1 Corinthians 15:3-8“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins ... that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day ... that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time ... Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.” (ESV)
Notice: What They Did“All these … were devoting themselves to prayer … They prayed … ‘You Lord, who know the hearts
of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and
apostleship” (1:14, 24-25)
“Ready, Set, Wait!”
Devote (proskartereō)
•Persist in, to adhere to unwaveringly, to persevere faithfully.
“Ready, Set, Wait!”
Translations of Acts 1:14
• “All these with one accord were devotingthemselves to prayer together.” (ESV)
• “They all joined together constantly in prayer.”(NIV)

Clarification• Judas is replaced, not because of his death (the
rest of the Apostles die and are not replaced), but for his treachery and betrayal. Judas is replaced because he abandoned his position and forfeited his place in the circle.
“To take the place in this ministry and apostle-ship from which Judas turned aside.” (Acts 1:25)
“Ready, Set, Wait!”
Qualifications of Acts 1:22-23•Men who had accompanied the disciples from
the time of John’s baptism until Jesus’ ascension.
•Men who were eyewitnesses to Christ’s resurrection.
•Men who had been chosen by the Lord.
“Ready, Set, Wait!”
Acts 1:24“And they prayed and said, ‘You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen.’”
“Ready, Set, Wait!”
Casting Lots•Old Testament practice used for determining
God’s will (Pro 16:33; 18:18; Lev 16:8; Num 26:55; Josh 7:14; 1 Sam 10:20; 14:4)
•Acts 1:26 is the last occurrence of casting lots in Scripture.
“Ready, Set, Wait!”
The key is not HOW but WHY
• The basic understanding of the role of the “Twelve Apostles” was to be witnesses of Christ’s resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:8).
“Ready, Set, Wait!”
Uniquely Irreplaceable Office• “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, in the
new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones.’” (Mt 19:28, ESV)
• “Built on the foundation of the apostles … Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone.”
(Eph 2:20, ESV)
• “And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”
(Rev 21:14, ESV)
