In today’s Footy Record we meet Albanvale’s American recruit Jonathan Showman – what an incredible story he has.

Showman made the journey from Oklahoma to Melbourne, albeit to travel and see Australia, but also to play footy. In his story on Page 5, he talks about his great love of the game and how the bond you forge with teammates and the

club community can be everlasting. While his path to football may be strange to some, his ability and willingness to learn all he can about the game is undeniable. He started playing footy with the Tulsa Buffaloes in 2015 and now, here is in the WRFL, determined to improve his game. Now more than ever before, our game is going beyond the borders of Australia. It is attracting athletes from across the globe, including aspiring footballers from America. Collingwood’s Mason Cox and St Kilda’s Jason Holmes are examples of this. Less than two years ago Cox hadn’t heard of ‘Aussie Rules’. Fast forward to 2016 and he has quickly rised through the ranks, making his debut for the Magpies on Anzac Day in front almost 90,000 people. Most players involved in football, dream and aspire to the chance of playing footy at the elite level.

People in this town live and breathe AFL from a young age. Football is part of Victoria’s DNA.

Whether you play footy in the backyard or at school, read articles online about footy, spend hours picking a fantasy team or just watching and supporting your footy team play on the weekend, footy is without a doubt, a part of who we are.

Yet Mason, Jason and Jonathan have all taken different paths to get to where they are now.

They haven’t had the chance to watch an AFL Grand Final live or do the things we do when the footy season is on, but the trio all have something in common with the rest of us, they all love the game as much as we do.

While it is important to support the players in our own backyard, it is also important to encourage athletes from across the globe to choose AFL, because I believe it is the greatest sport in the world.

Also, in this week’s Footy Record, we meet the Senior Interleague squad.

There is a great deal of experience in the squad with previous Barry Priest medal winners in the initial squad as well a host of big-name former AFL players.

Spearheaded by St Albans star Tim Jenkins and Werribee Districts champion Matt Dean, the squad looks to be in good hands.

Senior coach Anthony Eames and the squad have begun training for the match against Ballarat at Whitten Oval, on May 21.

I hope everyone in the region can get to the game, it is going to be a fantastic day of football.

See you at the footy.

CALLAN Ward certainly hasn’t forgotten where he has come from.

The GWS captain has become one of the stars of the AFL, but that doesn’t mean he has forgotten his days at the Spotswood Football Club, where he fell in love with the game.

“It all started back in Auskick,” Ward said.

“I remember I loved it and I also remember losing most weeks and coming second last in the competition.

“Most of all I remember playing footy alongside my best mates, which was the most important part.”

Ward said he had always dreamt of playing on the biggest stage, but never thought playing footy full time would be a realistic option for him.

“In Under-16’s, I managed to make it into the Western Jets’ development squad, that’s when I took footy more seriously.

“I then made the final squad which I wasn’t expecting and then I was picked in the Vic squad, I played out the rest of the year and then I got drafted.”

The talented midfielder was selected with pick 19 in the 2007 draft to the Western Bulldogs.

Fast forward nine years and Ward is the co-captain of the GWS Giants, is a best and fairest winner, has an All-Australian honour and is about to play his 150th game.

That milestone will be the furthest thing from his mind as he runs through the banner on Saturday night.

However, despite the Giants leader focusing on the prospects of playing finals footy for the first time, he says he has taken the time to reflect on his career so far.

“Playing 150 games in the AFL is very surreal,” Ward said.

“When I started playing at the Bulldogs, guys were entering their eighth and ninth years. I was playing with Rob Murphy and Matthew Boyd, who were my heroes and now I am at that same stage, it is really strange to me.”

The Giants have started the season strongly, winning four of their six matches, including a massive victory over Hawthorn, last weekend.

The 26-year-old said while the positive start to the 2016 was good, his team wasn’t getting ahead of themselves.

“People want to play finals and want to win premierships, I’m more about the cliché of playing one week at a time,” Ward said.

“It is an even competition.

“You have to keep winning games, there is no guarantee you will play finals.

“We just to win games and improve week to week and in the 11 wins from last year and play more consistent footy, ultimately that would put us in contention.”

