GENERAL NOTES

4. DESIGN METHOD: AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design

2. The design of the sheet piling is based on the assumption that the retained height is

no greater than that shown on drawings. If a condition other than that stated above

exists, the Engineer shall be contacted to determine the need for modifications.

registered professional engineer, at no additional cost to the Client. The alternate

must be submitted for review in the form of a shop drawing.

5. Hot-Rolled Sections Were Assumed For Sheet Pile Section Properties;

If Cold-Rolled Steel Is Used Increase Section Properties By 20%.

3. The Contractor may substitute an alternate design, signed and sealed by a Florida

6. Sheet pile shall be chosen to meet the minimum moment of inertia, maximum bending

4. Prior to construction, the Contractor shall submit shop drawings to the Engineer Showing

Details Of The Sheet Pile To Be Used.

5. The contractor shall anticipate that very dense soils and/or other strong materials may be

encountered and that special equipment and/or procedures (i.e, predrilling/preforming, punching,

etc.) may be required to facilitate sheet pile installation. Predrilling/Preforming pile holes

shall be made such that dense soil layers are penetrated and loosened but soil is not extracted

and an open excavation is not created. The contractor shall submit in writing the proposed

predrilling/preforming methods and equipment to the engineer for approval at least 30 days

prior to the start of sheet pile installation. The cost of predrilling/preforming, punching,

etc. shall be included in the cost of Steel Sheet Piling, Pay Item 455-133-3.

8. The Cost Of Furnishing And Installing Permanent Sheet Piling Shall Be Included In The

Contract Unit Price For Steel Sheet Piling (Furnish & Install) Item 455-133-3.

1. CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS:

Florida Department of Transportation "Standard Specifications for Road and

Bridge Construction", (2010) and supplements thereto.

3. MATERIAL STRESSES: All allowable stresses shall be in accordance with

the current AASHTO Specifications for all the materials shown on the plans.

a. Sheet Pile Steel: ASTM A572, Grade 50

b. Concrete: Use Class IV Concrete f’c=5500 psi

c. Reinforcing Steel: ASTM A615, Grade 60

12. Contractor shall be aware that installation of sheeting may damage adjacent facilities.

Contractor will be responsible for repairing any damage as directed by the engineer at

no additional cost. Provide survey and vibration monitoring procedures in accordance with

Section 455-1.1 of the FDOT Standard Specifications.

13. Tabulated values are used for design assumptions.

14. The Contractor’s Operations shall not Exceed the Design Live Load. It is the

Contractor’s Responsibility to Choose Construction Methods that will not Damage

the Sheet Pile During Compaction and Other Phases of the Construction.

15. Environment: Moderately Aggressive for Concrete, Extremely Aggressive for Steel.

16. Jetting will not be permitted for sheet pile installation.

9. Utilities shall be checked for conflict with the sheet piling, and relocated as required

prior to installation of the sheet piling. Where utility conflicts arise the Contractor

shall submit his utilities and/or sheet piling modifications to the engineer for approval.

(Data concerning type and location of underground and other utilities is not guaranteed

to be accurate or all inclusive. The Contractor is responsible for making his own

determinations as to the type and location.)

11. Permanent Sheet pile walls were designed for 3 Inch max. deflection.

10. The Contractor shall use grade A572 (grade 50) or substitute with high grade

(ie: A572 grade 60) steel sheet piling at no additional cost to the Client.

WALL CONTROL DETAIL

7. The exposed surface of the steel sheet piling and outside face of slide

gate pipe is to be shop coated with "Three Coat System" Comprised of an

inorganic Zinc Primer and two coats of coal tar-epoxy in accordance

with Specification Section 560-14. The cost of corrosion protection shall

be included in the contract price of Pay Item No. 455-133-3. Include

painting from Top of pile to five feet below the proposed ground line.

The color of the coal tar epoxy will be Black.

moment, and minimum section modulus as indicated on sheet pile wall drawing.

7. The slide gate pipe shall be shop welded within one section of sheet pile such that the

interlocks are not interrupted by the pipe penetration. The pipe may use bolted flange

plates to facilitate handling and erection.
