Being a Recess Ambassador has been the best thing ever. For me, this is a once off opportunity and I am grabbing it with both hands, without doubt. I have learned so much by just being part of the Recess Team. One of the most meaningful things I have learned is Love. The Recess Team has so much love for one another. We laugh and enjoy ourselves no matter what we go through.

I am grateful for this opportunity because I know that my team believes in me and my potential. Sabelo and I have worked very hard to make sure that you have the best features and content to read. NOTE: We are new at this, so please bear with us. Lol! Trust me, we are learning to become better editors everyday. So, boys and girls, buckle up as we are about to take you on a wild Recess Roller Coaster!!!

R e c e s s i s w h a t I d o . . .

Through my journey of being a Recess Ambassa-dor, there have been a lot of challenges that I had to deal with. I have learned to be true to myself. Most of all, I have learned what true leadership is about. I didn’t become a Recess Ambassador in order to be popular at school. I did it because I am passionate about it. Most of all, I did it because I really enjoy it. Having to balance school and being a Recess Ambassador has been challenging as it forced me to be disciplined and be organised.

I am hardworking and I know what I want. That is why it wasn’t so hard for me to balance the two. The vision I have for myself and Recess Magazine drove me to push myself and be the best that I can be. Fact is, time was not on my side. But hey, I was always on time because I refuse to be defeated! Happy Festive Season!!!

2011 Rewind

Well 2011 was a staunch year in South Africa and Africa as a whole. If there was any year was pretty tricky it was this year, especially on the political front.

We kicked off the year in a bad light, young people in Tunisia started a protest after one of them set themselves on fire. This protest led to the resignation and fleeing of their President, Ben Ali. It didn’t stop there, Egyptian young people also helped depose their President Hosni Mubarak, who is now facing trial for allegedly hiring insurgent to kill

protestors.

If you thought that wasn’t enough, Africa’s most loudest and ambitious president, the brother leader Muammar Gadaffi seemed to go along the same route as Mubarak, although he

was a bit stubborn. It was because of his stubbornness, coupled with

disorganised rebels and western interference that ultimately led to him dying a gruesome death, after being found hiding in some drainpipes.

From Africa to South Africa where our very own beloved Desmond Tutu threatened to pray for the demise of the ANC, after the government practically refused the Dalai Lama a visa into South

Africa. Many people didn’t get what the whole fuss was about, if the Dalai

Lama really wanted to come to South Africa he should’ve flown to Zimbabwe and simply walked through the border, with no visa needed. It all seemed like the Arch’s prayers were coming true when that very next week Julius Malema was admitted to hospital for allegedly suffering from a flu related sickness.

Speaking about Malema, his suspen-sion from the ANC Youth League (for bringing the party into disrepute) is probably the juiciest part of this year. There has never been a story that is as interesting as this, for political reasons, which will unfold closer to Mangaung next year. Just keep reading Recess.

Outside of politics, the new kid on the block from East-ern Cape has broken records. With her debut album she

has managed to pass the 200 000 cd mark and still going, well done

to her.

Mshoza has turned white *sigh* no comment, I will let

the white people comment on this.

At this time next year both Africa and South Africa will have changed dramatically, and I hope you and I will be alive to share a laugh or shed a tear over it. What-ever happens take care of yourself and enjoy the festive season.

HELLO RECESS PIPSMy name is Lindiwe Sihalngu and I love Recess Magazine. The reason why I would like Recess Magazine to be distributed to my school (Rand Girls High) is because I believe there are a lot of things that my friends and I can learn from the magazine. The magazine is so informative, mo-tivational and inspirational and I feel that it can make a big difference to the lives of the learners at my school.

I would really love it if Re-cess Magazine had a writers column ,for people like me who would love to express their talent in writing es-pecially poetry. This year I am not doing anything as I am only starting varsity next year. I am addicted to Recess Magazine and would like to contrib-ute and do write ups on entrepre-neurship etc. I want to be part of the growth of Recess Magazine by being part of it so that more and more learners can benefit from it.

