On behalf of the many hard working and entirely unpaid volunteers who make thisevent possible, I would like to welcome

you to the 20th Reading Beer and Cider Festival.

Hopefully, as you are reading this, the sun hasbeen shining and it’s a beautiful day. But if not,and it’s raining, then I hope than you can consoleyourselves by sampling one or more of our many, many real ales, ciders and perries on offer. Or perhaps our massive range of foreign bottledbeers or British country wines is more to yourtaste? Whatever your favourite tipple, the volun-teers behind the scenes and behind the bars havescoured the country on your behalf – it’s a hardjob but somebody has to do it. We're confidentyou will find something to your tastes, whetherit’s an old favourite, or something new or unusual.

So sit back, relax in the largest beer garden inReading, or chat with your friends at the longestbar in Reading; listen to the bands (Friday and Saturday), take part in our Pub Quiz (Thursday), have your face painted (Saturday and Sunday), play our traditional pub games, or try your luck on the tombola; but above all I hope you have a fantastic time.

I do have one request though. Our pubs are disappearing at an alarming rate, and withoutpubs there would be nowhere to enjoy real ale therest of the year. So can I ask each of you to popinto your local next week, say hello and have adrink. The Community Pub is a unique, valuableand much loved part of our heritage. Do your bit to keep that heritage alive!

Cheers

Real Ale has seen a huge growth in recentyears. More and more of our local pubs arestocking it and the number of breweries in

the UK now numbers well over 1,100.

We’ve got 550 different beers for you this yearfrom breweries all over the country. Ranging froma ten minute walk from the festival site, to the tipof the Lizard in Cornwall, and all the way up to theIsle of Skye. Our longest established brewery firststarted brewing in the 15th century, and we’ve afair few that have opened their doors since lastyear's festival.

All beers will be available from opening, provided the cellar team are satisfied that theyare ready to serve. Some may take longer to clearand so will come on later in the festival.

Along with the tasting notes in the followingpages, we have also done our best to provide anindication of the style of the beers with the helpof a handy coloured pint glass next to the beername.

Pale = Yellow in the programme and on thecask end label

Amber = Orange in the programme and onthe cask end label

Dark = Brown in the programme and on thecask end label

Speciality = Purple in the programme andBlue on the cask end label

Although we have done our best with beer details, the programme had to go to print before the beersarrived at the festival so please refer to the cask endlabels for updated details on colour and ABV.

This year, rather than having a separate LocAlebar for beers brewed within a 30 mile radius ofthe festival site, we have simply put everythinginto alphabetical order by brewery. There is still agreat selection of LocAle beers that can be

identified by the LocAle symbol next tothe brewery name in this programme, and on thecask end label.

CAMRA promotes Mild throughout May and thefestival is no exception. Mild is one of, if not the, oldest beer styles in the country, and is enjoying arevival in today's market. Milds are identified nextto the beer name. They are black to dark brown topale amber in colour and come in a variety ofstyles, from warming roasty ales to light refresh-ing lunchtime thirst quenchers. Malty and possiblysweet tones dominate the flavour profile butthere may be a light hop flavour or aroma. Slightdiacetyl (toffee/butterscotch) flavours are not in-appropriate.

As always, many thanks go to our suppliers, particularly Arthur at Avalon, Stephen at BrightonBier, Duncan and Buster at Brecon, Mary at Boggart Hole Clough, Josh at Cornish Crown, Ninaat Flying Firkin, Allan at Great Heck (though wearen’t absolutely certain that we thank him forstepping down from the beer order role...), Rob atGood Beer, Sanj at Late Knights, Brian O’Kane andMagpie distribution, Richard at Milton, Andy atNelson, Paul at Small Beer, Sarah at Red Squirrel,Andy at Redemption, Ben at Twickenham, and theLBA. And to all of our direct delivery breweries.

We hope you enjoy drinking them as much aswe enjoyed choosing them.

42 20th Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

Once again Reading Beer Festival cider andperry bar has one of the largest ranges inthe country. Over 150 different options

will be available over the course of the festival, with a small number being held back until Satur-day to maintain the variety in the later days. These are marked prominently in the list belowwith SAT.

Despite our best efforts, some things will changeafter the programme goes to press. For the mostup to date information please refer to the caskend labels on the bar, or ask a member of our volunteer bar staff.

