Increasing Opportunities for Early-Stage Entrepreneurs

In the search for entrepreneurs with innovative technology ideas that can

address a problem affecting their country or region, the Global Innovation

through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative has implemented

the GIST Tech-I Competition, attracting close to 200 teams from the

Middle East, Africa, and Central and South East Asia. Among them was

CardioDiagnostics, a Lebanese startup founded by Ziad Sankari. Ziad lost

his father at the age of 17 to a heart attack, which inspired him to create a

medical device that monitors cardiac patients outside the hospital around the

clock. This idea earned him a top prize of the competition awarded at the

Second Global Entrepreneurship Summit on December 3-5, 2011 in Istanbul,Turkey. CardioDiagnostics has been given a strong start for a global success

with $20,000 in seed funding, hands-on training with serial entrepreneurs

and business mentors, global media exposure by MSNBC and Wired

Magazine, on a trip to Silicon Valley and participation in the MIT Global

Startup Workshop.

Transforming Technology

CRDF Global has trained more than 300 technology transfer managers

managers and assisted eight leading research universities with

establishing technology transfer offices, which significantly contributed to

the establishment of the local innovation ecosystem. The Programs include

professional skills development seminars, workshops, academia and industry

international conferences, and site visits to the United States for technology

transfer professionals. Similar activities have strengthened the technology

commercialization capabilities of more than 20 research universities of the

Russian Federation.

Accessing U.S. Markets

Since 2005, CRDF Global has implemented more than 20 U.S. travel

programs for close to 90 participants representing dozens of universities,

research institutes and technology companies from Russia, Armenia and

Azerbaijan and collaborated with such prominent U.S. organizations as

MIT, Babson College, Garage Technology Ventures, Plug & Play Incubator,

CleanTech Open and others. Based on the scalable and highly customizable

format of the Innovation U.S. travel programs and existing cache of

experience, best practices and partners, CRDF Global is able to design and

implement results-oriented and cost-effective programs that perfectly fit the

objectives and needs of a diverse range of partner organizations in emerging

markets.

Building Institutional Capacity

Since 2005, CRDF Global has partnered with the Enterprise Incubator

Foundation (EIF), one of the most successful IT-focused technology business

incubators and consulting companies in the Caucasus region, to implement its

Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Program (STEP). With co-funding

from the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, EIF implemented

more than 15 STEP activities including the Business Partnership Grant (BPG)

program, Innovation Forums, cluster seminars, business trainings for the science

community, legal and accounting seminars and matchmaking events. Through

its partnership with CRDF Global, EIF strengthened communication channels

between science and private sectors, gained broader access to the U.S.

business network and scaled up its outreach and programs to non-IT sectors

becoming one of the focal entrepreneurship-support organizations in Armenia

and in the region.

Providing Access to Capital

The ecoFridge, a revolutionary refrigeration system used to transport

perishable products, was developed by a team of Ukrainian scientists

with a U.S. business partner who participated in a CRDF Global research

and development grant competition. CRDF Global provided training and

mentorship to the team to prepare them to effectively pitch the ecoFridge at a

venture forum in Los Angeles, CA. As a result, the team obtained $2.2 million

of follow-on capital investment to develop their business, and EcoFridge is

now being adopted by companies around the world who appreciate its

environmental benefits and cost efficiency.

Organizational Introduction

Microsoft Innovation Center Nepal (hereinafter referred to as MIC Nepal) is a tech center which offers a comprehensive set of programs and services to

foster innovation and grow a s ustainable local software economy. Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) is:

A facility for local software economy engagement, development and outreach, in partnership with and serving local industry, government and

academic constituencies. MIC Nepal creates an environment to give software developers, IT professionals, university students and faculty,

entrepreneurs and governments access to world-class resources. Our current global network of 110 worldwide MICs serves 48 nations includingone in Kathmandu, Nepal.

MIC content and services: While each Center tunes its programs to local needs, they all provide similar content and services designed to

accelerate technology advances and stimulate local software economies through skills building, local innovation and solutions building, and

business acceleration though industry partnerships. A standard list of MIC programs is lis ted below.

MIC offerings focus on at least two (and preferably all) of the following areas:

Building skills and intellectual capital through training courses, employment programs and mentoring experiences covering not only technical

skills but also business skills required to support local entrepreneurs and small ISVs.

Fostering local business growth thru industry partnerships programs on how to work successfully with Microsoft, as well as through the

cultivation of local and regional industry alliances; working with local incubators, technology parks and universities to support ISVs, System

Integrators and Startups on business development activities.

Increasing innovation at the local level through hands-on engagements, such as labs geared toward the interests of ISVs, startups, partners,

students and entrepreneurs (examples include proof of concept, scalability and architectural reviews, interoperability labs, etc.)