Ward said he was also relishing his role as co-captain of the Giants.

“Being captain is not something I jumped at, I turned it down at the start,” Ward said.

“But I took it on, it put me out of my comfort zone, it has been a massive learning curve, but I enjoy helping my team-mates.”

Before the season started, Ward also signed a five year contract extension with GWS, making him a Giant at least until the end of 2021.

“By that stage I would have been playing with the Giants for 10 years,” Ward said.

“I have loved my time here, I have loved it since I first walked in, from the coaches, to the staff to the players, everyone involved with this club are great people.

“I enjoy coming to work and I extended the contract because I can see the potential in this list.”

WRFL NEWS

THE Western Region Football League has announced a 53-person Interleague squad ahead of next month’s Community Championship match against Ballarat.

Spearheaded by two-time Barry Priest medallist Tim Jenkins, and individual winners Matt Dean and Wayde Skipper the team is aiming to make amends after last year’s Interleague loss.

Former AFL champions Brendan Fevola, Brian Lake and Mark Williams have also been picked.

In total, players from 12 different clubs across Division 1, 2 and 3 were named in the initial squad.

WRFL reigning Division 1 premiers Deer Park leads the way with 13 selections.

Training for the May 21 showdown with Ballarat began on Wednesday night, with preparations continuing to build over the next two weeks.

Senior coach Anthony Eames said he and his coaching team were impressed with the talent they assembled.

“We have received some strong support from within the competition,” he said.

“When you have a squad of the best players from the league you are going to be a very strong team, not matter what league are from.

“The players are committed, which is all we can ask for.”

Eames said with the game less than a month away the coaching panel was getting excited about the match.

“We are all fired up, but it is important we stay focussed until the game and we get what we want out of the weeks leading up to the match,” he said.

Eames said the squad would be cut to 25 a week before the match.

Ballarat have also announced a 38-man senior squad for the match, including former Western Bulldogs player Brett Goodes.

Ballarat’ senior Interleague coach Shaun O’Loughlin said he was pleased with the squad he had been able to put together after three rounds of football.

The WRFL will take on Ballarat at Whitten Oval on May 21. The Under-19 match will be played at 11.45am and the Senior match is at 2.30pm.

5 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

Albanvale’s new recruit Jonathan Showman. Picture: KRISTEN ALEBAKIS

LAST year Jonathan Showman started playing footy in Oklahoma in the United States of America, this year he is lining up with the Albanvale in the Western Region Football League.

He had never heard of Aussie Rules, let alone seen a game more than 12 months ago, yet the athletic American has not only fallen in love with Australia’s favourite sport, but decided to make the move to Melbourne to immerse himself in our culture with the hope of improving his game.

“I started playing Australian rules football in a burgeoning league in America and I really fell in love with the sport,” Showman said.

“Objectively speaking it is really the best sport in the world…I think it is Australia’s greatest export.”

The 23-year-old was playing for the Tulsa Buffaloes in 2015 and after finishing college he decided to travel, first stop being Australia to play some footy.

“I was at a point in my life where I finished college and I wanted to travel and I wanted to see Australia and our assistant coach at the time was an Australian citizen,” Showman said.

“He was on a sabbatical from his job and living in Oklahoma, he was coaching us and I wanted to go to Australia and I knew there was some opportunity to hook up with a community club in Australia.

“I wanted to improve my game as well and he was from this area and he hooked me up with the Albanvale Cobras.”

The league in America stretches across the entire country, with some states also having a metro competition, very much like the WRFL.

Showman says the league attracts high calibre athletes including ex-college NFL players, but says because the population hasn’t grown up with AFL, the skill level isn’t that high.

“They play a lot more off the ground than they would off the boot,” he said.

“The game here even at the community level is a much more methodical, it is a much more elegant game.

“Even Australians that are older and less athletic, because they have that ingrain skill level, can take on

some of the better teams in America right now and really give them a run for their money.

“One of the reasons besides wanting to see Australia is I wanted to play with some Australians that have been playing the game.

“I figured, immersing myself among them would be a great way to hone my skills level and show up some Americans.”

