    FADE IN:

    INT. CAR - MORNING

    Marcia slides into the drivers seat and slams the door.

    Shed fumbling around for her keys when THE AGENT pops upfrom where he was hiding in the back. Hes in a sharpsuit, directly behind her, pressing a gun into the backof her seat.

    Marcias startled.

    AGENTDont move dont look in yourmirror. Dont say anything. I havea gun pressed into the back ofyour seat.

    Marcia nods - super tense. The Agent hands her a tube ofsuper glue.

    AGENT (CONTD)Spread this around on your handsand then grab the wheel. Give itminute. I want you thinkingclearly.

    She does. He gives her a minute. Around them its a quietday on grungy side street in Los Angeles.

    MARCIAWhat kind of gun? I know aboutguns. You wouldnt think I do, butI surprise you.

    AGENTJust shut up. Good...I representan organization whose name is ofno importance. I have beenmonitoring you for some timebecause it is known that you havebeen providing shelter and

    resources to a double Agent ArthurWinchut, guilty of espionage, whohas gone underground.

    MARCIAIm not going to look at you. Immad, but I dont wanna get killed.

    AGENTGood idea.

    (He doesnt wait fora response)

    Tell me everything, where isArthur Winchut headed? What are

    his contacts?

    He leans over closer to the back of her head.

    Marcia stares forward out the windshield. Silent.

    AGENT (CONTD)I dont want to hurt you. I dontwant your money or your car. Ijust want information.

    He produces a bottle of RC cola with his free hand andhas a sip.

    Marcia swallows hard.

    MARCIAI dont know anything about this.You say you know me - I know youtoo. Youve been causing troublein this neighborhood. You did thisto my brother and scared him sobad he had stroke and died.

    The Agents surprised, taken aback.

    AGENTWhat? This neighborhood?

    Marcia nodding her head.

    MARCIATwo weeks ago. He told me about it- it had to be you. You make me somad. No one does this to me or myfamily. You better kill me causeotherwise Im gonna get you. Youshould see what I did to my former

    husband.

    The Agent truly thrown off track.

    AGENTWhat?

    Shes gotten to him and he tries to have another sip ofsoda and accidently drops it.

    Marcias shaking her head, but complying.

    MARCIA

    Yeah. Im gonna get you.

    He lifts up the gun and puts it to the back of her head.Now that its visible its clear to us that its a toygun.

    The Agent slips out.

    EXT. CAR - MORNING

    The Agent hurries off down the street with an attachecase and a Hefty garbage bag.

    Marcia in the car, nodding with anger, shaking the wheelwith her glued-on hands.

    CUT TO:

    INT. DALLS APARTMENT - MORNING

    Dall passed out on the couch in her underwear. Woken upby knocking at her door.

    She stumbles over and fumbles the door open, trying tothrow on a T-shirt, getting her head in one of the armholes, getting it all wrong.

    Its Mrs. Thorn who gives her a critically look.

    MRS. THORNYoure high.

    Dall shakes.

    DALLNo, pain pill - its... Its

    complicated.

    MRS. THORNIll bet.

    INT. DALLS APARTMENT - MORNING

    Dall back on the couch and Mrs. Thorn in a chair. Dallstill out of it - now also trying to process the heavynews Mrs. Thorn just dropped on her.

    DALL...Where is that?

    MRS. THORNIts connected to the top of yourspine.

    DALLI didnt know you could get cancerthere.

    She takes out a cigarette.

    MRS. THORNDall, you know this is a nosmoking building.

    DALLNo - I dont smoke it, I just look

    at it. It just... reminds me of...Stuff...

    Mrs. Thorn rolls her eyes.

    MRS. THORNWell, whatever you say Dall. But,if youre gonna smoke, do it onthe roof if you have to. Its anice view and you wont get anyonein trouble. Thats what Letty usedto do.

    DALLYeah but didnt she jump off theroof?

    Mrs. Thorn gives her another hard look.

    MRS. THORNNo, that was someone else. Dall,you know this is a specialbuilding. The only reason youreallowed here is that you weredoing direct care work with your

    aunt.

    DALLAnd now shes dead. I dontunderstand, last night she wasjust going get, whatever that wasremoved.

    MRS. THORNWeird things happen when youre inthe hospital. Sometimes theyhappen really fast.

    Dall traumatized, shut down, surfing denial.

    DALLI still understand how you wouldknow before me.

    MRS. THORNBecause Im the president of thetenants association and I knoweverything.

    She looks around at the apartment with a judging eye.

    DALL

    ...So how long do I have beforethey kick me out?

