REFERENCE BOOK FOR CEREMONIAL ASSISTANTS

This book has been prepared as a teaching tool and a reference for Ceremonial Assistants. The purpose is not to replace the Daughters of the Nile Ritual, Floor Charts, Protocol, or Manual of Procedures, but to complement those publications with the traditions that have been passed down from our Founders. Special attention has been given to each character portrayed in the Ritual. Any verbiage within this Reference Book not found within the Daughters of the Nile Official Publications, should be viewed merely as SUGGESTIONS to enhance our beautiful Ceremonies.

Compiled by the 2007 M.A.G.I.C. Team Members Assisting with Growth Integrity Commitment

Choosing a Ceremonial Assistant

The Ceremonial Assistant should be a Past Queen, or a well versed Princess who can work harmoniously with others. She must be able to coach the Officers and encourage their efforts in portraying their characters. This is not the role for someone who is critical and judgmental. The Past Queen or Princess should be chosen who is active in the Temple and regularly attends Supreme Session so that she is cognizant of the new legislation that is enacted each year. She needs to be well versed in the Ritual, Floor Charts, Protocol, and Manual of Procedures, as well as any aspect of the work that is expected of the Temple Officers. She should assist the Queen in making the ritualistic work run smoothly and efficiently during the year. The choice of a Ceremonial Assistant must be someone with whom the Queen can work. She needs to help each Officer during the year, especially if the Officer gives the inclination of confusion as to what is expected of her or is unsure of how she should portray her part. She should be someone who is compassionate and interested enough in our Order to willingly give of her time and talents to help the Temple do outstanding work. She should be willing to carry out the Queen’s instructions and wishes. Note: More than one Ceremonial Assistant may be chosen in addition to multiple prompters.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD CEREMONIAL ASSISTANT

RESPECTFUL By being respectful, the Ceremonial Assistant accepts people as worthwhile. She can show that she is accepting by trying to learn more about the other person’s point of view. She should try not to judge people as they share ideas with her. Respecting someone does not mean that she must agree with what that other person does or thinks. She may disagree but still accept that person as worthy of her help. PUNCTUAL By being punctual, the Ceremonial Assistant sets the example that the expectation of the Officers is that they come to all rehearsals, activities, and Sessions, and they are on time. PATIENT By being patient, the Ceremonial Assistant is exemplifying the characteristic of being accepting. Everyone learns at a different rate and a different way. It will be up to the Ceremonial Assistant to be patient as she develops/suggests the best learning strategy for each of the Officers. By having patience and using encouragement, she will soon discover that she will have a core of Officers that will be motivated to do their best. COMPASSIONATE There may be times when the Ceremonial Assistant will have to be compassionate. A member who has taken the responsibility of an office may discover that family priorities may interfere with her attendance at Nile functions. Her absence may impose a hardship on the performance of the other Officers. If the Ceremonial Assistant is able to put herself in “another’s shoes,” this will help to not be critical or judgmental, but to offer understanding. KNOWLEDGEABLE A Ceremonial Assistant must be active in the Temple and regularly attend Supreme Session so that she is cognizant of the new legislation that is enacted each year. She should be familiar with the Ritual, Floor Charts, Supreme Temple Bylaws, Protocol, and Manual of Procedures. If she is presented with a question she can’t answer, she will know where to find the correct answer. KIND By being kind to others, the Ceremonial Assistant is setting the tone for the interactions of all the members. By extending kindness, the Ceremonial Assistant will receive it in return.

DOS AND DON’TS

DO set the expectation that all Officers and Prompters attend all rehearsals. DO work with the Queen to establish a rehearsal schedule and give the calendar to all Officers and Prompters at the first meeting. This will give them the opportunity to log the dates on their personal calendars and avoid future conflicts. DO refer to the Ritual, Floor Charts, Supreme Temple Bylaws, Protocol, and Manual of Procedures. A Ceremonial Assistant is not expected to know everything. If she is unsure of an answer or would like to verify an answer, she needs to say, “Let’s look it up.” DO focus on the fine print in the Ritual. This leads to an outstanding portrayal of our ritualistic work. DO schedule the rehearsals to meet the needs of the Queen and Officers. Consider having practices with small groups. For example, have the Crescent, Attendants, and Pr. Badoura or the Queen and Pr. Badoura practice without the others so as to fine tune certain performances. DO make the rehearsals meaningful, interesting, and fun. (The Ceremonial Assistant and Queen might want to coordinate a few door prizes for drawings at rehearsals.) DO BEGIN THE REHEARSALS and STATED SESSION ON TIME. Remember the Ceremonial Assistant is setting the example of punctuality. DO practice the correct way of making the Salutation Sign with the Officers. The Ladies of the Household are looking at the Officers for instruction on how to do things. Make sure they are watching it done correctly. DO encourage the Officers to visit with the Candidates before the Ceremony of Initiation begins in order to make them feel welcome and more comfortable. (Pr. Nydia might wish to abstain from this as she needs to portray blindness.) DO announce that only designated Prompters, Ceremonial Assistant(s), Pr. Musician, Pro Tem Officer(s), and member(s) with auditory sensitivity may have an open Ritual at Stated Sessions. DON’T expect the Pr. Marshal to know how to correctly set up the Temple for Session. Take the time to instruct her in the placement of the paraphernalia. At the first practice, the Ceremonial Assistant could take a few minutes and explain to all Officers where paraphernalia is placed and easy ways to remember this information. At the second practice, she could review this information to instill this knowledge. A conscientious Ceremonial Assistant teaches so as to share knowledge and encourage future Ceremonial Assistants.

DOS AND DON’TS (continued) DON’T have the Ladies in Waiting, who have formed a crescent at the foot of the throne to salute the Queen, cut the arc of the crescent off when they begin walking to their seats. Instruct them to follow the flow of the arc all the way through with Pr. Zuliema, the last one in line. This imaginary line of an arc may need to be placed on the floor with tape until the ladies can “see” it and walk it. DON’T have the Officers say, “Your Majesty” during the process of saluting. The salute comes first, THEN the words follow after the Officer has completed her bow and is looking at the Queen. DON’T forget to have a variety of fresh-cut flowers/floral bouquet of various colors and fragrances with at least one red rose, adequate number of white roses, variety of fruit, and a fresh loaf of bread on the day of the Ceremonial. DON’T wait until the day of the Ceremonial to have Pr. Badoura and Pr. Tirzah place the Candidates and pillows behind the Altar. It is imperative that the positioning of the Candidates and pillows behind the Altar be practiced prior to the Ceremonial. This will save time and keep the flow of the ceremony. If you have enough ladies to help, ask for volunteers from the Ladies of the Household to attend a rehearsal so you can practice with people. (Suggestion: Have Pr. Badoura draw a simple floor design of how she plans to place the Candidates and share this with you and Pr. Tirzah.) DON’T have a Stated Session or Ceremonial without music. If you don’t have a Pr. Musician available in your Temple, consider having a CD available to be played. A session without music is dreary indeed. A music CD may be ordered through the Supreme Princess Recorder’s office. DON’T let an opportunity to encourage and congratulate the Officers go by. Each Officer needs a pat on the back to keep her going and to brighten her day. Take time to thank the Officers for their time, energy, and efforts to memorize their parts.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE QUEEN

Reference: 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples (FC) 2013 Ritual Daughters of the Nile (R) 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws (B) 2013 Protocol (P) 2015 Manual of Procedures (M) Traditions passed down from the Founders of the Order and Supplemental Instructions (T/S)

1. The Queen is the presiding Officer. She should remain on the Throne, but is

permitted to descend to the foot of the Throne. Pr. Marshal conducts all Members to the Queen and the Attendants are instructed to bring all items to the Queen when needed. T/S

2. Formal Introductions: when there are visiting Reigning Queens, the Presiding Queen extends her hand to the Reigning Queen and helps her ascend the Throne on her left side. The visiting Reigning Queen is introduced to the Ladies of the Household standing at the Presiding Queen’s left side. She is given the Salutation Sign and a warm welcome and is seated on the Throne when possible; otherwise in a section of chairs reserved for Reigning Queens. FC: 35; T/S

