Field Records - Insects

Discovery of the second European species of Megophthalmus Curtis (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae, Megophthalminae) in Ireland

The genus Megophthalmus contains two European species, M. scanicus (Fallen, 1806) and M. scabripennis Edwards, 1915 (Le Quesne, W. J. 1965 Handbooks for the Identification of British

Insects 2 (2a). Royal Entomological Society of London, London). M. scanicus is known to occur in Ireland and can fairly readily be found in suitable grassland habitats (Morris, M. G. 1974

Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy 74B: 7-30), while M. scabripennis has not been reported in Ireland before. The finding of a male M. scabripennis at Teagasc Grange, Co Meath (N884532), thus represents a new record for Ireland. The specimen was collected from a suckler beef

grassland on 5 August 2005 using a Vortis suction sampler (Arnold, A. J. 1994 Crop Protection 13: 73-76). It has now been deposited in the Natural History Museum, Dublin. M. scabripennis is thought to be mainly a dry grassland species and known from parts of western Europe and the

Mediterranean area (Le Quesne 1965 op. cit:, Nickel, H. 2003 The leafhoppers and planthoppers of Germany (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha): patterns and strategies in a highly diverse group of phytophagous insects. Pensoft Publishers, Sofia-Moscow).

Korynetes caeruleus (Degeer) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) and Gibbium psylloides (Czempinski) (Coleoptera: Ptinidae), beetles new to Ireland

One of us (RN) was given samples obtained from an infestation in a second-hand furniture store at Donegal! Pass, Belfast (J3473), on 7 April 2006. The main species present was

woodworm Anobium punctatum (DeGeer), with lesser numbers of Anthrenus verbasci (L.),

Attagenus pellio (L.) and several Korynetes caeruleus (DeGeer). Korynetes is a predator of Anobium punctatum and of death-watch beetle Xestobium rufovillosum (DeGeer), and occurs

locally (Nb status) in the wild in Britain, but is not recorded for Ireland (Anderson, R etal., 1997 Irish Coleoptera: a revised and annotated list. Irish Naturalists' Journal Special Entomological Supplement: 1-81. Irish Naturalists' Journal, Belfast). It is a small, bright blue member of the Cleridae (checkered beetles) with long, dark pubescence and bears a striking resemblance to the common bone beetle Necrobia violacea (L.) which is in the same subfamily of Cleridae. So close is the resemblance that errors of identification are frequent in the literature relating to stored product pests and may have been made in the past in relation to Irish specimens of Korynetes. The main difference between the two lies in the structure of the antennal club. In Korynetes this is poorly

marked and rather long and narrow with quadrate segments, while in Necrobia violacea it is well

marked, rather short and broad with two strongly transverse penultimate segments and a broad, truncate terminal segment.

On 10 May 2004, a small infestation of the globular spider beetle Gibbium psylloides (Czempinski) was detected in the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum storeroom at Cultra, Co Down