    MRS. THORNA couple of weeks. Thats for themto get the paper work puttogether.

    Dalls shaking her head.

    MRS. THORN (CONTD)You didnt have any plans putaside, did you?

    Dall shakes her head.

    DALLWell... With my aunt in and out ofthe hospital so much recently,Ive had all this time... Youcould say Ive been hearing aboutthis plan. Could be, reallyintense. And anyway, I thinkthings around gonna work out.

    Mrs. Thorn nods.

    MRS. THORNAs long as you get yourselfanother place and dont go back towhat you were doing before youmoved in with your aunt.

    Dall blinks.

    DALLYou really do know everything.

    Mrs. Thorn nods again.

    MRS. THORN

    Thats why I get elected everyyear.

    Dall digs a Zagnut out of her purse. It catches the Mrs.Thorns eye.

    MRS. THORN (CONTD)Hey, is that a Zagnut?

    DALLUh huh.

    MRS. THORN

    I just dont understand how youcan eat so much junk and still beso darn skinny.

    DALL(straight faced)

    I throw up a lot.

    CUT TO:

    EXT. GRIMY ALLEYWAY - MORNING

    Standing next to a dumpster, the Agent finishes changingshirts, throwing the old one in his garbage bag.

    Checks himself out in a reflective piece of broken glassleaning against the wall, making sure he can hide the gunhes carrying.

    EXT. BUS STOP - DAY

    Delphia sits alone, waiting for the bus. The Agent spieson her from a little ways down the sidewalk.

    He comes over and sits next to her, his attentionfocused, watching her. She doesnt notice him.

    AGENTHey you! Yeah, you!

    Delphia gives him the slow regard.

    AGENT (CONTD)Thats right. I have to talk toyou.

    The Agent smiles. Delphia just stares at him.

    AGENT (CONTD)My names Joe. Youre here byyourself -- arent you?

    Delphia shrugs and looks indifferent.

    AGENT (CONTD)A loner like me. I can alwaysspot the others... Listen, youseem cool, I need your help. Doyou wanna help me?

    Delphia slowly nods.

    AGENT (CONTD)You know what secret Agents are?

    DELPHIAJames Bond.

    AGENTUh huh. Now, do you know whatinternal security means?

    Delphia shakes her head.

    The Agent breaks out into a big goofy grin.

    AGENT (CONTD)No problem.

    He takes a city map of L.A. from his case and spreads itover his lap. He takes a RC bottle cap from his shirtpocket and holds it in front of the Venus. She squints atit.

    AGENT (CONTD)

    Bottle cap.

    He leans in close.

    AGENT (CONTD)You ever heard of triangulation?

    Delphia shakes.

    AGENT (CONTD)It is a method of finding doubleagents.

    Nods his head.

    Imitating him, Delphia nods back.

    AGENT (CONTD)Now here is the problem. What ifyou only had one set point on thelocation of the double agent. Andthat point itself was the size ofa whole city, like the size ofthis city.

    He dramatically looks at the map and all around them andthen back to the Delphia.

    AGENT (CONTD)How do you find him?

    Delphia stares at him.

    AGENT (CONTD)Chaos theory. The needle effect.

    Taps on the map for effect.

    AGENT (CONTD)They call it that because you canuse it to find the needle in thehaystack. Ive been using italmost two years now and its neverfailed me...

    He solemnly hands her the bottle cap.

    AGENT (CONTD)You see, I cant be the one whodrops it.

    Delphia holds the bottle cap up to his face, inspecting

    it like it was a precious stone.

    AGENT (CONTD)You just put your hand over themap and drop the bottle cap.

    (Big sigh)You think youre up for this?

    With his attention focused on the Agents intenseexpression, Delphia squeezes her hand around the bottlecap.

    Then she lifts up her other hand, also clenched into atight fist. She moves them around each other - magician-style - and presents them to the Agent.

    AGENT (CONTD)Whoa.

    He looks from her to her fists, trying to figure out thenew direction this encounter has taken.

    Delphia very serious. The Agent gulps.

    He picks a hand: empty. Chooses the other: empty.

    AGENT (CONTD)You got a lot of spunk kid.

    A bus roles up. Delphia stands and gets on, giving theAgent a look so that he follows.

    INT. BUS - MORNING

    The Agent asleep. Wakes up, disoriented. Sees that hessitting next to Delphia.

    Delphia points to two guys - WINTERMOUTH and ART - seatedacross from them.

    ART -- sickly and nervous -- in the aisle seat, staringat him wide eyed, while compulsively rubbing his handstogether. Next to Art is WINTERMOUTH -- asleep under awhite cowboy hat.

