Reeperbahn Festival Arts begann vor sieben Jahren mit einer kleinen Verkaufs-ausstellung des American Poster Institute auf dem Spielbudenplatz und ein paar Führungen von Stefanie Hempel an die alten Wirkungsstätten der Beatles. Aus dem beschaulichen Ergänzungsprogramm zu Reeperbahn Festival Music und Reeper-bahn Festival Campus ist längst eine dritte, eigenständige Sparte gewachsen. Heute bietet Reeperbahn Festival Arts neben den mittlerweile stets überfüllten Beatles-Touren und der inzwischen raumgreifenden Flatstock Europe Poster Convention über vierzig Programmpunkte in mehr als zwan-zig Spielstätten.

In diesem Jahr haben wir einen besonde-ren Schwerpunkt auf den Ausbau des Film-programms, der Literaturangebote und der Thementouren gelegt. Nicht von ungefähr findet ihr deshalb auch Kooperationen mit dem Filmfest Hamburg sowie dem Harbour Front Literaturfestival. Und wir steigen in eine ganz neue Sparte, Digital Arts, selbst-bewusst gleich mit vier Programmen ein!Einzelne Programmpunkte an dieser Stelle besonders hervorzuheben fällt eigentlich immer schwer. Ausnahmsweise wollen wir es für einen aber doch tun, weil er zeitlich sehr begrenzt, so schön genreübergeifend und Weltpremiere wie Comeback zugleich ist: Verpasst auf gar keinen Fall Studio Brauns Filmdokumentation und Live-Auf-tritt (von) Fraktus am 20. im Uebel & Ge-fährlich!

Um dies sehr reichhaltige Programmange-bot überhaupt auf die Straße zu bekom-men, mussten wir uns auch räumlich er-weitern: Zusätzlich und erstmals dabei sind in diesem Jahr das Sankt Pauli Museum, Studio-Kino, affenfaust, Die Gesellschaft, Kultwerk West, Oberstübchen sowie viele weitere Spielstätten rund um den Groß-neumarkt.

Viele Programme beginnen bereits tags-über, damit das umfangreiche Angebot aus Reeperbahn Festival Arts auch zeitlich vereinbar ist mit den vielen anderen Pro-grammpunkten des Reeperbahn Festivals.

Für kleine Aufwärmübungen haben wir das Reeperbahn Festival in diesem Jahr um einen Tag nach vorne verlängert. Ganz Un-geduldige können bereits am Mittwoch, 19. September diverse Spielstätten tagsüber und abends besuchen.

Reeperbahn Festival Arts got its start seven years ago with a small sales exhibition or-ganised by the American Poster Institute on Spielbudenplatz and a few guided tours of the places where the Beatles made history led by Stefanie Hempel. This modest pro-gramme, which functioned as a supplement to Reeperbahn Festival Music and Ree-perbahn Festival Campus, has long since grown into a third, independent branch of the festival. Today, in addition to the Beatles tours (which are always packed) and the Flatstock Europe Poster Convention (which is now vast), Reeperbahn Festival Arts also offers over forty events at more than twenty venues.This year we’ve placed particular empha-sis on developing the film programme, the literature offerings, and the thematic tours. It’s thus no coincidence that you’ll find cooperative projects with the Filmfest Hamburg and the Harbour Front Literatur-festival at Reeperbahn Festival 2012. And we’re taking our first confident steps into an entirely new field, digital arts, with four programmes on offer.We always find it a bit difficult to highlight individual programme offerings here. But we do want to make an exception for one particular event because it is of very limi-ted duration, is so wonderfully cross-genre, and is both a world premiere and comeback at the same time: whatever you do, don’t miss Studio Braun’s film documentary and live performance “Fraktus” on the 20th at Uebel & Gefährlich!Such a large and varied programme has meant expanding into new spaces. And so for this year’s festival we’ve added the following venues: Sankt Pauli Museum, Studio-Kino, affenfaust, Die Gesellschaft, Kultwerk West, Oberstübchen, as well as many additional locations around Groß-neumarkt.And to ensure that the Reeperbahn Festival Arts’ vast array of offerings doesn’t overlap too much with the many other events that make up the Reeperbahn Festival, many of the arts events get under way during the day.To make room for a few “warm-up” ac-tivities we’ve extended the Reeperbahn Festival this year by one day: for the truly impatient amongst you, diverse venues will have something to offer on Wednesday, September 19.

Da die Flatstock Europe Poster Con-vention schon zum liebgewonnenen Repertoire des Reeperbahn Festivals gehört und wir nicht auf die vielen tollen Plakatkünstler verzichten wollen, haben wir sie auch in diesem Jahr wieder ein-geladen. Unter den mehr als 40 interna-tionalen Flatstock-Künstlern finden sich berühmte Größen wie Stanley Mouse und John Vogl aus den USA oder Mer-cadorama aus Mexiko, aber auch lokale Bekanntheiten wie Zum Heimathafen aus Hamburg.Die Rock-Art-Poster-Convention Flatstock ist in Nordamerika bereits seit 2002 fest etabliert. Seit 2006 findet sie in Zusam-menarbeit mit dem American Poster Institute und mit Unterstützung von Feinkunst Krüger auch im Rahmen des Reeperbahn Festivals statt. Nun macht Flatstock Europe auch wieder im Herzen Hamburgs Station und schlägt ihre Zelte auf dem Spielbudenplatz in St. Pauli auf. Drei Tage können Liebhaber, Sammler und Neuentdecker feinste Konzert- und Artist-Poster entdecken und bestaunen. Es sind Kunstwerke mit leuchtenden Farben und einmaligen Motiven, die nur in einer kleinen Auflage produziert werden. Nutzt also diese exklusive Gelegenheit, und erwerbt einen hand-signierten, limitierten Siebdruck eurer Lieblingsband.

