PLEASE WEAR YOUR FACE MASK at all times, removing it only to receive Holy Communion. Remember, "Wearing a mask is not just about you; it's also about your neighbor." PLEASE RESPECT the prayerful atmosphere of this holy place. We ask you to turn off all cell phones and electronic devices. Thank you! DID YOU FORGET your offering envelope? Extra envelopes are located in the tract rack of each narthex. LISTENING DEVICES are available for those who need assistance in hearing the service. Please speak to the Elder on duty (main narthex) if you need one. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS WITH HYMNS are available in the main narthex. HOLY COMMUNION will be celebrated at all services this weekend in continuous style. All communicants should sign the Communion registration side of an attendance card. A common participation in the Altar of Christ assumes a common unity of faith and doctrine. We therefore ask that all guests who are not in fellowship with the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod contact one of the pastors prior to the Divine Service before presenting themselves at the Altar for the Holy Communion. Thank you! THE PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: We look to You for help and healing, O Lord. Be with all those who are in need at this time. Lift them up and restore them so that they may continue to serve You wholeheartedly. In Your name we pray. Amen.

THE PREPARATION THE HYMN: 868 – “Awake, My Soul, and with the Sun” – Stanzas 1-4

Tune and text: Public domain

(Please stand for the last stanza) THE INVOCATION, CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION P (Pastor): In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. C (Congregation): Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination) P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in

Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

THE SERVICE OF THE WORD

THE SALUTATION (Spoken) P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. THE COLLECT OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. All: O Lord, keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your mighty power; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated) THE OLD TESTAMENT READING: Isaiah 40:21-31 P: The Old Testament Reading for the 5th Sunday after the Epiphany is from the 40th chapter of Isaiah. 21Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; 23who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. 24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows on them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble.

5

25To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing. 27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (ESV) P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL (Spoken) P: Praise the LORD, all nations! C: Extol him, all peoples! P: For great is his steadfast love toward us, C: and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. P: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; C: bring an offering, and come into his courts! (ESV)

THE EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 9:16-27 P: The Epistle is from the 9th chapter of 1st Corinthians. 16If I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. 18What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. 19For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (ESV) P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand) THE VERSE (Spoken) All: Alleluia. [Jesus] went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. Alleluia. THE HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 1:29-39 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 1st chapter. C: (Spoken) Glory to You, O Lord. 29Immediately [Jesus] left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31And he came and

7

took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. 33And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” 39And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. (ESV)

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: (Spoken) Praise to You, O Christ. THE NICENE CREED All: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose Kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one Holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THE SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT THE COMMUNION COLLECT P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sins and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew and strengthen us with your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His Kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER (Spoken) P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us

this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My X body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My X blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” THE PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. THE AGNUS DEI (Sung; LSB, p. 163) All: Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace. (Please be seated) THE DISTRIBUTION AND THE DISTRIBUTION HYMNS A Prayer before receiving the Sacrament Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. A Prayer after receiving the Sacrament Almighty and everlasting God, I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the Holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal, through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.

THE HYMN: 690 – “Hope of the World” – (Tune LW 377)

1 Hope of the world, Thou Christ of great compassion; Speak to our fearful hearts by conflict rent. Save us, Thy people, from consuming passion, Who by our own false hopes and aims are spent.

2 Hope of the world, God’s gift from highest heaven,

Bringing to hungry souls the bread of life, Still let Thy Spirit unto us be given To heal earth’s wounds and end our bitter strife.

3 Hope of the world, afoot on dusty highways,

Showing to wand’ring souls the path of light, Walk Thou beside us lest the tempting byways Lure us away from Thee to endless night.

4 Hope of the world, who by Thy cross didst save us

From death and dark despair, from sin and guilt, We render back the love Thy mercy gave us; Take Thou our lives and use them as Thou wilt.

5 Hope of the world, O Christ, o’er death victorious,

Who by this sign didst conquer grief and pain, We would be faithful to Thy Gospel glorious. Thou art our Lord! Thou dost forever reign!

< NEWS & NOTES >

THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

The Son of God, Christ Jesus, Makes Us a New Creation The Lord alone “is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth” (Is. 40:28). He “sits above the circle of the earth” and “stretches out the heavens like a curtain” (Is. 40:22). Yet, His almighty power is demonstrated chiefly by His mercy and compassion. “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength” (Is. 40:29). The only begotten Son of the Father, the very Word by whom all things were made, becomes flesh and takes all the poverty and weakness of our sin and death upon Himself, bearing it in His body to the cross. As He dies for us there, He also raises us up, a new creation, in His resurrection from the dead. Thus, by the preaching of this Word, He heals “many who were sick with various diseases,” and He casts out “many demons” (Mark 1:34, 39). And His preaching continues through those whom He has sent, who are “entrusted with a stewardship” to “preach the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16–17). Thus, we are set free by the Word of Christ, and we exercise our freedom in loving service to others. THE CHANCEL FLOWERS today are given to the glory of God by:

The Blessing Box

Reach Out and Help the Community!

Redeemer’s Board for Outreach has the Blessing Box

up and running now! The goal of this Blessing Box is to reach out to those in our community who have need of food for one reason or another. Anyone in our congregation that wishes to donate can put items in the box, and they may also take items out if they have need. If you would like to donate items on a Sunday, please put your items in the box before you enter church. If the Blessing Box is full, we will have a container in the narthex coatroom where you can leave your items. You may also place items in the Blessing Box at any other time that is convenient for you. With winter upon us we are asking for nonperishable items such as cereal, beans, rice, Ramen noodles, pasta, mac and cheese, bread, flour, etc. Hygiene items such as Kleenex, toilet paper, or bar soap are also accepted. At this time we’d like to stay away from canned good items or liquids because they might freeze. The Board for Outreach does not want to take away from the food pantry box in the narthex so please consider donating to both. We thank the church for their continued support on this project.

Preschool – Grade 5 Lesson 5 – February 7 “The Downfall Wall” is the title of this week’s lesson. Confident in their wall, the people of Jericho shut themselves up inside the city. Following God’s unusual battle plan, Joshua gathers the priests, trumpets, ark of the covenant, and people. Six days they march once around the city, then seven times on the seventh day, giving a shout at the conclusion of the last circuit. The city walls come tumbling down, and the Israelites wipe out the citizens and livestock while plundering precious metals for the tabernacle. Yet Rahab and her family are spared. Lesson 6 – February 14 The account of Deborah serves as today’s lesson, “The Palm-Tree Judge.” Judge Deborah urges Barak to gather 10,000 troops to go up against Sisera’s army of 900 iron chariots. When the battle turns against Sisera, he flees on foot, seeking refuge in Jael’s tent. Snoozing beneath a rug, Sisera meets his end at the hand of Jael as she pegs him through his temple to the ground.
