Awards  Day  Ceremony  Barshinger  Center  for  Musical  Arts

    American  Studies     Faculty  Representative   Dennis  Deslippe     John  A.  Andrew  III  Award  in  History  and  American  Studies  -­‐  The  John  A.  Andrew  III  Award  was  established  by  the  family,  colleagues,  and  friends  of  Professor  Andrew,  who  taught  American  History  at  Franklin  &  Marshall  from  1973  until  his  death  in  2000.    Professor  Andrew  also  led  in  the  establishment  of  American  Studies  at  the  college  and  was  deeply  involved  in  the  Lancaster  community.    The  award  recognizes  a  rising  senior  in  History  or  American  Studies  who  epitomizes  the  commitment  to  scholarship  and  service  that  Professor  Andrew  exemplified.  

Susan  V.  Spina  ‘17  The  J.  Fred  and  Nancy  B.  Sener  Prize  -­‐  is  presented  to  a  student  who  has excellence  in  American  Studies  as  deemed  by  the  faculty  of the  department.    The  award  is  given  by  Marsha  Sener  Schuyler  in  honor  of  her  parents.

Anthropology Faculty  Representative   Michael  Billig   The  Charles  H.  Holzinger  Anthropology  Award  -­‐  is  presented  to  a  student  who  achieves  high  scholastic  standing  in  the  department.    The  award  is  sponsored  by  the  Anthropology  Department  to  honor  Professor  Emeritus Charles  Holzinger.

 Joanna  S.  Radov  ‘16   Art  and  Art  History   Faculty  Representative   Linda  Aleci  &  Rick  Kent   The  Robert  M.  and  Elizabeth  Hatton  Landis  Art  Award  -­‐  is  presented  to  the  graduating  senior  majoring  in  Art  who  has  demonstrated  a  high  degree  of  leadership  and  ability  in  the  field  of  art  as  well  as  excellence  as  a  student  of  art  and  art  history.

Rakeb  T.  Lemma  ‘16   The  Roger  and  Elizabeth  Thompson  Award  in  Animal  Behavior  -­‐      This  award  is  given    to  a  graduating  senior  majoring  in  the  Biological  Foundations  of  Behavior  Program  in  recognition  of  her  or  his  enthusiasm,  aptitude,  independence  and  commitment  to  the  study  of  animal  behavior  as  represented  in,  for  example,  the  fields  of  ethology,  comparative  psychology,  and  behavioral  ecology.  

Jennifer  M.  Friedman  ‘16   Kathryn  M.  Rogers  ‘16   Biology Faculty  Representative   Mark  Olson   The  Carl  &  Ellen  Pike  Biology  Senior  Award  -­‐  This  award,  funded  by  Ellen  and  Carl  Pike,  is  presented  to  a  senior  biology  major  or  majors  who  have  achieved  an  outstanding  academic  record  in  biology,  completed  an  excellent  two-­‐semester  independent  research  project,  and  who  has  been  accepted  into  a  graduate  or  professional  program  for  an  advanced  degree  in  the  biological  or  biomedical  sciences.

Zenia  R.  Tangri  ‘16 Professor  Brian  D.  Steffy,  Ph.D.  Memorial  Award  -­‐  Given  to  a  full-­‐time  F&M  student  who  has  performed  meritoriously  in  a  human  resource  management  or  organization  studies  course  at  the  College.

Chemistry Faculty  Representative   Ken  Hess   The  American  Chemical  Society  Division  of  Analytical  Chemistry  Award  -­‐  Presented  to  a  student  who  has  completed  the  third  under-­‐graduate  year  and  who  has  displayed  interest  in  and  aptitude  for  a  career  in  analytical  chemistry.  

Tianjiao  “Jessie”  Shi  ‘17    

The  American  Chemical  Society  Division  of  Inorganic  Chemistry  Award  -­‐  given  to  a  student  whose  future  plans  include  a  career  in  chemistry.    It  is  presented  to  a  student  has  demonstrated  excellence  in  inorganic  chemistry  at  the  undergraduate  level  based  on  any  combination  of  research,  coursework,  or  motivation,  interest,  dedication  as  defined  by  their  nominating  institution.

The  American  Chemical  Society  Division  of  Organic  Chemistry  Award  -­‐  presented  to  an  outstanding  student  in  the  two-­‐semester  organic  chemistry  sequence  that  intends  to  major  in  chemistry.    The  student  must  have  earned  grades  of  A  in  each  semester  and  must  have  ranked  in  the  top  10%  of  the  class  each  semester.

