ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Master Sergeant Nan Raphael, flute, has been a member of the U.S. Army Field Band since gradua ting cum laude from Susquehanna University in 1977 with a degree In music education. She currently plays piccolo In the Concert Band and has been featured as a soloist on several major tours In the United States and abroad. She Is also a member of the Field Band's Woodwind Quintet, which performs regularly throughout the Baltimore-Washington area. She has a strong Interest In promoting the piccolo as a solo Instrument, resulting In the establishment of "Duo 8va• and the publishing of articles for the Piccolo Society, the Washington Flute Society, and Band World. In 1991, MSG Raphael was a winner of the Professional Flute Choir Competition at the National Flute Association Convention In Washington, DC. In February, 1995, she was featured In the "Let's Talk Plcc" section of Flute Talk.

Sergeant First Clasa Kerry Willingham, oboe, h as a Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University, a Master of Music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a doctorate In baroque oboe In progress at Washington University In St. Louis. He was a founding member of the Prevailing Winds woodwind quintet and Is currently principal oboist with the U.S. Army Field Band. He has been featured as a soloist with the San Antonio Symphony and on National Public Radio, as well as with the Field Band. SFC Willingham has taught music theory at Morehead State University and was an Instructor of music at Missouri Baptist College In St. Louis, Missouri.

Staff Sergeant Pamelia Henderson, clarinet, holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Denver and a Master of Music degree and Performa n ce Certificate from Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, she was a student of Robert Marcellus and served as his graduate assistant. She taught for two years at Florida State University, while completing her doctoral residency, and Is currently a candidate for that degree. SSG Henderson's orchestral playing includes the Colorado Springs Symphony and the Tallahassee Symphony. Other teachers have Included Clark Brody, Frank Kowalsky, Bil Jackson, Luis Baez, and Ray Klreilis. She has been a member of the Army Field Band since June, 1994.

Sergeant First Clasa Richard Spittel, basaoon, Is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He holds a Certificate In Bassoon from the Preparatory Department of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, a Bachelor of Science In music education from Towson State University, a Master of Music In music education and an Master of Music In bassoon performance from Peabody. He has done postgraduate work at Catholic University In Washington, DC, and Is currently a doctoral candidate In bassoon performance at the University of Maryland. He has performed extensively with many groups In the Baltimore/Washington area and with the Annapolis, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Maryland, and York symphony orchestras. He has been on the faculties at Western Maryland College, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Essex Community College, and Howard Community College. In addition, he was on the administrative staff of the 1982 and 1991 International Double Reed Society conventions and has served on the staff of the Miller-Skinner Ba ssoon Symposium held at Towson State University. In the Field Band, SFC Splttel holds the position of contrabassoonlst and Is the bassoonist with the U.S. Army Field Band Woodwind Quintet.

Staff Sergeant Shella Connor, saxophone, holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Master of Music In saxophone performance from the University of Illinois. While at Illinois, she was a student of Joseph Lulloff and served as his graduate assistant. Her other teachers have included Lynn Klock, Eugene Rousseau, and Griffin Campbell. She has served as saxophone Instructor In the Spring Independent School District In Houston, Texas, and performed with the Houston Chamber Ensemble and Houston Ba llet Orchestra. Since Joining the Field Band In 1991, she has been a featured soloist on alto and baritone saxophones. She Is also a founding member of the Capitol Saxophone Quartet, which won the 1994 Baltimore Chamber Music Competition and was featured at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

Maater Sergeant Daniel Nevlua, trumpet, is a native of Mifllinville, Pennsylvania. He holds a Bachelor of Science in music education from Mansfield State University and a Master of Music from Catholic University of America. He Is an accelerated graduate of the U.S. Army School of Music and has attended the Mannes College of Music. MSG Nevius has been a student of Dr. Edward Sandor, Seymour Rosenfeld, Frank Kaderabek, William Vacchiano, Mel Broiles, Donald Tison, Adel Sanchez, Steven Hendrickson, and Ed Hoffman. He has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, the National Christian Orchestra, the National Orchestral Association in New York, and the Christian Performing Artists Fellowship Orchestra. MSG Nevius Is currently trumpet section leader ) with the Field Band.

Staff Sergeant Kenneth Bell, horn, received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music degree from the Catholic University of America. He has been a horn instructor at the College of Charleston and at Catholic University. As a member of the U.S. Marine Band, he performed regularly at the White House and at the Library of Congress with the Marine Band Woodwind Quintet. SSG Bell was second horn with the Columbus (Ohio) Symphony and a regular substitute with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as principal horn with the Washington Opera, the National Chamber Orchestra, and the Charleston Symphony. Before joining the Field Band, he toured the United States with the Broadway shows Cats and The Music of Andrew Uoyd Webber in Concert. He also toured Europe with West Side Story, which opened In East Berlin on the anniversary of the removal of the Berlin Wall. SSG Bell ls currently· principal horn with the Army Field Band.

Staff Sergeant William Roche, horn, Is a native of Union Springs, New York. He received a Bachelor of Music degree In music education from Andrews University In Berrien Springs, Michigan, and a Master of Music degree In horn performance from Ithaca College. His principal horn teachers include Stephen Lawlis, John Covert, Peter Landgren, and David Bakkegard. He has also studied conducting at the graduate level with Barbara Favorito, John Wakefield, and Robert Spradling. Before joining the Field Band In 1994, he taught Instrumental music for eight years In the public schools of New York and Maryland. SSG Roche has also performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Muter Sergeant Carlyle Weber, euphonium, hails from Ipava, Illinois. He Is section leader and euphonium soloist with the U.S. Army Field Band. He graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Music Education In 1975. He Is currently enrolled at the University of Maryland-College Park, pursuing a masters In performance. His principal teachers Include Ed Livingston at I.S.U.; Arthur Lehman, retired euphonium soloist, U.S. Marine Band; and Milt Stevens, James Kraft, and Linda Harwell, of the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, DC. He has also performed with the Armed Forces Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble at the Midwest Band Clinic In Chicago. MSG Weber Is a member of the Tublsts Universal Brotherhood Association [f.U.B.A.). He has recently completed over twenty years of service with the U.S. Army Field Band.

Sergeant Flrat Clua Jay Norri•, Jr., tuba, was born In Manhattan, New York. Prior to his enlistment In the U.S. Army Field Band, he taught applied low brass and music theory at McNeese State University In Lake Charles, Louisiana. While a member of the McNeese Faculty Brass Quintet, he toured widely as a clinician In the Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana area. He has also performed with the Lake Charles and Arkansas symphony orchestras, the Arkansas Brass Quintet, the Bayou Dixieland Jazz Kings, Harper/Morgan Rodeo Company, and on NBC's "Today" Show. SFC Norris holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Arkansas State University In Jonesboro and a Master of Music degree from McNeese State University. Since joining the Army Field Band, he has been featured as tuba soloist with the Concert Band and performed for the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference held at Fort Myer, Virginia.

Staff Sergeant William Elliott, percuHlon, came to the U.S. Army Field Band In August, 1992: He Is a native of Shelbyville, Kentucky. SSG Elliott received his Bachelor of J Music Education degree from the University of Kentucky and his Master of Music Performance degree from Northern Illinois University. He has performed and recorded with groups such as the Louisville Orchestra, the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rob Parton Jazz Tech Big Band of Chicago, and the Northern Illinois Jazz Ensemble. Prior to joining the Field Band, he was on the faculty of the University of Kentucky as a percussion instructor from 1991 to 1992. He currently teaches percussion at Dundalk Community College In Maryland and serves as percussionist and drum set specialist with the Army Field Band.