Ace Institute of Management is a contemporary, open-minded, conscientious learning centre where students rediscover themselves and learn to be

thoughtful and responsible managers and leaders. In its 15 year history, since its inception in 1999, Ace Institute has established itself as a leading

institution that is living its vision of enhancing capacity of individuals and institutions in Nepal to contribute to the nations development.

Vidhan Rana, Founder & Managing Partner, Biruwa VenturesVidhan completed a bachelors degree in Business Management and Economics from Hope College in Michigan, USA.

After graduation, he joined Whittaker Associates Inc., a market research firm. There, he worked with several state

and local economic development agencies and provided guidance and support to small and medium sized businesses

on issues of employment generation. Vidhan established a research division for Whittaker Associates in Nepal and

founded Biruwa Ventures in July 2011 to support aspiring entrepreneurs. Through Biruwa, Vidhan has mentored over 100

entrepreneurs and invested in three startups.

Saanjib Subba, CEO, National Banking Training InstituteSanjib has over 20 years of experience as a banker and international trainer. He holds an MBA from Webster University

and has received executive education from both the World Bank Institute and Stanford Universitys Graduate School of

Business. Sanjib started his career with ANZ Grindlays Bank and later moved to Bangkok where he was the Executive

Director for Webster University Managing MBA and other Masters level programs. Over the years, Sanjib has

designed and delivered several training programs for the Government of Bhutan, Nepal, Vietnam, as well as NGOs and

corporations in Thailand and Afghanistan.

Anil Shah, CEO, Mega Bank LtdAnil Shah began his career as bank teller at Standard Charted. After rapidly advancing in his career he rose to become

the General Manager of the bank and in 2004, he was appointed as CEO of Nabil Bank the first Nepali CEO of a joint

venture bank in Nepal. While at the Nabil Bank, he doubled the amount of loans and deposits, making it the largest bank

in Nepal. Afterwards, he went on to start a new venture called the Mega Bank, of which he is the CEO. Anil Shah holds a

BBA from George Washington University and an MBA from Faculty Management Studies Delhi.

Sanjay Shah, Co-Founder & Executive Chairman, Finaccess Pvt. Ltd.Sanjay was trained as an engineer in Electronics and Communications and received an MBA in Human Resources

Management from the University of Dallas. He formerly served as Chairman of the Bank of Kathmandu. Nepals decade

long armed conflict, its root causes and the resulting impact on the nation inspired him to co-found Finaccess Hello

Paisa, an innovative interoperable mobile financial services platform in Nepal. Sanjay strongly believes that the private

sector should have a role in working towards reducing poverty and his company works to provide people with tools and

services that can help them achieve their dreams and ambitions.

Suman Shakya, Managing Director, One Planet SolutionsSuman is the Past President of Everest Toastmasters Club, an important hub of a global network that trains people to

become better communicators and leaders. Suman is also the Co-organizer of Startup Weekend Kathmandu, a global

grass root movement promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. Suman is the current Director of Rooster Logic and is

associated with bitarak.com, Digitainment. He is also doing business consultancy and training through Tangent Waves.

Suman completed his Diploma in Foreign Trade and MBA from Calcutta, India, and is he is currently an adjunct faculty of

Marketing at Ace Institute of Management and South Asian Institute of Management.

Sramanendra Shrestha, Executive Director, Business Advantage Ltd.Subu is an MBA graduate from Kathmandu University. Having completed his MBA he joined Buddha Air as Assistant

Manager for Corporate Affairs, where he was responsible for laying the foundation and undertaking Buddha Airs overall

marketing and promotions. At Business Advantage, he heads the Creative Department and supports Client Servicing

and Business Development. Since 1998, Subu has worked with a variety of clients that include; BMW, Hyundai, Toyota,

Yamaha, Philips, Tuborg Beer, Carlsberg Bee r, Jolly Shandy/Lemonade, Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Hotel Yak n Yeti, The

Himalayan Times, Annapurna Post, Nepal Tourism Board, UNICEF. Subu has also won the title of Copywriter of the Year

at Crity Awards 2006 - Nepals highest advertising awards ceremony.

Gaurub Pandey, CEO, Bajra TechnologiesGaurub holds a BS in Computer Science from Brown University. He worked for Cisco Systems for two years as a Software

Engineer until he decided to move back to Kathmandu in 2010. For a short while he was the Senior Software Engineer at

Deerwalk Inc. After this brief stint, he went on and founded Bajra Technologies, where he is their current CEO.

