Kid Nation: When did you start playing baseball?

Darnell McDonald: I started playing baseball assoon as I could pick up a bat: those big red batswith the whiffle balls we used to swing all thetime. My father used to throw to us. I started play-ing organized baseball when I played t-ball withmy brother. He was actually four years older than

me, but I was able to play on his team.

KN: When you were growing up, who was yourfavorite team and player?

DM: My favorite team was probably the NewYork Mets and [my] favorite players were DarrylStrawberry and Ozzie Smith.

KN: In your childhood was there any competitionbetween you and your cousin James McDonald whonow pitches in the MLB?

ON APRIL 20TH, 2010, the Red Sox were down four to six in the bottom of the eighth. With Jason Varitek on second base, Sox manager Terry Francona called on newcomerDarnell McDonald. McDonald was brought up from the minor league Pawtucket teamafter Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury suffered injuries which landed them on the dis-abled list. “Who is he?” many fans questioned, but their doubts were silenced when herocketed a homerun over the Green Monster, tying the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the score still tied six to six, Darnell came up to batagain, with the bases loaded and two outs. The tension built as he took a called strike. He came through again, however, in dramatic fashion, with a shot over the outfielder’shead to drive in Kevin Youkilis.

Darnell became the 9th Red Sox player to hit a homerun in his first time at bat and wasonly the third person ever to pinch hit for the Red Sox and have his first hit be a home-run. He also became the first ever member of the Red Sox to collect a game-ending RBIin his debut with the club. Red Sox Kid Nation got a chance to catch up with him andask a few questions.

DM: No, there was never any competition. We both wanted each other to excel and dowell. Last year I was on deck; I was goingto get a chance to bat against him, but for-tunately for him the guy ahead of memade the last out so I didn’t get a chanceto face him. I told him that he would bescared and wouldn’t have thrown me anyfastballs.

KN: Did you play any other sports in highschool?

DM: I played football and basketball fortwo years.

KN: Why did you decide to not go to collegeand go straight to the minor leagues?

DM: At the time, the team that drafted meoffered me a lot of money to play baseball, and it was an opportunity to take care ofmy family. If someone had the same deci-sion to make that I had I would definite-ly say go to school and have time togrow up and mature and get an edu-cation. But I don’t regret the decision thatI made.

KN: How did your family respond to yourdecision?

DM: They were happy for me. They werealways very supportive, and they alsohelped me to make the decision. Like I said,I am happy I made the decision. I enjoybeing here and playing for the Red Sox.

KN: So how do you like Boston?

DM: I love it. Chicago used to be myfavorite city but now Boston has takenover as my favorite. I went on the DuckTour the other day and [really had fun].

KN: What else do you like about Boston?

DM: The restaurants and the shopping, butI just like that people get outside and walkaround and enjoy the summer and a lot ofthe sights and the water. I like to get outand walk around with my family.

KN: What do you like to do besides play base-ball?

DM: I like to read a lot of books and fish. Ihave two kids, [one is] five and [the other]four months, so I spend a lot of time withthem and just relax.

KN: What is it like being a father in theMLB?

DM: I think it’s the best thing that everhappened for me and my career. It helpedme put the game in perspective. This isa game and I go home and I am adad, no matter if I went 0-4 or 4-4.I love it.

KN: What was your experience in the minorleagues like?

DM: It had its ups and downs, the goodtimes and bad times. It’s good because youget a chance to meet a lot of people, a lotof different teammates. I was able to estab-lish a lot of relationships with guys that Italk to still, to this day. It could get lonely, you travel a lot, a lot of long bus rides, soyou’re away from your family, which istough. It made this experience that muchmore rewarding, to be able to come and

Have you noticed anything new at Fenway Park? I don’tjust mean the new players the Red Sox acquired, likeDarnell McDonald and Adrian Beltre. You probably haven’tseen the new thermal solar panels on the roof, but you mayhave seen volunteers wearing Poland Spring tee shirts walk-ing through the stands collecting recyclables during thegames or dropped your soda can into one of the 100 recy-cling bins placed throughout the park. In 2008, theBoston Red Sox began a five year greening initia-tive that sparked many actions to reduce Fenway’s negativeimpacts on the earth. According to Kathleen Harrington,Red Sox Coordinator of Ball Park Planning andDevelopment, “Our goal is to make Fenway Park as greenas possible.”

Although there are several other ballparks that havelaunched similar missions, such as Citi Field and Nationals’Park, there are three things that make the greening ofFenway special: “The Red Sox are the first team to installsolar thermal panels, launch a Green Team, and partnerwith the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC),”Harrington stated. The NRDC is a nationally known envi-ronmental organization.

One of the most impressive achievements is therecently installed 28 solar panels that help to heatwater for Fenway. The panels will replace 37% of the gastraditionally used for heating water, and will avoid approxi-mately 18 tons of CO2 emissions. New plumbing fixtureswere installed in the 2007-2008 off-season as well, whichwill save more than 360,000 gallons of water annually.

