I'm currently writing this in the beer garden ofone of Reading's local pubs, and the sun is blazingdown on me (for the first time this year!). Unfor-tunately I have neither a crystal ball nor a ma-chine that controls the weather. So I have no ideawhat the weather will be like when you are read-ing this. Hopefully the sun is shining and it's abeautiful day.

However, even if its raining, may I first of all, onbehalf of the many, many hard working and entirely unpaid volunteers who have made thisfestival possible…. welcome you to the 21st Read-ing and Mid-Berks CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival.

Once again Reading's biggest (although tempo-rary) pub has a massive range of Real Ales onoffer. In fact one of the biggest in the country. Thesame goes for the range of Ciders and Perries. Ifthese do not tickle your fancy we also have a superb range of foreign bottled and draught beersand lagers on offer along with English wines,British Country wines and mead (mankind's firstdiscovered alcoholic drink – and I'm sure the beeswould be pleased with what us humans managedto achieve with the honey!).

So please, regardless of the weather, sit back, relax in the largest beer garden in the county, orchat with your friends at the largest bar in thecountry this weekend. Listen to the many localbands (Friday and Saturday), take part in our PubQuiz (Thursday), have your face painted (Saturdayand Sunday), play our traditional pub games or tryyour luck on the tombola; but whatever you do,above all we hope that you have a great time.

I have one final and more serious point to make. The general election will be held very soon. Pubsare closing in the UK at a fearful rate. Last year Iasked everyone to visit their local, say hello andhave a drink. The Community Pub is a unique, valu-able and much loved part of our heritage. Last yearit was our turn to do what we could to keep ourlocal open. This year when you vote can I ask youto please consider the record of your local politi-cian and the national party they represent andvote accordingly. Perhaps this year we can havesome official help in protecting our local pubs.

CheersDave Scott

Real Ale has seen a huge growth in recent years. The number of breweries in the UK is now almost1,300 and more and more of our local pubs arestocking real ale.

We’ve got 555 different beers for you this yearfrom breweries all over the country. Ranging fromthe tip of the Lizard in Cornwall, all the way up toLoch Ness, and we're also featuring 34 breweriesfrom within 30 miles of the festival site. Some ofthe breweries have been going for hundreds ofyears, and we've a fair few that have opened theirdoors for the first time since last year's festival.

The beers are ordered along the bar alphabeti-cally by brewery. LocAle beers, brewed within a 30mile radius of the festival site, can be identified bythe LocAle symbol next to the breweryname, and on the cask end label. All the beers willbe available from opening time, provided the cel-lar team are satisfied that they are ready to serve. Some may take longer to clear and so will comeon later in the festival.

Along with the tasting notes in the followingpages, we have also done our best to provide anindication of the style of the beers with the helpof a handy coloured pint glass next to the beername.

Pale = Yellow in the programme and on thecask end label

Amber = Orange in the programme and onthe cask end label

Dark = Brown in the programme and on thecask end label

Speciality = Purple in the programme andBlue on the cask end label

Although we have done our best with beer de-tails, the programme had to go to print before thebeers arrived at the festival, so please refer to caskend labels for updated colour and ABV.

Allergy warningAllergen information for each beer is held at

the bar on which it is located. If you requirethis information please ask a member of staff.

MILDCAMRA promotes Mild throughout May. Thesecan be identified by the MILD next to the beername. Mild is one of our most traditional beerstyles and is enjoying a revival in today's real alemarket. Usually dark brown in colour, due to theuse of well-roasted malts or barley, it is lesshopped than bitters and often has a chocolateycharacter with nutty and burnt flavours. Mild is adistinctive and tasty beer and is one of the oldestbeer styles in the country.

HOPSUntil the 15th century, ale and mead were themain British brews, both made without hops.Hops were introduced from Holland, France andGermany after this time. This also started thetrend of reducing the strength of ale, as hops area preservative and beers no longer had to bebrewed as strongly in order to preserve them. Thehop also started the rapid decline of mead, whichis only made in a very few places today (do sample the range on the English Wine Bar!)

As always, many thanks go to our suppliers, particularly Duncan and Buster at Brecon, Mary atBoggart Hole Clough, Mark at Cornish Crown,Kerry at Dark Star, Chris at Firebrand, Nina at Flying Firkin, Tom at Forest, Allan at Great Heck,Rob at Good Beer, Richard at Milton, Andy at Nel-son, Paul at Small Beer, Sarah at Red Squirrel, Ben atTwickenham, and to all our direct delivery brewers.

We hope you enjoy drinking the beers as muchas we enjoyed choosing them.

BEER LIST

Page 44: Reading Beer Festival Guide 2015

Once again Reading Beer Festival cider and perrybar has one of the largest ranges in the country.Over 150 different options will be available overthe course of the festival, with a small numberbeing held back until Saturday to maintain the variety in the later days. These are marked promi-nently in the list below with SAT.

