FACILITIESFRANCIS FIELD

Named for longtime friend and benefactor of Ripon College, Patricia Parker Francis, Francis Field is home to the Red Hawk baseball team, which has won 20 confer-ence championships, including an amazing champion-ship run in which they won the conference title in eight out of 10 years from 1998-2007. The fi eld was newly renovated in October of 2006, which included a new concession stand, new pressbox, brand new fencing around the fi eld, and additional seat-ing. The capacity at Francis Field is now approximately 350, with extra space to sit around the fence. Francis Field is located to the South of Storzer Center. Parking is available in the parking lots in front and to the west of Storzer. The fi eld can be accessed by walking around or through the building.

WEIGHT ROOM

The newly renovated weight room is located on the fi rst level of the J.M. Storzer Athletic Center and includes a wide variety of free weights and univer-sal machines. Students may also use the facility for cardio and abdominal training.

Ripon College is excited to announce a capital campaign to signifi cantly renovate and expand its athletic, health and wellness facilities to accommodate all students who wish to compete as a scholar-athlete or focus on their per-sonal health and wellness. Plans for the new facilities include a signature building with academic, fi tness and hangout spaces; room to accommodate offi ces for the coaching staff ; enhanced studio, cardio and gym spaces; and room for varsity athletics and intramural sports, among other enhancements. Ripon College athletics and intramural/club sports have enjoyed a long and proud tradition of excellence spanning more than 100 years, during which countless men and women have graced us with their talent and competitive spirit. We are proud to make this announcement, and look forward to sharing more details on the project as they become available.

2016 SEASON PREVIEW With 21 Midwest Conference championships in program history, the Ripon College baseball team doesn’t rebuild - they just reload. The Red Hawks will have to do just that this year after losing nine seniors to graduation, including their top two hitters and top two pitchers off a team that went 14-2 in confer-ence play for the third consecutive season en route to their fourth MWC Championship in six years. “There’s a lot of pride within this program in terms of con-tinuing that tradition. Coach Bob and Gordie Gillespie put us on a national stage and established us as the team to beat in the MWC,” Head Coach Eric Cruise said, as he enters his fourth year at the helm. “Our goal every year is to advance to the Division-III World Series and we put ourselves in a realistic position to do so through hard work and dedication. We understand what has been laid out before us and we bring in the right players that understand tradition and are able to put in the work necessary to achieve our goals.” This year’s team consists of 11 freshmen, 10 sophomores, seven juniors and just three seniors. Although it may be one of the youngest teams in the MWC, that doesn’t mean they lack experience. All 20 returning players have been a part of big games, including a win against third-ranked UW-Whitewater in the fi rst game of the NCAA Regional Tournament last season. “This will be a completely diff erent team because we lost so many players to graduation, but we have a talented group that has a nice mix of experience and some very talented fi rst-year players,” Cruise said. “The expectations don’t change because we have a young team, it just means that diff erent players will have to step up.” Ripon has fi nished fi rst in the MWC North Division each of the last three years. If they were to accomplish that feat for the fourth consecutive season, the Red Hawks would earn the right to host the MWC Tournament for the third time in the last four years, which is yet another goal of the team. “Anytime you get a chance to sleep in your own bed (dur-ing the MWC Tournament), it’s kind of nice,” Cruise said. “We’ve been the top seed in the North the last three years and we’d like to continue that tradition.”

CATCHER

One hole Ripon will have to fi ll will be at the backstop where Mitchell Busch and Nick Uhen both graduated after playing a key role for the Red Hawks during their four years. They will be replaced by a combination of three freshmen, as Michael Barnes, Riley Erickson and Frank Barone will all battle for time behind the plate. “All three of those players enter our program with solid High School experience and they all bring something diff er-ent to the fi eld,” Cruise said. “Barnes and Erickson were both All-State selections in High School and Barone also has tremen-dous experience.”

INFIELD

At fi rst base, Ripon would like to rely heavily on sopho-more Josh Oswald, who hit .389 during the fi rst seven games of his college career last year, before fi nishing the season with a .254 batting average, to go along with three doubles, four RBI and 10 runs scored.

