The History - GS1 and MIT Ignited IoT Auto-ID labs and EPCglobal (Electronic Product Code)
6
The term “Internet of Things” (IoT) was first introduced in 1999 by the Auto-Lab (former Auto-ID Center) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
EPCglobal Inc. was formed under GS1 in 2003 to build on the set of EPC standard developed by the former Auto-ID Centre to realize IoT
Auto-ID Centre was changed the name to Auto-ID Lab. Nowadays, there are 6 Auto-ID labs around the world and over 100 IOT and RFID R&D projects .

Object Traceability = EPCIS
• Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) is an open standard used to track movement of objects as they move through the supply chain.
• The data shared at each read point in the supply chain provides WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHY of each read.
