One bright spot in last weeks game

was the continued success of the

WASHINGTON REDSKINS WEEK SEVEN VS. CLEVELAND BROWNS4

BALANCED ATTACKThe Redskins have been equally efficient on the of-

fensive and defensive sides of the ball, ranking sev-enth and eighth in the league, respectively.

Washington is currently one of four NFL teams to rankin the top 10 in total offense and total defense. Coin-cidentally, all four of those teams reside in the NFCEast.

The Redskins and Giants are the only two teams inthe conference to place in the top five in both offenseand defense.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLEAfter becoming the first team in NFL history to play

its first five games without an offensive turnover, theRedskins registered three in last Sundays loss to theRams, including a fumble that was returned 75 yardsfor a touchdown.

Still, the Redskins have only four turnovers on theseason, which is the second-fewest in the league toMiamis two. Washington is the only team yet to havethrown an interception. The Redskins +4 turnover dif-ferential ranks tied for third in the NFL, behind Ten-nessee and Philadelphia, and second in the NFC.

As a team Washington has gone 309 pass attemptswithout an interception, dating back to last season.Campbell is currently on a streak of 201 consecutiveattempts without an interception, which is a franchiserecord.

Against Philadelphia on Oct. 5, Campbell surpassedJoe Theismanns previous record of 161, set in 1983.

DEFENSE SUCCEEDING AGAINST LEAGUES BESTIn their six games this season, the Redskins have

faced five of the NFLs top nine offensive units, includ-ing the top three in the league. The Washington de-fense, ranked eighth in the NFL, has held the Giants,Saints, Cardinals, Cowboys and Eagles all to their low-est yardage totals of the season.

Additionally, the Redskins defense held St. Louis tojust 200 total yards of offense in last weeks defeat.

Washington ranks 10th in the league in points al-lowed per game (19.5), although the Redskins threereturn touchdowns allowed are tied for a league highwith six other teams. Two of those returns came viathe punt, while one was from a fumble. The defenseitself has allowed only 96 points in the six games, or 16

points per contest.Additionally, Washingtons defense has only allowed

13 points in the fourth-quarter this season, an aver-age of less than 2.2 a game, the fourth-lowest total inthe NFL.

RUNNETH OVERWashingtons 152.3 rushing yards per game ranks

third in the NFL behind the New York Giants and At-lanta Falcons. Running back Clinton Portis leads theleague with 643 rushing yards and his six rushingtouchdowns are tied for second in the NFL.

Portis has found plenty of running room behind oneof the NFLs best offensive lines consisting of leftackle Chris Samuels, left guard Pete Kendall, centerCasey Rabach, right guard Randy Thomas and right

tackles Stephon Heyer and Jon Jansen. Providing further space has been the excellent lead blocking of fullback Mike Sellers.

Since Jansen was re-inserted into the starting lineupfor an injured Heyer three weeks ago against DallasWashington has rushed for an NFL-high 545 yards ovethis span, an average of 181.7 yards per game.

Two weeks ago, the Redskins racked up 203 yardson the ground against an Eagles defense that cameinto the game leading the league in rushing yards allowed at a paltry 53.8 yards per contest.

The unit gets stronger as the game goes on as theRedskins 243 rushing yards in the fourth-quarter arethe third-most in the league this season. Their 18

fourth-quarter rushing first downs are an NFL high.Portis has been a major factor in closing games forWashington this season as his 14 fourth-quarter rushing first downs is a league high and twice as many asany other runner in the NFC.

On the other side of the ledger, the Redskins rushdefense has faced offenses the last three weeks thaeach featured a Pro Bowl running back in Marion Bar-ber, Brian Westbrook and Steven Jackson. The triocombined for just 145 rushing yards and a 3.15-yardsper carry average.

The Redskins rush defense, which now ranks sixthin the league, has allowed just 349 rushing yards ovethe last five weeks, an average of only 69.8 yards pegame, the fourth-best mark in the league over thisspan.

REDSKINS ARE POSSESSIVEOn the season, the Redskins hold a 32:35-27:25 time

of possession advantage over their opponents. Thismargin ranks third in the league behind Baltimore andthe New York Giants.

During a four-game winning streak from weeks twofive, Washington held the ball for a combined 40:26longer than its opponents.