GOOD MORNINGI just went through the electronic format of recess mag and I have to compliment all of you on work well done. The reason I am sending you this email is because I wanted to find out if you might be having any open or vacant slots for free lance writers. I am currently doing my second year at the University of Johannesburg majoring in Development studies and Pubic Governance. I am inter-ested in writing in the near future and I realized Recess magazine is a relevant platform. I am good at writ-ing. But would like to better improve my skills through Recess magazine. It is an opportunity I feel I need to chase. Please do consider me.Kholekile Mnisi

>>SHOWING FOR RECESS<<

When I first heard of Recess Magazine, I thought I just had to meet the person behind this mag that I wish existed when I was still in high school. I’m all about the youth and their empowerment and I found that this mag caters to the vibrant youth of today. As it turned out, it was a smart young woman behind it all and the smile on my face became broader. Browsing through the mag to me is like having a chat with a friend about anything and everything under the sun. The mag is like the friend who guides you, has fun with you and goes through life with you because he/she understands. Even though I am no lon-ger in high school, it’s a mag that I can still read and think “If only I knew that then”. It’s quite a fun read that is also very informative. Well done to the Recess team! “~ Pearl Modiadie

Say Whhaaatt...?!?My mom texted me “What does IDK, LY & TTYL mean?” I replied: “I don’t know, love u, talk to u later.” Mother: “Ok, I’ll ask your sisters”.

“Girls fall in love with what they hear. Boys fall in love with what they see. That’s why girls wear make up; and boys lie.” - Wiz Kahlifa

Have you ever noticed the word

bed... actually looks like a bed?

FACT ABOUT BOYS: They may be flirting all day, but before they go to sleep, they always think about the girl they truly care about. ♥

Being alone is better than being with people who don’t appreciate your love.

That awkward moment

when you sing the wrong

part of a song with confi-

dence. LOLEST!

Remember that not every time you’re in need of help, someone will be there for you. Sometimes you just gotta stand up and help yourself.

Doubt me? Just wait and see what I’m about to do with my life.

If you don’t like me, someone else will. If

you’re not missing me, someone else is.

If you don’t love me, someone else does.

Don’t sit around and try to change your past when you have your entire future to look forward to.

Sometimes, the hardest things to say are those that come straight from the heart.

If a guy tells you he is different, he is

just like all the others. If he really is different, he’ll show you, not tell you.

Treat your girl right, or

some other guy will. ♥

TEENAGERS: The most misunderstood people on earth. Treated like children & expected to act like adults.

Dear Google, could you sit next to me during an exam? Sincerely, every student

A month after Michael Jackson’s passing I went shopping for a T shirt that would

express my love for Michael Jackson and his music. I eventually found a

T- shirt in Edgars written I love(heart shape) MJ 1958-2009. That was my personal choice but there were many T-shirts that had various other Michael Jackson messages

on them and even one’s with pictures of him.

When I went out looking for this T-shirt I knew that I would find it because there was a trend of wearing T-shirts with a message on them and three years later the trend still exists. In my case it was intentional but does that mean that every person who buys a T-shirt with a message on it is trying to express a thought or particular feeling? Or are some merely trying to grab people’s attention by the absudrity of the message? I say grab at-tention because some of the messages on T-shirts are really weird and at times even bordering on rude.

Either way “T-shirt Expression” is a very powerful way of communicating and exhib-iting as your T-shirt is on a platform more

public than social networking. Wher-ever you go whether it’s national or international everyone will see what

your T-shirt says without any privacy settings.

Some cool things to do

with your friends during

the festive

season:

Bring it on!!

Outdors is the place to be.

Go to a pool party.

• Beyond what you’re doing, it’s about who you’re doing it with. When you’re with friends, its often not the activity that’s what you remember, it’ll be that one time your friend of 12 years accidentally ate a red pepper and set their mouth on fire.

• Or, when you drove to your friends place at 3 in the morning cuz they locked themselves out the house and have to crash at your house.

• A good investment is most definitely some sort of gaming console because in the long run, it’ll provide hours of com-petitively friendly time with you and your mates.

• But of course, too much TV isn’t good for anyone – getting outdoors is awesome too.

• Everyday can be a pool party in December, so grab the sunscreen and compete as to who can do a better under-water handstand. You can even rent a season of a cool TV show which will keep you and your mates occupied for a solid few episodes and give you something to talk about.

• If you’re going to go out, consider that money doesn’t grow on trees. Of course, a trip to the big screen is always a cool option, as is a bit of time in gaming arcade.

• A trip to go bowling can be cool too. Try lay off the take-out because too much of it is not only bad for you but for your pocket too.

The end of year has arrived, exams are done, some matriculants are off on a fun-filled “matric vac” and of course Christmas and New

years are just around the corner. There’s a general excitement in the air as everyone is looking forward to holidays and having some fun. Many of you will be out and about and at play! So even as you play

here are a few tips on how to play safe!

