HISTORY OF THE CSSL

The Canterbury Sunday Soccer League was founded in 1974 by David Bolam-Smith when the inaugural Bolam Cup was played between the eight teams in the League. The top four teams at the end of the Sunday League Season went through to the Semi-Finals of the Bolam Cup. The final that year was played at Denton Oval in Hornby between Whitcoulls and Christchurch Star with Whitcoulls claiming victory and the first Bolam Cup title. In recent history, the Bolam Cup as been contested for by the highest ranked teams in each club via knock out cup rounds through-out the season. The CSSL trophy is contested for by all other teams from the clubs also during knock out cup rounds throughout the season. As well as the Cup rounds each division plays two rounds from which a winner is found firstly on points from wins and secondly form the goal point difference if two teams are drawn. The CSSL has been a fantastic competition for over 39 years which is reflected by the number of teams that participate year after year. We hope you enjoy today’s matches.

WHERE: To be advised by email. WHEN: Monday 25th November 2013, 7.00 pm. WHO: A representative from each CSSL club

must attend, otherwise clubs will be fined.

2014 League Set up

Numerous issues were caused in 2013 with teams pulling out late at the start of the season and part way through it. Unfortunately Division 1 ended up with 6 teams in it and this was with the help of Treallus United going up from Division 2 to make it 6 (thank you to them). This is not an acceptable situation that we can let occur again in 2014. At the end of the 2013 season we will initially rank all teams across all the divisions from 1 to 5 and their 2013 finishing positions. We will attempt to run the usual 2 team promotion/relegation – but this may not be suitable in every case e.g. 6 team Divisions. The aim will be to get 8 team divisions starting from Division 1 and down for the 2014 season, where possible.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2013 Welcome to the 2013 Bolam Cup and CSSL Trophy finals. The Bolam Cup and CSSL Trophy knockout competitions have provided some closely fought and entertaining games and I hope that these two finals played at ASB Football Park will continue to uphold this high standard of football. Congratulations to the two Bolam Cup finalists, Cardrona Alvarados and Avonhead A, Cardrona are flying high after securing promotion from Div 4 this year and now in the Bolam cup final after beating teams from higher divisions to get here. Avonhead A despite being in Division 1 for many years have not won the Bolam since 1997 and will be keen to add to their trophy cabinet. It will be a tough game for Cardrona but having played them this year they are a good side and could surprise Avonhead. I would also like to congratulate Lyttelton Borough and the Prebbleton Saints for making the CSSL Trophy final and the Saints for also winning their division. It has been a close year in Division 3 with only 1 point between 1st and 3rd and the Saints losing both games against fourth placed Lyttelton, we should be in for a close match. The CSSL added a few teams this year but also lost a few so there will need to be a clean-up of divisions to bring Division 1 and 2 back to 8 teams each. This will pose an issue with some teams not expecting to be elevated and other expecting to be relegated but who will be retained I hope all clubs will work with us to make this process fair. Next year will be the 40th year of the CSSL and we hope to have a few celebrations for you all to attend. On behalf of all Committee members, I would like to thank all CSSL teams for their participation in 2013 CSSL competitions and look forward to next year. The 2013 CSSL Prize giving Awards dinner is to be held at the Woolston Club on the 21st September, my congratulations to the League division winners and recipients of awards, I will see you all there. Nic Aitken President 2013 CSSL
