After a record-breaking year and a trip to the NCAA Division III “final four” last season, fourth-year head coach Kathy Taylor’s squad may be primed to make a another run deep into the postseason as the majority of the roster returns in 2012. The 2011 team won a school-record 21 games, which included a school record-tying 19-game winning streak, captured its 13th straight SUNYAC title and registered its 13th consecutive top-10 national finish with a tie for third. Taylor welcomes back 18 players, including eight of the team’s top-10 scorers from a season ago, as well as six newcomers.

Taylor has built a schedule designed to prepare the team for the postseason. The Red Dragons, ranked third nationally in Lacrosse Magazine’s 2012 preseason poll, face an early-season slate that features perennial powers Salisbury, The College of New Jersey and Franklin &

Marshall, all of which are ranked in the preseason top six. The schedule also includes traditional non-conference contests against 20th-ranked Ithaca, Union and William Smith.

The Red Dragons return one goalkeeper and welcome a sophomore newcomer in 2012. Junior Shauna Hutchinson appeared in 15 games with six starts last season, coming off the bench to make seven saves in 29 minutes, 15 seconds of action in the NCAA Division III Semifinals against Gettysburg. Overall, Hutchinson posted a 2-1 record with a .463 save percentage, an 8.41 goals against average and 15 ground balls. Sophomore Courtney Morgan started for one season at Locust Valley High School.

Defensively, Cortland returns five players from last season led by juniors Meg Rowe and Jamie Flood. Rowe earned first team All-SUNYAC honors for the second year in a row. She started all 23 games, recording 33 ground balls, 22 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers. Flood also appeared in the starting lineup 23 times. She finished third on the team with 39 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers and also collected 16 draw controls.

Junior Megan Milhaven played in 12 games in 2011, recording six ground balls. Sophomore Jessica Lavelle saw action in 21 games with two starts. Lavelle registered 16 ground balls, five draw controls and 14 caused turnovers. Sophomore Kerri Bretti came off the bench in eight games as a freshman.

Three of Taylor’s newcomers have the versatility to play defense or in the midfield. Junior Natalie Melaniff, who led her team to three straight Nassau County Class B Finals at Wantagh High School, was a two-year member of the lacrosse team at the University of Florida. Freshman Courtney Haas played four seasons at Williamsville East, earning second team all-section honors as a junior. Freshman Chelsea Martin was a four-year starter at Ogdensburg Free Academy, leading her team to a Section Ten Class C title as a junior while earning first team all-northern honors every season.

Cortland’s midfield is perhaps the strongest unit on the team with six returning players who combined to start 98 games and score 335 points. Senior Lindsay Abbott had a record-setting season in 2011. Abbott earned first team

All-America, all-region and All-SUNYAC honors and was named the SUNYAC Player of the Year and to the NCAA Division III “Final Four” All-Tournament Team. She shattered school records with 138 points and 76 assists, while also scoring 62 goals. Abbott led the team with 95 draw controls and was second with 45 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers and took over the top spot in career scoring with 311 points on 185 goals and a school-record 126 assists.

Junior Maria Di Fato amassed big numbers as a sophomore, earning first team all-region and All-SUNYAC honors. Di Fato led the squad with 67 goals and added 22 assists for 89 points. For the second consecutive season, she led the team in ground balls (64) and caused turnovers (67), while she finished second with 29 draw controls. Junior Mary Hartzheim stepped right into the lineup last season in her first year with the Red Dragons. Hartzheim, who was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP, played in and started 19 games in 2011. She scored 48 points on 30 goals and 18 assists and led the Red Dragons with six game-winning goals.

Senior Jordan Miller started the first 21 games of the season as a junior before an injury in the NCAA playoffs ended her campaign. Miller was a second team all-region and All-SUNYAC selection and was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team after scoring 22 points on 16 goals and six assists and contributing 37 ground balls, 26 draws and 16 caused turnovers. Sophomores Liz Beville and Heather Casey each saw action in all 23 games as freshmen, starting 10 and two games, respectively. Beville scored 33 points on 17 goals and 16 assists and added 15 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. Casey recorded three goals and two assists, as well as 18 ground balls, 16 draws and seven caused turnovers.

Freshman Emmalyn Osterling joins the Red Dragons as a midfielder. Osterling played four seasons at Victor High, three as a starter, earning first team all-league and honorable mention All-Greater Rochester honors as a senior.