•It’s always a good idea to have your cellphone on you at all times in case of an emergency.

•There’s nothing wrong with having a drink at the legal age of 18 but try not to go overboard by having one drink too

many.

•Grab a filling meal like a burger and chips before having a “big night out” to line your stomach and avoid getting sick

by having a drink on an empty stomach.

•If someone is courteous enough to buy you a drink make sure you see it poured for you to make sure nothing dangerous has

been put inside.

•Whether you’re quickly going to the loo, getting a breath of fresh air or taking some quiet time to get to know someone better.

Always make sure that when you leave your group of friends you let them know exactly where you’ll be.

•No matter how hot he is or how sexy she is. Make sure you use protection. Remember “No glove no love”.

•Organise a sleepover, put money together and use cabs for the night instead of drinking and driving.

•If you’re not very well aquainted with the people at the party and don’t feel completely safe. Trust your

gut go home or make sure you don’t have one more drink than you should.

“However you play, you must always remember to play safe.”

Something to think about

If you look at the year and whether or not it’s played itself

out according to your plans, I can bet you that not everything

went according to your plans. I know that many of my goals

I set beginning of this year were not achieved. But I’m not

upset about it because I have come to accept that in life not

everything goes as you have planned. Knowing this or rather

accepting this fact can be a bitter pill to swallow because it

makes you realise that though you may make plans you live

in a world where things happen that you can’t control. But

what you can control is how you allow the “let down” affect

you. For example you might decide on a Monday that you’re

going to have a picnic on Saturday, you spend the week invit-

ing friends, deciding on a venue and finally buying food and

drinks for your picnic. Come Saturday morning it’s pouring

with rain and the weather stays like that the whole weekend.

Things didn’t go as planned and it wasn’t your fault that the

weather-which you have no control over-changed. You have

an option in this situation to either beat yourself up about

your failed picnic or your could have an indoor picnic instead.

Bottom line is that even if you cancelled the picnic and didn’t

bother to reschedule you merely need to accept that things

didn’t go as planned and move on from that point. It is im-

portant to try again when you experience a “let down” but I

think it’s even more important to forgive the failiure and not

be too hard on yourself. Sometimes we let ourselves down by

being too lazy or not trying our hardest to achieve our goals,

but even when that is the case you have to forgive yourself

and try again next time. “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off

and start all over again”

It is always challenging to let go of the past. We always want to hang on and feel bad about we did or what we didn’t do as if feeling like that is going to change the things that hap-pened. Well guess what, whatever happened, happened and there’s nothing we can do to change it. We can either choose to move on or dwell in the past. Hey. We have been given free will to do whatever we like. So it is really up to us to make that change. Or rather, that choice.

I have made some mistakes. But for as long as I can remember, I have played the responsible role. In every situation and every relationship. I strive to be the best that I can be, always. I am strong and I never give up regardless of

what happens. I have had to learn how to be disciplined. And trust me; it has been very challenging as I’ve had to unlearn some of the things I had been taught in the past. Some-times I catch myself wishing for less

in order to gain more. More what? I don’t know, maybe what I want is more life experience. More love. More happi-ness. More money. If that’s the case, then please tell me what on earth have I been doing for the past 23 years? So what would happen if I’d loosen up and let go? You know, if I’d just stop chasing so hard?

Sometimes I even forget what it is that I’m chasing. And what sacri-fices I’m willing to make to finish this race. And be number 1. Uni-

verse, I’m tired! I was a spectator of my childhood, and now I refuse to carry such a habit into my adulthood. What’s this life thing about anyway, if not for living and loving? Some serious decisions need to be made

in this world of mine. Haha-haha!!! My senses experience a true revival every now and then. A revital-ization. I’ve started doing different experiments on my consciousness by removing bad habits in my life that I feel delay my original essence of being. Yes I work hard. Yes I wake up every morning and exercise. I eat healthy. I look after myself and read inspirational books. For what? For contentment. Yes. For contentment, because ALL I want is to be content with who I am and what I’m about.

You know, I think I’m on a life-mission to let the spirit in me go free. Oh yeah! I am freeing up my spirit! Hahahaha!!! (Note: I laugh a lot. So you are going to see a lot of “ha ha ha’s here”) It is a great feel-ing. I hope I am not boring you guys. You know what Kabelo said right? “it’s either you love me, or you leave me, alone...” *singing* Lol! For too long I have I cried over suc-cess, failure, money, boyfriends, clothes and my biggest weakness: the past. For far too long I have been stuck in the past, never stopping to feel the misery punch me in the face as the birds journey and the trees shiver off leaves tomake room for growth. In short I

RECESS FOURTH QUARTER 2011

Cover Story24

RECESS FOURTH QUARTER 2011

am saying, when everything and everyone was growing, I was stuck in the past. Ohh... the worst feeling ever. However, in 2010 I made a decision to loosen up the conrows, and live in the NOW. Be-cause that is what life is about!