Despite our best efforts, some things will changeafter the programme goes to press. For the mostup to date information please refer to the caskend labels on the bar, or ask a member of our vol-unteer bar staff. An updated list will also be avail-able on our website.

Cider is fermented apple juice and perry is fermentedpear juice. Depending on the style, cider can bemade from a mixture of dessert apple varietiesand cooking apple varieties, or from specialistcider apples. Cider apples are smaller and harderthan cookers or eaters, but produce excellent juicefor cidermaking. Perry is often made from specialistperry pear varieties - unsuitable for eating - buteating varieties have been known to be included. Most ciders and perries are a careful blend of several varieties, but some use just one single va-riety. These are noted as “SV” after their name inthe list.

Since 2003 the festival has hosted CAMRA’s National Cider and Perry Championships, a presti-gious award judged by members of the public. As before, we are also running the South of Eng-land regional competition for both cider andperry, covering the counties of Dorset, Hampshire,Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Theregional winners will be announced on Friday

afternoon and will go through into the nationalchampionship judging. The national championciders and perries will be announced at about3.30pm on Saturday.

If you are at the festival on Friday afternoonthen you can volunteer to take part in a judgingpanel. The only qualification is liking cider orperry, as you will be guided through the wholeprocess by an experienced CAMRA volunteer. Ifyou want to join in, go to the cider and perry barand you’ll be allocated to a panel and given a timefor judging. Each panel takes about 45 minutes.

Once again we are lucky to have a number oflocal producers, who are all making their cidersand perries within 30 miles of Reading. Local producers are indicated with green highlighting inthe list below, and on the bar with special caskend labels.

Perries are highlighted with a yellow backgroundto help you spot them. The cask end labels alsodistinguish between cider and perry - green forcider and yellow for perry. As always, if you’re notsure where to start with such a range and choice, talk to the volunteer bar staff, who'll be happy toadvise you.

Allergy warningWhilst real ciders and perries have very basic ingredients, some do contain sulphites to con-trol the fermentation process. If you have anallergy and need to know which products areaffected please ask at the bar.

48 21st Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

At the Reading Beer Festival we have a wide vari-ety of Country wines. These are wines made fromfruits (not grapes); sugar-rich vegetables and evenleaves / bark from trees! We have ordered thesehigh quality wines from Devon, Worcestershireand even far-flung Perthshire. Country wines tendtobe a bit sweeter than their grape counterparts, ranging from medium dry all the way to dessertwines, bringing us nicely to the ever popularmead.

This honey-based wine is one of the oldest alco-holic beverages and it is believed that the term“honeymoon” came from the tradition followingweddings that the bride and groom would drinkmead for a month. This year we can offer you thechoice of five varieties of mead, the newest beingGarden Mead and Tournament Mead (quite howanyone could ride a horse after drinking mead, letalone consider jousting is beyond me!).

As well as Country wines we have some excep-tional grape wines from our local vineyard, Stan-lake Park. It is a short walk from Twyford station, in the grounds of a beautiful manor house. Wellworth a visit!

I look forward to seeing you at the wine bar.Cheers!

Foreign Beer Ordering Team

FOREIGN DRAUGHT AND BOTTLED BEERS

We are delighted to offer our customers the opportunity to sample a number of beers fromnewly-formed breweries and from breweries whichhave not previously featured at the Reading Beerand Cider Festival, alongside many tried and trustedfavourites. Of particular interest this year are two‘collaboration’ brews:

Rubberen Robbie - a lightly smoked 6.7% porterfrom two Dutch brewers, Oedipus and De Prael, brewed at De Prael in Amsterdam

Greenflash West Coast IPA – an 8.1% double IPAbrewed in Belgium at St Feuillien, in collaborationwith Green Flash Brewing Company of San Diego

In total there are around 150 beers selected tooffer a good representation across the various stylesand strengths.

Lambic is a beer style spontaneously fermentedwith wild yeast and can be very sour – an acquiredtaste. If this is not something you have tried beforeyou are welcome to come and chat to our team ofvolunteers prior to ordering beers from Girardin orBoon. They are knowledgeable and friendly and willbe only too happy to answer your questions, offerguidance and recommend beers to suit your taste.

Our thanks to José and Hugh from Bierlijn in Rotterdam for their enthusiastic support in enablingus to bring you an excellent range of Belgian andDutch beers, and to Olaf Schellenberg who hastrawled around his native land to bring you a superbselection of German brews and is usually to befound behind the bar ready to answer any questionsyou may have and to make recommendations.

Please remember that all bottled beers are avail-able for you to take home to drink but you are requested not to open bottles at the festival whichhave been purchased for take-away, as this infringesthe terms of our licence.