“Oswald was one of the hottest players on the team at the beginning of last season, but kind of tailed off as the season wore on,” Cruise said. “He understands the adjustments he must make to be consistent for an entire season. He’s a power bat in the lineup who also does a nice job defensively. Freshman Justin LaFleur and sophomore transfer Doug Ferrell could also see some time at fi rst base in their fi rst year with the program. Arguably Ripon’s most consistent hitter during the last three seasons has been senior second baseman Nick Schmitt, who has led the team in RBI in each of those years. A two-time All-Region and All-Conference selection, Schmitt is coming off a season that saw him lead the team in doubles (14) and RBI (42), while ranking second on the team in home runs (5) and third in total bases (82) and runs scored (33). He enters his fi nal season with the Red Hawks ranking fi fth in school history in both career doubles (42) and RBI (133) and 10th in career total bases (236). With another season like last year, he could very well leave the school atop the record book in those fi rst two categories. “Schmitt is going to have to step into more of a high-pres-sure role due to some of the bats we lost to graduation,” Cruise said. “He will be our established bat in the middle of the lineup and has greatly improved defensively during his career. He is the key to our lineup and understands what will be asked of him.” Probably the biggest hole in Ripon’s lineup was created at shortstop with the loss of two-time All-American and MWC Player of the Year Michael Polcyn. Ripon will try to fi ll that void with freshmen Isiah Ramos and Hector Aguinaga. “Ramos and Aguinaga are the type of players we love to have in our program,” Cruise said. “They are both hard workers that are relentless in their work ethic and they’ll both improve our defense up the middle.” Sophomore Randy Finger is also expected to take on a larger role after batting .288 with six doubles, six RBI, one stolen base and 13 runs scored as a freshman. He will have the oppor-tunity to take over at third base. “Randy has the ability to square the ball up and go gap-to-gap and also has a good arm and plays solid defense,” Cruise said. “Like Oswald, his production declined as last season pro-gressed, but that served as a valuable lesson for both players.” Giving the Red Hawks some depth in the infi eld will be freshmen Nick Taranto and Brian Kennedy. “Taranto is a utility player that can play either spot on the left-side of the infi eld and he’ll add some power to our lineup,” Cruise said. “Kennedy will help us as a super utility player that has the ability to play anywhere.”

OUTFIELD

The leader of this year’s outfi eld will be senior Jake Reinke, who will take over center fi eld duties and is one of the fastest and smartest players on the team. A 2014 Academic All-Confer-ence performer, Reinke led the team in steals last year (4), while batting .268 with two doubles, seven RBI and 22 runs scored. “Reinke has a lot of speed and a high baseball IQ,” Cruise said. “He has contributed to our program each year he’s been here and we’ve been anticipating moving him to center fi eld for the last couple years.”

2016 SEASON PREVIEW Sophomore Nick Kita will move from third base to the outfi eld this season, likely manning left fi eld. He is coming off an inaugural season that saw him earn All-Conference honors after fi nishing third on the team with a batting average of .352. That was in addition to seven doubles, one home run, 23 RBI and 27 runs scored. “We knew Kita could hit coming out of high school, but we’re just as excited to be able to utilize him at diff erent posi-tions and use his athleticism,” Cruise said. “He saw a lot of fast-balls last year hitting in front of Polcyn, but he’s ready for the challenge of not having that kind of protection in the lineup.” At least three players will compete for playing time at the other corner outfi eld spot, as juniors Bradley Knoblock, Robbie Schuettpelz and Jimmy Doedens will each contribute to the team at some point. Knoblock fi nished last season with a .299 batting average, to go along with fi ve doubles, one triple, two home runs, 13 RBI and 15 runs scored, while Schuettpelz batted .203 with two doubles, three RBI and 10 runs scored. Doedens saw nine at-bats in 2015 and did not commit an error in fi ve chances during his fi rst year with the team after transferring. “Whoever hits well will be in the lineup. It’s going to be a good competition for that spot and it’ll also give us a deep bench that will allow us to make lineup changes accordingly,” Cruise said. “Knoblock is capable of playing great defense and has a great arm and Schuettpelz is a super utility player that can play anywhere.” Giving the team some added depth will be freshmen Cole Gerber, Cullen Oren and Kyle Rogers. “Gerber can hit and is a guy that will force us to make tough decisions in regards to playing time, while Oren is tran-sitioning from shortstop to centerfi eld and will give us some speed and the ability to steal bases,” Cruise said. “Rogers is also a strong player who will give us some off ensive production.”