Last week in a loss to the Rams, Washington extended its streak to five consecutive games with atime of possession advantage. This is its longest streaksince 2001-02 when they ran off six games in a row

(from 12/09/01 vs. Arizona to 09/08/02 vs. Arizona)The longest streak in team history is 11 games in a row(last 10 games in 1983 and week one of 1984). Thesecond longest streak is seven games (last six games in1985 and week one in 1986).

THE BEASTLY EASTThe four members of the NFC East have combined

for a 15-8 record, the best among the NFLs eight di-visions, including a mark of 11-4 outside the division

The Redskins currently stand at 2-1 in the NFC Eastafter playing all three divisional rivals on the road in

the first five weeks of the season. It is the earliestWashington has ever completed its divisional roadschedule.

Since the NFL adopted four four-team divisions in2002, the Redskins have started the season 2-1 in theNFC East only one other time (2005).

All four of the Redskins wins have come against fel-low NFC foes, a total which is tied with Tampa for the

    most in the conference.

SMITHS SWITCHWashingtons kickoff units, led by special teams

coach Danny Smith, have been among the leagues topgroups thus far in 2008. The Redskins kicking team hasallowed opponents an average starting field position ofthe 23.8-yard line, the second-best mark in theleague.

The Redskins return team has averaged a startingfield position of the 27-yard line, the seventh-best fig-ure in the NFC.

SOUTHERN BOY IN WEST COAST OFFENSE

In the final three weeks of September, quarterbackJason Campbell posted quarterback ratings of 108.4,112.2, and 104.1, the first time a Redskins quarter-back has had three-straight games with a passer rat-ing higher than 100.0 since Mark Rypien did it in games13-15 in 1991.

Campbell, a native of Taylorsville, Miss., is the onlyquarterback in the NFL with at least 20 pass attemptswho has yet to throw an interception. All other play-ers with 65 attempts have a least two interceptions. He is the ninth-rated passer in the league and third-most efficient passer in the fourth quarter.

    THE WORKHORSE

Clinton Portis leads the NFL with 136 carries and 643rushing yards, while his six rushing touchdowns aresecond in the league.

Portis has accounted for 35 first downs on theground this season, which also leads the NFL, as do his14 in the fourth quarter of games this season.

With a 145-yard and 129-yard performances againstthe Eagles and the Rams, Portis has two of the top 11single-game rushing totals in the NFL this year.

AIR AND GROUND DELIVERYWith Jason Campbell ranking eighth in passer rat-

ing, Clinton Portis ranking first in rushing yards andSantana Moss ranking eighth in receiving yards, theRedskins are one of three teams in the NFL, along withDallas and San Diego, to have a top-10 passer, rusherand receiver.

COOLEY CONTINUES STREAKWashington tight end Chris Cooley has caught a pass

in 62 straight regular season contests, dating back toweek nine of 2004. A Pro Bowl selection in 2007, Coo-ley ranks second among NFL tight ends in both catches(30) and receiving yards (345), behind only DallasJason Witten in both categories.

SPREADING THE WEALTHChris Cooley (30), Santana Moss (29) and Antwaan

Randle El (26) rank sixth, seventh and 14th, respectively, in the NFL is receptions. Moreover, the Redskinsand Arizona are the only teams to have three of thetop 25 pass-catchers in league.

    LONDON BRIDGING GAPS DURABLY

London Fletcher has started 125 consecutive gamesthe sixth-longest streak among active players. Thisseason, the Redskins middle linebacker is fourth inthe NFC with 48 tackles (according to NFL.com).

A CRISP START FOR CHRIS HORTONRookie safety Chris Horton has made a quick impac

just six games into his NFL career. Horton is tied fofourth in the NFL and second in the NFC with three interceptions.

The rookie was named the NFC Defensive Player ofthe Week following a week two win over New Orleanswhen he registered a two interceptions and a fumblerecovery in his first NFL start. He was also named NFL

Defensive Rookie of the Month for September.Last week against St. Louis, Horton was perhapsWashingtons best defensive player as he led the teamwith 12 tackles, including three for loss and manymore near the line of scrimmage, and a forced fumble

For the season, Horton is third on the team with 29tackles and has registered three interceptions, threepasses defensed, one fumble recovery, one forcedfumble and six special-teams tackles

ACceLerated RECOVERYThird-year linebacker Rocky McIntosh is second on

the club with 46 tackles and has also registered anNFC-high two forced fumbles. The two fumbles were

forced in the first quarter of Washington victories oveNew Orleans and Arizona and resulted in field goalsthat extended Redskins leads.