NATALIA PIPIA

Associate Director, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, CRDF GlobalNatalia Pipia develops and oversees Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programs at CRDF Global. She expands and

generates new opportunities with the private sector, foundations, and international organizations that share CRDF

Globals mission of advancing technology entrepreneurship in emerging economies. A critical part of her current position

is developing vision and outreach strategies as well as overseeing a portfolio of programs that source and provide

support to tech companies. She executes several programs, including GIST and VentureOut Initiative, that support

hundreds of early stage entrepreneurs in the Middle East, Africa, Eurasia, South East Asia, and the Caribbean regions by

providing education, technical skills, seed funding, and U.S. market access to entrepreneurs. Natalia advises on policy

and programs that promote all aspects of entrepreneurial ecosystem building. She holds a M.A. in International Relationsfrom the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies ( SAIS), Johns Hopkins University.

Yuritzi Acosta has over five years of experience in international program management. For the last two years, she hasbeen actively engaged in implementing programs focused on entrepreneurship support and working with a diverse

group of entrepreneurs and startups from all over the world. She has helped develop a network of entrepreneurs, angel

and venture investors, incubators, business accelerators, universities and other stakeholders to support these aspiring

Rupesh Krishna Shrestha, Kathmandu University School of ManagementPrior to the current position, Rupesh consulted, researched, and trained for small and medium enterprises,

was a visiting faculty for marketing and entrepreneurship at various business schools in Nepal and had

several years of experience in tradin business. He holds a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from the

University of Nebraska, as well as a Masters in General Management from KUSOM.

Sohan Khatri, CEO, Three H ManagementSohan is a Licensed International Financial Analyst (LIFA) charterholder, an MBA in Finance and Marketing

from Bangalore University and also a civil engineer from the Institute of Engineering (IOE) , Pulchowk. He

has more than 10 years of experince as visiting faculties is some of the renowned business and engineering

colleges in Nepal. He is as an independent director at DCBL bank limited and is also a technical advisor and

consultant at a number of national and international non for profit organizations and engineering projects.

Samar Basnet, Chief Software Architect and Partner, AvionteAvionte is a US based software company that develops ERP solutions for staffing industry. As an architect,

Samar designs and develops the blueprint and defines system qualities and technical standards of the

software. He also coordinates programming projects between the U.S. and Nepal teams. Samar grew up

in Kathmandu and now lives in MInnesota. He earned his Bachelors desgree in statistics, with a minor in

information systesm from St. Cloud State University. Prior to joining Avionte, Samar worked as a Senior

Software Analyst for another software technology provider. He developed an in-depth knowledge of ERP

systems specific to the staffing industry.

Sakar Pudasaini, Founder, KarkhanaSakar is a technologist and an educator. He is the founder of Karthana, a markerspace and education company

based in Kathmandu. The technologist in him sees that the world he lives in is malleable, both in the material

Er. Alok (Kumar) Panday, Director, Strategic Product Development, Braindigit IT SolutionsPandey first started as a developer at Braindigit IT Solutions, one of the major contributors to the global

market in Business Application Development, Enterprise Content Management, Mobile Apps Development

and Collaborative eCommerce Solution. He now works as the Director of strategic product development and

has since successfully executed the launches of SageFrame and AspxCommerce. He is also the president at

Narendra Prajapati, CEO, Bhote Koshi Power Company Pvt. Ltd.Mr. Prajapati is currently the CEO of Bhote Koshi Power Company that operates Upper Bhote Koshi HEP

under the BOOT Agreement with the Government of Nepal. He is also the Treasurer of Independent Power

Producer Association of Nepal. Before moving to hydropower, Narendra was spearheading a real-estate

FIDAN KARIMOVA

Associate Program Manager, GIST InitiativeFidan Karimova joined the CRDF Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation team in October 2012, focusing on media

messaging and communications, but she has been on staff at CRDF Global for three years already, working on client

relationship management, website development, and promotional materials. Fidan has traveled extensively, including living

abroad in China, Italy, and Spain and working for a summer at the UN in Azerbaijan. She also brings her entrepreneurial

spirit to GIST, having started her own painting business and dabbled in environmental fashion design in college.

AMANDA GANT

Associate Program Manager, GIST InitiativeAmanda Gant joined CRDF Global in March 2012, working with international partners to organize startup boot camps

and virtual mentorship programs. Amanda has long had the entrepreneurship bug, selling bracelets on the beach of her

hometown since middle school, an experience that inspired her to study international development with the hope of

empowering others to realize their dreams by starting their own businesses. Amanda supports her local community by

organizing the annual Glover Park Day, which showcases local area businesses and non-profits; she also leads service-

oriented ecotourism trips to Nicaragua to promote travel and cultural exchange.

Mr. Allen Bailochan Tuladhar, CEO, Unlimited Technologies Pvt Ltd.For the past 18 years, Allen has held a number of roles while working in the field of local language computing in the

ICT sector of Nepal. He has contributed to many organizations, including being a representative of Nepal for 10 years

to the Asian Forum for Information Technology. Currently, he is the CEO of Unlimited Technologies and has been

instrumental in driving the Microsoft BizSpark program for Nepal.