I mean come on. What’s the rush? Where are you running to so fast – what’s there that’s going to make you happy? You need to live TODAY and stop worrying so much about the past or

the future. It is not worth it.

It might seem as if things are not working out right now, but everything is going toworkout perfect-ly for you, just as you wish. Let that heaviness fall off your shoulders. Cre-

ate your own beat and rhythm so that you, and only you, are able to dance to it ;-)

I have leaned to be thick skinned. I have to. Otherwise I will burn in

the heat.

Publishing is not a chlids’play. The fact that I am here means that I be-long here. I was supposed to be here without doubt. So please, do me a favour. Stop doubting yourself.

I am thinking to myself right now, that out of all career choices, why on earth did I choose this madness?’ But I love it. Being stuck in an office (because you have to) day inday out and pushing pen is not my idea of making a living. Connecting with my clients, sharing ideas with the Recess ambassadors during brainstorm sessions, pitching to an investor about Recess, shaking hands with random strangers during network sessions is just so much more fun! Hahahahah!!! I love it! I really do!

I must say though that I have been playing an outsider in the Pub-lishing industry for way too long. And I am changing that in 2011. It is time for a change and growth. And oh, I forgot to mention this in the dance to your own rhythm

paragraph:

Please remember that as you dance, dodge the thorns simply because they will penetrate through your shoes and may take a while to pull out. And do choose to walk fast over the gravel, it may seem long but trust that the tar is around the corner. Once you get ontothe tar, jump over puddles and refrain from the temptation of being mesmerised by your own reflection. Bear in mind that you’re still on the road to somewhere, where that is, you’ve got to decide.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Life has a funny way of planning out. I honestly thought that everything was going to go according to how I had imagined it...but little did I know... Being in matric made me feel as if I had a lot of limitations as I couldn’t go out as much as I wanted to. I had to choose my school work over my social life. In short, I am saying 2011 was full of a lot of challenges.

My memorable highlight was being selected as the deputy head girl of my school. I had already planned that to happen. I worked very hard to get to that position, even though I was aiming to become the head girl. My main aim is to achieve at least 4 distinctions...not to make my parents proud, but to prove to myself that I can do what I set my mind to.

The unfortunate experience had to go to my break up. I don’t understand why I dated Benny. I still hate the fact that he chose to date me for all the

wrong reasons. I suppose I was the cherry on top for his swag, as he was ad-dicted to being considered ‘Mr Popular’. I was not happy, I felt like I was dat-ing myself. But little did I know that he was using me as the trophy girlfriend while he came with another girl to our matric dance.

I decided not to take it to heart. I’m young, full of life and ambitious. I don’t have time to waste on people who don’t care about me. I am going to keep my head up high and make sure that 2012 becomes a much even better year. And I’m not rushing for a boyfriend; he will find me in time.

Wow, 2011 has been quite a phenomenal year for me. I guess this year I got to learn more about myself. I’m a soccer player, playing for the junior team of a well known soccer team. I was selected this year. I sup-pose it’s true what they say...putting in a lot of effort, sweat, tears and

time makes it worth your while when you’re aiming for something that you love the most.

It wasn’t that easy though. I realized how strongly I felt about guys, and I didn’t know what to do about it. I thought being gay was something that one chooses; I never chose to be gay. Gosh, I couldn’t hold the feelings I had for this other guy. It was hectic, I told my friend (who is also in my team) about my new discovery and all he could do was spread my treasured secret and everyone was shying away from me. I was left with no choice but to come out to my mother.

My mother has always been supportive, but I could see the disappointment in her eyes when I told her. It took her 2 months of not giving me pocket money, confiscating my video game and cutting off all my luxuries for her to acknowledge that I was still her son. We spoke about it, and she told me that she would rather have me as her gay son than no son at all. I’m still learning

how to be accepted, but I’m not forcing anyone to understand me, but I’m also not willing to accept people to judge me.

I won ‘The Player of The Year’ award and will be trying out for the main team. That’s all I’m looking forward to in 2012...it promises a lot of opportunities for me!