Cornerback Carlos Roger leads the club with 12passes defensed, including an interception.

Both McIntosh and Rogers are returning from tornanterior cruciate ligaments injuries that ended their2007 seasons and are major reasons for the Redskinsdefensive success in 2008.

Against Arizona, Rogers recovered an EdgerrinJames fumble caused by McIntosh, which set up aShaun Suisham field goal. In the second half, Rogersintercepted a Kurt Warner pass and returned it 42yards to the Arizona 15-yard line to set up the Redskins game-winning touchdown.

Over the last two contests, with fellow cornerbackShawn Springs battling a calf injury, Rogers has beencharged with checking seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Torry Holt and dynamic rookie DeSean Jacksonwho is seventh in the NFC with 433 receiving yardsCombined against Rogers and the Redskins, the pairaccounted for six catches for 31 yards. In fact, overthe last four games Rogers, Springs and the Redskinsdefense have limited Holt, Jackson, Terrell Owens andAnquan Boldin to a total of 16 catches for 127 yards.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS WEEK SEVEN VS. CLEVELAND BROWNS

CLEVELAND BROWNS HEAD COACH ROMEO CRENNEL

Romeo Crennel is entering his fourth season as ClevelandBrowns Head Coach and was rewarded with a two-year con-tract extension (thru 2011) on Jan. 29, 2008. Crennel led theBrowns to 10-6 record in 2007, including a franchise-best

seven consecutive home wins, and witnessed six Browns se-lected to the Pro Bowl. Crennels offense developed into ahighly productive unit and ranked eighth in the NFL in total of-fense (5,621 net yards) and scoring (402 points). The output ofnet yards and scoring also ranked third best in fran-chise history.

Crennel was named head coach of the ClevelandBrowns on Feb. 8, 2005, the 11th full-time headcoach in franchise history. Crennel returned to Cleve-land in 2005, after serving as the Browns defensivecoordinator in 2000, and along with Phil Savagehelped rebuild the football operations. Crennel pre-viously led the Browns to a respectable 6-10 recordin his first year as a head coach and added a 4-12mark in 2006. His resume includes 38 years of coach-

ing experience, including 27 years in the NFL.In 2005, Crennel brought a 3-4 defensive schemeto Cleveland and witnessed his defense T-16th in de-fense (316.8 ypg) and ranked fourth in the NFL inpass defense (179.2 ypg).

Prior to joining the Browns, Crennel was widely recognizedas one of the top assistant coaches in the NFL. He crafted thedefense for the New England Patriots and helped the Patriotswin three Super Bowls (2001, 2003-04). Crennels defenseplayed an integral role in the Patriots 24-21 win over thePhiladelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, as the defense forcedfour turnovers, put pressure on Eagles QB Donovan McNabbwith four sacks and limited the Eagles running game to 45 netyards rushing.

In the 2004 postseason, New England allowed only 51 points(17 points per game) in three postseason games, including a20-3 win over Indianapolis in an AFC Divisional Playoff game, a41-27 win at Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game andthe 24-21 win over Philadelphia in Super Bowl XXXIX. In NewEnglands AFC Divisional Playoff victory over Indianapolis, thePatriots did not allow the Colts in the end zone during their20-3 victory, marking the first time in NFL history that a teamled the league in scoring during the regular season and did notscore a touchdown in a playoff game.

