Overwhelmingly, statistics show the single most effective way for you, as a parent, to ensure your child's reading success is to read aloud to him every day. Success in reading often leads to a child's higher academic achievement. Remember, you are your child's first and most important teacher, so read, read, read! Reading stories aloud with your child regularly will also: ♦ create a warm, secure bond

between you and your child ♦ foster your child's language

development ♦ convey that you feel reading is

important ♦ show your child that reading stories

is a special time you look forward to ♦ allow you to spend quality time

together ♦ build your child's love of learning ♦ create warm memories that your

child will remember all her life!

why read aloud with

Following these simple steps will help you in making your read aloud experiences with your child the best they can be! 1. The first step is

to select quality literature that is consistent with your family values and ideas. Generally, books with animal characters are a big hit with young children. There are some great book lists on the Ready to Succeed Ready to Succeed web pages and your local library is an excellent source as well.

2. The next step is to read the book yourself a few times before reading it with your child. This allows you to do a few things:

♦ Ensure the story and illustrations are appropriate for your child.

Steps to success in

reading

storie s aloud

♦ Understand the story line so you'll know how to guide the interaction throughout your reading.

♦ Know what voices and inflections to use while you're reading the story aloud with your child.

3. Create the mood for reading the story together by inviting your child to share the story with you. Snuggling up to read a book is a wonderful time for both of you! But remember, it's okay to read the book even if your child isn't sitting next to you. She will still hear the warmth in your voice and the language of the book.

4. Read the story with your child! Use different voices for the characters, speak loudly or softly depending on the action of the book, and have fun! The voices you use and the inflections of your voice make the story more interesting and engaging for your child and more interesting for you as the reader.

5. Interact with your child during the story.

You may ask what she thinks will happen next or point to an illustration and ask him what colors he sees. Keep in mind that asking too many questions may detract from the story line. Invite your child to supply rhyming words or phrases that repeat throughout the story. Encourage her if she wants to share in the reading.

6. Be patient in answering your child's questions throughout the story. If he is asking questions, he is engaged and interested! To answer some of your child's questions and to build anticipation for the story, try paging through the book prior to reading it

together.

7. Have fun! Research shows that parents who convey reading as entertaining and fun create a love of reading in their children!