3. Note: In the Opening, the Queen addresses the Pr. Royal, Pr. Royal stands, salutes, and says, “Your Majesty,” THEN the Queen speaks. However, in the Closing, it is different. The Queen says, “Pr. Royal,” and continues to speak and THEN Pr. Royal stands, salutes, says, “Your Majesty” and answers the Queen all at once. R: 18, 31, 95

4. A trick to assist the Queen in remembering which word is used when speaking to Pr. Royal in the Opening versus the Closing when asking about the hour; the Opening is first, so the word is at the beginning of the alphabet – “How”; the Closing word is “What”, which is at the end of the alphabet. R: 18, 31, 95

5. The same principle is used in assisting the Queen to remember if she says “direct” or “instruct” the Lady of the Keys. Direct is used in the Opening (D is at the beginning of the alphabet). Instruct is used in the Closing (I is later on in the alphabet). R: 19, 32, 95

6. Prior to the Ceremony of Initiation, the Queen should ask the Pr. Recorder, “Have any Petitions of Initiation been received since our last Stated Session?” T/S, R-15, M-13, M-8

7. The following tips pertain to the Ceremony of Initiation:

PRIOR to the start of the Ceremonial, the Queen needs to remember to designate the Past Queens to help with the Christening of the Candidates and to help Pr. Royal present the Jewel of the Order, if the number warrants. FC: 62; R: 64, 65, 82; T/S

The Attendants FOLLOW the Queen when walking to the Altar for the Obligation FC: 57; R: 61

The Queen does not speak until she has completed a movement. For example, she removes the veil from the Bible, holds it up, and THEN looks at Pr. Badoura and gives her instructions. R: 63; T/S

The Queen does not drag the veil across the Bible when she picks it up. She lifts it gently from the Bible, and hands it to Pr. Badoura. FC: 61; R: 63

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE QUEEN (continued)

Also, the Queen picks up the rose from the Bible, dips it in the amphora, holds her left hand under the bud as if to catch any water that might drip from the blossom, and THEN begins speaking. FC: 62; R: 64, T/S

Since the christening procedure is not entirely spelled out in the Ritual, there are two SUGGESTED options taught by the Past Supreme Queens. T/S

o Option One – Christening Procedure: After the Queen dips the rose, she holds it as the rose grows. As the Exemplifying Candidate’s left eye is the closer one to the Queen, the Queen gently touches it with the rose, crosses the nose bridge to the right eye and does the same to the right eye. Since she is on the right side of the Exemplifying Candidate, she gently touches the right ear, lowers the rose under the chin, gently touches the left ear, and lightly touches the lips. She then gently holds the rose upon the center of the head with the bud facing the throne.

o Option Two – Christening Procedure: Do not cross the face with the rose. As the Queen faces the Exemplifying Candidate, she takes the rose (held with the blossom up and stem down as it grows) and gently touches the left eye lowering the rose across the cheek and jawbone and under the chin. Then she goes up to the right eye, touches the right ear and once again brings the rose under the chin and then up to the left ear and then lightly touches the lips. She then gently holds the rose upon the head with the bud facing the throne.

After the christening and speech are finished the Queen returns the rose diagonally on the Bible with the rose bud facing the Pr. Chaplain’s station. FC: 62; R: 64

Review with the Past Queens or visiting Reigning Queens who have been asked to assist in the christening, the proper procedure for christening. When they are christening, they DO NOT repeat the words of the Queen, but remain silent. FC: 62; R: 65

After the christening, the rose is placed in the new Member’s right hand. FC: 62; R: 65

The process for breaking the “Golden Links of Fellowship” is as follows: The Attendants PRECEDE the Queen to the Throne. They stop just inside the “Links” allowing the Queen to break the circle by touching the joined hands of the Pr. Banker and Pr. Recorder (who have positioned themselves immediately in front of the Altar and near the foot of the Throne). The Attendants precede the Queen until they are close to the foot of the Throne. The Queen walks slowly in order to give the Attendants time to bow and then she passes through them and proceeds to her place on the Throne. FC: 63; R: 65

When the Queen receives the lace from Pr. Nydia, she examines it and THEN says her part. R: 70

When the Queen receives the basket of flowers from Pr. Zulieka, she looks at them, smells them, and THEN says her part. R: 72; T/S

When the Queen receives the scroll of music from Pr. Zuliema, she opens it, looks at it, and THEN says her part. R: 79; T/S

Page 13: Reference Book for Ceremonial Assistants Egyptian papyrus ...Princess Zenobia Princess Zora Princess Zuliema Princess Musician Attendants Handmaidens/Aides Past Queens Assisting with

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE QUEEN (continued)

The Queen should have each New Member repeat the password to her to ensure that the New Member heard it correctly. FC: 77; R: 93

After the Ceremonial, the Queen has two options for introducing the New Members: M- 59, M-120

o Option One: The New Members stand, give their names, and tell a little about themselves, beginning with the Exemplifying Member.

o Option Two: The Queen introduces the New Members and asks IF any would like to speak. The Past Queen that sits with the Candidates should let them know they might be asked to speak.

In some Temples it is a tradition for the Queen to name the class in honor of someone. For example, during the Supreme Queen’s Official Visit, the Queen could choose to name the class after the Supreme Queen. The Queen would announce the name of the class after the New Members introduce themselves. T/S

After the new Members introduce themselves, the Queen must not forget to introduce the Past Queen(s) who instructed the New Members. She/they was/were not inside the Session Room during Formal Introductions. Give her/them a hearty welcome. It is not necessary to have the Past Queen(s) presented, but may be introduced from her/their seat(s). M-59, M-121

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE JUNIOR PAST QUEEN Reference: 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples (FC pages 8, 9, 25, 59, 77-79) 2013 Ritual Daughters of the Nile (R pages 14, 27, 29, 45, 62-63, 88-93) 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws (B pages B63-64, 68-69) 2013 Protocol (P) 2015 Manual of Procedures (M pages M-54, M-66) Traditions passed down from the Founders of the Order and Supplemental Instructions (T/S)

1. The Junior Past Queen (JPQ) serves as the Prompter for the Queen and Pr.

Badoura, when she is standing at the foot of the Throne during a Ceremonial. She must always have a Ritual with her at Stated Sessions for this purpose. M: 54; T/S

2. She should discuss the cue Pr. Badoura will give to her when Pr. Badoura is standing at the foot of the Throne during the Ceremonial and needs prompting. T/S

3. When the JPQ enters in the Opening, she remains standing until the Pr. Royal seats the Officers. FC: 9; R:29

4. It is a courteous gesture for the JPQ to extend her hand to the Queen as the Queen ascends the Throne during the Opening to help her up the steps to the Throne. T/S

5. The Junior Past Queen exemplifies the Secret Work at every session. The Ladies of the Household depend on her to instruct them well. B: 68

6. When verbally explaining the Grip of the Order, the written Secret Work does not instruct the JPQ to show how to make the grip. The Grip of the Order is demonstrated in the dialogue with the Pr. Marshal. R: 89; T/S; R-91

7. The JPQ assists the Queen in ensuring that the ballot box is clear and there are enough white balls and black cubes before a ballot. She also checks the ballot box(es) with the Queen after all ballots have been cast to witness the result of the ballot. B: 69

8. During the Ceremony of Initiation:

As soon as the JPQ is finished with the Secret Work, she does not sit, but extends her right hand to the Queen. The Queen stands and they descend the Throne together to address the New Members. FC: 77; R: 92

The JPQ advises each New Member that she is demonstrating the Grip of the Order. FC: 77; R: 93

If the Ceremonial is held within a Stated Session, the JPQ only does the Secret Work once – during Ceremony of Initiation R: 14, 27, 45; M-66

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE PR. ROYAL Reference: 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples (FC pages 9-10, 59, 74) 2013 Ritual Daughters of the Nile (R pages 18-19, 21-23, 29-32, 34-35, 42, 56-57, 63, 81-82, 95, 97) 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws (B pages: B63, 64, 69) 2013 Protocol (P) 2015 Manual of Procedures (M pages M-68, M-69, M-88) Traditions passed down from the Founders of the Order and Supplemental Instructions (T/S) The Pr. Royal is second in command of the Temple. She may be called upon at any time to assume the duties of Queen if the Queen is absent. Therefore, she should be knowledgeable of Supreme Temple Bylaws, Protocol, Ritualistic Ceremonies, Manual of Procedures, and the Floor Charts.