The Flatstock Europe Poster Convention has become a cherished event in the Reeperbahn Festival repertoire, and so it’ll come as no surprise that we’ve in-vited Flatstock and its amazing poster artists back for 2012. Among more than forty international Flatstock artists in attendance this year will be big names like Stanley Mouse and John Vogl from the USA and Mercadorama from Mexi-co, as well as local celebrities like Zum Heimathafen from Hamburg.The Rock-Art-Poster-Convention Flatstock has been a fixture in North America since 2002; since 2006 it has also been held as part of the Reeperbahn Festival, in cooperation with the American Poster Institute and with the support of Fein-kunst Krüger. With Flatstock Europe 8, the convention makes a stop in Ham-burg once again, pitching its tents in the heart of the city, on the Spielbudenplatz in St. Pauli. For three whole days, con-noisseurs, collectors, and the curious can discover and marvel at the very best concert and band posters around. DIE WAHRHEIT ÜBER DIE BEATLES

STADTFÜHRUNGS-ENTERTAINMENT MIT ALEXANDER POSCH UND SVEN AMTSBERGOhne Hamburg wären die Beatles nie denkbar gewesen. Jedes Lied durch-strömt hanseatisches Lebensgefühl, und mit Titeln wie „Reeperbahn, Only a Northern Song“ oder „Michelle“, in dem sie das gleichnamige Bauwerk besin-gen, haben sie Hamburg auch musika-lisch ein Denkmal gesetzt.Gegründet wurden die Beatles 1960 von dem Kaufmann Peter Bohnsen, der auch die Songs schrieb. Die ersten Jah-re traten sie jeden Abend für Schnaps und eine Kiste Bier im legendären Ham-burger Starclub auf, was jene exaltierte Ausgelassenheit erklärt, die die Beatles letztlich so berühmt machte.

SIGHTSEEING TOUR ENTERTAINMENT WITH ALEXANDER POSCH AND SVEN AMTSBERGThe Beatles and Hamburg are insepa-rable. The Hanseatic way of life fl ows through each song and titles such as “Reeperbahn, Only a Northern Song” or “Michelle” which is about the buil-ding of the same name, they have given Hamburg a musical monument. The Beatles were founded in 1960 by the businessman Peter Bohnsen, who also wrote the songs. In the fi rst years they performed at the legendary Star-club of Hamburg for schnapps and a crate of beer what explains the eccen-tric exuberance which made the Beatles fi nally became so popular.

Es gibt viele Beatles-Touren auf St. Pau-li, aber nur ein Original! Die musikali-sche Beatles-Tour mit Stefanie Hempel. Seit vielen Jahren führt sie musizierend mit einer kleinen Ukulele durch das berühmt berüchtigte Rotlichtviertel St. Pauli. Stefanie Hempel ist längst eine Institution auf dem Hamburger Kiez und gilt als die Beatles-Kennerin schlecht-hin. Sympathisch und augenzwinkernd erzählt sie Geschichten und Anekdoten von einem wilden Rock’n‘Roll-Leben der Fabulous Four. Zum Reeperbahn Festival endet die Tour mit einem Konzert im St. Pauli Museum.

There are many Beatles tours on St. Pauli but only one original tour! The mu-sical Beatles tour with Stefanie Hem-pel. For many years now she has been guiding through the notorious red light district St. Pauli, all the while playing on her small ukulele. Stefanie Hempel has already become a permanent esta-blishment at the Hamburg “Kiez” – the hood – and is considered the Beatles expert as such. In a friendly way and not too seriously she tells stories and anec-dotes of the wild Rock’n‘Roll life of the Fabulous Four.During the Reeperbahn Festival the tour will end with a concert at the St. Pauli Museum.

Die Dokumentation „FRAKTUS – Das letzte Kapitel der Musikgeschichte” erzählt die Geschichte einer der ein-flussreichsten Bands deutscher Mu-sikhistorie: FRAKTUS. Die „Urväter des Techno“ existierten zwar als Band nur vier Jahre, haben aber mit ihrem visionären Sound entscheidend die Electronic-Szene weltweit geprägt. Anlässlich der von STUDIO BRAUN (Jacques Palminger, Rocko Schamo-ni, Heinz Strunk) präsentierten Doku-mentation geben die drei auch auf der Bühne ihr Comeback - nach 25 Jahren. DER FILM. DAS KONZERT. DIE PARTY.FRAKTUS schreiben erneut Geschichte. Und diesmal können alle dabei sein.

The documentary “FRAKTUS—The Final Chapter of Music History” tells the story of one of the most influen-tial bands in the history of German music: FRAKTUS. Although as a band the “forefathers of Techno” were only around for four years, they had a de-cisive impact on the worldwide elec-tronic scene with their visionary sound.To celebrate the documentary, presented by STUDIO BRAUN (Jacques Palminger, Rocko Schamoni, Heinz Strunk), the three members will be making their stage comeback—after twenty-five years. Die Hamburger Künstlergruppe A Wall is a Screen zieht zum Reeperbahn Festi-val wieder mit Kurzfilmen durch das Herz von St. Pauli. Der Kurzfilm-Rundgang ist eine Kombination aus Freiluft-Kino und Stadtrundgang, bei dem Umgebung und Film miteinander verschmelzen. So wird der Kiez in ein neues Licht getaucht, die Architektur wird zur Leinwand, das Straßenpflaster zum Kinosessel. Und der passende Sound schallt live und vor Ort von den Straßen St. Paulis herüber.

During the Reeperbahn Festival Ham-burg group of artists A Wall is a Screen will again tour through the heart of St. Pauli with short films. The filmlet round trip is a combination of open-air cinema and city tour in which surroundings and films merge together, with the “Kiez” presenting itself in a new light, buil-dings become screens and the pave-ment transforms into a cinema seat. And the right sound bounces then and there live from the streets of St. Pauli.

„Flammend Herz“ erzählt die Geschich-te von drei Männern um die neunzig, die so gar nicht den üblichen Klischees über tätowierte Menschen entsprechen. Herbert, der etablierte Geschäftsmann und Gründer der „Ältesten Tätowier-stube Deutschlands“, Karlmann, der vornehme Sohn großbürgerlicher Eltern, und Albert, der holländische Seemann, überwanden sämtliche gesellschaftli-chen Schranken, um gemeinsam ihre Leidenschaft fürs Tätowieren auszule-ben. Die Geschichte handelt von Liebe, Verrat und Enttäuschung, von Haltung und Leidenschaft, von Hamburg als zen-tralem Ort der Sehnsucht nach einem außergewöhnlichen Leben.

