Recruitment
Part 1Tips for Success
Common Myths• “We need someone from the Industry”– Not necessarily– The core skills are the same in many industries– New ideas and thoughts can be refreshing– If all the good ones are employed do you want to
settle for mediocrity– Keep an open mind and consider all the options
Common Myths• “We don’t have time to train someone again”– This may only be valid in the case of core
competencies or disciplines– Industries change rapidly so training is not a liability– Knowledge assets depreciate rapidly with constant
change and require training to retain value– Consider training may be an asset to moulding
desirable behaviours and skills
Common Myths• “Money is a key driver and motivator”– Not true. Work-Life balance and complementary lifestyles
are as at least as important– Promote your organisation to candidates and to the
market– Existing staff are your greatest talent scouts– No one wants to be well paid and miserable– Make the effort to minimise the impact of the salary
package and invest in the lifestyle and culture
Do’s and Don’ts• DO
– Think about the Team Dynamics
– Think about the Team Values– Think about the existing
Team’s Strengths and Weaknesses.
– Think about what the Team needs to return to Performing status
– Ignore the Myths, trust your judgment and seek support
• Don’ts– Underestimate the Loss reflex– Settle for 2nd best– Miss the opportunity for
renewal– Expect the recruit to fix OLD
issues– Forget the Team Dynamics– Plan for immediate results-
your decision is a long term investment
