Introduction

The Terwa Parallel Threaded Coupler is a full bar strength system (the coupling is stronger than the associated rebar, sometimes referred to as a “Bar Break” connection) allowing a safe, reliable and efficient method of providing continuity of reinforcement through stop ends and element intersections.The adoption of a metric parallel thread on an enlarged bar diameter provides sufficient cross sectionalarea of material at the joint to outweigh the tensile capabilities of the equivalent diameter reinforcing bar.This attribute means the performance of the coupling at the joint can be ignored in any structural assessment, in turn this makes the adoption of the Terwa couplers over the standard detailed bars a simple exchange. The Terwa Parallel Threaded Coupler System has a full CARES Technical approval.This not only verifies the performance of the system in accordance with BS8110 and EC2 it also providesassurance that the components are manufactured and assembled in a fully audited ISO9001 facility.

The female coupler (PSA) is supplied to the customer ready assembled on the reinforcing bar. Thelength of the bar is generally supplied as a full tension lap length in accordance with EC2, however,where the couplers are being used as a means of removing splicing laps the bars can be manufacturedwith any available and transportable length of reinforcing bar. There is no requirement for any threadingof the corresponding male bars (TSE) as these are supplied prefabricated with the corresponding metric parallel thread. There are no specialist tools required to complete the connection, this can be carried outusing a simple open jawed pipe wrench. Euro Accessories can supply a calibrated wrench to ensure the correct torque settings are achieved.

This is the cast in part of the system, it comprises a socket swaged onto a high yield reinforcement bar. The socket areais larger than the bar ensuring that the bar itself is the weakest part of the coupler. Also available in Stainless Steel.

PSA Female Couplers

Supplied as a straight reinforcement bar with sleeved andswaged female coupler body. Generally used in the firstpour to allow subsequent addition of male continuity bar inthe second pour. Can also be used in conjunction with nailing plates or threaded inserts to ease fixings to shutters.

TSE Male Couplers

Supplied as a straight male reinforcement bar, the threadedportion of the TSE is threaded into the exposed female section of the PSA once the shuttering has been removed.This provides the continuity reinforcement for the secondpour.

Place in and rotate the threaded PSCBolt into the PSA Coupler already castinto the concrete. Mount the secondPSA Coupler.

Rotate by hand the second PSA Coupler until the couplers are fastenedtogether.

The connection is finished by using aspecial torque wrench made by Terwa,to tighten the connection. The necessary torque for each type of rebaris shown in the table 1.

Position CouplerIn many instances the male bars (TSE) cannot be threadedinto position in the female coupler (PSA) mainly due to additional bends in the bar clashing with any adjacent rebar.The Position coupler is a simple method of connecting maleand female bars without rotating any of the reinforcementsteel. They are especially useful for connecting crankedstarter bars, long lengths or large diameter reinforcement steel that can prove cumbersome to rotate or connecting prefabricated reinforcement cages in piles or columns.

Alligator Splicing Couplers

IntroductionThe Alligator Couplers are used for splicing any grade or profile of reinforcing bar.These couplers are made for reinforcement steel with diameters in the range of10mm to 40mm. Connection is made by inserting bars into both ends of the coupler. The shear bolts are then screwed by hand and tightened with either ourelectric or pneumatic impact wrench until bolts shear off. These couplers can beused in particular cases to replace the damaged reinforcement with full connection to the existing structure.