Since being in Melbourne, Showman has jumped straight into the competition, playing two reserves matches and on the weekend made his debut in the seniors.

“I am really loving it,” he said.

“The club has been great, what I love about footy is the comradery of not only the guys on the team, but the entire community around the club.”

Showman said one of his role models is Collingwood footballer Mason Cox.

Cox, who has a similar story to Showman, in that he hadn’t played the game until two years ago, is making his mark on the AFL.

“Seeing what Mason Cox has been able to do what he has done is incredible,” Showman said.

“He comes from Oklahoma and he played basketball back home, he is a freak athlete, he is a huge guy.

“For Americans that are a little bit interested in this game he is an inspiration.”

St Albans coach Fabian Carelli leads his team to victory for the first time this season. Picture: KRISTEN ALEBAKIS

IT was not exactly a tipster’s nightmare week for round four of the WRFL. The winners were Hoppers Crossing, St. Albans, Deer Park and Werribee Districts with the closest margin 26-points.

As I have not seen four teams live this year so far, it is difficult to get a really good read on form.

Round 5 will sort out a few, or at least I hope it will.

The big question is about the Grand Final re-match between Werribee Districts and Deer Park at John McLeod Reserve.

The 2015 Grand Final was an awful game from start to finish.

I have no doubt Werribee Districts is a much better side that they showed on that day, but you have to ask if there are any mental scars from such a humiliating loss.

I think there has to be.

New Werribee Districts coach Paul Chapman was not a part of that day, but I am sure he will make sure the players, officials and supporters who were, put it into perspective - that was the, this is now.

The loss to Albion showed Deer Park is beatable and the Soldier’s Reserve boys know that, and will be up for a re-match. I think they might win.

Altona were very disappointing last week at Hoppers Crossing and while injuries made their task more difficult, they just lacked passion and desire for the footy for mine.

Jayden Post is not going to carry this side over the line week in week out.

Opposition sides are smart enough to make sure they lessen his impact on the final outcome.

That is not rocket science and while they keep that in place they will struggle.

I am not blaming Post for one second, he tries his heart out.

I think Spotswood will beat them this week and I say that without being convinced the Woodsmen are a contender this year.

I was just so disappointed by what Altona dished up last week I can’t see them winning.

Wyndhamvale was good for a half last week but dropped off and were over run in the second half, and that might be their biggest challenge this season.

Hoppers Crossing will be too good on Saturday.

Sunshine host St Albans in the most intriguing game of the round and also the hardest to tip.

I am looking forwards to seeing Sunshine in the next few weeks as I think they might be the smoky of the competition. At home I can’t tip against them.

ALTONA SCORE UPSET WIN AGAINST HOPPERSBy CONNOR PAIN

Werribee Districts claim its third win of the season after defeating Albion. Picture: CODY BENCH

IN arguably the upset of the season so far, Altona knocked off ladder-leader Hoppers Crossing in a tight and low scoring affair.

The Vikings started slowly, kicking just one goal and six behinds in the first-half.

Despite this, the Warriors were unable to capitalise as Altona’s mixture of a man-on-man defence and zone defence restricted Hoppers Crossing’s usual free flowing and attacking football style.

The visitors added two goals in the third term, but still trailed going into the final term, as the home side maintained its slim lead.

The Vikings took over in the last quarter, booting two goals after the re-start, adding a third soon after.

Altona’s fourth goal sealed the game and prevented a would-be comeback by the home side.

The 7.8. (50) to 6.6. (42) final score line reflected the scrappy nature of the game, and possibly shows what other sides will be required to do in order to defeat the talented Hoppers Crossing side.

Altona will next face Spotswood at home, while Hoppers Crossing will look to maintain its spot on top of the ladder with a win against Wyndhamvale.

Meanwhile, Deer Park now sit third on the ladder after its 13.9. (87) to 8.6. (54) victory over Spotswood.

The game appeared headed for another boil over, as the Woodsmen led by three goals at the first break.

However, 10 goals in the second-half ended the upset bid by Spotswood, with the Lions showing why it could be a contender come finals time.