PITCHER

As is the case most years, Ripon’s pitching will be one of the team’s biggest strengths. Juniors Aaron Langdon and Matt Hecht will be the top two arms in the rotation, with both players having a lot of experience pitching in big games. Langdon fi nished last season with a team-best Earned Run Average of 2.73, going 3-1 in fi ve starts, while striking out 31 batters and walking just 12 in 29.2 innings. Hecht added a 3-5 record in nine starts and struck out 42, while walking 17, to go along with an ERA of 4.73 in 51.1 innings of work. “Both players are ready for the challenge of being a top of the rotation guy, but they’re two completely diff erent pitchers,” Cruise said. “Langdon has a variety of pitches and has really developed over the last couple years, while Hecht went through some mechanical adjustments and is extremely eff ective at locating the ball.” Sophomores Drew Slade and David Knapp will each play a more prominent role in the rotation after combining for 14 appearances and five starts in their first year with the team last season. Slade finished the year 0-2 with a 3.62 ERA, to go along with 26 strikeouts in 32.1 innings, while Knapp was 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA and five strikeouts in nine innings. “Slade pitched well last year but only had two main pitch-es, and in order to succeed at the college level, a pitcher needs at least three, which he worked on over the summer,” Cruise said. “Knapp has also worked on developing a third pitch and has the mentality to be on the mound in pressure situations.”

Also expected to compete for a spot in the rotation is freshman Brice Swick, who enters the Ripon College baseball program with numerous accolades. “Swick was named First Team All-State as a senior in High School and earned Pitcher of the Year honors, while playing for arguably the best High School program in the State (Kimberly),” Cruise said. “He’s completely diff erent than everyone else in the ro-tation in that he fl at out gets guys out. He’s fearless and is extreme-ly talented and has a lot of experience pitching in big games.” Juniors Ryan Maier and Brandon Hughes will be counted on for some quality innings out of the bullpen. Maier appeared in seven games last season, striking out fi ve in 9.1 innings, while Hughes appeared in fi ve games, including one start, strik-ing out three in 6.1 innings of work. “Meier will be one of the top guys out of the bullpen and he wants the baseball with the game on the line,” Cruise said. “Hughes will make some spot starts for us and is working to become a more effi cient pitcher.” Ripon will count on senior Andrew Wood to lock down some victories as the team’s last line of defense in the all-im-portant role of closer. Last season, Wood made 10 appearances, going 0-1 with one save and an ERA of 3.27. He also recorded eight strikeouts, while walking two in 11 innings. “Wood thrives in high pressure situations, which makes him perfect for a closing role out of the bullpen,” Cruise said. “He’s a self-made man that earns everything he gets and he’s the epitome of a Ripon College baseball player with his hard work and dedication.” Sophomores Nick Henning, Brian Wilson, Cordell Walker and Ben Folger will also compete for innings in the bullpen. Of those four, only Henning saw playing time last year, pitching one inning of scoreless ball, allowing one hit and striking out two. “Henning is much more prepared entering his second season, and we’re hoping he can pitch some productive innings for us,” Cruise said. “We’ll also need Wilson, Walker and Folger to be ready when their name is called and they may need to get outs at crucial times.”

SCHEDULE

As always, Ripon will play a grueling 10-game schedule in Florida to start the year, in addition to their usual 16-game conference slate. As diffi cult as the Red Hawks’ schedule has been in the past, this year’s schedule may be the toughest yet, as four of their fi rst 10 games will be against teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Regionals, including the Division-III National Runner-Up, UW-LaCrosse. “This is one of the toughest non-conference schedules we’ve ever had, but we welcome the challenge,” Cruise said. “We’ll play the top four teams (UW-LaCrosse, UW-Whitewater, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh) from what is arguably the top conference in the country (Wisconsin Intercollegiate Ath-letic Conference) and our league schedule will be tough, but I believe we’re capable of winning the conference, which would mean hosting the 2016 MWC Tournament.” Ripon will open their 2016 schedule on March 12 against Coe College in Winter Haven, Fla. The Red Hawks’ fi rst home game is scheduled for March 23 against Marian University, with Ripon’s fi rst conference game slated for April 9 at St. Norbert.

