given a two letter code by

several designers. The same set of characters should be used for

identical equipment installed in other parts of EHS.

According to the needs, one can use a code which defines either the

type of measurement or the apparatus which deals with this signal

(sensor, controller, transducer).

It is indispensable for a given code not to be used with different

equipments. Table 2 gives the list of the combinations of characters

which have already been chosen.

2.3 Numbering

As mentioned earlier, any set of three digits may be selected by

designers, However, if the number of elements is small, it may be

desirable, especially for operation purposes, to define the points of

the installation with a given number and then to associate this number

to the various equipments related to measurements at this point.

Ex. level measurement LE 203

level indicator (same point) LI 203

fault indicator ( II II ) LF 203

level controller ( II II ) LC 203

Moreover, it may be handy to use the most significant digit in

order to distinguish identical equipment in symmetrical positions.

Ex. Strain gauge No 5 on coil No 2: 205

Pneumatic valve No 9 on vacuum system No 1 109

Page 3: REFERENCE CODE FOR LABELLING EQUIPMENTS...CERN/EF/EHS/TE 78-8 12 June 1978 AGM/fv REFERENCE CODE FOR LABELLING EQUIPMENTS IN EHS In view of standardizing the numbering of EHS equipments

- 3 -

If no special logic in the numbering is desirable or possible

in view of the total number of elements, the equipm(~nt should he numbered

in a sequential way.

The number of digits should ·,1ot be increased 'beyond J or indices

added in order to allow a more systematic numbe.ring.

2.4 Examples

BV PV 103

(pneumatic valve No 3 in vacuum system No l on RCll~)

Ml SE 205

(strain gauge No 5 on coil No 2 of the superconducting magnet)

3. REMARKS

The aim of proposing an identification system for the EHS

equipment is to simplify the design, operation and maintenance work

by selecting a unique code which may use mnemonics without requiring

an unnecessary length.

The information should appear on the drawings, the synoptics and

the equipment itself. However, the 2 first characters may not be

repeated for each element when there is no ambiguity concerning system

and sub-system. For instance, on a panel dedicated to RCBC vacutnn

system, equipment could be labelled PV103 (pneumatic valve), DP017

(diffusion pump) without repeating the leading BV.

Standard symbols reconnnended by CERN are shown 1H the document

on "normalisation" ref. 100 (75-04).

In the case of duplication of displays for the same measurement in

two different places (ex. platform and control room), it is suggested

to use thP same 7 character code for both and to give complementary

information to indicate that several apparatus exist.

- 4 -

The reference codes which do not yet exist in the dictionary

and which will have to be created during development of the system will

have to be sent to CERN (see attached list of persons) in order to be

filed.

Updatings of the dictionary will be addressed to the different

designers at regular intervals.