The 33-point displayed Deer Park ability to fight back, particularly from an early deficit.

Deer Park will look to jump Werribee Districts on the ladder if it is able to win in its battle in Round 5.

A four goal to nil opening term helped the Districts overcome a pesky Albion, downing the Cats by 24-points.

The home side had seven individual goal kickers to Albion’s one, a key as to why Albion weren’t able to mount a serious chance.

Albion will look to regroup this week with the bye.

St. Albans sit just a game outside of the top four after its comprehensive 51-point triumph over Wyndhamvale.

Besnik Kutleshi was the key man up forward for the Saints, booting three majors, with eight other players also adding majors.

The loss leaves Wyndhamvale winless after four rounds, and without a drastic change of fortunes possibly headed to the wooden spoon.

St. Albans will next face close neighbours Sunshine in the final match of Round 5.

CAROLINE Springs and Yarraville- Seddon played the match of the round at the weekend.

After a ground switch, the Lakers played host to the Eagles at Town Centre Oval, with the Eagles soaring to a memorable four-point victory, claiming the inaugural Gambling’s Not A Game Cup.

The game started off strong with the Eagles getting an early jump in the first term kicking five goals to two, to lead by 18-points at quarter time.

The Lakers came out firing on all cylinders in the second kicking three goals, though their inaccurate kicking cost them dearly. Their five minors for the quarter proving vital in the end.

The third was a carbon copy of the first as they Eagles yet again came out firing kicking four goals of their own with the Lakers only managing a single point to lead by 29 points going into the last.

Typical of the trend of the game, the last was a copy of the second as the Eagles faied to make an impact.

The Eagles only managed one goal for the quarter, which saw their lead slowly fade away.

The Lakers managed to pile on 5.3 and looked headed to for victory, but fell agonisingly short.

Meanwhile, the wheels seem to have fallen off at Albanvale since they have returned from their bye a fortnight ago, as they played Glenorden at Heathdale Oval.

The result saw the Cobras lose by 133-points.

Led by Bailey James who had a day out with eight majors, the Hawks started the game off with a flurry.

The Cobras managed to only lose the second term by one point, as both teams kicked two goals for the quarter. Though the third was anything but pretty as the Hawks amassed a 15.16 second half to the Cobras 3.1.

North Footscray faced off against local rivals West Footscray at Hansen Reserve.

The Devils started the game off slowly only kicking five goals in the first quarter.

The Roosters got on the board in the second quarter, but the damage was done, after the Devils kicked nine goals.

Led by Sam Kater who kicked a bag of 10, the Devils ran away with it in the third kicking another seven goals to the Roosters one to blow the margin out to 129-points. Though the margin was set up in the last as the Devils showed no mercy kicking an astonishing 37.26 for the game to run out 225-point victors.

21 WRFL FOOTY RECORDDIVISION TWO

GLEN Orden have scored its first win for the season after defeating Albanvale at Heathdale Oval by 40-points on Saturday.

The first quarter saw the Cobras hopeful they could stay in the contest as they led by two points heading into the first break.

However it was one way traffic after the break, with Glen Orden taking control of the match causing Albanvale to play catch-up football for the rest of the match.

The gap continued to widen as the match went on, with the margin getting bigger in the final quarter thanks to the Hawks scoring five goals to none.

Ange Messina was the Cobras sole goal-kicker, kicking four.

Hawk Troy Smith also booted four goals for the match.

Glen Orden had six other goal kickers on their team, including William Old, who booted two.

Talented Hawks player Fredrick Supatan was able to keep control of the play, and continue to move the ball into their forward line.

Supatan ball movement was critical in their win, he was clearly one of Glen Orden’s best players.

The Hawks were all smiles when they left the field after their win, eager to sing their club song for the first time in 2016.

Across the western suburbs, the other teams were playing hard and fast footy, whilst Manor Lakes had their bye.

At the Town Centre Oval, in Caroline Springs, the Lakers suffered its second loss for the year, after a close game against the Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

The Lakers had 20 shots on goal, but only converted five of those shots.

The Eagles proving to be too good, winning 9.6. (60) to 5.14. (44).

