This is one of our chapter’s annual recruitment events where attendees are split into teams and try to be the first to win while exploring the Las Vegas Strip. Another big event of ours for September was “Surviving P1.” This is a scholastics and recruitment event that our chapter puts on annually where we offer advice to the current P1 class on study skills, work/life balance, and preparing for IPPEs among other topics. Both events were great opportunities for the Brothers of Beta Upsilon to get to know the P1 class and provide insight on transitioning into Pharmacy school.

St. Jude’s Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancerwith Phi Delta Chi’s Pacific Region

On Saturday September 22, Phi Delta Chi chapters all over the Pacific Region and the USgathered together to support our national philanthropy St. Jude and raise money for childrenwho are undergoing chemotherapy so their families never receive a bill for anything. As of theend of September, our Fraternity had surpassed our initial goal, raising $52,760 for St. Judethroughout the nation. The Pacific Region contributed over $4,200 for the Walk. Specialacknowledgement to the Omicron Chapter at USC for raising $1,230 and the Pacific NorthwestAlumni Chapter for raising $1,150. Thank you Pacific Region for all of your hard work! Continueto read about two Brothers’ experiences with the St. Jude’s Walk and to see more photos!

St. Jude’s Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancerwith Phi Delta Chi’s Pacific Region

This was my first year doing the St. Jude Walk and itwas an overall amazing experience. Along with ourBrothers from Chapman and KGI, we walked 5K for agreat cause. During the opening ceremony, theyintroduced us to a couple children that were saved bySt. Jude Hospital and it was just a very humbleexperience to listen to their stories. It makes me proudof how Phi Delta Chi is in partnership with St. Jude.Knowing that the money we raised is going to greatcause is very heart warming. Itwas awesome walking with myBrothers and just having a greattime. I hope in the future wecan do more with our sisterChapters! Eric Nguyen, Omicron

While participating in the St. Jude Walk toEnd Childhood Cancer, it was amazing toshare the experience with my fellowBrothers. As this was my first event withBrothers from other schools, I felt a truesense of Brotherhood as they welcomedme with open arms. Although there is astrong sense of camaraderie within a singlechapter, I was able to have firsthandexperience of how the fraternal bondsextend to all Brothers. This is an incrediblecause and it allowed many individuals toshare it and make the event memorableand meaningful. Caroline Sun, DeltaEpsilon

Dana and I attended Dean’s Hour for our Buddy Day event. Dean’s Hour is an event set aside bythe Dean in which he asks guest speakers who work in the pharmacy profession to come in andprovide an insight into their employment. This Dean’s Hour, our guest speaker is Ms. VirginiaHerold, who currently works as the executive officer at the Board of Pharmacy. As part of herline of work, Ms. Herold works with and provides advice to the 13 Board of Pharmacy membersin policy development and implementation of the enforcement, licensing and regulatoryprograms with the goal of furthering consumer protection. This session was informative inregards to what else the Board of Pharmacy does and how they get their funding.

The attendees of this Dean’s Hour also got a glimpse of various photos of pharmacies that hadcluttered compounding spaces and of pharmacies that were clearly not aware of the term“sterile”. Ms. Herold assured us that, because they must enforce and implement the policiesthey develop to ensure that safety of the consumers, the Board helps pharmacists and everyoneelse involved in the pharmacy profession stay on track. They help us stay out of trouble, and ifwe do get in trouble, they help us fix our mistakes. James Gatmayan