“Flammend Herz“ (Blue Skin), tells the story of three men around ninety who fail to conform to the usual stereotyped images of people with tattoos. Herbert, the well-established businessman and founder of the “oldest tattoo studio in Germany,” Karlmann, the distinguished son of upper middle class parents, and Albert, the Dutch sailor, overcame social barriers in order to pursue their passion for tattooing. It’s a story about love, be-trayal, and disappointment, about out-look and passion, about Hamburg as a central locus of desire for a remarkable way of life.

SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS

Die Rockband The High Speed Karma-geddon wagten im August 2011 ein schräges Abenteuer. Sie drehten einen Kinofilm über sich selbst mit nur 10.000 Euro, einer Kamera, drei Baustrahlern und 130 Laiendarstellern. Heraus kam eine Komödie über die talentierte, aber dennoch erfolglose Band The High Speed Karmageddon, die einen ver-lockenden Plattenvertrag ablehnt und beschließt, ihren Weg nach „oben“ ohne schmierige Plattenfirmenfuzzis zu gehen. Ihre Hoffnung ruht auf dem durchge-knallten Musikproduzenten Jack Pott, der seltsamerweise alle sechs Jahre, sechs Monate und sechs Tage ein Hit-Album produziert.

In August 2011 the rock band The High Speed Karmageddon embarked on a weird adventure. They shot a cinema film about themselves on a budget of just 10,000 euros, a camera, three con-struction lamps and 130 amateur actors and actresses. What ended up is a co-medy about the gifted, but unsuccessful band The High Speed Karmageddon. They refuse a tempting offer and decide to make their way “up” without smar-my record label freaks. They place their hope in the potty music producer Jack Pott who, strangely enough, produces a hit album every six years, six months and six days.

Es war ein überraschender Abschied, den die erfolgreiche Dance-Punk-Combo LCD Soundsystem im vergangenen Jahr hin-legte: Am 2. April 2011 betrat die Band ein letztes Mal die ganz große Bühne im Madison Square Garden. Für die Fans kam die Entscheidung von Bandleader James Murphy ziemlich unerwartet, doch er hatte sich ganz bewusst zu die-sem Schritt entschieden. Es sollte der aufregendste und spektakulärste Auf-tritt der Band werden. Im Rahmen des Reeperbahn Festivals präsentiert das Filmfest Hamburg den Dokumentarfilm „Shut Up and Play the Hits“, der James Murphy durch die 48 Stunden vor diesem letzten Konzert bis zum Morgen danach begleitet.

It was a surprising farewell which the successful Dance-Punk band LCD Sound-system gave us last year: The band went on the big stage of Madison Square Gar-den for the last time on 2 April 2011. For their fans, bandleader James Murphey’s decision came as a surprise, but he had carefully considered this step. It was to be the most thrilling and sensational per-formance of the band. During the Reeper-bahn Festival the Filmfest Hamburg will present the documentary “Shut Up and Play the Hits“ which accompanies James Murphy through the 48 hours before the last concert to the morning after. Vinyl ist out, und Amerikas dünn gesäte Plattenläden sprenkeln die Landschaft wie Tempel der Vergänglichkeit. „Music Man Murray“ bringt uns in der Stunde ihres Untergangs zur größten Platten-sammlung der Welt und untersucht die komplizierte Hinterlassenschaft des Mannes, der diese Sammlung angelegt hat, des über achtzigjährigen Murray Gershenz.Obwohl das Geschäft noch nie schlech-ter gewesen ist, verbringt Murray (ein ehemaliger Synagogenkantor und Opern-Fan) immer noch die meiste Zeit bei seiner Sammlung in seinem Ge-schäft, zu finden in einem staubigen alten Lagerhaus aus Betonziegeln am Exposition Boulevard in der Nähe der Autobahn Nr. 10 in Los Angeles. Vinyl is dead, and America’s rare re-cord stores now dot the landscape like temples to obsolescence. „Music Man Murray‘ takes us inside of one of the largest record collections in the world at the hour of its demise, and examines the complicated legacy of the man who built it, octogenarian Murray Gershenz.Though business has never been worse, Murray (a former synagogue cantor and opera buff) still spends most days inside the store with his collection, housed in-side a dusty old cinderblock warehouse on Exposition Boulevard off of the 10 freeway in Los Angeles. Nearing 90, Murray has put the business up for sale, but is struggling to find a buyer. Mean-while, Murray‘s son, the emotional Irv, 53, clings to the collection and his father with an almost pathetic obeisance—though he must soon say goodbye to both, forever. The drama between the sensible father and emotional son, dual eccentrics who evoke contrasting sympathies in the vie-wer, provides a humorous and moving counterpoint to the story about Murray’s legacy in his 22-minute documentary portrait.

Schriftsteller Frank Schulz, Hamburger Jung mit Leib und Seele, liest aus sei-nem neuen Roman„Onno Viets und der Irre vom Kiez“. Alles beginnt und endet mit der Hauptfigur Onno, der zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben eine richtig gute Idee hat, oder nicht? Er ist Mitte 50, Hartz-IV-Empfänger, leicht phobisch und Noppensockenträger, bekennender Nichtschwitzer und doch ungeschla-gener Meister einer Ping-Pong-Runde, die jeden Montag in der Turnhalle des Günther-Jauch-Gymnasiums in Eppen-dorf zusammentrifft. Onno ist pleite, der Geburtstag seiner geliebten Frau Edda steht vor der Tür, und das Finanzamt sitzt ihm auch im Nacken. Rettung ver-spricht eine Eingebung aus dem Fernse-hen: Er wird Privatdedektiv! Einer seiner Freunde verhilft ihm zum ersten Fall. Der Poptitan und Juror einer Casting-Show, Nick Dolan, hat die leise Ahnung, dass ihn seine aktuelle Flamme, die Burlesque-Tänzerin Fiona Popo, betrügt. The author Frank Schulz, a born and bred Hamburg boy, will read from his new no-vel „Onno Viets und der Irre vom Kiez“. The story begins and ends with the main character Onno who has a really good idea for the first time in his life, or hasn’t he? He is in his mid-fifties, on the dole, slightly phobic and wears nubbed socks, is a professed non-sweater and the still unbeaten champion of a ping-pong group getting together every Monday in the Günther-Jauch secondary school gym in Eppendorf. Onno is broke, the birthday of his beloved wife Edda is ap-proaching and the tax office is breathing down his neck. An inspiration triggered by a TV programme promises relief: He will become a private investigator! One of his friends provides him his first case. The pop titan and casting show juror Nick Dolan has a vague notion that his current flame, the burlesque dancer Fi-ona Popo is unfaithful. Onno searches the Reeperbahn for evidence and meets Dolan’s rival nicknamed „Händchen“ (little hand). He is two metres tall and weighs about 130kg and is the dreaded right hand of the Kiez oligarch … Frank Schulz will tell you in person how the story goes on and whether Onno survives his first case at the Imperial Theatre on Saturday.