In the local derby at Hansen Reserve, North Footscray showed West Footscray just the type of team they, keeping its unbeaten record this season

The final score was North Footscray 28.25. (193) to West Footscray 3.4. (22).

In Round 5 action, Caroline Springs will make the drive to Robert Bruce Oval, where they are keen to take on Albanvale.

North Footscray will be aiming to keep its winning form with a win over Manor Lakes at Howqua Reserve.

Glen Orden are set to take on West Footscray at Shorten Reserve while Yarraville have the bye.

DIVISION 3 – ROUND WRAPSENIORS

SHARKS OUTMUSCLE GALLANT BRAYBROOKBy WILL ZWAR

SANCTUARY Lakes shot up to second spot on the ladder, after a tough 12-point victory against a strong Braybrook side at Featherbrook Reserve on Saturday.

Round 4 kicked off with the Brookers kicking with the wind, and taking a 14-point lead heading into quarter time.

But, the Sharks showed that they too would use the scoring end as best they could, piling on four of their own goals in the second term to take a slender five point lead into the main break.

An enthused Braybrook outfit, determined to score their first win of 2016, responded in the third term with three goals, to again take back the lead, to put themselves in a winning position with a one goal break with just a quarter of football to play, putting them in a winning position with a quarter to play.

However, Sanctuary Lakes proved too strong in the end, running away with six final quarter goals to win by a comfortable 24-points.

Michael Hall played a fantastic game which saw him listed in the best. He kicked three important goals.

Steven Narelic also chipped in with three goals for the Sharks, while Paul Cutajar-Milosev and Manuel Reardon kicked a pair each for Braybrook.

However, it was Christopher Best, in fine form this year, who was the most influential player on the ground.

In round four’s remaining games, Tarneit continued its winning run at the expense of North Sunshine, who despite five goals from Anthony Fawcus, were run over in the second half by the Titans.

Parkside proved too dominant in the Magpie match, as they obliterated Laverton, outscoring Laverton’s game score in each of the four quarters to win by 141-points.

Finally, North Sunshine, led by Robert Greto with nine goals, pulled away from Wyndham Suns to win by 22-points.

In round five, Sunshine Heights will look at ending Tarneit’s winning run, as they travel to Wootten Road Reserve.

Meanwhile, another high quality clash will see Newport fresh from the bye, hosting Sanctuary Lakes and aiming to add to their extraordinary percentage.

Wyndham will be aiming to rebound against Laverton after putting up a solid effort for three quarters.

Finally, Braybrook will hope to go one better and take their first win in 2016 as they host North Sunshine, while Parkside has the bye.

DIVISION 3 – ROUND WRAPRESERVES

FOUR rounds into the season and the WRFL Division ladder is starting to take shape with three teams currently undefeated.

The Wyndham Suns, Tarneit and the dominant Parkside all recorded wins on the weekend to solidify their title chances and separate themselves from the pack.

It’s beginning to look like a highly competitive race to the 2016 flag as only percentage separates the Suns and Tarneit, with Parkside yet to have a bye.

They held onto top spot with a solid eight goal victory over a defiant Laverton. The Magpies fought hard all day, keeping within a goal until half time and trailing by an attainable five goals at three quarter time.

Unfortunately for Laverton, their opponents kept them to a single major in the final stanza as Parkside glided to a comfortable four points.

Mark Folwell was impressive once again, kicking four goals and he was backed up by the same tally from David Orchard.

In the losing side, Jamie Bublenik booted three and Manni Hatzigiakoumis performed admirably.

Tarneit were solid in their 60 point win against the struggling Roadrunners, with the contest a foregone conclusion by half time.

With percentage potentially playing a vital role later in the year, Tarneit will be disappointed with their accuracy in front of goal, finishing on 11 goals and 16 behinds.

The third team with a perfect record were never really challenged as Wyndham bested Sunshine Heights on Saturday afternoon.

Christopher Neville kept in touch with the leaders in the goal-kicking competition, slotting five of Wyndham’s 12 for the day.

Starring throughout the match alongside Neville was Jayden Tandy with two goals and Tom Krpan continuing his red hot form in 2016.

