 Issue 5, Fall 2014 The newsletter of the Hillsborough Township Department of Parks and Recreation Issue 5, Fall 2014 National Visit A Park Day Held this year on Friday, October 3, National Visit a Park Day, hosted by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the NRPA’s Young Professional Network, is a day to set aside unnecessary obligations to visit your local, state, regional, or national park. The mission of Visit a Park Day is to engage people to learn more about their local, state, and national parks as well as provide for education and recreation opportunities within the parks to foster future enjoyment and visitation to these parks. Hillsborough has 19 parks and facilities, each with its own features. From rolling hiking trails at Otto’s Farm Park, to basketball courts, softball fields, and a fishing pond at Ann Van Middlesworth Park, there is something for everyone to enjoy a Hillsborough park. Summer Days Drifted Away The leaves have turned orange and red, but not before a fun-filled summer full of events, programs, and camps offered by the Department of Parks & Recreation. Nearly 900 Children PlayingYouth Soccer This FallYou can’t find a soccer field withouta youth recreation game played onSaturday mornings in Hillsborough.That’s because nearly 900 childrenfrom age 3 to high school are onteams in the Recreation YouthSoccer League.

The Recreation Youth In-TownSoccer League is one of the mostpopular programs offered by thedepartment.

All leagues use field sizes, ball sizes,and rules specially tailored to theirage group and abilities.

Fall Soccer Season Underway

First Annual Senior OlympicsHeld at AVM on October 1Medals were awarded in seven

events at An Van MiddlesworthPark in Hillsborough’s first annualSenior Olympics on October 1.

A collaborative event withHillsborough’s Departments ofParks and Recreation and SocialServices and the HillsboroughYMCA, over 80 senior citizensparticipated in bocce, pickleball,ladder ball, horseshoes, corn hole,basketball, and softball.

The Olympics began with theParade of Competitors, followed byopening remarks fromCommitteewoman Gloria McCauleyand Joetta Clark Diggs, aHillsborough resident and four-time Olympian (’88, ’92, ’96, ’00).

After the opening ceremony, theparticipants rotated through theevents. The park was full ofactivity, with events on thebasketball courts, softball field, and

picnic area. After a lunch break, thechampionship rounds in each sportwere contested.

Medals were presented to the first,second, and third place teams andindividuals at the closingceremony. The HillsboroughRockettes and Rocket closed thegames with a dance performance.

Park Spotlight:Otto’s Farm Park

Otto's Farm Park is a bucolic100 acre area of Hillsborough's

extensive Open Space andPreserved Land, located at the

corner of Wertsville andMontgomery Road.

Acquired by HillsboroughTownship in the late 1990's, the

area is dedicated to passiverecreation, wildlife habitat and

restoration of native plants..

Over 320 boys and girls played in theleagues this summer.

With no practices and the outdoorgames, the Summer In-TownBasketball League is a fun way forchildren to continue playingbasketball, in a fun, non-competitive,friendly environment with theirfriends.

Winter In-Town Youth Basketball League

The 2014-2015 Winter In-Town Basketball League is open to Boys in grades4-8 and Girls in grades 4-6. Recreation basketball is a fun, non-competitive

leagu e wher e ch ildre n are able to le arn th e ga me and improve theirskills with a weekly practice session and games on Saturdays.

Winter 2014-2015 Activities Guide and Registration

Be on the lookout for our Winter 2014-2015 Activities Guide, scheduled tobe published in mid-November. Programming information in that issue will

include all Winter Youth and Adult Programs, Winter Swim Lessons, andSpring Soccer and Softball Leagues. Registration will begin in mid-

November.

Christmas Tree Lighting

The annual Christmas Tree Lighting will be held on Friday, December 5 atthe Municipal Building. Don’t miss out on your chance to see Santa!

Children’s Hallowe en PartyWear Your Costume and Join Us on October 30

Join us for a fun filled afternoon, with a hayride to ourpumpkin patch, pumpkin picking, and a walk through our

haunted house. Pre-registration is required and is $5 perchild. Wear your costume!

Families are also encouraged to participate in ourPumpkin Carving Contest! There is no cost toparticipate. Pre-registration is required. Families willbring pre-carved pumpkins to the Halloween Party. Moreinformation is provided at registration.