    DELPHIALives in my building. Chaos.

    The Agent squints at the guys. Delphia pointing directlyat Wintermouth, then gives him back his bottle cap andnods with supreme authority.

    Art stares at the Agent.

    ART

    Do you know me?

    EXT. BONNIE BRAE VILLAGE - MORNING

    INT. WINTERMOUTHS APARTMENT - MORNING

    GUY SHINES -- Arts identical twin, hanging out eating abowl of cereal.

    Wintermouth comes in. Hes smiling pleasantly - an easy

    going guy with a great sense of humor.

    Has his seat.

    GUYThought maybe something hadhappened.

    Wintermouth adjusts his neck.

    WINTERMOUTHHis bus had a flat tire out at 29Palms. Whataya gonna do?

    He shrugs and smiles.

    Guy smiles back and nods.

    INT. DALLS APARTMENT - MORNING

    Dall with her ear to the wall, listening, trying to findthe best place.

    INT. WINTERMOUTHS APARTMENT - MORNING

    GUYSo nobody - you got no funnylooks?

    Wintermouth looking at him like hes stupid.

    WINTERMOUTHTook him right up to your unit.Nobody looked twice... Nobodysuspects anything. Its straightas a razor.

    INT. DALLS APARTMENT - MORNING

    Dall puts a glass to the wall so that she can hearbetter.

    INT. WINTERMOUTHS APARTMENT - MORNING

    GUY(with his mouth full)

    You want anything?

    WINTERMOUTHYou cooking? Then Ill have threeeggs sunny side up and two piecesof white toast on the side.

    GUYNow do you mean one piece cut inhalf or two pieces of toast cutinto four pieces?

    Wintermouth stares at him in utter confusion. Squintshis eyes.

    WINTERMOUTHYeah, sure.

    GUYSee, weird as it sounds I neverseen you eat toast before. Someguys like to really cover theirtoast in egg yolk while other guyslike to spread it out more, withback up in case they need it. Ijust want to take sure you getwhat you want.

    Beat.

    WINTERMOUTHSure, sure. Two pieces of toast.And a glass of water, no ice.

    GUYGotcha.

    He bustles off into the kitchen. Wintermouth watches andwaits.

    After a bit Guy comes back with an ice cream sundae.

    GUY (CONTD)You didnt have any toast or eggsor anything. You want one ofthese?

    Wintermouth waves him off good-naturedly.

    WINTERMOUTHI had to give him a bottle. Heneeded it.

    GUYHe gonna be all boozed up by

    tonight?

    WINTERMOUTHHell be good. Nothing out ofhand.

    GUYWhat if he goes outside lookingfor more?

    WINTERMOUTHHe dont have a red cent on him,and besides I dont think hell

    take any strolls. I got thefeeling from the trip that theless he has to be around peoplethe better he likes it. We gotnothing to worry about.

    He grins.

    Guy nods.

    GUYThats right, because aftertonight we are going to be rich.

    WINTERMOUTHAnd its about time.

    Guy notices his hat for the first time.

    GUYSay, thats a nice hat. Where didyou get it? Out in the desert?

    Wintermouth touches the brim of his hat self-consciously.

    WINTERMOUTHYeah. Its funny, I never likedhats much before.

    GUYSince Ive known you I dont thinkIve ever seen you wear one.

    WINTERMOUTHNever been my thing. Got outthere and saw this in some littleshop. Just looked right. Feltright... Now I dont like takingit off.

    He stares at some unfocused pint in the distance.

    WINTERMOUTH (CONTD)I liked the desert. Never beenthere before -- you know I nevertraveled much. It was nice --dry, you know what I mean? ... Ithink we should go out there whenthe money comes in.

    GUYWhat are we going to do out there?

    WINTERMOUTHAnything we want. Learn to playgolf...

    He snaps back into reality.

    WINTERMOUTH (CONTD)Buddy, with one and a half milliondollars I guess we can take ourtime deciding.

    Guys grinning like the Cheshire Cat

    GUYWeve been talking about it longenough, and now its gonna happen.Wow.

    INT. DALLS APARTMENT - MORNING

    Dall listening to their conversation, hearing about themoney, how its all going down ASAP.

    DALLWow. This is it. This is it, thisis it, this is it. Seize it.

    She removes the glass from the wall and stares at it,thinking...

    EXT. WINTERMOUTHS APARTMENT - MORNING

    Guy leaves Wintermouths apartment and strolls off.

    Dalls been spying out of her cracked door. She comesout. Shes made herself over, trying for the fresh andperky look.