Türsteher sind dumm und brutal. Das weiß doch jeder. Viktor, Mark und Hen-ning, zwei aktive und ein ehemaliger Türsteher diverser Kiez-Etablissements, beweisen, dass das gängige Klischee mitnichten zutrifft: Türsteher dürfen durchaus auch clever sein und dabei wortgewaltig mit brutalen Sätzen um sich werfen. Zusammen haben die drei rund 50 Jahre Kiezerfahrung. Das heißt 50 Jahre Leute beobachten, die an ihnen vorbeiziehen und sich auf die eine oder andere Art körper-lich, geistig und seelisch entblößen. Ein Abend voller skurriler Geschich-ten aus dem Hamburger Nachtleben.

Bouncers are stupid brutes. Everyone knows that. Viktor, Mark, and Henning, two bouncers and one ex-bouncer from different St. Pauli clubs, are proof that this widespread stereotype is actually wide off the mark: bouncers can indeed be a pretty clever bunch and bandy about brutal words with a bold eloquence. Together the three have roughly fi fty years of experience in the St. Pauli Kiez meaning fi fty years of watching people who drift past them and reveal, in one way or another, their physical, mental, and emotional selves. It’ll be an eve-ning of odd tales of Hamburg nightlife.

On Friday, affenfaust will host a rea-ding by Hamburg writer and painter Be’shan. Most of his stories involve fantastical plots set against realistic backdrops. Topical issues are presen-ted in a bizarre and humorous style, in a language that’s light and fl owing.Ecstatic parties, a dying young pop star, a fat little king who cannot speak, life in a surveillance state, or a billionaire searching for truth. Although the stories almost always have a gloomy end, they’re at least guaranteed to make you laugh.

So gründeten sie im Jahr 2005 das kanadische Zine „1234V“ und bringen Geschichten ans Tageslicht, die zum Lachen bringen, nach Luft schnappen lassen oder mitun-ter auch abstoßen.Jo Snyder wird ausgewählte Stücke verschiedener „1234V“-Ausgaben lesen und in einem anschließenden Konzert beweisen, dass ihre Musik ebenso kraft-voll daherkommt wie ihre Texte.

“1234V” is a Canadian zine that seeks to tell the world more about that su-pernatural and inexplicable creature… yes, that female organ known as the vagina. Founded in 2005 by Canadian musician Jo Snyder and Sarah Michael-son the zine recounts stories that make us laugh, gasp, and, on occasion, recoil in disgust. Jo Snyder will read selected pieces from a few different issues of “1234V” and in a concert following her reading, she will prove that her music is as powerful as her prose.

Auch in diesem Jahr präsentieren die Jungs vom Kampf der Künste dem Ree-perbahn Festival ein paar feine Poeten. Es gilt wie immer: die Wort-Akrobaten haben fünf Minuten Zeit, um sich den fünf Juroren aus dem Publikum zu stellen und den Abend für sich zu ent-scheiden. Es kann gelacht, gebannt ge-lauscht, gejohlt oder gebuht werden. In jedem Fall wird es wieder eine Freude, davon ist auszugehen. Also, auf geht‘s zum Kampf der Künste!Unter den Wortpoeten sind u.a. dabei: Frank Klötgen, Torsten Sträter und Mi-cha-El Goehre.

This year the people from Kampf der Künste will come up again with some fi ne poets at the Reeperbahn Festival. As always the motto is: the word ac-robats have fi ve minutes to present themselves to the fi ve jurors from the audience and win the competition. All is fair – laughing, listening, hooting and jeering! In any case, it will be delightful again, that much is sure. Landratten und Seeleute sind die Pro-tagonisten in Michael Buschows Ge-schichten. Am Freitag nimmt er euch mit unter Deck, dort wo am Abend nach getaner Arbeit eifrig Seemannsgarn gesponnen wird, Schnapsfl aschen ge-leert werden und Matrosen auf leichte Mädchen treffen. Buschow beschreibt in seinen kurzen Episoden das Leben und die Menschen im Hafen, eigentüm-liche Charaktere wie die titelgebende Poller-Elly, eine alternde Hafenhure, oder Tattoo Theo, einen von Kopf bis Fuß tätowierten Ex-Luden aus St. Pauli. Die Kurzgeschichten erzählen vom wah-ren Leben, nichts ist ausgedacht. Naja, fast nichts.Es wird aber nicht nur einen Ohren-schmaus geben – das Oberstübchen serviert an dem Abend der Lesung das Lieblingsessen des Autors. Kommt vor-bei und genießt!

The protagonists of Michael Buschow’s stories are landlubbers and sailors. On Friday he will take you below deck where, after a day’s work, a lot of sailor’s yarns are spun, bottles of schnapps are emptied and seamen meet fl oosies. In brief episodes Buschow describes the lives of people of the harbour, peculiar characters such as Poller Elly, the lady in the title, an aging whore or Tattoo Theo, a former St. Pauli pimp tattooed from head to toe. The short stories are derived from real life, nothing is fi ction. Well, next to nothing. There won’t just be food for the ears – the Oberstübchen will serve the author’s favourite food. Von Knopfs Lichtspielhaus ab 1906 bis zu den psychedelischen Lightshows der 60er Jahre im Gruenspan war die Reeperbahn auch immer ein Ort, an dem bewegte Bil-der auf Klänge trafen und sich zu Träumen aller Art verbinden konnten. Das Feld der visuellen Musik wird zu dieser Zeit durch immer neue technische Innovationen voran-getrieben. Es steckte die Idee dahinter, mu-sikalische Strukturen sichtbar und sinnlich erfahrbar zu machen, zum Beispiel wie ein Cis aussieht oder welche Farben ein A-Dur-Akkord haben könnte.An zwei Abenden werden auf dem Spielbu-denplatz kurze Filme zu den Wundern digita-ler Bild- und Klangwelten gezeigt.