Cider is fermented apple juice and perry is fermented pear juice. Depending on the style, cider can be made from a mixture of dessert applevarieties and cooking apple varieties, or from specialist cider apples. Cider apples are smallerand harder than cookers or eaters, but produce excellent juice for cidermaking. Perry is oftenmade from specialist perry pear varieties - unsuitablefor eating - but eating varieties have been knownto be included. Most ciders and perries are a careful blend of several varieties, but some usejust one single variety. These are noted as “SV”after their name in the list.

For the twelfth year the festival will hostCAMRA’s National Cider and Perry Champi-onships, a prestigious award judged by membersof the public. As before, we are also running theSouth of England regional cider competition, covering the counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. For

the first time we are also conducting a regionalperry competition covering the same area. The regional winners will be announced on Fridayafternoon and will go through into the nationalchampionship judging. The national championciders and perries will be announced at about3.30pm on Saturday.

If you are at the festival on Friday afternoonthen you can volunteer to take part in a judgingpanel. The only qualification is liking cider orperry, as you will be guided through the wholeprocess by an experienced CAMRA volunteer. Ifyou want to join in, go to the cider and perry barand you’ll be allocated to a panel and given a timefor judging. Each panel takes about 45 minutes.

Once again we are lucky to have a number oflocal producers, who are all making their cidersand perries within 30 miles of Reading. New additions this year include Long Crendon ciderfrom Buckinghamshire and Orchard Cottage Ciderfrom Chalgrove in Oxfordshire. Local producersare indicated with green highlighting in the listbelow, and on the bar with special cask end labels.

Perries are highlighted with a yellow backgroundto help you spot them. The cask end labels alsodistinguish between cider and perry - green forcider and yellow for perry. As always, if you’re notsure where to start with such a range and choice, talk to the volunteer bar staff, who'll be happy toadvise you.

48 20th Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

At the Reading Beer Festival we have a selec-tion of award-winning Wines; fantasticgrape wines from Berkshire and Sussex as

well as a wide variety of Country wines (winemade from other fruits; sugar-rich vegetables andeven leaves/bark from trees!) from Devon,Perthshire and Worcestershire. These tend to be abit sweeter, ranging from medium dry all the wayto dessert wines, bringing us nicely to the everpopular mead… This honey-based wine is one ofthe oldest alcoholic beverages and had recentlyseen a resurgence in popularity. It is a popular belief that the term “honeymoon” came from thetradition following weddings that the bride andgroom would drink mead for a month! Well wedon’t have a whole month, but four days of tast-ing is a good start and, like all of our wines, bot-tles are available to take home.

I am pleased to announce that this year thewine bar is sponsored by Stanlake Park, our most

local producer. It is a short walk from Twyford sta-tion, in the grounds of a beautiful manor house.Well worth a visit!

I hope that you enjoy our wine and if you haveany comments or suggestions please feel free tolet me know.

Foreign Draught and Bottled Beers

Once again our friend Olaf Schellenberg hastrawled around his native land to bring youan excellent selection of German brews.

This year, in addition to many favourites from Belgium and the Netherlands, we have a number ofbeers which are new to this festival and a range fromvarious newly- formed Dutch breweries enthusiasti-cally sourced by José at Bierlijn in Rotterdam.

The selection offers a good representationacross the various styles and strengths. Not allGerman beer is lager, and Belgium has a lot moreto offer than fruit beers and Trappist brews. Wehave smoked beers; hoppy IPAs; dark and complexstouts; honey beers; beers brewed with wheat, andlambics. These are beers spontaneously fermentedwith wild yeast and are often sour. If you are notfamiliar with this or any other style you are welcome to come and chat to our team of volunteers, many of whom return year after year. They are knowledgeable and friendly and will beonly too happy to answer your questions and rec-

ommend beers to suit your taste. Please remem-ber that all bottled beers are available for you totake home to drink. There is a deposit of 20p onthe bottles, as this is a cost we incur if we do notreturn them to the suppliers. Please do not openbottles at the festival which have been purchasedfor take-away, as this infringes the terms of ourlicence.

As always, the beer list is subject to change as itis unrealistic to expect that all 140 ordered willarrive. Not all draught beers will be available atany one time owing to space restrictions: cask endlabels will clearly indicate what is currently beingserved.

We sincerely hope you enjoy sampling the beersas much as we did selecting the range.

Sue Thirlaway, John Thirlaway and Stephen Jackson