1. In the Opening, Pr. Royal raps the gavel and the Officers, except Pr. Marshal and

Pr. Royal, are seated. FC: 9; R:29 2. The Pr. Royal prompts the Queen when she is at the Altar for the Obligation.

Since the Queen is facing Pr. Royal, she can easily give her eye contact when she needs to be prompted. The Pr. Royal needs to memorize the Obligation and be ready to prompt at the first Ceremony of Initiation rehearsal. T/S

3. Introducing visiting Princesses Royal: T/S

Option One: When there are visiting Princesses Royal, they are to be seated in Temple No. order (from lowest to highest) near Pr. Royal’s station. When the Queen asks her to introduce her guests, she introduces them in Temple No. order (from lowest to highest) giving their names, Temple names, numbers, cities, and states/provinces.

Option Two: A Past Queen/Affiliated Past Queen serving as Pr. Royal at a Session in her own Temple. Pr. Royal stands at her station to be recognized as a Past Queen in the same manner as the Junior Past Queen. A Past Queen serving as Pr. Royal visiting another Temple. She is introduced by her counterpart as Past Queen/Affiliated Past Queen (giving her name in full), serving as Princess Royal, from: name of Temple and number, city and state/province.

Option Three: Per Temple Traditions 4. Note: In the Opening, the Queen addresses the Pr. Royal. Pr. Royal stands,

salutes, and says, “Your Majesty.” THEN the Queen speaks. However, in the Closing, it is different. The Queen says, “Pr. Royal” and continues to speak and THEN Pr. Royal stands, salutes, says, “Your Majesty” and answers the Queen all at once. R: 18,31, 35, 95,97

5. When the “Golden Links of Fellowship” are formed, Pr. Royal steps into the “Links” between Pr. Tirzah and Pr. Marshal. FC: 59; R: 63

6. Prior to the Opening of the Temple, Pr. Recorder provides the proper number of membership pins to Pr. Royal. Based on the traditions of the Temple, Pr. Royal may place the pins on a small pillow to make an attractive appearance or on ribbons to make it easier to pin on the New Member(s). R: 14, 47 M-88

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE PR. TIRZAH Reference: 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples (FC pages 15-19, 20-21, 25-27, 45-50, 53-55, 59-60, 63, 73-75, 77-79, 83) 2013 Ritual Daughters of the Nile (R pages 18, 20-22, 23, 29, 33-35, 43, 53-55, 58-59, 63, 66, 79-81, 83, 93, 96, 98) 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws (B pages: B64, 69) 2013 Protocol (P) 2015 Manual of Procedures (M page M-69) Traditions passed down from the Founders of the Order and Supplemental Instructions (T/S) The station of Pr. Tirzah is a beautiful one. She gives the compassionate lecture to the Ladies of the Household in the Closing Ceremonies. The reverent Altar work is conducted with the grace of the Noble Pr. Tirzah.

1. Use only instrumental music during the Bible ceremony. R: 22, 35, 97 2. Note that the Ritual states that Pr. Badoura and Pr. Tirzah BOW to each other

before leaving their stations to “Take the Password.” Thus, they should bow, not nod their heads. Remember that bowing is what Pr. Tirzah does at the Altar before a closed Bible in the Opening and in the Closing. FC: 15; R: 20, 33

3. Pr. Tirzah is responsible for the Bible, veil, and white rose at her station. Note that the Bible is bookmarked and opened to Matthew Chapter 5. FC: 20, R: 22

4. Pr. Tirzah should be sure to use a real white rose when there is a Ceremonial. R: 13

5. When Pr. Tirzah enters the Crescent in the Opening to attend the Altar, she does not hesitate between Pr. Zulieka’s and Pr. Zenobia’s stations. She needs to keep moving. T/S

6. When attending the Altar, Pr. Tirzah needs to watch her sleeves to avoid catching the rose and accidentally pulling it from the Bible. T/S

7. On the real rose(s) used for the Ceremonial, the thorns should be removed and at least three leaves left on the stem. The stem should not extend past the Bible. FC: 20, 41

8. Since the Altar work is not entirely spelled out in the Ritual, the following should assist Pr. Tirzah with the veil. After placing the Bible on the Altar, Pr. Tirzah picks up the veil and rose and sets them to the right side of the Bible. She opens the Bible and then picks up the rose with the left hand under the bud and the right hand holding the stem. She places the rose across the Bible diagonally with the bud facing the Pr. Chaplain’s station. She then picks up two corners of the veil which have been slightly folded (folding veil corners is optional) for easy pickup, opens the veil, holds it up, and then drapes it across the Bible beginning at the bottom edge of the Altar and toward the Throne. All these movements should be done in a slow and reverent manner. If the size of the veil and the size of the Altar do not prohibit it, try to not allow the veil to hang over the side of the Altar. FC: 20, 21; R: 35; T/S

9. Never move or touch the Bible or veil after they have been placed. Be sure to take the time to do it right. It will always be impressive when it is done in this manner. FC:21, T/S

HELPFUL TIPS FOR PR. TIRZAH (continued)

10. Introducing visiting Princesses Tirzah: T/S

Option One: When there are visiting Princesses Tirzah, they are to be seated in Temple No. order (from lowest to highest) near Pr. Tirzah’s station. When the Queen asks her to introduce her guests, she introduces them in Temple No. order (from lowest to highest) giving their names, Temple names, numbers, cities, and states/provinces.

Option Two: A Past Queen/Affiliated Past Queen serving as Pr. Tirzah at a Session in her own Temple. Pr. Tirzah stands at her station to be recognized as a Past Queen in the same manner as the Junior Past Queen. A Past Queen serving as Pr. Tirzah visiting another Temple. She is introduced by her counterpart as Past Queen/Affiliated Past Queen (giving her name in full), serving as Princess Tirzah, from: name of Temple and number, city and state/province.

Option Three: Per Temple Traditions 11. The folding of the veil is not spelled out in the Ritual. The following has been

handed down from our Founders. It will be easy to do if you remember to fold toward your heart. Pick up each corner on the Throne side of the Altar. Bring the corners toward you and together. Take the folded side with the left hand and open side in the right hand. Take the top corners and bring them toward you once again ending with double fold side on the left and the open side on the right. Hold the top of the veil with the right and, slip the left hand against the center of the veil and fold toward you and over your left hand. Take hold of the bottom ends with the right hand; lay the veil on the Altar on the right side of the Bible. Slip the left hand out from between the fold. The folded veil is placed at the bottom and at the right hand corner of the Altar with the corners of the open edge of the veil facing the bottom. Since she is in charge of the Membership sign-in process, she needs to be punctual in arriving at the Temple to see that each Member shows a current and signed dues card to enter the Temple room. She needs to be early so she and the Lady of the Keys can work together to guard the doors. If she is not able to arrive early, she must get someone to take her place until she arrives.

