    1/1

    4.  Fertilizer management

Fertilizers are usually used for agricultural purposes in the catchment area of River des Creoles.

This can result in aquatic weed growth and the control of the latter is important for the following

    reasons:

    (i)  Such plants are aesthetically unpleasant.

(ii)  They kill fishes due to excessive removal of oxygen from the water.

    (iii)

They produce quiet water areas and hence providing ideal conditions for mosquito

     breeding.

Hence, the use of water soluble fertilizers is recommended and it is applied at a minimum of 25%

reduction from the current use. This will reduce the risk of eutrophication in the river.

    Other basic control approaches include:

    (i)  Mechanical control which involves the use of motor-driven underwater weed cutters.

(ii)  Cultural control and habitat alteration which involves manipulation of aquatic environment

    to control aquatic weeds.

    5.  Incorporating measures into local planning policies

The authorities concerned should play a key role in incorporating best management practices

including the land use planning of the catchment, policies and structure plans.
