Tracing the memory over and over, of-
a face that seemed too new, too strange.
Forced politeness-
both unwilling- He came to ask-
For her hand, her name.
Smiling slightly, at the giggles
of bowed heads behind small hands.
Gasp as the cup-
hotter than she’d thought- slips through her fingers, staining him as it lands.
Hands to her mouth

Eyes wide grope for the lights
stare down face pale and bloodless
Horror movie ending
cue the manic screaming the lights switch on as
the hero rushes in.
Grope for the tap Gasp for breath
Butter fingers bleed through cut, jagged skin.
Hiss at the hot water
Let him take over Sigh with relief
as the temperature adjusts
He smiles, voice soothing, hand on hand
washing away a little of the panic with each touch.
“What’s for dinner?”
A sleepy little voice murmurs. Chubby mehndi covered hands
clutch at the latch
Both turn, startled.
The moment is broken.
Share a look and finally,
finally,
laugh.