1. She should be aware of her duties and know when the Ladies of the Household are permitted to enter and retire while the Temple is in session. M: 96-97; R: 19, 26, 32,

45, 96, 99

No one is to enter or leave during the Secret Work

As designated after the Opening

No one is to enter during Balloting

No one should enter or leave during the Obligation 2. Doors should never be left unguarded. T/S 3. The Lady of the Gates closes the doors as soon as the Officers have entered the

Temple. R: 29 4. The Pr. Recorder provides the Lady of the Gates with an alphabetical list of

Candidates. The Lady of the Gates checks the names of the Candidates who are present and gives the list (scroll) to the Lady of the Keys. FC: 42; R: 48

5. The Lady of the Gates is the double check for the Pr. Marshal in ensuring that the Exemplifying Candidate has the Amphora before entering the Temple for the Ceremonial. T/S

6. If the anteroom is a public place and a Ceremony of Initiation is taking place, the Lady of the Gates closes the door once the Candidates are inside the room to hear the song, “Knocking, Knocking.” R: 49

7. During the Supreme Queen’s Official Visit, the Queen may appoint another Member to assist the Lady of the Gates at the sign-in table. T/S

8. To expedite the sign-in process for large numbers of Members, it is helpful to have separate sign-in sheets for the different categories of dignitaries for the Queen’s guest book. Have blank introduction cards available at the sign-in table for the dignitaries to complete. This will assist the Supreme Queen and Queen during Formal Introductions. T/S

9. Lady of the Gates may listen to the business portion once the Ritualistic Opening has been completed. She may sit inside the Temple next to the outer door, but must ensure the door is always secure. M: 96-97; T/S

Make sure she has KNITTED, not crocheted, lace. She should not go directly towards the face when seeing the Candidate by tactile feel. She should feel around for the hand and work up to the face. A blind person does not reach directly for the face. (Consideration should be given as to not infringe upon the Exemplifying Member’s personal space.) She should also fumble around for the lace in the basket. REMEMBER, SHE CANNOT SEE. While portraying her work, she should either pick a spot on the opposite wall on which to stare or just look over the Exemplifying Member’s head. She is not to focus on Pr. Badoura or the Exemplifying Member.

1. When the Ladies in Waiting enter in the Opening Ceremonies and have formed a crescent line at the foot of the Throne, Pr. Nydia is in the position to see when Pr. Zuliema is in place in the crescent line; therefore she knows when the Ladies in Waiting are in place to give the Salutation Sign. All other Ladies in Waiting should look at Pr. Nydia for the cue as to when to salute so it can be done in unison. T/S

2. During the Opening, the Ladies in the Crescent should work in unison with Pr. Badoura in picking up and putting down the baskets. R: 40; T/S

3. All movements should be done with dignity, grace, and in unison. When Pr. Badoura is out of the line of vision of any of the Ladies in Waiting, the Ladies in Waiting should look at Pr. Nydia for a cue as to when to pick up and put down the baskets. If all are watching and following Pr. Nydia, then it will be done in unison. T/S

4. In the Opening when Pr. Badoura addresses each Lady in Waiting, each stands, picks up her basket, cradles it in the left arm, and THEN responds. T/S

5. Pr. Nydia extends her hand forward with the lace offering it to Pr. Badoura. She does not place it in Pr. Badoura’s hand, as she cannot see her hand. T/S

6. During the Ceremony of Initiation, Pr. Nydia begins knitting immediately after Pr. Badoura enters with the Candidate(s). She stops knitting after she gives the emblem to the Exemplifying Member to take to the Queen. FC: 45,67; R: 53

7. When Pr. Badoura greets Pr. Nydia during the Ceremony of Initiation, Pr. Nydia extends her hand forward and Pr. Badoura grasps it since she can see where the hand is to clasp. R: 66-67

Pr. Zulieka should project a positive attitude in her work. She is confident, serene, and smiles with an attitude of hope and belief.

1. Pr. Zulieka ensures that fresh flowers of various colors and fragrances are furnished for Ceremonials. At least one red rose, which can be removed easily, must be in the flower arrangement/selection. Don’t have it so tall that it appears to be sticking out from the arrangement. Instead of a floral arrangement, the flowers can be placed in a flower basket. Make an attempt to have as wide a variety of colors of flowers as possible. R: 13; T/S

Pr. Zora is emotionless and should project her voice without inflection or feeling. This is very hard to do as we usually tend to smile. Portraying Pr. Zora is one of the most challenging characters.

1. In order to project a stoic presence, Pr. Zora should not react physically in any way. As she is brief in speech, she should be brief in movements. She should never move unless it is absolutely necessary and should not fidget or jitter. It would be advisable for her to study fashion models as they rarely show emotion or smile when they are on the runway. This is the look Pr. Zora should strive to have. T/S

Pr. Zuliema should have a good speaking voice and be able to memorize her work well. She is deaf. Therefore, she should not have to be prompted.

1. An outstanding portrayal of Pr. Zuliema includes the hand movements. Pr. Zuliema should place her hand on Pr. Badoura’s chin and lightly turn Pr. Badoura’s head toward her to emphasize the need for Pr. Badoura to face her. She must remember to shake hands with Pr. Badoura and the Exemplifying Member. Pretending to place the hand on the harp is another gesture that adds to the portrayal. R: 77

2. Instead of using a pen to write music on the scroll, a plume fits with the era portrayed. Attaching a feather to a pen or pencil can make the writing instrument look like a plume. T/S

MUSICIAN Reference: 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples (FC) 2013 Ritual Daughters of the Nile (R pages 35, 49, 83) 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws (B) 2013 Protocol (P) 2015 Manual of Procedures (M page M-54) Traditions passed down from the Founders of the Order and Supplemental Instructions (T/S) Memoirs of Mabel R. Krows The Pr. Musician’s gift to the Temple is most important. Music, well played and appropriate, is truly a beautiful gift and helps to pull the entire day together. Encourage the Pr. Musician to use Egyptian/Middle Eastern music and to use common sense in selecting an appropriate key for the National Anthem. (Perhaps the key of G or A flat) Appropriate patriotic music should be played for the presentation of the American Flag. “Maple Leaf Forever” is nice for the Canadian Flag, and Egyptian/Middle Eastern music is appropriate for the Temple Banner, if available. Many musicians have a wide assortment of hymns which are appropriate in many aspects.

1. During the Ceremony of Initiation when in a public place, the Pr. Musician must wait until all the Candidates are in place inside the room before beginning to play “Knocking, Knocking.” R: 49

2. The Pr. Musician must wait until all the new Members are seated and Pr. Badoura and Pr. Marshal have returned to their seats before playing “Weary Pilgrim.” R: 83

3. The Pr. Musician should consult with the Queen regarding the Queen’s selections for the Opening and Closing Odes. She shall serve as an excellent resource to the Queen to assist her in choosing an Opening Ode that is cheerful and uplifting; thus, setting the tone for the Session. T/S

4. She should keep in mind that not all members are of the Christian faith. T/S 5. When the Exemplifying Member is visiting Pr. Zuliema during the Ceremony of

Initiation, the Pr. Musician could play the first four bars of “Traumerei” by Robert Schuman. Arpeggios or a bar or two of appropriate music will do just fine. T/S

6. The Pr. Musician chooses appropriate marching music when Pr. Marshal is presenting visitors, etc. T/S

7. Only instrumental music is played while Pr. Tirzah is attending the Altar. R: 35 8. If there are several New Members, the Pr. Musician should prepare music to be

played while they are signing the Membership Book. T/S

They do not have speaking parts, but their floor work is crucial to having things go smoothly and well. They should be responsible, energetic, dedicated, happy, and willing to participate. They should smile and add flair and liveliness to the beautiful work of our Order. They should know the importance of when to salute and when to attend. They should be willing to practice often.

1. Attendants walk with their arms parallel, hands resting on their elbows, and their elbows raised at right angles to the body. The left arm is positioned on top of the right arm in order to easily transition to the Salutation Sign. FC: 3; T/S

2. When the Attendants are standing or not moving, the arms remain parallel, but the elbows are lowered to rest the arms against the body. When they are sitting in their chairs, they may sit with their hands in their lap. FC: 3

3. The Attendants do not need to take two steps apart during the Ceremony of Initiation. Attendants may step together once. The distance between them and the area involved will determine whether one or two steps will be needed. Read the fine print. FC: 67; R: 66

4. The Attendants do not step together in the Opening. They make a low bow at their stations and then face the Queen until the Ladies in Waiting give the salute. After their Salute, the Attendants turn and face the Assembly. FC: 11; R: 30

5. During the Ceremony of Initiation, the Attendants work together in handling the Amphora. They should read page 51 of the 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples very closely in order to perform this task with ease and grace. FC: 51

6. Obligation – Attendants immediately leave the Altar after the prayer to go to the Throne to escort the Queen to the Altar. Attendants salute the Queen, sidestep, turn to face each other, and make a low bow. The Queen passes between them. The Queen PRECEDES the Attendants to the Altar and then they assume their original positions. FC: 57; R: 60-61

7. Following the christening, the Attendants PRECEDE the Queen to the Throne. The Attendants stop at the “Golden Links of Fellowship” to allow the Queen to reach over the Attendants’ elbows to break the “Links” with her hand. Once the “Links” are broken, the Attendants and Queen continue toward the Throne. The Queen hesitates to give the Attendants time to precede her. When the Attendants reach their stations, they face each other and make a low bow for the Queen to pass between them and ascend the Throne. The Attendants immediately march toward Pr. Tirzah’s station to conduct the Pr. Badoura and Exemplifying Member. FC: 63,65; R: 65-66

HELPFUL TIPS FOR HANDMAIDENS/ NILE MAIDENS/ PAGES/ JEWEL GIRLS These helpers should be friendly, willing to be of help, and observant of the needs of the Ladies of the Household while in Session. They add to the pageantry of the Stated Sessions. They are seated in the four corners of the Temple room. These appointed positions give four additional Members a worthwhile job to do at sessions.

