In the summer of 1940, Warren played CF for the Shakopee Indians town team that won the state championship. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and played 2 years professionally for the Eau Claire Braves in the Northern League. He served his country in the US Army during World War II. After a brief stint with his family’s business, Warren attended the University of St. Thomas and then taught social studies at Belle Plaine High School from 19521953. He spent the rest of his teaching career in Burnsville and was also their varsity baseball coach. Warren raised his family in Shakopee while playing for the Shakopee Indians town team for several more years, coached throughout the Shakopee youth baseball program, and was one of SHS baseball’s biggest fans until the time of his death on October 14, 2005. Warren was known to be one of the best baseball players to ever play for Shakopee; however, he was equally known for his class and sportsmanship. In 2000, the Shakopee High School baseball team created the Warren Stemmer Class Act Award, which is given each season to the player who best embodies fair play, sportsmanship, and dedication to teammates and the game. May all involved with games played here at Warren Stemmer Field follow his example of respecting the game, while representing themselves and their community with class!
