Yorkshire & The Humber RYWU event14th November 2014
The Institute for Youth Work is a membership body for youth workers, providing a voice for their views and
supporting members to reach the highest professional standards…
Why an Institute for Youth Work?
• The ‘profession without a voice’ (Smith, 2002; Spence, 2004; Davies & Merton, 2009)
• No professional body to represent individual youth workers
• Share best practice, discuss developments and access CPD
• A singular voice
• Widespread consultation• 92 % judged IYW as a ‘positive thing’ • 80% saw its primary function, led by youth
workers themselves, as providing a voice for youth work and influencing policy
• NYA/ETS committee to kick-start the IYW