1. These ladies’ duties are to assist the Ladies of the Household during the Taking of the Password by helping them up and down steps (if there are some in the room) and directing them to the established path to Pr. Badoura and Pr. Tirzah.

2. If a lady forgets the Password, the closest Maiden escorts the lady to the Throne to receive the Password from the Queen. Then she escorts the lady back to the Officer taking the Password. (In Temples without the above, Members of any Temple Unit or group of volunteers may be asked by the Queen to perform this duty.)

3. The Maidens are observant during Session to the needs of all the Ladies of the Household. There is water available at the Pr. Recorder’s station to take to a lady who is coughing, etc. This is done as discreetly as possible and not during the Ritualistic Opening and Closing, if possible.

4. The Maidens could be given the responsibility of standing at the exit door(s) and collecting the Odes so they can be redistributed at the next Stated Session.

5. The Queen may ask the Maidens to assist the Pr. Marshal by providing chairs and pillows for the Candidates during the Ceremony of Initiation.

6. If the Temple has a monetary collection during the Good of the Order, the Maidens may be the ones designated to take the baskets around the room to collect the donations.

7. The Maidens should be ready to assist the Queen whenever called upon. 8. In some Temples, the Maidens are asked to assist a specific Elective Officer and

are seated at or near her station. The Maidens may assist in making sure her station is properly set up and all the items needed are present as well as doing such other duties that would support that Officer.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE PAST QUEENS Reference: 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples (FC pages 62) 2013 Ritual Daughters of the Nile (R pages 64-65) 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws (B) 2013 Protocol (P) 2015 Manual of Procedures (M) Christening of New Members:

1. Past Queens whom the Queen has selected to assist with the Christening should know the proper procedure. When they are christening, they DO NOT repeat the words of the Queen, but remain silent and move the rose in the proper manner.

2. Christening Procedure: The rose does not cross the face. The Past Queen standing beside the New Member, takes the rose, held with the bud up and stem down as it grows, and lightly touches the member’s closest eye with the rose. Then, she lowers the rose under the member’s chin to touch her other eye and the ear on the same side. The Past Queen then brings the rose back under the New Member’s chin and touches the closest ear before placing the rose on the New Member’s head, with the bud facing the Throne The stem of the rose is then placed in the right hand of the New Member with the bud facing up.

3. When the New Members are instructed by the Queen to go and receive the lessons, the Past Queens who are inside the Crescent assist the New Members to stand. They then help Pr. Tirzah by picking up the pillows and removing the chairs, if used.

Formal Introductions:

1. When large groups of Past Queens are introduced such as at the Supreme Queen’s Official Visit, the Queen instructs the Past Queens to introduce themselves. Each shall give her name, her Temple name and number, and the year(s) she served as Queen.

2. When giving the year serving as Queen, give the year you were installed, for example 2000, not 2000-2001. Our Order has Past Queens who have served more than once, and in more than one Temple. They will say, for example, 1999 in Temple X No. 00 and 2005 and 2007 in Y Temple No. 00.

GUIDELINES FOR PAST QUEEN(S) ATTENDING AND INSTRUCTING CANDIDATES Reference: 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples (FC pages 41) 2013 Ritual Daughters of the Nile (R pages 47) 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws, Manual of Procedures, Protocol (B, M, P) Pages: M52-53, 118-121 The Past Queen(s) appointed by the Queen to instruct the Candidates should be well versed in our Order. She should be friendly and helpful and make the Candidates feel welcome as she instructs them. In addition to the guidelines in the Manual of Procedures, review the following with the Candidates:

1. The Past Queen should give details about the meeting of any Sewing Group that meets to sew for the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children®.

2. The Past Queen should inform the Candidates that our Members do not cross the legs during a meeting (Stated Session). Crossing the ankles is acceptable.

3. There is a dress code at all Daughters of the Nile functions. At ceremonials, all members must wear a dress/skirt. Officers wear a long dress or skirt. At Stated Sessions, but not at a Ceremonial of Initiation, members on the sidelines may wear formal pants or a dressy pants suit. This decision is according to the vote of the Temple.

4. Once a year the Supreme Queen (our North American, International, President) always makes an official visit to each Temple in the U.S. and Canada. While she is visiting a Temple, the Temple Officers must perform a Ceremony of Initiation and a banquet is hosted in her honor. (If time and the attention of the Candidates permit, the Past Queen can also discuss the Supreme Session.)

5. The Past Queen should inform them of the information that is included in the Temple roster, should one be published.

The Past Queen(s) also ensures that the Candidates’ purses are secure and brings them into the session room and places them beside their chairs or at the Pr. Recorder’s station.

TAKING AND RECEIVING THE PASSWORD Since the procedure for taking the password is OPTIONAL and can vary with each

Temple, the following is a sample of how it can be done.

DURING THE OPENING: Reference: 2013 Ritual of the Daughters of the Nile - pages 16, 20-21, 33-34 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples - pages 15-19 The Pr. Tirzah and Pr. Badoura rise, bow to each other, and approach the Throne diagonally. They salute the Queen. Pr. Tirzah obtains the password from the Queen and Junior Past Queen, leaves the Throne, and goes directly to the Supreme Queen (SQ), if present, and any Past Supreme Queens PSQs) and takes the word. Once she has taken the word from the SQ and/or PSQs, she returns to the foot of the Throne and waits for Pr. Badoura. While Pr. Tirzah is taking the word from the SQ and/or PSQs, Pr. Badoura ascends the Throne, takes the word from the Queen, and receives the password from anyone else who may be seated on the Throne, descends the Throne, and stands in front of the Attendant and waits for Pr. Tirzah to return. If the SQ and/or PSQ(s) are not present, Princesses Tirzah and Badoura begin with the two Attendants and work in unison to receive the password from the Officers seated in the east. Then they progress in the following manner: Pr. Badoura Pr. Chaplain Pr. Tirzah Pr. Marshal Pr. Banker Pr. Recorder Pr. Musician (if seated in the northeast) Assistant Recorder (if used) Pr. Tirzah turns and walks to a position on the floor in front of Pr. Nydia’s station and faces the Throne. Pr. Badoura turns and walks to a position on the floor in front of Pr. Zuliema’s station and faces Throne. They leave enough room for the Ladies of the Household sitting in this area of the room to walk around them and exit to their seats after whispering the word in their ear nearest the Altar. The Members sitting in the north go to Pr. Badoura. The Members sitting in the south go to Pr. Tirzah. Note: If a Member does not know the password, a designated Member of a unit, handmaiden or aide, or appointed volunteer; should ESCORT the Member who does not know the word to the Throne to get it from the Queen and then ESCORT her back to give the word. If a Member cannot stand or walk to give the word, the Officer should go to that Member for the password. If there are seats on either side of Pr. Royal’s station, those on Pr. Badoura’s side go to her, and those on Pr. Tirzah’s side go to her. Since the layouts of the Temple session rooms vary, depending on which side of the room the Lady of the Keys and Pr. Musician are located, the Pr. Tirzah or the Pr. Badoura will receive the word. Then, Pr. Tirzah takes a position on the floor in the west and faces the Throne. They leave enough room for the Ladies of the Household sitting in this area of the room to walk around them and exit to their seats after whispering the word in their ear. The Members sitting in the north go to Pr. Badoura. The Members sitting in the south go to Pr. Tirzah.