COACHING STAFF On May 21, 2012, the Ripon College athletic depart-ment announced Eric Cruise as its 14th head baseball coach in school history. He spent the previous 11 years as an assistant coach for the Red Hawks, with seven as the team’s associate head coach. Cruise couldn’t have had a much better start as a head coach, as he was named Midwest Conference North Divi-sion Coach of the Year in each of his fi rst two seasons. In his three years at the helm, Cruise has led Ripon to a 72-47 overall record, winning 24 games in all three seasons. The Red Hawks have also gone 42-6 in the MWC during Cruise’s tenure as head coach, fi nishing fi rst in the MWC North Division in each season. Under Cruise, Ripon has posted a home record of 29-7, and has hosted the MWC Tournament two times. In 2015, Ripon won their 21st MWC Championship in program history, advancing to the NCAA Midwest Re-gional in La Crosse, Wis. In their fi rst game of that Regional, the Red Hawks defeated the defending national champion #3 UW-Whitewater. In that season, Cruise coached Michael Polcyn and Marshall Zahn to their second consecutive MWC North Player and Pitcher of the Year awards, respectively. Polcyn was also named All-American Honorable Mention. In 2014, Cruise coached the Red Hawks to a 14-2 conference record and a fi rst place fi nish in the MWC North Division. He also oversaw MWC North Player of the Year (Mi-chael Polcyn) and MWC North Pitcher of the Year (Marshall Zahn). Polcyn also earned Central Region Player of the Year and All-American First Team honors. The 2013 season, Cruise’s fi rst as a collegiate head coach, was a rousing success. He led the program to its 20th MWC Championship and 11th appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament, as the Red Hawks fi nished 14-2 in the MWC and in fi rst place in the MWC North Division. Prior to his time at Ripon College, Cruise spent two years managing the Oshkosh Giants in a semi-pro league. He also spent one year as an assistant varsity coach at Oshkosh West High School. In 2001, Cruise served as a media rela-tions intern with the Chicago Cubs. Cruise earned his bachelors degree in Mathematics Statistics from UW-Oshkosh in 2002 and received his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from UW-Oshkosh in 2008. A native of Oregon, Wis., Cruise graduated from Oregon High School in 1995. While in high school, Cruise earned two letters each in football and baseball. As a middle infi elder, Cruise received the Jack Statz award as a senior, which is given to the senior that shows the most commit-ment to the program with hard work and dedication.

Mac Shumann is in his fourth year as an Assistant Coach with the Ripon College baseball team. Prior to joining the Red Hawks, Shumann spent three years as Varsity Assistant and JV coach at Menasha High School. Shumann is a 2008 graduate of Ripon College where he was a corner infi elder on three Mid-west Conference Championship teams in his four years, advanc-ing to the NCAA Regional Tour-nament in all three of those years. An All-Conference selection in 2008, Shumann fi nished his career batting .318 with seven home runs and 91 RBI. He still ranks sixth in school history for career doubles (32) and 10th for career triples (6).

Matt Buhrow is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Ripon College baseball team. Prior to joining the Red Hawks, Buhrow spent two years as an as-sistant at Carroll University. A 2012 graduate of Carroll, Buhrow had a successful play-ing career for the Pioneers. He set single season school records for most innings pitched (64.1) strikeouts (51) and complete games (6). Buhrow received his B.S. Degree in Elementary Educa-tion from Carroll in 2012.

Zach Bayreuther is in his third season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Ripon College base-ball team. A 2013 graduate of Ripon College, Bayreuther was the start-ing shortstop on three Midwest Conference Championship teams. As a player, Bayreuther played in the second-most games in school history (150) and holds the school record for career walks (94). In his four years on the team, Bayreuther batted .288, with 23 doubles, four triples, one home run, and 62 RBI.

