The mine was a small operation mining Scholzite - tiny transparent acicular crystals that aren’t supposed to fluo- resce. Manny Robins (1994, p230) says that Collinsite found at Reaphook Hill fluoresces bright green. So I went looking for bright green. I found some - mostly acicular crystals - and brought it home. It wasn’t until then that I noticed bright blue- white pinpoints of fluorescence, some on the green, some on the matrix. What was it? Research showed it to be Hillite, known nowhere else in the world. I may be the first per- son ever to see and photograph Hillite fluorescing under SW UV! Its crystals are microscopically small, and the only way I could see them properly was with super close-up photography. Questions remain. Why are some of the Scholzite crystals (if that’s what they are) opaque and fluoresce green? Are they clear and non-fluorescent but coated with Collinsite? Is there a third fluorescent mineral that fluoresces a duller white? To indicate scale in the photos below, you get pictures of a hair off my head down the right hand side of the top two. Reaphook Hill rises from the fl at desert about 100 miles from Puttapa. The mine was a small operation mining Scholzite - tiny transparent acicular crystals that aren’t supposed to fl uo-resce.