TAKING THE PASSWORD (continued) Princesses Tirzah and Badoura receive the word from the Ladies in Waiting in the following manner. They work in unison. Pr. Badoura Pr. Zuliema Pr. Tirzah Pr. Nydia Pr. Zora Pr. Zulieka Pr. Zenobia Note: Pr. Zuliema and Pr. Nydia arise together, give the word, and remain standing. Pr. Zora and Pr. Zulieka arise together, give the word, and remain standing. Pr. Zenobia arises, gives the word and ALL are seated simultaneously. Pr. Badoura and Pr. Tirzah stand next to each Lady in Waiting on her right side, except on Pr. Zuliema’s left (the opposite side of the displayed emblem), and are careful not to enter the Crescent. Pr. Tirzah goes to Pr. Royal and receives the word. Pr. Badoura and Pr. Tirzah face each other. Pr. Badoura speaks to Pr. Tirzah. They turn to face west and Pr. Tirzah speaks to Pr. Royal. When Pr. Royal addresses the Queen, the Princesses Tirzah and Badoura turn and face the Throne. Once Pr. Royal has completed her statement to the Queen, Princesses Tirzah and Badoura salute in unison, return to their seats in the Temple and remain standing.

TAKING AND RECEIVING THE PASSWORD WITH MULTIPLE PRINCESSES TIRZAH AND BADOURA

To expedite the taking of the word when there are large numbers in attendance such as the Supreme Queen’s Official Visit and State/Regional Conventions PRIOR TO THE OPENING: Have the host Princesses Tirzah and Badoura mentally divide the area for the Ladies of the Household sitting on the sidelines into rows, quadrants, or however it can best be divided. Depending on how many visiting Princesses Tirzah and Badoura are willing to help, assign an area (north, south or west) to a specific visiting Pr. Tirzah (henceforth referred to as VPT) or Pr. Badoura (henceforth referred to as VPB). Walk them to that area to show them where they will be taking the word. Past Queens can also be used in lieu of VPBs and VPTs. Five minutes of instruction/walk through with the VPTs and VPBs would be very helpful. The VPTs and VPBs should be sitting (in Temple No. order from lowest to highest) as close to the host Temple’s Pr. Tirzah and Pr. Badoura respectively, as the room allows. To expedite the receiving of the word, the Queen may instruct the Ladies of the Household that are sitting in rows on the sidelines to stand as their row is approached for the password. As each lady gives the word, she sits; thus making it easier and quicker for the Officer to pass. DURING THE OPENING: Reference: 2013 Ritual of the Daughters of the Nile - pages 16, 20-21, 33-34 2014 Floor Charts for Subordinate Temples - page 15-19 The VPTs and VPBs follow the lead of the host Pr. Tirzah and Pr. Badoura. They rise and approach the Throne diagonally. They line up in a straight line with the VPTs standing to the right of Pr. Tirzah and the VPBs standing to the left of Pr. Badoura. On Pr. Tirzah’s cue, they ALL salute simultaneously. Pr. Tirzah obtains the password from the Queen and Jr. Past Queen, leaves the Throne, and goes directly to the Supreme Queen (SQ), if present, and to any Past Supreme Queens (PSQs) and receives the word. Once she receives the word from the SQ and/or PSQs, she returns to the foot of the Throne and waits for Pr. Badoura. While Pr. Tirzah is receiving the word from the SQ and/or PSQs, Pr. Badoura ascends the Throne, takes the word from the Queen and receives the password from anyone else who may be seated on the Throne, descends the Throne, stands in front of the Attendant, and waits for Pr. Tirzah to return. Once Pr. Badoura has descended the Throne, the VPTs and VPBs form two single file lines. One VPT and one VPB ascend the Throne together to get the word from the Queen. Note: If both cannot ascend the Throne together due to narrow steps or other obstacles, they alternate ascending the Throne: VPT, VPB, VPT, VPB, etc. If the Throne set up allows, the VPTs and VPBs descend the Throne via the south and north steps respectively to expedite the process. If there are no south and north steps from the Throne, the Queen could descend to the lowest step without the VPTs and VPBs

Supreme Action Team Committee - 2015

TAKING AND RECEIVING THE PASSWORD WITH MULTIPLE TIRZAHS AND BADOURAS (continued) having to ascend the Throne. Once the VPTs and VPBs get the word from the Queen, they quickly and quietly move to their assigned areas. Once they have completed their areas, they go to the west and stand in front of Pr. Royal’s station to wait for the others. Note: If a Member does not know the password, and there is not a handmaiden or aide available, then the VPB or VPT should ESCORT the Member who does not know the word to the Throne to get it from the Queen and then ESCORT her back to her seat to give the word. While the VPTs and VPBs are receiving the word from the Ladies of the Household sitting on the sidelines, the Prs. Tirzah and Badoura are taking the word in the Temple’s usual manner from your Temple’s Elective and Appointive Officers, beginning with the two Attendants and working in unison. Once the Princesses Tirzah and Badoura have completed their task, they go to the west and wait for the VPTs and VPBs. Again the VPTs and VPBs line up (they do NOT have to be in Temple number order at this point) BEHIND the Pr. Tirzah or Pr. Badoura. When Pr. Badoura speaks to Pr. Tirzah, the VPTs and VPBs are standing BEHIND the Pr. Tirzah or Pr. Badoura. When Pr. Tirzah addresses the Pr. Royal, they all turn and face WEST. When Pr. Royal addresses the Queen, they all turn and face the Throne. Once Pr. Royal has completed her statement to the Queen, they all salute in unison on Pr. Tirzah’s cue and then follow the Princesses Tirzah and Badoura to their seats in the Temple.

MEMORIZING YOUR PART

Everyone learns differently. Learning styles are visual, auditory, and tactile. Finding the teaching method that matches one’s learning style is often difficult, especially if you are teaching a group. Therefore, the following strategy can be useful because it uses a combination of all the learning styles. When memorizing, talk to yourself. Speaking the words out loud will help you visually (reading it), with auditory (hearing it), and sensually feeling the rhythm of the words in your throat. Memorizing lines is easy for some, but for others it causes much anxiety. The first task is to ask if the anxiety is coming from the memorization process or if it is from speaking in front of others. Realize that memorizing is one source of concern and speaking to a group is another. Speaking in front of others:

Practice out loud.

Once you stand, take a moment to gather your thoughts and relax.

Focus on someone in the back of the room.

You may also look just over the heads of your audience. It will appear that you are making eye contact with everyone, but you will be looking just above their eyes.

HOW TO MEMORIZE What to do first:

Read the whole Ceremonial

Pay attention to your part Next:

Make sure you understand the lines

The best way to memorize is one line at a time

Cover each line, then repeat it Problem Solving:

Learn to think like your character.

Try to practice your lines in a mirror so you can check your expressions. Move your face or your arms a special way to emphasize specific words or passages.

In order to remember the sequence, repeat a small section with overlap into the next section. The last few words you say become the first few words of the next section. This overlap creates the flow.

Have a Member friend practice with you. As you begin to remember each part, give the Ritual to a Member to follow along as you recite it.

The best way to retain your part is to repeat it out loud every opportunity you have. Talk to yourself in the shower, in the car, walking the dog.

When you deliver your memory work, try to not let it sound memorized or that you are in a race to finish it. Say your words as distinctly as possible. Remember to pause only where there is a punctuation mark to cause a pause, no matter where it appears.

HOW DO I SAY IT?

Suggested Pronunciation: Words in the Ritual Amphora Am’ Frah am’ fah rah Arabic Air’ uh bic Bade Bad Badoura Bah dur’ uh Devotees Dev’ uh tees Ilderim Ill’ Drim Il’ dah rum Irrevocably Ear rev’ uh ka bly Tirzah Tur’ za Sheik Sheek (not Shake) Pronouncing Temple Names: When in doubt of how to pronounce a Temple name, please refer to the History of the Founding of Daughters of the Nile, which has a listing of each Temple and how to pronounce the names. By doing a little research, you will make visiting Members from other Temples feel welcome when you say their Temple names correctly.