Am 22. September wird die Hamburger Lichtkünstlerin Katrin Bethge auf der Reeperbahn eine Fassade am Spielbu-denplatz mit ihren Projektionen illumi-nieren.Die Projektionsbilder entstehen analog mittels unterschiedlicher Materialien wie Wasser, Zucker oder Glasschüsseln, die direkt auf der Projektionsfläche be-wegt werden, zum Teil von kleinen Ro-tationsmotoren.Dieser „Echtzeitfilm“, der aus der di-rekten Übertragung der Bewegung auf der Arbeitsplatte des Projektors in den Raum entsteht, wird von 22.00 bis 00.00 Uhr zu sehen sein.

On 22 September the Hamburg based light artist Katrin Bethge will illuminate a facade at Spielbudenplatz on the Ree-perbahn with her projections. The projected images are created ana-logically with different materials such as water, sugar or glass bowls, moved directly on the projection surface partly by small rotation motors. This “real-time film”, resulting from the direct transmission of motion on the worktop of the projector into space can be seen from 22.00 to 00.00.

Am 22. September findet dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal der Hamburger „PARK(platz)Tag“ begleitend zum Ree-perbahn Festival statt und verwandelt die Straßen von St. Pauli in kleine grüne Oasen. An unterschiedlichen Orten zwi-schen Reeperbahn und Neuer Pferde-markt werden Autoparkplätze in öffent-liche Parks und Grünflächen verwandelt. In Anlehnung an den aus New York stammenden und seit Jahren weltweit durchgeführten „Park(ing)Day“ heißt es somit für einen Tag: Wir erobern uns den Straßenraum zurück und verwandeln ihn in Freizeit - und Erholungsflächen. Am ersten Hamburger „PARK(platz)Tag“ gibt es auf den Straßen St. Paulis Rasen-grün, Liegestühle, Barbecue und Musik, statt Asphalt, Autos und Abgasen.Warum das alles? Ganz einfach: Jedem Einwohner Hamburgs stehen gerade mal 12,5 qm öffentlicher Park zur Ver-fügung - in stark verdichteten Teilen der Stadt wie St. Pauli sogar noch weniger – aber 15 qm öffentliche Straßen- und Verkehrsfläche. Am „PARK(platz)Tag“ wird der öffentliche Raum zur Dispositi-on gestellt, die Nutzung von öffentlichen Plätzen und Straßen kritisch hinterfragt. Der Straßenraum wird zurückerobert und es entsteht Raum für Kommunika-tion und gegenseitigen Austausch. Die genauen Orte lassen sich nur durch das Durchstreifen der Straßen entdecken, also kommt vorbei!

The streets of St. Pauli will be dotted with small green oases on Hamburg’s PARK(platz)Tag, to be held on Septem-ber 22, 2012, in conjunction with the Reeperbahn Festival. In a variety of loca-tions situated between the Reeperbahn and Neuer Pferdemarkt, parking spaces will be converted into public parks and green areas. Following the example of Park(ing)Day, which originated in New York and is now observed around the world, PARK(platz)Tag participants will take back the streets for one day and transform them into leisure and recreational areas. On Hamburg’s first PARK(platz)Tag, the streets of St. Pauli will feature lawns, deckchairs, barbe-cue and music in place of asphalt, cars, and exhaust. What’s this all about? Very simple: there are only 12.5 square me-ters of public park space per Hamburg resident - in highly concentrated parts of the city, like St. Pauli, this number is even lower as compared with 15 square meters of public street- and traffic zo-nes. PARK(platz)Tag is an opportunity to examine the role of public space and scrutinize the use of streets and public areas. Hamburg streets will be “reta-ken”, making room for communication and exchange. The exact locations can only be found by roaming the streets of St. Pauli, so be sure to wander by!

Seit Beginn des Reeperbahn Festivals ist Ralf Krüger, Initiator und Mitver-anstalter der Flatstock Convention sowie begleitender Kurator des Arts-Programms, dabei, dieses Jahr mit der Ausstellung „The Harder They Cum ...“ des Kölner Künstlers Thomas Grund-mann. Der Künstler wird neue, großfor-matige Papierarbeiten zeigen, die sich auf den Gebrauch von schwarzer Tusche beschränken. Grundmann, der sich sowohl in der Tattoo-Szene wie auch in der bildenden Kunst einen Namen gemacht hat, ent-wirft kraftvolle, energische Werke, die ihre Inspiration aus der Tätowier-Tradi-tion, der Musik und aus der Popkultur beziehen.

Ralf Krüger, initiator and co-organiser of the Flatstock Convention and associate curator of the Arts programme, is in on the action again this year—this time around with the exhibition titled „The Harder They Cum ...“ by Cologne artist Thomas Grundmann. The artist shows new, large-format works on paper; all were created using black Indian ink. Grundmann, who has made a name for himself both in the tattoo and art worlds, produces powerful, dynamic works. The tattoo tradition, pop culture and music are sources of inspiration of his powerful art works.

Am 1. September eröffnete Art Nerd Invasion New York die Ausstellung „George Hearts Maria“. Die von Lori Zimmer kuratierte Schau hat sich in die Sommerausstellung von heliumcowboy eingenistet und eine Galerie in der Ga-lerie geschaffen. Hintergrund ist die Geschichte von Prinz George von Wales, der sich im Jahre 1785 in die bürgerliche Maria Fitzherbert verliebte. Da diese Liebe nicht erlaubt war, ließen sich beide Miniaturen ihrer Augen füreinander malen, die sie stets mit sich herumtrugen. „George Hearts Maria“ bat zeitgenössische Künstler, die verloren gegangene Tradition der Augenminiaturen neu zu interpretieren.

On 1 September Art Nerd Invasion New York opened its exhibition “George Hearts Maria”. Curator of the exhibition Lori Zimmer settled down in the summer exposition of heliumcowboy, creating a gallery inside a gallery. Background to the show is the story of Prince George of Wales, who fell in love with the commoner Maria Fitzherbert in 1785. As this love was impermissible the two of them had their eyes painted as miniatures that they always carried around. “George Hearts Maria” invited contem-porary artists to give fresh impetus to the lost tradition of eye miniatures.