    Over to Wintermouths door. Stares at it, getting hercourage up. Knocks.

    No response. She knocks louder.

    After a moment Wintermouth opens, eying her, allfriendly.

    Dall puts a heater of a smile on.

    DALLHey.

    Wintermouth continues to look at her the same way.

    DALL (CONTD)I dunno if youve seen me around,but, I live here... too.

    She produces a calling card and extends it.

    DALL (CONTD)Im starting up this massageservice? Actually it was somethingI used to do a while ago but...Now Im getting it going again,and Im offering people in thebuilding discounts, big discounts,so I can get back up to speed.

    She extends the card more and turns up her smile.Wintermouth takes the card and gives it a look.

    WINTERMOUTHYoure not soliciting me honey,are you?

    DALL(slow and even)

    No... That would be illegal.

    WINTERMOUTHSure would. Of course with thisdiscount youre giving it away. Nosolicitation there.

    He grins.

    DALLJust trying to get to know youbetter.

    Wintermouth nods his head approvingly.

    WINTERMOUTHYou know I think do, I think Ineed a massage. You free in likethree hours?

    Dall pretends to think it over.

    DALLIn a manner of speaking. I mean -yeah - uh, you know my braindoesnt really work tilllunchtime. So okay, Ill see you.

    Dall walks off. Wintermouth scans around, sees the Agentsitting out in the garden, looking like hes a businessman dealing with his phone.

    Wintermouth shuts his door.

    EXT. SIDEWALK - MORNING

    Marcia marching all determined with her friendly friend.

    FRIENDLY FRIENDDont you think we should takeyour car?

    MARCIAThe cars another example of hisoppression.

    She holds up her hands. Theyre both red and shiny fromthe super glue.

    MARCIA (CONTD)Besides, to catch this guy wegotta act like him, we gotta movelike him.

    FRIENDLY FRIENDWhat if he has a car?

    MARCIAThen he wouldnt have been seen atthat bus stop. No, he thinks hesgot the upper hand, but man, hestands out, and then you know,Ive got the ace.

    FRIENDLY FRIENDWhats that?

    Marcia takes the empty RC cola bottle from her purse.

    MARCIAIts not like you can get thesejust anywhere. People notice. Wejust have to stay smart and stay

    on him.

    FRIENDLY FRIENDBut how do we know this is wherehe got off?

    MARCIASee, thats him infecting you.Were not going to let thathappen. Were gonna win this one,for my brother and everyone else.

    FRIENDLY FRIEND

    Thats fine, but I might have somestuff to later, back at thechurch.

    Marcia holds up a hand.

    MARCIA- Infection.

    EXT. BBV, GARDEN - MORNING

    The Agent sitting there. Looks over to Wintermouthsplace. Puts the tape recorder to his mouth.

    AGENT(low to recorder)

    This is undercover Agent Joe G.Host, reporting eleven two ninety-six, five fifty-four PM --continuing notes concerningprogress on tracking ArthurWinchut. With the help of a chaosoracle I have located an apartmenthe is possibly staying at -- three

    oh one...

    CUT TO:

    INT. COUNSELOR'S OFFICE - DAY

    Dall seated, in a completely different outfit. Takes acigarette out of her purse.

    DALLI know. I just wanted to look atit.

    COUNSELORWhats that about?

    Dall holds up the cigarette.

    DALLThis means Im seizing fate.

    DALL

    Im not smoking this. Im not asmoker. Im a healthy person. Iused to smoke, but then I decidedto seize my fate.

    Gestures with the cigarette.

    DALL (CONTD)See?

    COUNSELORDo you want to smoke?

    Dall nods vigorously.

    DALLWell yeah. It was one of the onlythings that helped me, when thestress got really high, you know?

    COUNSELORSo whats making you stressed?

    Dall gives him a look.

    COUNSELOR (CONTD)Ill remind you again. Justbecause the court is forcing you -

    DALLIts DCFS -

    COUNSELORThrough the court. Doesnt changethe fact that this is stilltotally confidential.

    DALLThats what you say. And then Isay yes, because if Im notcomplying then even though its

    confidential you say - somehow,and then I never see my son again.

    COUNSELORSo the meeting you had last weekdidnt make you feel any moreconfident?

    Dall shakes her head.

    DALLEverythings just coming down onme at once... Im getting evicted.

    If I dont have anywhere to liveIm not compliant - you know? If Igo to a shelter then I have tochange my county status, andthatll affect my meds - and youknow I just got back on my painmeds.