During the 2004 regular season, the Patriots ranked ninth inthe NFL in total defense (310.8 ypg), sixth in run defense (98.3ypg) and 17th in pass defense (212.5 ypg). Crennels defensiveunit was tied for third in the NFL with 45 sacks, tied for sec-ond with 260 points allowed (16.3 ppg) on the year, allowednine rushing TDs on the season and ranked third in the AFC inred zone defense (40.8%). The defense recorded this feat

using 10 different starting lineups. In 2003, he was recognized by the Pro Football Writers ofAmerica as the NFLs Assistant Coach of the Year. The NewEngland defense was among the best units in NFL history, pro-pelling the Patriots to a 15-game winning streak that culmi-nated with a 32-29 victory over Carolina in Super Bowl XXXVIII.New England allowed a league-low and franchise-record 14.9points per game, while also leading the league with 29 inter-ceptions. The dominance of the defense was evident by theteams three shutouts, equaling the franchise shutout totalfrom the previous 17 seasons combined. The Patriots defensewas at its best at home, where it allowed only 9.6 points pergame and surrendered just four touchdowns in the regular

season. During one stretch, the Patriots did not allow a touch-down on 62 consecutive opponents possessions at home, astreak that spanned more than five games of clock time. NewEngland was the first team in 65 years to keep its opponent

out of the end zone in four consecutive home games in a sea-son. The Patriots defense provided some potent offense of itsown, leading the NFL with six defensive touchdowns, includingfive interceptions returned for scores, tying a team record.

Crennel returned to the New England Patriotswhen he was named the defensive coordinator onBill Belichicks staff on Feb. 1, 2001. In 2001, thedefense played an integral role in propelling thePatriots to a season-ending win streak to claim thefirst Super Bowl title for the franchise. The 2001Patriots surrendered just 272 points (17.0 ppg),ranking sixth in the league for fewest points al-lowed. In its last five regular season games, thedefense surrendered just seven field goals and onetouchdown. The Patriots won all five of those

games and qualified for the playoffs for the firsttime in three years.Crennel was reunited with Belichick in 2001 as

the two coaches began coaching together as assis-tants on Ray Perkins staff for the New York Giants in 1981.The 2004 season marked the 18th campaign for Crennel andBelichick together, during which time they have earned fiveSuper Bowl titles, six conference titles and eight division ti-tles. While with the Patriots, Crennel and Belichick have con-tributed to victories in Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX,in addition to New Englands AFC title in 1996.

The Patriots defense created opportunities for the offensein 2001 by recording 22 interceptions (second in the AFC, sixthin the NFL), 12 more than they had in 2000. Five of those in-terceptions were returned for touchdowns, setting a single-season franchise record. In the playoffs, DB Ty Law addedanother interception, which he returned 47 yards for a touch-down in the 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams in SuperBowl XXXVI.

Crennel, who was the defensive line coach for the Patriotsfrom 1993 to 1996, spent three seasons with the New York Jets(1997-99) and a season as the defensive coordinator with theCleveland Browns (2000). During his season in Cleveland, theBrowns recorded 42 sacks, a 17-sack improvement from the1999 season.

His first tenure in New England was a four-year assignmentas Bill Parcells defensive line coach, beginning in 1993 andending with an AFC Championship and Super Bowl XXXI ap-pearance in January of 1997. In 1994, the Patriots qualified forthe playoffs for the first time in eight years after winning theirlast seven games of the regular season. The defense allowed

just 13.3 points per game during that seven-game stretch. In1996, the Patriots defense allowed just 12.8 points per gamein the final five contests of the regular season to propel theteam back to the playoffs.

Crennel began his professional coaching career in 1981 as aspecial assignments/special teams/defensive assistant coachwith the New York Giants. He became the special teams coachin 1983 and was assigned the defensive line position in 1990, aposition he coached for 14 seasons. In 12 seasons in New York(1981-92), the Giants qualified for the playoffs six times, wonthree division titles and two Super Bowl championships. In hisfirst season in New York, the Giants qualified for the playoffsfor the first time since 1963.

    THE LAST TIME

    Redskins Fall in Cleveland, 17-13

    BY GARY FITZGERALDRedskins.com

On a game played on Oct. 3, 2004, the Redskins failedto hold on to a slim second-half lead, then were unable tomount a comeback, losing 17-13 to the Cleveland Brownsat Browns Stadium. It was the Redskins' third consecutiveloss.

Two turnovers were costly in the game. Clinton Portis'sthird-quarter fumble led to the Browns' first touchdown.Late in the fourth quarter, with the offense trying tomount a comeback, wide receiver Laveranues Coles fum-bled after a catch, ending the Redskins' final drive andlast chance to eke out a victory.

Both defenses were solid in the early going.

