ROOT-CAUSE ANALYSIS VISUALLY DEPICTED

For example, consider the event of a network router port status transitioning from UP toDOWN. If a port model receives a LINK DOWN trap, it can perform a status query todetermine if the port is actually down. If the DOWN status is confirmed, the port modelconsults the broader system of models to see if the port has lower layer sub-interfaces. If itdoes and one of them is down, CA SPECTRUM will only generate an alarm for the lower layerport, eliminating time consuming and unnecessary manual investigation.

Root-cause and impact are determined through the CA SPECTRUM software’s ability to bothlisten and talk to the infrastructure. Models are in direct communication with their real-worldcounterparts, enabling CA SPECTRUM to proactively query for health status or additionaldiagnostic information.

The CA SPECTRUM Network Fault Manager Service Manager(CA SPECTRUM NFM Service Manager) module conveys the status of critical network servicesin a non-technical manner, easily accessible to all relevant stakeholders. Information on thestatus of services can be organized by service, department (for internal customers), orcustomer (for service level management communication to external customers).

NETWORK SERVICE DASHBOARD

The CA SPECTRUM NFM Service Manager module was designed with large, dynamic networkenvironments in mind, and includes a variety of flexible configuration options that improve yourability to apply management policies and automate the ongoing maintenance of those policies.Service and SLA templates aid up-front configuration and ease the burden of frequent adds,moves and changes. A change to a template can be globally applied to all services createdfrom that template. By understanding the relationships between components, services and events that affect aservice, the CA SPECTRUM NFM Service Manager module is able to pinpoint the root-cause ofservice problems for faster resolution. A powerful event correlation engine correlates eventsacross technology domains, such as network, systems and applications, to detect the root-cause of problems — even in cases where the root-cause is not directly monitored by CASPECTRUM or was not part of the service definition.

The CA SPECTRUM NFM Service Manager module conducts impact analysis on all faults thataffect a service — including performance, response time, network device outages andapplication problems — and shows exactly which services, SLAs and customers are affected byeach fault. Actionable information enables you to address issues in a prioritized manner, andresolve them quickly.

The CA SPECTRUM NFM Service Manager module also includes a service dashboard whichprovides role-appropriate information to executives, business managers, call center operatorsand customers, allowing them to view information relevant to their specific needs. An integralpart of the CA SPECTRUM OneClick interface, the dashboard provides at-a-glance informationabout services, customers and SLAs, as well as fault metrics such as mean-time-between-failures (MTBF), mean-time-to-repair (MTTR), time since last outage, etc. When a service orcustomer is in a problem state, the dashboard shows the assigned troubleshooter, duration ofoutage, affected users and other details. The service dashboard also provides direct links todetailed historical reports.

The CA SPECTRUM NFM Service Manager module also delivers active SLA monitoring,generating real-time alarms to warn of service outages and impending SLA violations. Thealarms include root-cause information so you can address problems before your business isimpacted. Additionally, the CA SPECTRUM NFM Service Manager module provides historicalreports, enabling you to continuously improve services.

Verifying Performance through Comprehensive ReportingHistorical SLA reports are a major component of the CA SPECTRUM software’s servicemanagement capabilities, complementing the service and SLA modeling process and verifyingthe performance of service components over a variety of time periods. These SLA reports canbe categorized into two groupings: customer-facing reports, which provide SLA statusinformation; and internal reports, which provide a rich set of detailed data for service providersand/or enterprises.

Customer-facing SLA reports include:

• SLA Detail by Customer that shows which SLA guarantees are compliant or violated withina given period.

• SLA Inventory by Customer that lets customers compare actual service configurations withthe specifications in the SLA document.

• SLA Summary Warned or Violated that produces a table of all SLAs currently in the warnedor violated state, along with access to a sub-report showing detailed guarantee outageinformation for the current period.

• SLA Detail by Name, Time Range, Last N Periods that displays all SLA status values —including unaffected, compliant, warned and violated states — and offers more detailedinformation in a sub-report.

• SLA Detail with Resource Outages that brings together SLA status and the associatedresource outages that ultimately impacted the SLA in a given period, and reveals the impactof a particular resource at a very high level.

• Customer SLA Summary that shows SLA status during the last six periods for allcustomers’ SLAs.

Core Functionality Included with All PackagesATM MANAGEMENT The ATM Circuit Manager delivers precise monitoring and performancethresholding of ATM throughput with detailed information on bandwidth utilization and circuitcongestion. Root-cause analysis and fault isolation is provided per VPL/VCL with impactanalysis to prioritize response and corrective action. Intelligent AutoDiscovery techniquesleverage remote IP address information and traffic statistics to map VPI/VCI connectivity andpresent an integrated topology view. In addition a list of PVPs and PVCs can be imported fromexternal data stores to accurately model all ATM WAN links.