BEST PRACTICES FOR PROMPTERS

1. At the first new Officers’ rehearsal, the prompters are introduced and their

assignments are noted. Prompters are seated at each of the Line Officers’

stations. No one is to prompt an Officer except the assigned prompter.

Having prompters positioned throughout the session room enables prompting to

be done discreetly, without yelling across the room. (Some Temples may use a

Ceremonial Assistant as the sole prompter, along with the Junior Past Queen to

assist the Queen and Pr. Badoura during the Ceremony of Initiation.)

a. The prompter seated next to Pr. Badoura in the north prompts: Pr.

Badoura, Pr. Zuliema, Pr. Zora, and Pr. Chaplain when she is at the Altar.

b. The prompter seated next to Pr. Tirzah in the south prompts: Pr. Tirzah,

Pr. Nydia, and Pr. Zulieka

c. The prompter next to Pr. Royal in the west prompts: Pr. Royal, Lady of

the Keys, Pr. Zenobia, and Pr. Badoura when she is behind Pr. Zenobia’s

station.

d. The Junior Past Queen seated in the east on the Throne prompts: the

Queen, Pr. Marshal, Pr. Chaplain, Pr. Recorder, Pr. Banker, and Pr.

Badoura during the Ceremony of Initiation when she is at the foot of the

Throne.

e. Pr. Royal prompts the Queen when she is at the Altar during the

Obligation.

f. During a Ceremonial, an additional prompter may be seated next to the

door to prompt Pr. Marshal and Pr. Badoura.

2. Sometimes prompters are too quick to prompt an Officer. This makes it difficult

for the Officer to get her thoughts back on track. Each prompter should meet

with the Officer she is prompting to establish a cue when there is a need for

prompting. It could be a discreet hand movement at the side, a nod of the head,

or by giving eye contact to the prompter. If an Officer has a hearing problem that

would prevent a prompt being whispered to her, she needs to make her prompter

aware.

3. Prompters should be available to attend rehearsals in order to practice working

with their assigned Officer. They are not to give instructions to the Officers. This

is the role of the Ceremonial Assistant.

PRO TEMS

Reference: 2013 Supreme Temple Daughters of the Nile Bylaws, pages 64-65 Each Officer is instructed that if she cannot attend a Stated Session or a rehearsal, she

shall immediately contact the Queen.

There are several ways to ensure someone assumes the station of an Officer who cannot attend a Session. The following are a few suggestions.

1. The Queen can make a list of Members who have filled each station in the past.

The list can be made from the names that have signed the Officer’s bookplate

inside each Temple Ritual.

2. A pro tem officer can be selected at the beginning of the year to work with an

Officer in the memorizing of the ritualistic work.

3. When a pro tem is needed, some Queens like to call the pro tem of their choice.

Other Temples give the responsibility of calling the pro tem to the Officer who is

going to be absent. No matter which procedure is used, the Queen needs to be

made aware before session of the names of any pro tems.

4. Remember: A Past Queen shall serve as a pro tem for the Junior Past Queen

and any Elective Line Officer.

CEREMONIAL ASSISTANT’S INSTRUCTIONS TO LADIES OF THE HOUSEHOLD

These instructions will assist the Ladies of the Household to feel more comfortable and knowledgeable during a Stated Session and the Supreme Queen’s Official Visit.

I. How do I enter and leave the Temple while it is in Session?

It is not unusual for a new member to sit in Session and wonder what to do if she needs to leave the room. Reference: 2013 Ritual of the Daughters of the Nile, pages 20, 33 1. If you are returning to the session room, you must take your dues card with

you to show to the Lady of the Keys and then you give her the password. 2. If you are not returning to the session room, take your purse and place it on

the floor next to Pr. Royal’s station, salute, pick up your purse, and exit. 3. The same procedure is used when you enter a Session with your purse.

Place it on the floor next to Pr. Royal’s station, salute, pick up your purse, and be seated.

4. The Member does not turn and bow to Pr. Royal after the Queen acknowledges the salute. The Member only bows to Pr. Royal when the Queen is occupied and doesn’t see her salute.

5. At a Stated Session, you may ask someone to demonstrate the proper way to enter and leave. Reviewing this procedure right before the Official Visit of the Supreme Queen will provide a refresher for everyone.

II. What do I do if I forget the password? The Queen is the only person who can tell you the password. You may go to her before the Session begins and ask her for the word. She will be happy to give it to a Member. If you don’t know the word during the Taking of the Password, an assistant will escort you to the Throne to get the word from the Queen. Remember: The annual password changes at each Supreme Session in June. III. How do I make the Salutation Sign? Reference: 2013 Ritual of the Daughters of the Nile, pages 35, 40, 90, 92

1.You may wish to ask the Junior Past Queen to demonstrate the Salutation Sign as you explain the process. When instructing to cross your arms over the breast emphasize that you place the thumbs at the base of the neck, under the chin. You can feel the collarbone where you can rest your thumbs. Keep your fingers close together. The arms are in a relaxed position, and are not held in front of the body.

CEREMONIAL ASSISTANT’S INSTRUCTIONS TO LADIES OF THE HOUSEHOLD (continued)

How do I make the Salutation Sign? (continued)

2.Nothing is to be held in the hands when giving the Salutation Sign. If you are making a presentation to the Queen or Supreme Queen, give the item in your hand to an Attendant. She will hold it for you until you salute. The only exception is when the Pr. Marshal is carrying the baton.

3.You release the Salutation Sign by gracefully extending the arms to the side. 4.When the Pr. Chaplain kneels, all Members assume the Salutation Sign. (If Pr.

Chaplain does not kneel because of her inability to do so, assume the Salutation Sign when she places her hands together reverently.) The Salutation Sign is released following the word “Selah.”

5.When Pr. Tirzah attends the Altar, all Members assume the Salutation Sign as she enters the Crescent. The Salutation Sign is held until she exits the Crescent.

6.In the Opening, the Salutation Sign is held until the Queen ascends the throne. IV. During the Ceremony of Initiation, do I leave my seat to form the “Golden

Links of Fellowship?” Reference: 2013 Ritual of the Daughters of the Nile, page 63

1. The rule of thumb is to make sure you have enough ladies in the circle to join hands, but not too many that would block the view of those on the Throne and the sidelines.

2. It is recommended that a practice for this part be held before a Ceremony of Initiation at a Stated Session under the Good of the Order. There should be an arm’s length between each one in the circle.

3. If you form the “Golden Links of Fellowship”, you do not break the “Link” once you join hands until the Queen breaks the “Link”. Once she breaks the “Link”, you drop hands and return to your seats.

V. How do I make a Presentation to the Supreme Queen during her Official Visit?

Reference: Protocol, page P-13, Official Visit of the Supreme Queen The Queen calls for Presentations

1. Presentations are given with all presenters forming a line in front of the Throne and giving the Salutation sign, in unison. (Do not give Supreme Honors, as Supreme Honors are given only when instructed to do so by the presiding Officer.)

2. One at a time, each presenter steps forward, makes her presentation, and immediately returns to her seat.

MEANING AND HISTORY OF THE CHARACTERS IN OUR RITUAL

QUEEN NEFERTITI Queen Nefertiti was the royal consort of Amenhotep IV, or King Akhenaten. An enigmatic and reserved personality, cryptic look, fine curvature of the lips, narrow face and noble features are characteristic of late Amarna style which was cultivated in the reign of Tutankhamun. Queen Nefertiti is still remembered in history as Egypt’s sweetest and most beloved Queen. So should every Queen, as leader of her temple, strive for proficiency in leading her ladies, which brings peace of mind to all. Remembering the words of Henry Drummond, “I pass through this way but once and any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” St. Paul wrote, “Your works shall follow you.” PRINCESS ROYAL Princess Royal of Egypt was a Princess born of royalty and was known for her graciousness and giving of alms. In our ritual, Princess Royal has the honor of presenting the beautiful jewel of our Order to each new member. Princess Royal should work closely with the Queen and learn the Queen’s work, particularly the secret work, before her year as Princess Royal, as she never knows when she might be called upon to ascend the throne and assume command of the Temple in the Queen’s absence. PRINCESS TIRZAH Princess Tirzah was the sister of Ben Hur. The Romans threw her into prison because of her belief in Jesus Christ. Since the prison was a dungeon filled with dampness and without light, she contracted leprosy. She was a woman of strong faith, beautiful to behold, and sweet in character and personality. Later, Jesus healed her personally. Knowing this, the lecture of Princess Tirzah becomes more beautiful. PRINCESS BADOURA Princess Badoura, Princess of China, was of royal ancestry. “Amores of Prince Camaralzaman” of Persia was her husband. She loved her home and was known for her gracious hospitality and entertaining of many guests in her palace. Princess Badoura meets our candidates at the outer door and brings them into our household. It is very essential for Princess Badoura to realize that first impressions are lasting, and that much of the growth of our Order depends upon the candidates’ first impression and reception into our household.

