TIPS FOR FINDING AN OIL & GAS JOBBY CHARLES STRACHEY,

ALBERTA HUMAN SERVICES

Are you looking for a career in an industry that is

growing, embraces the latest technology, pays good

wages, and doesn’t fence you into a cubicle all day?

Alberta’s oil & gas industry offers a wide variety

of exciting and rewarding career opportunities. En-

ergy workers earn 40 per cent more than the average

Albertan: $38.54 vs. $27.72 per hour. And, oil & gas

workers are in demand.

More than a dozen local energy companies

were at the Central Alberta Career and Job Fair

(www.centralalbertajobfair.com) on September 10

looking to fill a wide variety of positions, including:

• Shop Hands• Floor Hands• Derrickhands• Drilling Rig Hands• Well Serving Rig Hands• Labourers/Swampers• Operators (Frac, Hydrovac, Coiled Tube)• Class 1 Drivers• Snubbing Operators

Every working rig creates 135 jobs—25 rig work-

ers and 110 spin off jobs for truck drivers, geologists,

engineers, directional drillers, and others. And the

rigs are expected to be busy this fall and winter.

Alberta’s energy industry offers many fantastic

opportunities, but you need some important infor-

mation before you start sending out your resumés.

Recruiters strongly recommend you research

a position before you apply. Talk to people in the

know, consult a trusted web site or watch a You-

Tube video about being a Snubbing Operator, for

example, before you apply for a job to be one.

More than 500 occupational profiles (salary,

working conditions, required training, etc.) and 200

videos are posted on the Alberta Learning Infor-

mation Service (ALIS) web site http://occinfo.alis.

alberta.ca.

Oil and gas jobs are physically demanding—many

require you to work outside in extreme weather con-

ditions for long periods of time in remote locations.

Many rig crews work 12-hour days, 14 days straight.

Many employers require job applicants to have

their H2S and First Aid certificates, a valid driver’s

license, a clean driver’s abstract and be able to pass

a pre-employment physical exam and drug-screen-

ing test.

Want your resumé to stand out from the others?

Companies want to see that you have experience

working with heavy equipment outdoors in the

weather as part of a team.

You can also catch a recruiter’s attention by drop-

ping off your resumé in person or speaking to them

at a job fair. This puts a face and a personality to

your resumé. Upcoming Alberta Government job

fairs are posted on: http://humanservices.alberta.ca/

jobfairs.

If you are interested in a job on a rig, the Canadi-

an Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors offers

two web sites where you can test your rig readiness:

Drilling Rigs www.rigtech.ca

Service Rigs www.servicerigdrive.ca

And don’t forget the huge opportunities in Al-

berta’s Oilsands. There is a list of oilsands careers

at: http://albertaoilsandsjobs.net. And some large

oilsands employers have helpful careers information

and videos on their web sites.

For more help with your career planning or job

search, visit the Red Deer Alberta Works Centre in

First Red Deer Place at 4920 – 51 Street, Red Deer.

The centre is open weekdays, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

GREEN HANDS: WHAT YOU NEED & WHEN TO APPLY

FROM RIGTECH.CA

You don’t need much formal training to start in this industry.  Your company

and your crew will work with you to get you up to speed on your responsibilities

on the rig floor.  That said, drilling companies expect serious applicants to have

the following qualifications.

• First Aid Certificate• H2S Alive Certificate• Mobility – driver’s licence and vehicleRigs are busiest in the winter. In the spring, thawing roads and soft fields make it difficult to move equip-

ment.  Rigs shut down while industry waits for the ground to dry out.  This pe-

riod of low rig activity is called spring break-up.

Because of the way energy companies time oil and gas exploration in western

Canada, rig activity will remain low through the summer and start to climb again

in the fall.

Industry hires for winter operations in November and December.  This pe-

riod is known as ramp up.

What Does This Mean for Your Job Application? The hardest times for new applicants to get hired are spring (when rigs aren’t

working) and summer (when drilling companies focus on getting experienced

employees back to work).

The best time to inquire about job opportunities is right before peak rig ac-

tivity (November and December).  That’s when the industry fills crew vacancies

with new applicants.   Fall is also a good time to inquire about employment.

Rig work is also cyclical.  Market investment in oil and gas means more rigs go

to work.  When these commodities are high in stock market value, rigs are busy.