Washington scored first, taking advantage of a Cleve-land turnover. Midway through the first quarter, theBrowns were in Redskins' territory and driving for a score.Jeff Garcia completed a pass to wide receiver Quincy Mor-gan in the flat. Fred Smoot quickly stripped the ball fromMorgan's arms and the ball bounced backward, where An-tonio Pierce pounced on it for the recovery.

The Redskins took over and went on a 13-play, 65-yarddrive, with Mark Brunell leading the offense downfieldthanks to completions to Rod Gardner and Coles. But thedrive stalled at the Browns' 13-yard line and John Hallcame in to kick a 31-yard field goal.

The Browns responded with a drive of their own. Lee

Suggs burst for a 25-yard gain to get Cleveland in Redskins'territory. Then Matt Bowen was flagged for a roughing thepasser penalty, putting the Browns' in range for kicker PhilDawson. Dawson converted a 30-yard field goal to tie thegame at 3-3.

A few minutes before halftime, the Redskins jumpedback ahead with an impressive 12-play, 78-yard touch-down drive. On 4th and six from the Browns' 37-yard line,Washington elected to go for it instead of trying a longfield goal or punting. Brunell dropped back to pass, waited in the pocket, then found Coles streaking wideopen across the middle of the field. Coles shook off aBrowns' tackler and burst to the 7-yard line for a 30-yardpickup.

Two plays later, Portis pushed the ball across the goal

line for a 1-yard touchdown run and a 10-3 halftime lead.In the third quarter, the Browns tied the game by tak-

ing advantage of Portis's fumble. It occurred on the Red-skins' first offensive series of the second half. Portis was

tackled into a pile of defenders by Browns' defensive line-man Mike Myers. The ball popped loose and it was recov-ered by Andra Davis.

The Redskins challenged the fumble, contending thatPortis was down by contact, but the ruling was upheld, costing Washington a time out.

The Browns began the drive on the Redskins' 31-yardline. Garcia completed passes to tight end Steve Heidenand fullback Terrelle Smith, then found tight end AaronShea wide open in the right flat. Shea raced 15 yards intothe end zone before a Redskins defender was able toreach him.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Redskins took the lead

again on a 26-yard field goal by Hall. The score was set upby a 45-yard pass from Brunell to Coles and culminated a9-play, 80-yard drive.

Holding on to a slim 13-10 lead, Washington's defenserose up and forced a three-and-out. But the offense wasunable to generate any first downs to wind down theclock and the Redskins were forced to punt.

Cleveland put together a solid drive, with strong run-ning by Suggs and a 23-yard pass from Garcia to wide re-ceiver Andre Davis that put the Browns at the Redskins'3-yard line. Suggs burst across the goal line for a touch-down on the next play for the 17-13 advantage.

The Redskins' offense had one last opportunity to drivedownfield for a go-ahead score. But the drive was stoppeddue to Coles' fumble and Browns QB Garcia had only tokneel three times to run out the clock.

Despite the fumble, Coles produced a solid game, fin-ishing with seven catches for 122 yards. Brunell was 17-of32 passes for 192 yards and Portis logged 58 yards on 20carries. The offensive line did not yield a sack.

But the offense was unable to sustain many drives, going 1-for-11 on third-down conversions.

On defense, Pierce led the way with eight tackles andsafety Sean Taylor had seven tackles. Backup defensivelinemen Ron Warner and Demetric Evans, playing for in-jured starter Phillip Daniels, were also solid, each record-ing a sack.

Those statistics were ultimately undone by theturnovers.

    LONDON CALLING

Redskins linebacker London Fletcher earned the nick-name Bam Bam as a child because of his fondness forthe Flintstones cartoon and his propensity to ransack hishome. In like manner, Fletcher has terrorized opponents

over the last 11 seasons as one of the NFLs most consis-tent and productive defensive players. Fletcher has con-tinued that level of play this season as leads the Redskinsand is fourth in the NFC in tackles. Also, Fletcher has nowopened 125 straight league contests, a figure which rankssixth among active players.

Last season, his first in the nations capital, the 5-foot-10, 245-pound Fletcher was named a first-alternate tothe Pro Bowl after starting all 17 of the teams games andleading the Redskins with 164 tackles.

