Real-Time Situational Awareness, Powered by SAP HANA

IN-MEMORY PROCESSING FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE GEOSPATIAL ANALYSIS

The SAP HANA Real-Time Data Platform is both a completely in-memory database and an in-memory computation engine, offering several modes of analysis. The slow access time of traditional disk-based memory is not part of the computational chain in the SAP HANA platform. Co-innovation between SAP and Intel Corporation on chip-level instruction sets means that software and hardware are optimized to deliver an unparalleled increase in speed for complex analysis.

For geospatial queries of millions or billions of data points dispersed over a wide region, SAP HANA’s in-memory speed could make all the differ-ence in analytical mission effectiveness.

SIMPLER, MORE AGILE DEPLOYMENT

The SAP HANA platform includes several capabilities that would oth-erwise require a complex, multi-server environment and complicated data-movement strategies between the different processing steps. For example, it provides multiple modes of analysis, such as predictive, geo-spatial, graph and text analysis, without distributing the data. By provid-ing all these capabilities in one in-memory processing platform, complex-ity and time delays are avoided, enhancing command-and-control and intelligence analysis, and resulting in a much more agile and easy-to-ad-minister environment.

The scenario of analysts waiting minutes or even hours for geospatial queries to execute is eliminated by the extreme speed of the SAP HANA in-memory platform.

SAP HANA – MORE THAN A DATABASE

Multiple In-Memory Processing Capabilities …

In-memory calculation engine for mission-specific functions and algorithms

Predictive analysis library of formulas and algorithms

Natural Language Processing for unstructured text

Geospatial analysis

Graph engine for link analysis

Event Processing for real-time streaming data

Seamless, Smart Data Access to Hadoop and on-disk databases

Open Standards connectivity to existing front-end tools

…With a high-performance, in-memory, vector-processing columnar database

SCALABLE SITUATIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Multiple channels of information from various sources including operational units, other agencies, weather services, open-source news media, and other channels can supply the system with data regarding incidents and status. SAP HANA provides a scalable, real-time data platform, spanning from the control room to deployed forces, to quickly process and gain situational awareness, optimize response strategies, and manage appropriate communications across operational units.

JOIN INFORMATION FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES, INCLUDING HADOOP

A query coming into SAP HANA from front-end tools is federated to Hadoop and on-disk databases automat-ically. Smart Data Accesstm makes the location of the data transparent to the developer and the end-user and empowers a “temperate” data management strategy, with “hot” data contained in-memory in the HANA server for “analysis at the speed of thought”; “warm” data in an on-disk database system; and “cool” data in the Hadoop distributed file system. In addition, Smart Data Access al-lows real-time streaming data to be accessed in the same query against historical data in order to identify outliers and emergent events.

MULTIPLY THE VALUE OF EXISTING INVEST-MENTS AND LEVERAGE EXISTING SKILLS WITH OPEN-STANDARDS INTEGRATION

Since the SAP HANA platform is based on open stan-dards integration, it can accelerate existing tools that are in your architecture and connect to any data source, both structured and unstructured. The skill set needed to access functionality in HANA is the ubiquitous ANSI- standard SQL language and JDBC connectivity, which simplifies staffing. QUICK TIME-TO-VALUE: APPLICATION CODE AND DOCUMENTATION

The Real-Time Situational Awareness Engineered Solu-tion from SAP NS2 provides application code based on the HANA platform, as well as supporting documents that can be used as a “jump start” framework to reduce deployment time of an application that is customized for your mission. Profes-sional services are provided by appropriately credentialed engineers from SAP NS2 and its partner ecosystem.

Any type of information that needs to be understood with geospatial context can be processed in this in-memory platform. Unlike other approaches, SAP HANA allows the cross-analysis of multiple layers of data, such as human geography data, location assets, sensor-generated data, unstructured text reports or social media data associ-ated together by geospatial context.

OVERLAY MULTIPLE DATA TYPES AND HUGE VOLUMES OF DATA POINTS

The geospatial analysis and display of weather and terrain data, overlaid with threat force and blue force information, can help commanders identify the effects of weather on systems, tactics and operations. A HANA-based solution can leverage map libraries from any source, including ESRI, Nokia, Google and open-source maps.
