REBECCA THOMPSON Rebecca Thompson’s paintings are visual poems about ordinary moments made memorable. She employs a loose painterly style to invite you into places you have been or to places you would like to go. Thompson’s varied subjects include interiors, river scenes, Maine seascapes, and views of the Mississippi Delta . In each, the viewer will find a sense of narrative, either direct or implied.

The artist often crops her compositions in ways that make viewers part of the scene. A front porch whose roof and left side are cut out of the picture is festooned with a clothesline full of freshly washed white laundry that asks you to take the porch steps and duck under the washing to find the laundress. A ladder back chair pulled slightly away from the table invites you to enter the room and join the youngster stretched out on the sun-dappled floor playing with a small dog. In other paintings of rooms devoid of figures you sense the inhabitants’ presence by their absence. Chairs and tables beckon. In others, roads stretch out giving you highway destinations or a climb to get you up to a mysterious blue water tower at the top of a hill.

Thompson is an unabashed colorist. She brushes warm yellows, pinks and oranges and contrasting cool blues, grays and greens on her canvases to focus the viewer on key subjects. A pair of bold yellow chairs sits on a large stone outcropping while

sunlight plays over its surface. A bright cerulean-blue facade with overhanging, white guttering is rhythmically broken by four large rectangular doors which open into a warm, yellow interior. And, in another work, a bright blue river meanders along a course bordered by yellow-pink fields that morph into yellow green as they move toward the horizon.

The artist uses her free brush strokes to create an atmospheric quality, a welcoming, softly diffused light, and to suggest the forms in her paintings. An open bottle on a tabletop in a hazy café suggests the hospitality of the bartender behind the bar in the background. A peninsula of land protrudes into a bayou gently lit by evening sunlight and begging for investigation. Figures on a broad path bid the viewer to join their late afternoon apple harvest.

Rebecca Thompson achieves a poetic lyricism in her canvases through a combination of composition, color, and Titian-like painting style. She makes paintings that remind as that the day is here for as to enjoy.

About Rebecca ThompsonA native Arkansan, Rebecca Thompson studied art at the University of Arkansas at

Little Rock. Her work has been selected for several juried shows, including the Delta show at the Arkansas Arts Center and has appeared in multiple publications.

Her work centers on shared experience. With bold color and well defined light, she spins a story and invites the viewer into the painting. By incorporating a bit of

mystery into her work, Rebecca encourages the viewers to complete the story with their own memory of a time or a place. Our common ground.

The most frequently heard comment about Rebecca’s work, “I want to be there.”