MEANING AND HISTORY OF THE CHARACTERS IN OUR RITUAL (continued) PRINCESS RECORDER Much of the good of the Order, as well as the acquaintance of its members and standing of the Subordinate Temples with the Supreme Temple, depend upon the faithful performance of Princess Recorder. PRINCESS BANKER The qualities of integrity, fidelity, loyalty, and faithfulness of the Princess Banker will earn the esteem and respect of the Ladies of the Household. PRINCESS MARSHAL Princess Marshal is the Queen’s executive officer as set forth in the Ritual. Her duties are indispensable. They are to receive and present all visitors and to prepare and present the candidates. She supervises all paraphernalia and floor work. PRINCESS CHAPLAIN Princess Chaplain conducts the divine service of the Temple. Starting in September read the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5. Start with verses 1-12 inclusive and continue with 12 verses at each session finishing in May with the last 12 verses of Matthew 7. Note: These suggestions were written many years ago for the Pr. Chaplain. Today we have many members who are not of the Christian faith; therefore, the Chaplain should be mindful of the ladies she serves when choosing scripture and giving prayers. LADIES IN WAITING The Ladies in Waiting to the Queen represent Faith, Hope, Charity, Trust, and Harmony. Each has her gift for the Queen, which the new member takes to the Queen. These symbolize the main elements of life. They also represent the five senses: seeing, smelling, tasting, feeling, and hearing. Each also has a sister who helps her because of her special handicap. PRINCESS NYDIA In ancient history, Princess Nydia was blind from birth and was stolen from her parents in infancy. While still an infant she was sold to a hard taskmaster and was in captivity for over 20 years. Glaucus rescued her from slavery in 79 A.D. The lace handkerchief that she has made and sends to the Queen as a gift represents refinement and skill.

MEANING AND HISTORY OF THE CHARACTERS IN OUR RITUAL (continued) PRINCESS ZULIEKA In ancient history, Princess Zulieka was the wife of Potiphar who was captain of Pharaoh’s guards. Princess Zulieka was a great lover of nature and art. In our Ritual Zulieka’s station represents hope and she is florist to the Queen. The gift to the Queen is the red rose and flowers which denotes fervency and strength of purpose. PRINCESS ZENOBIA Princess Zenobia was a Queen of Palmyra. She was called the Queen of the East, a woman of beauty who had great courage and high spirits of purity and morals. It is said that she spoke many languages and claimed to be an ancestor of Cleopatra. She and her children were captured by the Romans and carried to Rome as prisoners because of her love for Christ. Princess Zenobia’s station represents charity, which is love. Her gift to the Queen is fruit which denotes fullness of life. PRINCESS ZORA Princess Zora was a Princess of Persia and was very highly regarded for her capability to make friends who trusted her. A city near Palestine (14 miles west of Jerusalem, and the birthplace of Samson, who reminds us of strength), was named for her. Her gift to the Queen is bread, denoting the necessity and strength of life. PRINCESS ZULIEMA Princess Zuliema was a great favorite among royalty in Persia. She is mentioned frequently in Persian poetry. Her station represents harmony. Her gift to the Queen is music that denotes the higher accomplishments of life and the gift of peace of mind.

NOTES FOR THE FIRST MEETING WITH THE NEW OFFICERS

1. Explain that the role of the Ceremonial Assistant is to assist the Officers in

performing the Ritual to the best of their ability and to carry out how the Queen

wishes the Ritualistic work to be done.

2. Let the Officers know that our Ritual is a play and they have been chosen/elected

to play a part in this play. They are to learn their parts like they are the persons

they are portraying. The Ceremonial Assistant is available to give Officers who

have difficulty in memorizing some strategies to assist them in memorizing their

parts. The handouts that have been prepared will give them some history and

understanding of their characters.

3. The Ceremonial Assistant is the only one to address all questions pertaining to

the Ritualistic Ceremonies. Having more than one person in charge is confusing

to the Officers.

4. Explain the role of the prompters (See Prompters) and ask each Officer to meet

with her assigned prompter to establish a cue that will alert her prompter of the

need for prompting. The cue could be a discreet hand movement at her side, a

nod of the head, or giving eye contact.

5. If microphones are available, instruct the Officers to always use the microphones.

If microphones are not available, instruct the Officers to speak loudly, slowly, and

distinctly. It is very disenchanting for a Member to come to Session to witness

our beautiful ritual and not be able to hear it.

6. When each Officer arrives at a Stated Session, ensure that the props for her

station have been put in the proper place.

7. All Officers and those assisting in the Opening must be outside the door of the

session room and ready to walk in at least five minutes before the Session is

scheduled to start.

8. After the Session is closed, each Officer should help the Pr. Marshal by taking her

props to the Pr. Marshal to be packed away.

9. Announce that Page 18 of the 2013 Supreme Temple Bylaws, Article I,

Sovereignty and Organizational Structure, Section 1, Ritualistic Properties and

Philanthropy (a) Ritual and Secret Work reminds us that no one is permitted to

write in a Temple Ritual or copy/print any of the Ritual.

10. Announce that page P-1 of the 2013 Supreme Temple Protocol, I. Dress, A.

Attire, specifies that ankle length or longer dress/skirt is required of all Elective

and Appointive Officers. Refer to that page for additional information regarding

Members’ attire.

11. Have a calendar of scheduled rehearsals available to give to the Officers.

12. Educate the Officers on the execution of the floor work. When the Daughters of

the Nile walk around the session room, we do not square our corners. The

floor work is to flow like the River Nile. As you walk around the session room,

pretend you are floating down the Nile.

FIRST MEETING WITH THE NEW OFFICERS (continued)

13. Emphasize that you do not perform any ACTION while you are SPEAKING,

except the special signs given and explained by the Junior Past Queen. The

Action or movement is done, AND THEN the words are spoken. This includes

picking up baskets, putting down baskets, handing emblems, and making the

Salutation Sign. Always stand, THEN salute, and THEN say, “Your Majesty.”

14. The Officers selected to serve the Temple for the year should be told that they

have a responsibility to the New Members. The New Members will be watching

the Officers and learning from them. Therefore, the Officers should remember

that first impressions are lasting.

Note: A folder may be given to each Officer that would include the following information:

1. Helpful Tips that pertain to her office1 2. Memorizing Your Part2 3. Characters in the Ritual3 4. Calendar of scheduled rehearsals

CEREMONIAL REHEARSAL MEETING WITH OFFICERS

Review the following with Officers:

1. The Daughters of the Nile Ceremony of Initiation is a most beautiful and

meaningful ceremony when done with feeling.

2. The Ritual tells us to change to plural language at specific times during the

Ceremony. See pages 48 and 79.

3. During the Obligation, all Members stand and hold the first part of the Salutation

Sign, with the exception of the Queen.

4. After the Exemplifying Candidate and the Candidates are christened, they are

referred to as Exemplifying Member and Members.

5. The Ceremonial Assistant should remind the Ladies in Waiting that fresh flowers

of different colors and fragrances, an assortment of fruit, and a loaf of bread are

furnished for the Ceremonial.

6. In order to make the Candidates feel welcome and more comfortable, encourage

the Officers to introduce themselves to the Candidates prior to the Ceremonial.

However, Pr. Nydia may not wish to participate in this gesture, as she needs to

convince them that she is blind.

7. The Ceremonial Assistant should review pertinent information that was shared at

the first meeting with the Officers.
