Bank SENDU is not really a bank. It is a term for community cooperation that

collected organic and inorganic garbage from the neighborhood. People whobring their garbage to this bank will be paid and the money will goes tocommunity saving that can be used to fund community needs and events. Thisbank was established in 2007. The founder name is Madam Etty firstly thoughthow to provoke and educate her neighborhood in the slum area to be aware ofgarbage. Thus she started the community meeting to discuss how to solve thisgarbage and cleanliness of their area problem. She start with sweat and hardworking by conducted door to door socialization to market her idea aboutcollecting garbage and getting money from it. Time to time her efforts wereanswered and the community embrace her idea. She start the first project bymaking green their alley and neighborhood before they start this bank. Sheaimed to educate and raise society awareness about clean environment andgarbage. Then she celebrated her success along with community response to

collect and classified their household garbage. Etty embraced this opportunityand start to provide and establish the garbage center then later it called byBank SENDU where all the community garbage kept and the people whobrought their garbage will be recorded and paid by kinds of garbage and itsweight. She also established community volunteer to assist her in this bank aswell as keeping the money gain from selling their garbage to outsider buyerswho will use this garbage for their business. Those money goes to communitysaving and they record and report it to the community transparently. They havespent some of their money to build community security station, boughtflowerpot to be put at their alley, fund community gathering events.



Every household should be collected and classified their own garbage. Dry or

inorganic should be grouped like this. The organic garbage collected daily and

will be converted as natural fertilizer that can be used freely by the community.



The community has their garbage separated in different garbage bins put in

the neighborhood. It was the result from a continuous raising awareness

activity by the bank founder.



Children and teenagers are also actively involved and enthusiastic to collect

and deliver their garbage to the bank because they can clean the

neighborhood as well as saving their money by their own. It is also educateyouth to saving their money as well as social entrepreneurship.



All the garbage will be separated and recorded by the respective volunteer of

the bank. The volunteer will write the name, kinds of garbage and its weight

then it will be converted to the price list.



The price of the garbage will depend on the kind as classification. Many youth

delightfully collect the most expensive garbage to increase their saving in this

bank.



Soon after the garbage recorded they can put their garbage in the shelter in

the same group. The garbage will be here until the outsiders buyers come to

pick and pay for selected garbage as their chosen.



Some of the garbage can be recycled to be a home industry such as bag,

wallet, apron and any other handicraft. The owner of this home industry is also

a co-founder of this bank name Madam Yati. She employed 7 people some ofthem is jobless youth in her home industry. They can create lots of kinds orthings from garbage made by plastic materials.



The handicrafts such as showed will be sold to the supermarket or in the

handicraft exhibition events. It is the result of home industry in their

neighborhood as part of the bank program.



The best outcomes from this bank are cleaning, making green and purify

polluted Jakarta’s air in the neighborhood. Nowadays, Madam Etty can

celebrate her hard efforts to establish the garbage bank – Bank SENDU . Herbank was replicated by many slum area in Jakarta. This social andenvironment awareness enterprise concept also replicated in outside Jakarta

such as Bantul, Yogyakarta. She also convinced us that this kind of socialentrepreneurship will not only be able to save the environment but also savethe economics and can be done by someone who is committed and believesto the power or society.