Es ist der 8. April 1967: Um 21.15 Uhr wird Stefan Heyer im Marienhospital in Essen geboren, während gleich um die Ecke die Band The Who die Grugahalle in Schutt und Asche legt. Wie sich heraus-stellte, sollte dieses Ereignis kein Zufall sein und einen nachhaltigen Einfluss im Leben von Stefan Heyer hinterlassen. Seit jeher bezieht der in Hamburg leben-de Künstler seine Inspiration und Motiva-tion aus dem weiten Feld der Popkultur, befeuert vom Streben, das Stoffliche zu spiritualisieren und in nichtsprachliche Bereiche vorzustoßen. Das Designstudio Gudberg zeigt Heyers groß- und kleinfor-matige Ölmalereien.

It’s April 8, 1967: at 21.15 Stefan Heyer is born in the delivery room of the Marien-hospital in Essen, while just around the corner The Who is rocking the Grugahalle to the ground. As it turned out, this oc-currence would not be incidental: it had an enduring influence on Stefan Heyer’s life. The Hamburg-based artist has al-ways drawn inspiration and motivation from the vast field of pop culture, spurred on by a quest to spiritualise the material and venture into the non-linguistic. The design studio Gudberg presents his lar-ge- and small-format oil paintings.

Im PureSoul Records treffen Silke Thoss und Bob Tooke aufeinander, um für euch in der Plattenkiste nach wahren Schät-zen aus den 60ies, 70ies und der Soul-Musik zu graben. Beide sind sie sowohl künstlerisch als auch musikalisch tätig und verknüpfen dies konsequent in ihren Werken. Silke Thoss lässt in ihren plastischen Montagen Musiker verschiedener Jahr-zehnte und Epochen in humorvoller Wei-se aufeinandertreffen. In den Werken Bob Tookes, auch bekannt als DM Bob, ist die enge thematische Verbindung zwischen seiner Kunst, Mu-sik und Herkunft aus Louisiana deutlich zu spüren. Seine Gemälde sind freund-lich, albern und verspielt, erzählen flüchtige Geschichten voller Ironie und geheimnisvollem Witz.

Silke Thoss and Bob Tooke (also known as DM Bob) join up at PureSoul Records to rummage through a true treasure chest of vinyl, digging for genuine Soul music gems from the sixties and seven-ties. Both Silke and Bob are active as artists and musicians and consistently combine art and music in their work. In her sculptural montages, Thoss brings to-gether musicians from different decades and eras in a humorous way. In Tooke’s work, the close thematic link between his art, music, and Louisiana roots is on clear display. His paintings are bright, silly, and playful, and tell fleeting stories replete with irony and enigmatic wit.

Das Kamm In ver-eint in einem einzigartigen Ladenkon-zept Friseursalon und Mini-Rock-Café. Ohlendorff gelingt es, Geschichte leben-dig werden zu lassen, Musik sichtbar und fühlbar zu machen. Jeder Abend wird mit feiner Live-Musik abgerundet.

In his exhibition “Dead Rock Heads” An-dreas Ole Ohlendorff will present old and new works from this well known painting cycle “Legends of Rock Music”, a pictori-al homage to deceased Rock, Pop, Beat, Blues, Jazz, and Punk musicians. And what could possibly be a better location for these heads than a hair salon with a musical soul? A rather unique business idea, Kamm In is a hair salon and mini rock-café. Ohlendorff does succeed in bringing history to life, making the music behind the images visible and palpable. Each evening will be topped off with ex-cellent live music.

Moby taucht in die Kunstwelt ein und wütet am Ende vor den Hamburger Landungsbrücken. Allen die sich jetzt fragen, „Was ist denn da passiert?“ und vor allem „Wie geht es weiter?“, können wir nur raten: Kommt vorbei, und schaut es euch einfach an. Der weissraumhamburg zeigt mit der Ausstellung „Dispopular Paintings“ dreidimensionale, aus Holz gebastelte Werke von Silke Thoss.

Die Eröffnung findet am Donnerstagabend im Rahmen der Releaseparty „The Do You Knows“ statt, ein Buchprojekt von Michael Schmid. Darin porträtiert er vier Ausnahmemusiker, die sich 2011 unter dem Namen „The Do You Knows“ als „Supergroup“ zusammengefunden haben: die Punk-Ikone und Filmmusikerin Cat Co-rona, der legendäre Krautdrummer Stefan Kreiner, Leadgitarrist und Glam-Rock-Idol Harry Snyder und der Medienkünstler und Keyboarder Joshua Schwarz.

Das Magazin will be displayed in the room for print art, a small but attractive exhibition with national and international Independent Music Art & Fanzines. The exhibition will be opened on Thursday evening during the release party “The Do You Knows”, a book project by Micha-el Schmid. It portraits four exceptional musicians who got together as a „super group“ called The Do You Knows in 2011: The punk icon and film musician Cat Coro-na, and the legendary Kraut drummer Ste-fan Kreiner, lead guitarist and glam rock idol Harry Snyder as well as the media artist and keyboarder Joshua Schwarz.

Mit Künstler Peter Klint eröffnet die Galerie affenfaust ihr diesjähriges Pro-gramm zum Reeperbahn Festival. Auf 30 qm Ausstellungsfläche versammeln sich farbkräftige, figurative Malereien, die von einem experimentellen Umgang mit Farbe, Kontrasten und Perspektiven zeugen. Unter dem Titel „Die Quadratur des Leibes“ sind kleinformatige Werke zu sehen, in denen Peter Klint Szenen des alltäglichen Lebens, Gefühle und intime Momente einfängt. Menschen, die in sich gekehrt in abwesender Stille verweilen oder uns provozierend, mit ironischem Blick entgegenschauen, stehen meist im Fokus seiner Bilder.

affenfaust gallery’s 2012 Reeperbahn Festival programme opens with north German artist Peter Klint. The gallery’s thirty square metres of exhibition space will be filled with intensely colourful, figurative paintings that reveal Klint’s experimental approach to colour, cont-rast, and perspective. Titled “Squaring the Body”, the exhibition will feature small-format works in which Klint has skilfully captured scenes of everyday life, feelings, and intimate moments. The focus of his paintings tends to be people, lost in thought, who linger in a sort of absent calm or, provoking us, look outward with ironic gazes.