Krpan has featured in the bests in all three matches so far this season, displaying his value to the Suns game plan. Sunshine Heights were led by Michael Hatzistavrou who fought hard to keep his side within striking distance.

Next week they will face Laverton in what is sure to

be a fiery encounter against a team that cannot be taken lightly.

If Wyndham want to maintain a top four position in the coming weeks, they will need to win and win by big margins.

In the final game of the round, Sanctuary Lakes demolished cellar dwellers Braybrook to the tune of 99 points.

The wooden spoon favourites could only manage one goal for the match as they suffered another heavy defeat.

The Sharks were ruthless as they kept the Bombers scoreless until the third quarter and much like Tarneit were inaccurate, kicking 14.22.

UMPIRES CORNER

37 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

DIVISION 3 – SENIORSBryan Martyn Oval – Reserves 12pm, Seniors 2:15pm

AS we look around the grounds throughout the WRFL it is obvious that football is a sport for young people. The number of older footballers seems to be quite small.

Instead of pulling on the boots and getting out on the field and chasing leather, those who are older are finding roles at clubs such as coaches and team managers.

It is interesting to know that quite a few older footballers are still involved in the playing side of the game through the expanding Superules Competition.

The Williamstown Superules Club based at Croft Reserve, Altona North, fields four competitive teams every second Sunday and boasts more than 100 playing members.

Umpiring is another avenue that allows former footballers to stay involved in the game.

Although not everyone’s cup of tea, umpiring can be a long-lasting commitment. Old-timers may remember the names of Bob Madigan, Glenn Thompson, Alan Clough, Harold Mason and Eric Knight who all began as local footballers before deciding to take up umpiring.

In Season 2016 we see some of our well-known older umpires having started as players before moving into the world of umpiring. Some had lengthy local football careers while others had only a short time as footballers until they made the switch.

Nowadays we see a large group of youngsters combining their junior football career with some umpiring. Most of our WRFL clubs will have at least one of their junior players taking charge of junior matches on Sundays or on Saturday morning’s. Who fits into this category at your club?

Although it’s fantastic that so many young people, both male and female, are taking up the challenge to become umpires, it’s also great to see that the so-called ‘old timers’ can still be involved. Bruce Pain, Phil Henderson, Paul Battaglia, Leo Keating, Rene van Kuyk,

Terry O’Donnell all hold positions of responsibility within the local umpiring association. May they all have many more years of service, commitment and enjoyment.

There may indeed be a change in the wind.

LAWS OF THE GAME – QUIZ #5

Last week’s question:

Player A is reported for abusive language by the field umpire, shown a yellow card and is sent off the field for 15 minutes. Later in the game the same player is reported for attempted striking. What happens next?

The correct answer was (OPTION B). Player A is shown a red card and is sent from the field for the rest of the game. (See Law 20.3)

This week’s question:

Team A has just scored a behind and an opposition player is preparing to kick the ball back into play. A player from Team A is standing within one metre of the goal square. After being told by the field umpire to clear the area, the player continues to stand adjacent to the goal square. What happens next?

(a) The field umpire awards a free kick to Team B and a fifty metre penalty from the kick-off line.

(b) The field umpire awards a free kick to Team A and a fifty metre penalty from the kick-off line.

(c) The field umpire halts play until the player from Team A moves away at least five metres from the goal square.

Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week’s WRFL Footy Record.

THREE FROM THREE FOR WERRIBEE DISTRICTSBy ASH BOLT

Deer Park got some revenge on Spotswood after their Round 1 defeat, with victory at the weekend. Picture: KRISTEN ALEBAKIS

WERRIBEE Districts picked up their third win in a row after beating the Yarraville Seddon Eagles by 51-points at Price Reserve.

Both teams struggled early with the windy conditions, kicking only six goals between them in the first half as Werribee Districts took a 13-point margin into the main break.

The Tigers extended their lead to 27-points after a four goal to two third quarter before the game came to life in the last term.

Werribee Districts came out firing after the three quarter time break and their quick ball movement saw them pile on seven goals to take home the 51-point win.