THE MIDWEST CONFERENCE The modern-era Midwest Conference was created in the spring of 1994 with the merger of the Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC), which had been sponsoring men’s championships since 1921, and the Midwest Athletic Conference for Women (MACW), which was formed to conduct women’s championship competition in 1977. Stated intent of the union was to preserve the tradition of both leagues while enhancing administration effi ciency and fostering equity between men and women’s sports. Organization of the MCAC was conceived at a meeting on the campus of Coe College, May 12, 1921. Charter members were Beloit, Carleton, Coe, Cornell, Knox and Lawrence. Hamline and Millikin joined the league in December 1921 but later with-drew. Ripon joined the Conference in 1923, Mon-mouth in 1924, Grinnell in 1940 and Lake Forest in 1974. Illinois College and St. Norbert joined in 1982 and Carroll followed in 1992. Carleton withdrew following the 1982-83 academic year. St. Olaf also competed in the conference from 1952-74, as did the University of Chicago from 1976-87. Coe and Cornell withdrew following the 1996-97 academic year, and in 2012 Cornell returned to the league. The purpose of the Conference since its for-mation has been to “maintain athletic activities on a plane in keeping with the dignity and high purpose of liberal education.” Competitive sports are regard-ed as a valuable part of the educational experience and are maintained for the benefi t of students. The MACW formed in 1977 after the “status of women’s athletics” on MCAC campuses was as-sessed and reported to be growing. The Conference adopted a governance structure similar to that of its male counterpart, empowering faculty with ultimate control and governance on major decisions. Charter members of the MACW were Coe, Cornell, Grinnell, Knox and Monmouth. Championships in basketball, cross country, outdoor track & fi eld, softball, swim-ming and volleyball were off ered in the fi rst year. Beloit was accepted to the league in 1981, Illinois College and the University of Chicago in 1982 and Lake Forest, Lawrence, Ripon and St. Norbert in 1983. Indoor track became a championship sport in 1984 and soccer was added in 1986.

Track and fi eld was the only sport contested in the MCAC’s inaugural year while football and basketball were added in 1922. Lawrence, Coe and Millikin topped the initial football standings in 1922, and Beloit won the fi rst basketball championship in 1922-23. Cross country was added in 1929, tennis in 1931, golf in 1934, swimming in 1936, wrestling in 1938, baseball in 1953, soccer in 1971 and indoor track (which previously had an informal champion) in 1977. After the merger of the two conferences in 1994, wrestling was dropped and women’s golf was added (1996-1997), putting the total number of championship sports for the Midwest Conference at 20. Member institutions of the now incorporated league (Nov. 2012) are Beloit, Carroll, Cornell, Grin-nell, Illinois College, Knox, Lake Forest, Lawrence, Monmouth, Ripon and St. Norbert. Macalester is an affi liate member in the sport of football.

ABOUT RIPON COLLEGEHISTORY

Ripon College, founded in 1851, was convert-ed from a college preparatory school to a four-year college in 1863. Its fi rst class — four women: Luthera H. Adams, Harriet H. Brown, Susan A.W. Saulsbury and Mary F. Spencer — was graduated in 1867. Today, Ripon’s campus encompasses 250 tree-covered acres and includes 25 buildings. The original three limestone buildings which witnessed the commencement of 1867 remain in use: East, Smith and West Halls. These, along with seven other campus buildings, were added to the National Regis-ter of Historic Places in 1995.

A traditional col-lege of the liberal arts, Ripon looks ahead without forgetting its distin-guished past. Col-lege Days, which fi rst appeared as a monthly literary magazine in 1868, is the oldest con-tinually published college newspaper in Wisconsin. The Ripon foot-ball team fi rst took

the fi eld against Lawrence University in 1893 (Ripon won 24-6) to be-gin what is believed to be the oldest football rivalry in the state. In 1911, Ripon College’s debate team wrote the constitution for Pi Kappa Delta, now a na-tional honorary society for debaters and orators. Its Hall of Fame now is located in East Hall’s Kresge Little Theatre. The National Forensic League was founded at the College, where the fi rst national speech tour-nament for high school students was held in 1931. In recognition of its academic excellence, the College was awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in 1953, placing it among a select group of the nation’s top colleges. Ripon has had three Rhodes Scholars: Latimer Johns, class of 1911; Thomas Reinecke, class of 1968; and Zachary S. Morris, class of 2002.

MISSION STATEMENTRipon College prepares students of diverse interests for lives of productive, socially responsible citizen-ship. Our liberal arts curriculum and residential cam-pus create an intimate learning community in which students experience a richly personalized education.
