Just as Adam and Evenamed all the animals in the Book of Genesis andacknowledgedtheirstewardshipofourworld, soalsodo new parents proudly “own” their newresponsibilities! After asking that their offspring be baptized, the baptism ritual continues with another question.“In asking for baptism, you are accepting theresponsibility of training them in the practice of thefaith to keep God’s commandments as Christ hastaught us by loving God and our neighbors. Do youclearly understand what you are undertaking?” TheYESthatparentsspeakatthistimeisintheprocessofnow being ful$illed in our celebration of this year’sFirstCommunions. Asweallknow, time$lies!Inafewshortyears, ourFirstCommunicantswillbeteenagersandmakingtheir way toward the reception of the Sacrament ofCon$irmation. This third Sacrament of Initiationcompletestheprocesswherebyyoungadultsbecomefull$ledged members of the Body of Christ, theChurch. This year Con$irmationwill be celebrated inour community of Sunday afternoon May 20th ,PentecostSunday. Since the closeof theSecondVaticanCouncil, wehaveexperiencedenormouschangeinourCatholiccommunity. The black and white rigidity of theBaltimoreCatechism is no longer able to answer thecomplex questions of our day. Pope JohnPaul II andPope Francis have both made the mercy of God acornerstone of their ministries, pleasing many but

perplexing others. Scandals have rocked our Catholiccommunityworldwideandmorethanafewpeoplehavewanderedaway. In the midst of the rockiness and uncertaintiesthat get more attention than they deserve, thesacramental life of our Church continues to be thefoundation of our live as Catholics. Baptism, Eucharistand Con$irmation are encounterswith the livingChrist.Eucharist, especially, because we can receive it sofrequently, isarealkindoflifelinethatnourishesusandkeeps us close to Jesus. This is so important. Becausewhenallissaidanddone, ourfaithisallaboutJesus.Itisall about the love that Jesus has for us and thetransformingimpactofthelovethatweexperiencefromHim.Everythingelseissecondarytothis. OurprayerforallofourchildrenwhoaremakingFirst Communion this weekend and next is that theycontinue to deepen their relationship with Jesus, thatthey fall more deeply in love with Jesus and that theirFirst Communions are the beginning of thousands ofCommunionsthattheywillreceiveintheirlifetimes.MayGod bless all of our children, all of our parents andgrandparents, andaspecialthankstoourcatechistswhohavesharedtheirfaithwithourgirlsandboysand, withthe help of their parents, brought them to this specialtimeintheirlives!