While the Red Dragons lost their top attacker from last season, they return six players who combined to score 107 points on 82 goals and 25 assists in 2011. Senior Erin Kollar leads the unit as she makes a run at 100 career

points. Kollar, who was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team last season, scored 42 points on 36 goals and six assists, adding 13 ground balls and 16 draw controls. Junior Gina Campese saw action in 20 games, scoring 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists.

Sophomore Taylor Reh contributed 19 goals and 22 points in 20 games, which included 11 starts. Sophomore Taylor Robinson tallied 13 goals while starting seven of the 21 games in which she played. Junior Taylor Harney scored seven points on five goals and two assists in 14 games.

Freshman Marilyn Farrell joins the program at attack in 2012. Farrell, the younger sister of assistant coach Courtney Farrell, played three seasons at Fayetteville-Manlius, two as a starter, and earned second team all-league honors as a senior.

Kathy Taylor begins her fourth season as Cortland’s women’s lacrosse head coach in 2012. In her first three seasons, she has led Cortland to a combined 52-12 record (.813), three State Uni-versity of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament titles and three NCAA Div. III tournament appearances. Eight of her players have earned All-America honors - three each in 2009 and 2010 and two in 2011.

In 2011, Taylor guided the Red Dragons to a 21-2 record, the most wins in a season in program history. Cortland won its 13th straight SUNYAC title and was victorious in three NCAA tour-nament games before falling by two goals to eventual national champion Gettysburg in the Div. III Final Four. She was named the IWLCA Empire Region Coach of the Year, the ECAC Upstate New York Coach of the Year and the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for her efforts.

In 2010, Taylor guided the Red Dragon’s to a 17-3 record, the SUNYAC tournament title and a tie for ninth nationally. She coached the ECAC Upstate New York and SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.

In her first season, Taylor led Cortland to a 14-7 record, the conference tournament title and the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, while coaching the ECAC Upstate New York and SUNYAC Player of the Year.

Prior to her arrival at Cortland, Taylor was a highly success-ful girls’ lacrosse coach at Fayetteville-Manlius (N.Y.) High School from 1988-2006. During that stretch, her teams posted an over-all record of 245-62-3 (.795), won two New York State Class A titles (2004 and 2005) and five Section Three crowns.

The two-time Central New York Coach of the Year coached 12 high school All-Americans and five United States National Team players while developing the growth of the Fayetteville-Manlius program from one to five teams.

Taylor also has served as a New York State National Tour-nament Coach at a recruiting tournament for high school girls looking to compete at the highest collegiate level. She coached the New York State number-two team in 2004 and led the state’s number-one team to the championship game in 2005. Taylor also guided the North team to a victory in the 2006 Un-der Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic at Towson University.

In addition to her coaching duties, Taylor was the Section Three girls’ lacrosse chair, represented the section on the New York State Lacrosse Committee from 2000-02 and served as the All-America Lacrosse Committee chair from 2003-06. She founded the Rising Star Lacrosse Camp in Fayetteville to teach lacrosse skills to younger age groups and has directed the camp since 1998.

A 1984 Cornell University alumna with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Taylor played varsity lacrosse for the Big Red from 1982-84. The former Kathy Milmoe, she became the first Cornell women’s player to earn first team All-Ivy League honors during her senior season.

Taylor and her husband, Joe, were both inducted into the U.S. Lacrosse Upstate New York Chapter Hall of Fame in October of 2010. Joe was a four-year let-terwinner at Cornell and played on the Big Red’s 1977 champi-onship team and 1978 national runner-up squad.

A native of Canastota, Taylor and her husband reside in Manlius and have three children - Kelly, Kristen and Matthew. Kelly and Kristen were standout players under their mother’s guidance at Fayetteville-Manlius and played

for the 2009 NCAA Division I runner-up University of North Carolina. Matthew currently plays at Division I Cornell Univer-sity.

Courtney FarrellAssistant Coach

The 2012 season is Courtney Farrell’s second as a member of the Cortland women’s lacrosse coaching staff. Prior to Cortland, Farrell served as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College and American University and worked several youth and high school camps at universities around the East.

Farrell is a 2008 graduate of Cornell University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in applied economics and man-agement. While at Cornell, Farrell was a four-year member of the Big Red women’s lacrosse team, earning All-Ivy and All-America honors.

A 2004 graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius, Farrell competed in lacrosse, soccer and indoor track and helped lead her la-crosse team to a state title as a senior.

About SUNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed 16th nationally out of approximately 440 colleges and universities in the 2010-11 all-sport Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only five nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 16 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 15 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena; racquetball and squash courts; a wrestling room; modern athletic training facilities; and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