The  American  Institute  of  Chemists  Award  -­‐  Presented  to  a  student  in  Chemistry  who  has maintained  high  academic  standing,  and  possesses  the  potential to  become  a  successful  chemist  or  chemical  engineer.   Ilia  Kevlishvili  ‘16   The  Theodore  Alexander  Saulnier,  Jr.  Prize  -­‐  Awarded  to  a  Chemistry  student  demonstrating  an  especially  searching  mind  in  probing  the  frontiers  of  the  unknown.  

Daniel  E.  Levin  ‘16    The  Richard  C.  Schiedt  Trust  for  Graduate  Study  Prize  -­‐  an  honor  that  goes  to  a  student  who  has  been  accepted  at  a  university  for  postgraduate  work  in  Chemistry  or  Biology.

The  Fred  A.  Snavely  Research  Award  -­‐  Presented  to  a  senior  chemistry  major  that  has  previously  participated  in  the  summer  research  program.    The  award  will  support  the  student's  future  research  experiences.        

Daniel  E.  Levin  ‘16 Southeastern  Pennsylvania  Section,  American  Chemical  Society  Award  -­‐  Presented  to  a  student  exhibiting  academic  excellence  in  the  study  of  Chemistry.

W.  E.  Weisgerber  Chemistry  Award  -­‐  Consists  of  a  classic  volume  in  Chemistry  presented  to  an  outstanding  senior  chemistry  major  who  plans  to  undertake  graduate  study  in  that  field.  

Jordan  R.  Alter  ‘16 Willig  Pentathlon  Chemistry  Prize  -­‐  Awarded for the best record on an examination in five courses in Chemistry.

Ilia  Kevlishvili  ‘16 The  Annie  and  Ernest  Weibrecht  Award  -­‐  Awarded  to  a  rising  senior  of  high  academic  standing  majoring  in  a  natural  science  with  a  significant  chemistry  focus.    

Shomith  D.  Mondal  ‘17   Classics Faculty  Representative   Gretchen  Meyers   The  Robert  J.  Barnett  Translation  Prize  in  Latin  Poetry    -­‐  Awarded  to  a  student  who  creates  the  best  translation  of  Latin  verse  in  an  annual  competition.

Theodore  M.  Wood  Prize  -­‐  awarded for the best essay submitted upon a selected subject in Economics.

  English Faculty  Representative   Judith  Mueller   The  American  Academy  of  Poetry  Prize  -­‐  Awarded  for  the  best  poem,  regardless  of  length,  subject,  or  form.    

Delia  Pepper  ‘16 Jerome  Irving  Bank  Memorial  Short  Story  Prize  -­‐  Established  in  2003  by  F&M  alumnus  Lawrence  Henry  Bank,  Esq.  ‘65  to  honor  and  preserve  the  memory  of  his  late  brother,  Jerome  Irving  Bank,  Esq.  Jerome  Bank,  a  graduate  of  Hobart  and  the  New  York  University  School  of  Law,  and  who  always  wanted  to  be  a  writer,  but  died  before  realizing  his  dream.  The  award  is  given  to  the  best  work  of  short  fiction.

Cassandra  J.  Garison  ‘18 The  Arleen  “Cookie”  Faust  Prize  For  Humor  Writing  -­‐  This  award  is  meant  to  celebrate  Arleen  "Cookie"  Faust,  the  beloved  academic  coordinator  for  the  English  department  at  Franklin  &  Marshall  College  from  1985  to  2012.  A  longtime  employee  of  the  College,  she  possessed  a  wealth  of  experience  and  told  fabulous,  hilarious  stories.

Mia  F.  Samuels  ‘17 William Uhler Hensel Junior Prize –  Awarded  to  a  member  of  the  sophomore  or  junior  class  for  the  best  essay  submitted  as  a  term  paper  in  English  or  American  Literature.  

Dustin  G.J.  Smith  ‘17    William  Uhler  Hensel  Senior  Prize  -­‐  Awarded  to  a  member  of  the  Senior  Class  for  the  best  essay  submitted  as  a  term  paper  in  English  or  American  Literature.    

Anh  P.  Nguyen  ‘16 Elisabeth  Doreen  Shaw  Russell  Award  in  Creative  Nonfiction  –  This  award  is  meant  to  acknowledge  the  achievement  and  passing  of  a  great  student,  a  great  teacher,  and,  above  all,  a  great  person.    

Lucy  M.D.  Kirkman  ‘17 French   Faculty  Representative   Nadra  Hebouche   Harry  L.  Butler  Prize  for  Study  in  France  -­‐  Supports  outstanding  students  of  French  and  students  combining  extensive  study  of  French  with  that  of  another  discipline.  Grant  to  enable  student  to  participate  in  Junior  Year  Abroad  for  study  in  France.