Der wohl berühmteste Stadtteil Ham-burgs hat wechselvolle Zeiten erlebt, die in der ständigen Ausstellung des Sankt Pauli Museums „Aus Geschichten wird Geschichte“ lebendig wird. Ergän-zend dazu zeigt die aktuelle Sonderaus-stellung „Kiezleben. Und leben lassen. 50 Jahre St. Pauli – gesehen und foto-grafiert von Günter Zint“ den Kiez der 60er, 70er und 80er Jahre. Da man auf einer Entdeckungsreise durch St. Pau-li nicht an den Beatles vorbeikommt, treffen wir am Freitagabend auf die Erfinderin der Hamburger Beatles-Tour, Stefanie Hempel. Sie wird um 18.30 Uhr ein Konzert mit Beatles-Songs im Sankt Pauli Museum geben.

In addition, the current special exhibition “Kiezleben. Und leben lassen. 50 Jahre St. Pauli – gesehen und fotografiert von Günter Zint” (Live and let live in the Kiez district. 50 years of St. Pauli – seen and photographed by Günter Zint) shows the `Kiez´of the 60s, 70s and 80s. As you won’t be able to avoid the Beatles on your mystery tour through St. Pauli you can meet the in-ventor of the Hamburg Beatles tour, Ste-fanie Hempel. She will stage a concert with Beatles songs at the Sankt Pauli Museum at 18.30 on Friday.

Das Hamburger Clublexikon ist ein Pro-dukt der 2010 gegründeten und bundes-weit einmaligen Stiftung zur Stärkung privater Musikbühnen Hamburg.Ein Jahr lang haben 64 Fotografen 64 Hamburger Clubs fotografiert – von A wie Astra Stube bis Z wie Zinnschmelze.Die Ergebnisse dieser ungewöhnlichen Streifzüge sind in einer überformatigen und liebevoll zusammengestellten Chro-nik abgebildet. Ein einzigartiges Werk, das die lebendige und vielseitige Club-kultur der Hansestadt in allen Facetten darstellt. Der Erlös des Lexikons fließt zu 100 Prozent in die Stiftung und somit in den Erhalt und Ausbau der Hamburger Live-Musik-Kultur. Die Clubstiftung lädt herzlich zur Vernis-sage am 20. Die Fotografin Katja Ruge zeigt in ihrer Ausstellung eine Fotoserie mit ultimati-ven Synthesizer-Klassikern. Überdimen-sionale Installationen, die sich stets der Raumgröße anpassen, werden Stück für Stück von ihr zusammengesetzt und die-se Raritäten zu neuem Leben erweckt. Wer ebendiese Synthie-Liebe teilt oder Neugier verspürt, diese Instrumen-te zum Klingen zu bringen, erhält am Samstag die einmalige Gelegenheit, in das Studio wahrer Synthesizer-Nerds zu gelangen. Das Synthesizer Studio Ham-burg wird stündlich kleinen Besucher-gruppen Einlass in sein Reich gewähren. Den Auftakt dieser Trilogie machen Katja Ruge und Frank Ilgener mit ihrer Party-Reihe „Kann denn Liebe Synthie sein?“ am Mittwoch um 23.00 Uhr im Gruenspan und laden zum Tanz.

DIE GESELLSCHAFTHAMBURGERS

Die Gesellschaft zeigt HAMBURGERS, ein Projekt des britischen Künstlers Daniel van der Noon und der kanadischen Künst-lerin Andrea Wan. Daniel lebt irgendwo zwischen Aarhus und Kopenhagen. Ne-ben diversen Ausstellungen in seiner künstlerischen Heimat Dänemark sowie in England sind seine feinen, großflächi-gen, aber akribisch genauen Zeichnungen von Gebäuden und schrägen Stadtland-schaften inzwischen auch in Stockholm, London oder Hamburg angekommen.Die Künstlerin Andrea Wan ließ sich von ihrer Abenteuerlust nach Berlin verschla-gen. Dort arbeitet sie zusätzlich zu ihrer Kunst auch als Illustratorin. Ihre narrati-ven Malereien wurden bereits in zahlrei-chen Ländern ausgestellt und wurden in namenhaften Publikationen wie der „New York Times“, „Nobrow“, „Computer Arts“ oder „Beautiful/Decay“ veröffentlicht.HAMBURGERS ist ihre erste gemeinsa-me Ausstellung, die exklusiv im Rahmen des Reeperbahn Festivals stattfindet. Als besonderes Highlight werden Daniel und Andrea am 22. September um 13.00 Uhr live in den Barräumen zeichnen.

Die Gesellschaft presents HAMBURGERS, a project featuring British artist Daniel van der Noon and Canadian artist Andrea Wan. Daniel lives somewhere between Aarhus and Copenhagen. Featured in a variety of exhibition in his artistic home of Denmark as well as in England, his delicate, expansive, but meticulously pre-cise drawings of buildings and off-beat cityscapes have also reached the cities of Stockholm, London, and Hamburg.Andrea Wan’s love of adventure took her to Berlin, where in addition to creating her own art she also works as an illus-trator. Her narrative paintings have been exhibited in numerous countries and have appeared in renowned publications such as “New York Times“, “Nobrow“, “Com-puter Arts“ oder “Beautiful/Decay“.It is the artists’ first joint exhibition and will be held exclusively in conjunction with the Reeperbahn Festival. Der Kiez früherer Zeiten steht für ein romantisches Bild, das den Wirtschafts-boom der 1960er und 70er Jahre spie-gelt. Heute ist davon jedoch wenig übriggeblieben. In Armut und Einsam-keit sitzen die Überlebenden mit ihren Erinnerungen da, abseits von jeglichem Glamour. Die Fotografi n Antonia Zennaro zeigt mit ihrer Fotoreihe „Die verschwindende Meile“, was von den goldenen Zeiten auf dem Kiez übriggeblieben ist. Ihre Fo-tos hängen auf und um den Spielbuden-platz und sind mit einem Code versehen, der längst vergessene Informationen zu den Menschen und Legenden bereithält. Augen auf! The St. Pauli district of old is synony-mous with a romantic idea refl ecting the economic boom of the nineteen-sixties and seventies. Today, however little of this remains. Impoverished and lonely, the survivors are left with their memo-ries; the glamour is gone.In her photo series “Die verschwinden-de Meile” (The Vanishing Mile), photo-grapher Antonia Zennaro shows what remains of the golden days in the Kiez. Her photos mounted on and around the Spielbudenplatz will provide a code that supplies long-lost information about the people and legends. Watch out! There is so much to discover…

Das Kultwerk West präsentiert Lite-ratur, Videokunst, Rauminstallationen und Publikationen zu den Themen „Du Kannst Nicht Mehr Nach Hause Gehen. Reeperbahn, Kellerkneipen, Ekel, Mons-ter, Lähmung des Geistes.“ Die Arbeiten entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit Stu-dierenden der Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg und sind nun drei Tage lang zu hören und zu sehen. Nachwuchs-autoren, -künstler, und -regisseure aus den Bereichen Film, Musik und Theater stellen ihr kreatives Können zu Schau.