Eleven “big belly” trash barrels were installed around thepark. They have solar panels on top which collect power tocompact the trash, so they can hold six times the amount of

trash normal barrels can. Thisreduces the number of pickupsthat commercial garbage truckshave to make to Fenway.

In addition to this, volunteermembers of the Poland Springsponsored Green Team walkthrough the stands during homegames collecting cans and plasticbottles. “We make severalannouncements to remind fans torecycle. In 2009, [between the

Green Team and the bins] we collected 64 tons of recy-clables,” says Harrington.

And that’s not all. The ground crew also compost all thegrass clippings and use organic fertilizers to grow the grass.Fryer oil from some concession stands is used to create bio-diesel, which powers the vehicles that maintain the playingfield. Fenway nowboasts some con-cessions standsthat serve snacksmade with organicproducts. In addi-tion, many ofthe lights at thepark are com-pact fluorescentlight bulbs, which use 75%less energy thannormal bulbsand last tentimes longer.

The fans have been a big help in the greening of Fenway, strongly supporting the ball club’s actions, but there are afew other ways Boston fans can chip in with the Red Sox tomake this world a better place. According to Harrington,“Fans can stop and think about how different things we doaffect the earth. There are everyday things that matter:compost, recycle, turn off the television and other electron-ic devices when they are not being used, choose environ-mentally friendly cleaning products and eat locally grownfoods when possible.”

This is a great way to connect with all you kids and also a way to let you know how to connectwith me, whether at Fenway Park or at events in your community, ranging from your LittleLeague events to reading assemblies at your school! I get a lot of questions in my emailinbox ([email protected]) asking “Wally, we were at the game but had a hard time findingyou. How can I make sure we get a chance to meet you next time we come to Fenway?” Well, you can always see me driving my ATV out onto the field right before pre-game ceremonies. When you are at Fenway you can meet me at Wally’s World on Yawkey Way during the 3rd &4th innings. That’s right, I have my own World now at Fenway. Stop by for a photo or an auto-graph, play some carnival games or maybe just come to give a “high five” to this lovablemonster! You can also have me stop by your seats during the game! All you have to do ishave Mom or Dad email me or call 617-226-6040!

One of my favorite parts of the game is the 7th inning stretch. Every game I have one of myfriends select three kids just like you from the crowd to come on the dugout with me tostretch and sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” At the end of the song we even throw outpeanuts and cracker jacks off of the dugout. So next time you are at Fenway you might getthe chance to “stretch” with me! Not able to make it to the ballpark? Maybe you will see meout on some of the many appearances I do. You can always find me at birthday parties, oreven maybe at your school doing a “Read with Wally” assembly!

That is it for now from my desk here inside the Green Monster. I hope to see you soon!

Until Next Time……

Go Sox!

play in the big leagues with the Red Sox.

KN: What was one of your most memorablemoments in the minor leagues?

DM: When I played in ’05 [I hit] two homeruns one day and the next day two homeruns again, and one of them was to winthe game.

KN: What was going through your headwhen you were put in to pinch hit in thegame the Red Sox were losing against theTexas Rangers?

DM: [I] just really tried to settle down withall the emotions, and I was just thinkingabout getting a good pitch to hit, some-thing that was up that I could put a goodswing on. It definitely wasn’t about hittinga home run. I just wanted to drive JasonVaritek from second.

KN: Did you feel any pressure to perform?

DM: Not really because no one knew who Iwas so I wasn’t pressured. The thing thatkind of prepared me for that situation [was]last year when I played in the NationalLeague and got a chance to pinch hit a fewtimes. So that prepared me for the situationof pinch hitting. Really, [I] tried to eliminateas much pressure as I could, especially inthis game. You want to have fun. You real-ly don’t worry about the results, youjust worry about your preparationand then your results will take careof themselves.

KN: How did you prepare for this?

DM: Fortunately, on that day, I came to the

field late. I didn’t take any batting prac-tice. I took a few swings during the game, down in the [batting] cage. Sometimes theless you think about things, the better offyou are. So it was one of those situationswhen I didn’t have time to think about a

whole lot. I was just put in that situationand it was like, “Let’s go.” Terry[Francona] was like, ‘If Jason [Varitek] getson, you’re going to pinch hit,” and every-thing happened so fast I really didn’t havetime to think too much.

KN: Were you surprised when TerryFrancona kept you in to bat in the bottom ofthe ninth?

DM: After I pinch hit, I was in the field, soI knew if it came around to me in the bat-ting order that I would get a chance to hit.I think there were two outs, and theywalked Jason Varitek ahead of me, which Ikind of thought they would do, being thathe is a veteran guy, he’s been around a

long time, and they wanted to pitch to me.The second time it was the same: I justwanted to get a good pitch to hit, and for-tunately I got it out there far enough to hitoff the wall.

KN: What are your hopes for the future ofyour baseball career?

DM: I really don’t know. I try to just enjoyevery day. That’s what I tell the kids:enjoy every day. You really can’t think toofar ahead. You got to come to the fieldevery day and work hard and just enjoythe day, and then tomorrow will be anoth-er day. But to just be able to be hereand win a World Series ring withthe Red Sox would definitely top off my career.
