2012 TEam Guide

C O R T L A N D

After serving as the top assistant coach for the Cortland men’s soccer program for two seasons, Steve Axtell takes over the reins as the head coach in 2012. Coming off a season in which the Red Dragons tied the NCAA Div. III record with nine overtime games, Axtell looks to lead Cortland back to prominence in the SUNYAC and the region. Fourteen players return from 2011 as well as two others from the previous season, and Axtell expects the lessons learned from the games that went into extra time last season to translate to success in 2012. Axtell also brings in 10 newcomers to compete for playing time.

Axtell welcomes back three goalkeepers this season. Sophomore Tim Beauvais earned the starting spot toward the end of last season, getting the nod in the final five games of the campaign. Overall, he started eight games, posting a 2-4-2 record with a 1.39 GAA, a .793 save percentage and two shutouts. He recorded a shutout through two overtimes in his first collegiate start. Sophomore Brian McNicholas played in eight games with six starts. He recorded a 1.41 GAA with a .771 save percentage. Junior Robert Emmett started two games as a sophomore, including the opening game of the season. His best effort came at home versus Ithaca where he stopped three shots and did not allow a goal in the first half of action.

Five players return on defense. Junior Ian Cusack, who appeared in all 18 games as a freshman, played in and started 11 games in 2011, missing five matches due to injury. Senior Cody Carbone is back with the squad after missing the 2011 season. Carbone started five games in 2010.

Junior Manny Moyse is in his third year with the program, while sophomores Andres Padilla and Andrew Troisi have made the move to defense in 2012 after combining to play 20 games in the midfield as freshmen.

The midfield unit includes five returning players. Senior Anthony Marinello played in all 16 games with 14 starts in his first year with the program in 2011, collecting one goal and one assist. Senior Anthony Lubrano saw the field in all 16 games with 15 starts as a junior. Junior John Recordon, who also may see time up

top, contributed five points on two goals and one assist while playing in 15 games that included seven starts. Junior Gabriel Morales returns to the program in 2012 after seeing action in 14 games as a freshman. Junior Sam Kirschenbaum collected one assist in 10 games in 2011.

After scoring just 20 goals in 2011 and losing four of their top six scorers, the Red Dragons are looking for players to put the ball in the net this season. Three returners should get their opportunities. Junior Chris Barbosa tied for second in scoring in 2011 with seven points on three goals and one assist. He played in every game with seven starts. Sophomore Chris McBride, who appeared in 15 games with 14 starts as a freshman, broke into the scoring column with two goals in the finale last season. Junior Bryan Merlos netted one goal in 16 games, including six starts, in 2011.

Four freshmen join the program on defense. Cory Laga was a three-year starter at Pascack Regional and led his team to the state semifinals as a senior. Greg Orkiszewski, who earned all-county honors as a senior, was a three-year starter at John H. Glenn. Korey Robinson started for three seasons at Smithtown East and was an all-league and all-conference selection as a senior. Alex Wilson helped guide his Cicero-North Syracuse team to three league titles during his three seasons and earned all-league honors twice.

Three newcomers are on the roster as midfielders. Junior Joe Buffolino was a two-year starter at Suffolk Community College, where the team won a junior college national title his freshman season. Freshman Jordan Mastronardi played three seasons at Union-Endicott, earning first team all-conference honors as a senior. Freshman Robby Reiser started for three seasons at Half Hollow Hills East and was an all-league and all-conference selection as a junior and senior.

Three new players also join the team at forward. Sophomore Joseph Cillis played one season at Medaille College, where the team posted a 19-4-1 record. Junior Matt Williams last attended Springfield College after being named second team all-state and Class B Player of the Year at Cobleskill-Richmondville, while sophomore Arnold Gorr comes from Cologne, Germany.

About SUNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, more than 7,200 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed 10th nationally out of approximately 440 colleges and universities in the 2011-12 all-sport Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only five nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 17 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 15 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena; racquetball and squash courts; a wrestling room; modern athletic training facilities; and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