Last year also marked the ninth straight in which herecorded at least 100 tackles, dating back to 1999 whenhe was in his second season with the St. Louis Rams. Thatstreak is topped only by Tampa Bays Derrick Brooks andKansas Citys Donnie Edwards, who have reached theplateau in 12 consecutive campaigns.

Fletcher anchored the Rams defense from his middlelinebacker spot in 1999, leading the team in tackles with138. While St. Louis offense received much of the atten-tion on the teams way to winning Super Bowl XXXIV, thedefense ranked sixth in the league overall and firstagainst the run. Fletcher is one of three current Redskinsplayers to have been a part of a Super Bowl winner.

Fletcher enjoyed four seasons in St. Louis, leading theRams in tackles from 1999-2001, before joining Buffalofrom 2002-06. He led the Bills in tackles all five seasonsand continued that streak last year in Washington.

Among active players Fletcher ranks fifth with 1,599career tackles behind Derrick Brooks, Ray Lewis, ZachThomas and Donnie Edwards. In fact, since the start of

this decade, no player has amassed more tackles thanFletcher.

It took just one practice for LaRon Landry to make animmediate impression on Pro Football Hall of Fame HeadCoach John Madden.

Just two days prior to the Redskins preseason finale

against Jacksonville, Landry - who missed the previousfour preseason games with a left hamstring strain - prac-ticed for the first time in more than month. The second-year safety did not miss a step exhibiting his trademarkball-hawking ability and outstanding range that day inpractice as Madden proclaimed him to be the fastestplayer on the field.

As a rookie in 2007, Landry recorded 97 tackles, 1.5sacks and one fumble recovery en route to being namedto the NFL All-Rookie Defensive Team. He became thefirst Redskins rookie defensive player to start all 16 regu-lar season games since Champ Bailey did so in 1999 andconcluded his first National Football League campaignwith two interceptions in the playoff contest at Seattle

last January.Recognized as one of the rising stars in the National

Football League, Landry compiled seven tackles, one passdefensed and a half-sack in the regular season openeragainst the New York Giants. His performance promptedMadden, who was broadcasting the game for NBC in frontof a nationally-televised audience, to laud the Redskinstop pick (sixth overall) in the 2007 NFL Draft:

This guy is going to be a superstar in this leagueandbefore it is all over he is going to be a very specialplayer.

In the Redskins home opener in week two, Landryfaced his childhood team the New Orleans Saints andled the Redskins to a 29-24 win with four tackles and twopasses defensed, including a touchdown-saving deflectionof a Drew Brees attempt to Devery Henderson in thefourth quarter.

In last weeks game against St. Louis, Landry recordedfour tackles, three passes defensed and a fumble recov-ery.

Landry, whose brother Dawan is a safety for the Balti-more Ravens, followed that up with seven tackles and apass defensed in the Redskins week three win over theArizona Cardinals.

It is safe to say that the 23-year-old Landrys transitionfrom from strong safety to free safety this season hasgone smoothly.

    TAYLOR MADE ADDITION

The Redskins traded with the Miami Dolphins for six-time Pro Bowl linebacker/defensive end Jason Taylor onJuly 20, 2008, bringing one of the NFLs most feared de-fenders to Washington. Taylor joins Andre Carter to formone of the most dangerous pass-rushing tandems in theleague. Taylor and Carter are one of two sets of currentNFL teammates who both registered double-digit sack to-tals in 2007. Dallas DeMarcus Ware and Greg Ellis is theother.

Before missing a game at the Dallas Cowboys on Sept.28, following a necessary medical procedure on his leftcalf to remove blood and avoid possible nerve damage onSept. 22, Taylor had opened 133 consecutive games, dat-ing back to 1999, which was the seventh-longest streakamong active players.

The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Taylor has been one of the Na-tional Football Leagues premier defensive players for the

past 11+ seasons. The Pittsburgh native has been selectedto six Pro Bowls (2000, 2002, 2004-07), including the lastfour in a row. He recorded his first sack as a Redskin onSept. 14 against the Saints, the 118th of his career, whichis the most among all active NFL players and ranks 14thall-time in NFL history.

Additionally, Taylors 101.5 sacks this decade are aleague high, 12.5 more than Michael Strahans 89, and 24more than any other active player (Leonard Little, 77.5).Taylor also has demonstrated a propensity for getting hishands on the football as his 41 forced fumbles are eightmore than any other current NFL player (Dwight Freeney

33). He has also recovered 26 fumbles, five of which hereturned for touchdowns, tied for the most in NFL history, while his eight career touchdowns are the most by an NFLdefensive lineman since the 1970 merger.