    COUNSELORWhat about your cocktail

    DALLThat hasnt gotten jammed up in awhile, thank goodness, but, I canfeel my health falling apartbecause of all this stress - Ijust dont know what to do.

    COUNSELORHave you been drinking?

    Dall shakes.

    DALLNo, but Im just, I dont know

    what to do... And you know itsgood I got my pain meds back, butthey make my head fuzzy, and Imjust having so much trouble tryingto think this through... I dontwant to end up in a shelter again.I might as well just be on thestreets.

    and I cant... Process. So if youreally wanna help me, remind me tobuy some coffee, like Folgers. Canyou do that?

    EXT. BBV, GARDEN - DAY

    The Agent still where he was, watching Wintermouthsplace.

    Squints at Wintermouths door. Clicks his recorder onagain.

    AGENT(low, to recorder)

    Not much to see. I dont know thisbuilding but I know thisneighborhood... Ill needprovisions...

    He gets up and heads out.

    EXT. WINTERMOUTHS APARTMENT - DAY

    Dall, in a completely different outfit, struts toWintermouths apartment door. Knocks.

    WINTERMOUTH(behind the door)

    Who is it?

    DALL(jokingly)

    Little Bo Peep.

    WINTERMOUTHOh right ... hold on, Im on acall.

    Dall moves to the edge of the window so she can hear therest of the conversation.

    WINTERMOUTH (CONTD)(OS on phone)

    ... you called me - yeah Im stillgood -- dont sound so excited ...just watching TV, you knowunwinding -- dont worry about me,Im going to Phils and Ill havethat alibi... You sound likeyoure looking forward to it, yougoofball. Okay, Ill see you

    later.

    Dalls very excited/nervous/anxious by all this.

    Hears him hang up.

    The door opens. His hats on and hes holding a drink.

    Dalls back to where she was. Stands there smiling.

    DALLBaa, baa.

    INT. WINTERMOUTHS APT - DAY

    Wintermouth walks back into the apartment followed byDall.

    WINTERMOUTHYou want something?

    DALLDoesnt everybody?

    Wintermouths confused by this.

    WINTERMOUTHThats funny. Youre a funnybunny.

    Dall looks down.

    DALLSo, what do you have?

    INT. WINTERMOUTHS APT, KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

    Dall goes into the filthy kitchen and snoops around.

    Dall goes to the bourbon and takes a hasty slug form it.

    WINTERMOUTH(OS yelling)

    I can tell you right now I aintgot anything worth stealing.

    (to himself)Yet...

    DALLDont be so paranoid.

    She fixes the drinks.

    INT. WINTERMOUTHS APT - CONTINUOUS

    Dall goes back to the main room. Wintermouth in hischair. She hands him his drink and stands over him. Hetakes a sip. Smacks his lips.

    WINTERMOUTHYummm, thats good.

    DALLOne of my many talents. What didyou mean by yet?

    Wintermouth smiles all innocently.

    WINTERMOUTHWhat?

    DALL(more excited -playing it cool)

    I heard you. You said you didnthave anything -- yet.

    She gives a coy, sleazy smile.

    WINTERMOUTH

    DALLReally?

    WINTERMOUTHWell this is all about fantasy,right? When you come down to it.

    Dall nods; incredulous.

    DALLSo you dont want?...

    It takes him a second to catch on.

    WINTERMOUTHOh no. Fantasy and pleasure. So Ican relax. You pretending to be myson is what would give mepleasure.

    DALLSo its not...

    WINTERMOUTHWhat? No - thats gross. Eeeew.

    DALLOkay, so you just want me to standhere?

    WINTERMOUTHSure. And youre just really happyto see me.

    He moves into her personal space so that she backs into awall, losing her options of possible escape.

    Dall holds up her knife, all awkward and clumsy.

    Wintermouth looks at the knife and then looks around andstarts laughing. Its creepy and without mirth. Dallfinds herself laughing too - fear laughing.

    He reaches out and takes hold of her wrist and squeezes.Dall lets the knife drop.

    The knife drops right into his foot.

    They stop laughing. Wintermouth looks down and sees theknife sticking out of his left shoe.

    He starts laughing - loud - barking - HA! HA! HA! Likesome sort of creepy robotic siren.

    He bends down and pulls the knife free. Hoists it up,threatening with it, still with the horrible laughs.

    Dall backs against the wall. Over his shoulder she seesMarcia approaching.

    DALLPlease.

    Oh my goodness.

    She sticks her hand into her purse. Lifts it up, firing agun inside, blasting Wintermouth six times who fallsover, making gurgling noises