Mading Atem was best on ground for the Tigers effectively using his athleticism in the ruck, while Trent Donnon and Lachlan Rainbow were solid through the midfield.

Aaron Law and Alexander Psarros were the leading goal kickers for Werribee Districts with three goals apiece.

Liam Murray and Benjamin Wagland were the standouts for Yarraville Seddon, while Lachlan Huell was the Eagles’ only multiple goal scorer with two majors.

Deer Park also picked up their third win from as many matches with a 63-point win over Spotswood, the team that beat them in last year’s grand final.

After an even first quarter the Lions took advantage in the second term, kicking five goals to none for a 31-point lead at half time.

Spotswood couldn’t make a dint in the lead during the third quarter before Deer Park finished the game with another five goal to none quarter to score a 63-point win.

Tyson Maiava led the way for the Lions with four goals while Rusiate Komaitai added three of his own. Charlie Bettiol and Grant Williams were the best for Spotswood.

In the other game of the round, Hoppers Crossing held on for a 12-point win against Altona in a back and forth match at Hogans Road Reserve.

Both teams led for periods of the game before the Warriors managed to push the margin out to 30-points at three quarter time.

Altona kept Hoppers Crossing scoreless in the last term, but could only kick two goals from eight scoring shots and ended up suffering back-to-back losess.

Brayden Kitchen kicked four for the Warriors, while Matthew Wright played well for the Vikings with two goals.

Round 5 sees Altona and Spotswood try to get back onto the winners list when they play at Grant Reserve.

Deer Park and Werribee Districts meet in a top of the table clash at John McLeod Oval and Yarraville Seddon play Hoppers Crossing at Yarraville Oval.

POWER CRUISE TO VICTORY AGAINST FALCONSBy NICK GALEA

Werribee Districts and Albion went head-to-head at the weekend. Picture: CODY BENCH

NEWPORT Power remain at the top of the Under-19 Division 2 ladder.

The Power celebrated Tom Beard’s 100th game in style with a comfortable 96-point win over a trying Wyndhamvale side at Wyndhamvale South Oval.

Considering the blustery conditions, the aerial skills displayed by both sides was a strong feature of the game.

Newport dominated the first quarter with countless inside 50s but inaccuracy and the wind restricted them to only 3.6. (24) at the first break.

Decision making was a major issue for Wyndhamvale as they struggled to get the ball past the centre.

In the second quarter Wyndhamvale were able to get back into the game having good passages of play, but their inability to win the centre clearances didn’t allow them the best entries inside 50 with many forced into the pockets.

The Power slammed three consecutive majors to end the half 38-points up.

Newport put the foot down in the third term with the breeze adding five goals to a solitary behind to increase the margin to 73-points at the final break.

The terms main highlight was the one-two pass between Mohammed Abouzeid and Chehab El-Dannani, with the former finishing off the play by nailing a major from 35 metres.

Newport’s quality ball use was on display in the last quarter as they broke through the corridor, gifting Youssef El Hawli two goals.

Mitchell Taleb also kicked two last quarter goals, he ended the game with four goals next to his name.

Wyndhamvale were able to pull the margin back as Jayme Gilmore got his second after a dash through the centre.

For Wyndhamvale, Gilmore was brilliant for the home side slotting two goals as well as several contested possessions.

Jordan Montalto, Thobey Burgio and Zak Mills all stood up in what was a tough day at the office.

In an even team performance, Newport’s best player was Jehad Haddara who booted four goals.

Chehab El-Dannani continued his early season form and Tyler Johnston featured strongly in the second half.

The other Round 4 result had Werribee Districts running out 33-point winners over Albion at Soldiers Reserve, 9.9. (63) to 3.12. (30) with the margin gradually increasing at every quarter.

For Werribee, Cameron Keenan and Scott Woods were among the best.

Albion’s Connor McPherson and Aiden Elkington were strong contributors with Ahmed Mesto, Brandon Reid and Bradley Jones the goal kickers.

Round 5’s fixture has Newport Power up against Sanctuary Lakes at Bryan Martyn Oval and Wyndhamvale face Werribee Districts at Soldiers Reserve.