Originally a third-round draft choice out of the Univer-sity of Akron in 1997, Taylor was named the 2006 Associ-ated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year and the 2007Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

In 2007, Taylor recorded 11 sacks, his sixth season withdouble-digit sacks. He also logged four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and an interception, which he re-turned 36 yards for a touchdown. In 2006, when Taylorwas recognized as the leagues best defender, he notched62 tackles, 13.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, 10 forced fum

bles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions, bothof which he returned for touchdowns.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS WEEK SEVEN VS. CLEVELAND BROWNS14

Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell iscontinuing his progression under Head Coach Jim Zorn, while learning of the nuisances of the West Coast Of-fense.

Overall for the season, Campbell has completed 115-of-179 pass attempts (64.2%) for 1,262 yards and sixtouchdowns and no interceptions for a passer rating of96.2. He is the only quarterback with at least twentypassing attempts to have not thrown an interception.Campbell has now gone 201 pass attempts without an in-terception, which broke Joe Theismanns team record of161 straight attempts without an interception set in1983. In fact, Campbell has zero turnovers in 2008, whileevery other NFL player who has attempted 65 passes hasthrown at least two interceptions.

Campbell ranks eighth among NFL quarterbacks with a96.2 passer rating, ninth with 115 completions and 12thwith 1,262 passing yards.

A true test of a quarterback comes in the fourth quar-ter, and this has been when Campbell has been at hisbest. Campbell has displayed poise, accuracy and theability to make the big play in the final stanza. He rankssecond in the NFC and fifth in the NFL in fourth quarterpassing efficiency as he has completed 31-of-44 passes(70.5%) for 426 yards and two touchdowns and no inter-ceptions for a passer rating of 116.3 rating. He hasguided the Redskins to 44 fourth-quarter points, theeight-highest total in the NFL.

His teammates are feeding off his energy: Jason hasbeen excellent, said Redskins wide receiver SantanaMoss. I am loving the way we are throwing the ballaround and Jason is making the most of his opportunities. He is really thriving and making some exceptionalthrows.

    JASON CAMPBELL GATHER NO MOSS

With 29 catches for 448 yards and three touchdownsthrough six contests, Redskins wide receiver SantanaMoss is off to one of the fastest starts of his eight-yearNFL career, surpassed only by the 38 catches for 743

yards and five touchdowns he amassed in 2005 when hewent on the Pro Bowl.

Moss is tied for eighth in the NFL with 448 receivingyards and is fourth among NFC wide receivers with 448receiving yards. His three touchdown catches are tied for10th in the NFL and sixth in the NFC.

With a touchdown in the first three weeks of the sea-son, Moss extended a streak dating back to last season ofcatching a scoring pass in six consecutive games, includ-ing playoffs. It tied a Redskins record held by Hall ofFamer Bobby Mitchell, who did it in 1964, and is the sec-ond-longest streak of Mosss career behind the sevenstraight games he did it from Oct. 12-Nov. 23, 2003. Histouchdown receptions in weeks two and three against

New Orleans and Arizona, each came in the fourth quar-ter and proved to be the deciding margin in both Red-skins victories.

Linebacker/defensive end Jason Taylor returned to ac-tion last week after missing the previous two games afterundergoing a necessary medical procedure on his left calfon Sept. 22 to remove blood and avoid possible nerve dam-age.

Cornerback Shawn Springs (left calf strain) and line-

backer Marcus Washington (left hamstring strain) also re-turned after missed the previous week.Tackle Stephon Heyer has been battling a sprained

left shoulder and was inactive for the last two contests.Rookie wide receiver Malcolm Kelly (left knee) and

and safety Reed Doughty (back) also missed the Ramsgame last week.

Running back Ladell Betts injured his left knee againstthe Rams and is expected to miss this weeks contest. Also against St. Louis, safety Chris Horton suffered a leftankle sprain, tackle Chris Samuels suffered a right leg in-jury, cornerback Fred Smoot strained his groin and widereceiver James Thrash sprained his right knee.