POLICY-BASED ALARM FORWARDING AND NOTIFICATION The Alarm Notification Managerenables policy-based alarm forwarding to alarm processing applications such as Alarm Notifierand CA’s Service Desk, as well as BMC’s Remedy ARS and Attention NS!. These alarmprocessing applications respond in various ways (email, pager, cell phone, trouble tickets, etc.)to alarms generated by the CA SPECTRUM Network Fault Management solution. A PolicyAdministrator UI enables you to specify and associate alarm notification policies with thesealarm processing applications. A policy enables you to specify the types of alarms you want toreceive and to filter out the alarms that you consider unimportant. The point-and-click userinterface can also control alarm behavior based on time, day, week or monthly schedulingparameters. The Alarm Notification Manager facilitates lights-out operation where specific ITstaff members, based on their working hours, can be notified of problems wherever they are,and have root-cause information at their fingertips.

FRAME RELAY MANAGEMENT Frame Relay is an economical and efficient method of connectingremote offices and/or retail locations to corporate headquarters. As the Frame Relay marketcontinues to mature, so too does the requirement for SLA validation and real-time fault andperformance management. Network Frame Relay Manager delivers precise monitoring andperformance thresholding of Frame Relay committed information rates (CIR), with detailedinformation on bandwidth utilization and circuit congestion. Root-cause analysis and faultisolation is provided per DLCI, with impact analysis to prioritize response and corrective action.Intelligent AutoDiscovery techniques leverage remote IP address information and trafficstatistics to map DLCI connectivity and present an integrated topology view. Several largeenterprises have used Network Frame Relay Manager to document SLA violations with theirservice providers.

CUSTOM THRESHOLDING The Watch Editor provides a simple way of monitoring keyperformance indicators across the network infrastructure. By enabling additional polling andthresholding, it can automate notification, and launch scripts when thresholds are violated orabnormal behaviors occur. Watches can monitor statistics, complex calculations, values thatshould remain static and/or MIB attributes. What’s more, the result of a watch can be used totrigger other actions, such a running a script to initiate a task. Watches can be configured toanalyze a single device, a specific device type or all devices without requiring one-by-onemanual intervention. The Watch Editor solution can be leveraged to monitor CPU, memory,storage and bandwidth utilization across multiple vendors and technologies. It all adds up to acost-effective and sustainable way to intelligently watch thresholds and identify networkproblems without requiring complex programming techniques.

DISTRIBUTED NETWORK MANAGEMENT AND FAULT TOLERANCE Today’s large, geographicallydispersed businesses require management software that is highly scalable, flexible in itsdistributed architecture, and fault tolerant. Whether the need for distributing the managementworkload is driven by localized polling, local administration, user community location, and/orother factors, leveraging distributed SpectroSERVER (DSS) capabilities offer the power andflexibility to address those needs.

DSS effectively distributes the management traffic load and allows you to delegate networkmanagement functions to remote workstations, using a common interface and integratedapplications. Also, each management server can be geographically closer to the devices itmanages; reducing traffic on wide area links and avoiding congestion on the local network.

A major advantage of using this DSS approach is the ability to set up redundancy betweenmanagement servers, creating a fault tolerant environment. A secondary SpectroSERVER canbe provided as a redundant backup or standby, so that network management would continueeven if the workstation running the primary SpectroSERVER fails. When a failure occurs thatdisables the primary SpectroSERVER, the secondary automatically takes its place, andSPECTRUM applications automatically use the redundant SpectroSERVER.

DSS is supported with the Standard and Premium Suites only. Fault Tolerance is included with theStandard and Premium Suites, but is also available as an add-on option to the Foundation Suite.

• CA SPECTRUM® Network Fault Manager Report Manager This module is a particularlycritical component of service management, taking the data collected by CA SPECTRUM —including availability, response time, asset and service quality metrics — and communicatingit in the form of actionable historical information. Delivered via the web or through a varietyof formats, the reports help you control costs through proactive management and accurateasset inventories.

• CA SPECTRUM® Network Fault Manager Service Manager This module provides real-timeand historical management of your business processes, SLAs and customers. The result ishorizontal, cross-silo management aligned with business process reliability. • CA SPECTRUM® Network Fault Manager SNMPV3 Module SNMPv3 module supportensures secure management communications for SNMPv3 requests and responses.SNMPv3 technology supports secure communication with infrastructure components. Youcan leverage the full range of SNMPv3 authentication and encryption capabilities to securemanagement traffic and ensure safe configuration and control of IT infrastructurecomponents.