The Kultwerk West exhibits literature, video art, installations and publications concerned with the topics “You won’t be able to go home. Reeperbahn, ta-verns, disgust, monsters, paralysis of the brain“. The works were created in cooperation with students of the Hoch-schule für bildende Künste Hamburg (University of Creative Arts) and they can now be seen and heard for three days. New authors, artists and directors from the fi elds of fi lm, music and theatre will display their creative talents.

Nach der furiosen Eröffnung im letzen Jahr laden der FC St. Pauli und Viva con Agua zu einer neuen Ausstellung in der weltweit ersten sozialen Kunstgalerie in einem Fußballstadion ein. Viva con Agua bietet jungen Künstlern eine würdige Platt-form, um ihr künstlerisches Potenzial für sauberes Wasser zu entfalten und ihre Werke aus den Bereichen Street Art, Fotografi e, Illustrationen, Installationen, Malerei, Zeichnungen und Musik einem großen Publikum zu zeigen. Alle Gewin-ne der Millerntor Gallery kommen einem Wasserprojekt in Uganda zugute.

That art, football, and water projects make for a brilliant combination will be in evidence at the Millerntor Galle-ry. After last year’s rousing opening, FC St. Pauli and Viva con Agua invite you to the world’s fi rst socially-minded art gallery in a football stadium. Viva con Agua provides young artists with a dig-nifi ed platform where they can develop their artistic potential, all in the cause of clean water and show their works from the fi elds of street art, photography, il-lustration, installations, paintings, dra-wings, and music to a large audience. All Millerntor Gallery proceeds benefi t a water project in Uganda.

Passend zum zwielichtigen Etablisse-ment auf der Reeperbahn 54 thema-tisieren die Arbeiten des Hamburger Konzeptkünstlers Daniel Hopp das Nachtleben. Collagen verbinden sich mit Illustrationen zu erbarmungslos ehrlichen Abbildern der nächtlichen Erlebniswelt. Fast kann man das Blut durch die Adern seiner Charaktere rasen sehen, die er illustrativ zum Leben er-weckt. In seinen Arbeiten vermischt sich ungehobelte Fiktion mit ergreifender Re-alität und schnürt dem Betrachter nicht selten die Kehle zu. Sein unbändiger Sarkasmus umschmeichelt humoristisch veranlagte Menschen und zerrt ihnen Grimassen ins Gesicht.

Matching to the atmosphere of the see-dy nightclub at Reeperbahn 54 the work of concept artist Daniel Hopp makes the nightlife subject of discussion. Illustra-tions and collage merge into relentlessly honest images of the nocturnal world of experience. You can almost see the blood rush through the veins of his characters, which he brings to life as illustrations. In his works crude fi ction is blending with emotional reality, not rarely rendering the observer speechless. His untamed sarcasm caresses humoristic people, ma-king their faces grimace.

Einen besonderen Leckerbissen be-kommt ihr am Samstag zu sehen und zu hören – Forgotten Birds geben ein Kon-zert in familiärer Atmosphäre. Forgotten Birds, das sind die Hamburger Jan Gazar-ra und Judy Willms. Sie trafen sich vor zwei Jahren bei einer Kunstausstellung und haben seitdem ihre Flügel immer weiter ausgebreitet. Ein Album, dessen Sound man wohl als Psychedelic Hippie Folk bezeichen könnte, ist in Arbeit. Live werden die beiden zum Quintett.

A very special treat awaits your eyes and ears on Saturday: a Forgotten Birds concert in an informal setting. Forgotten Birds - that’s Hamburg musicians Jan Gazarra and Judy Willms. They met at an art exhibition two years ago and have been spreading their musical wings wider and wider ever since. An album-whose sound could be described as Psychedelic-Hippie-Folk is in the works. Live, the two become a quintet.

Zur Finissage haut die Affenbande noch einmal kräftig auf die Pauke und prä-sentiert euch ein Schaufensterkonzert mit überraschendem Ende. Unplugged und live steht der Samstag ganz im Zeichen zweier Nachwuchsbands. Den Anfang machen um 19.30 Uhr die vier Musiker von Njord aus dem nördlichen Niedersachsen. In der stillen Schönheit und Unberührtheit des Hohen Moores liegen Inspiration und Ursprung ihrer akustischen Instrumentalmusik begrün-det. Treibende Rhythmen vermischen sich mit melancholischen Klängen und strahlen eine Echtheit aus, wie wir sie lange vermisst haben. Und anschließend, um 21.30 Uhr, bringt die fünfköpfige Rockband Victims Of Voodoo den Laden mit ihren schnellen Beats in Stimmung. Alternative, Indie und Psychedelic aus dem Herzen Ham-burgs, gepaart mit mehrstimmigen Ge-sängen und Gitarren, versprechen ein Hörvergnügen der besonderen Art.

Unplugged and live, Saturday night will be dedicated to two newcomer bands. Njord kicks things off at 19.30 the band’s four musicians hail from northern Lower Saxony and the in-spiration and origin of their acoustic ins-trumental music is rooted in the tranquil beauty and unspoiled nature of the Ho-hes Moor (raised bog). Driving rhythms blend with melancholy sounds, radiating a genuineness that’s truly refreshing. Then, at 21.30, the five-member rock band Victims of Voodoo will turn things up a notch with its fast-paced beats. Alternative, indie, and psychedelic from the heart of Hamburg, combined with harmonic vocals and guitars, promise listening pleasure of a very special sort.
