This year is the Indiana Bicentennial, and I’ve had a lot of time to think about our history and culture in 2016. In a time where cell phones and social media consume our lives and limit our in-person interactions, it’s easy to become disconnected from one another. In the past, our car was the vehicle that provided us with those connections and gave us the ability to express our personalities and passions face-to-face.

I’ve always been one that enjoyed meeting and talking to people – I like knowing what makes them tick and what fuels their passions. I’m a lot like my dad and grandfather that way. Some of my passions are cars and art; I’ve been very blessed to combine those passions and be able to make a living doing what I love at Deco Illusions since 1993.

This year on Main Street we pay tribute to the cars of the 50s era, from a time when post-World War II veterans and baby boomers were pioneers in business and innovation. These cars were their “social media” – expressing their passions, talents and success. They reflected artistry and were designed with modern life convenience and space travel in mind.

The Corvette is another one of those cars that is as all-American as baseball and apple pie. And the Mopar family is one of my favorite groups of muscle cars – they were fast with the famous 426 HEMI. They had awesome body lines and crazy colors, with stripe effects that made them pop out on the streets and in parking lots. They were built to get you into trouble… and out of trouble in a hurry! The creative designs and marketing of these cars make the 50s one of the best eras in automobile history in my book.

Thank you for joining us in “Small Town, USA” to reminisce on good times and meet others as we try to preserve these memories and our town. I would like to especially thank all of our volunteers as well. We are 100% volunteer-run and need them to keep this event going every year!

Historic Roanoke, IndianaBefore and After

Our charming little town of Roanoke is a vibrant testimony to the revitalization of small town America. Like so many small towns across Indiana and America, it had lost its purpose. Gone were the small mom and pop shops of the past, the local grocery and the five and dime. With the automobile and the improved highway and road systems, the box stores and supermarkets, local customers preferred discounts and the ease of one-stop shopping. Here in Roanoke, we’ve been fortunate. As local retail was going out of business, we had an entrepreneur whose company was growing. As each business would close its doors, they went to American Specialty Insurance to ask if they would buy their building. At the same time, American Specialty was growing and needed more space. As a sports and entertainment insurance company, they were not dependent on the local economy for business. With each building purchase came the fix-up. This tiny town began to look better, and in 1992 a volunteer group of local businesses and citizens formed a sub-committee of the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce. It oversaw a downtown improvement project which took down the overhead wires, resurfaced the street, planted trees, and installed new brick-lined sidewalks and antique-looking streetlights. The Roanoke Beautification Foundation was born. A 501(c)(3), the RBF was established to help this revitalization continue. Through the funds raised by the Rolling Into Roanoke car shows and other fundraisers, the Foundation set up an initial $25,000 endowment through the Huntington County Community Foundation. The intent is to raise enough to continue its beautification goals and ensure the continued maintenance of these projects. This year we were approached by the Indiana Racing Memorial Association (IRMA), with the request to place an historic marker honoring

racing legend and deceased Roanoke resident, Gene Hartley. We are honored to incorporate the dedication of this plaque as part of the car show. The Roanoke Area History Center on First Street is a co-sponsor, and we hope you will witness this historic event this afternoon. We invite you to visit our information booth to make a donation or find out more about us. Thank you to the many sponsors and participants of this event. The love of cars is often a family affair. Many of us received Dad’s dated wheels at 16 or perhaps even tinkered on a vintage beaut in the garage with him. The slick energy of some of those earlier models or the irresistible purr of an exotic ride never goes away. We’ll be in our late seventies and still perk up at the sound of a revving engine. That love is one Ken Lingenfelter knows well – and he should. With a family history in the automotive industry, Lingenfelter is a motor enthusiast and owner of both Lingenfelter Performance Engineering and the private Lingenfelter Collection, which boasts 150 cars at any given time. Engine oil and gasoline are in his blood.

Lingenfelter’s lust for Lambos and Corvettes alike came from a childhood around cars. His father worked as an executive with General Motors’ Fisher Body division, and Ken Lingenfelter spent his teenage years racing his classmates in the streets. He built his own title company, and after he sold it began collecting American muscle and exotic European cars from around the world.

Lingenfelter’s cousin, National Hot Rod Association driver John Lingenfelter, founded Lingenfelter Performance Engineering in 1974,

specializing in the modification of some GM models (this business is located at 1557 Winchester Rd., Decatur, IN). John was critically injured in a California drag racing event in 2002 and passed away in 2003. Ken Lingenfelter felt it was right to run his cousin’s business in his honor and eventually purchased the company in 2007.

In the meantime, he continued to add to his collection of cars. Today the collection contains several Corvettes, muscle and exotic cars. Lingenfelter has a great knack for selecting some of the rarest cars in the world – he is proud to own a Bugatti Veyron, an Enzo Ferrari and a Lamborghini Reventón. He also collects vehicles significant to Lingenfelter family heritage, specifically from John Lingenfelter’s racing history.

And the collection continues to grow. It currently boasts over 150 cars, which are kept in Lingenfelter’s 40,000-square-foot museum outside of Detroit. Of that collection, 40% are Corvettes. It’s true – the name “Lingenfelter” is almost synonymous with the word “Corvette,” and Lingenfelter’s obsession with Corvettes and their history is a benefit to enthusiasts everywhere. While the collection is closed to the public, Ken Lingenfelter and his wife, Kristen, have tremendous spirits of generosity. The museum is a location for charity events over 100 times a year, and they are actively involved in a number of charities themselves, including the support of breast cancer research, juvenile diabetes, youth organizations and more.

Rolling Into Roanoke is honored to welcome Corvettes from the Lingenfelter Collection for the 2016 car show. Take some time throughout today to take a closer look at these gorgeous pieces of automotive history. The team from Lingenfelter Performance Engineering is showcasing performance updates offered from the Decatur location.

Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana

Stop by the exhibitor area in the park to speak with representatives from Honor Flight Northeast Indiana. It is a nonprofit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices by flying them to Washington, DC to reflect at their respective memorials. Top priority is given to WWII survivors along with other veterans who are terminally ill. All trips are completely free to the veteran being honored. This photo shows one of the groups of more than 85 veterans taken on each trip.

9/11 Remembrance Truck

THE GM FuturlinerThe National Auto and Truck Museum (NATMUS) located in Auburn, IN is proud to feature a 1953 restored General Motors Futurliner from the GM Parade of Progress. There were 12 total Futurliners made, and the one at today’s show is known as #10.

A bit of history behind this Futurliner: Mr. Don Mayton had a dream of restoring a Futurliner. However, doing so would not be financially attainable on his own, so he began searching for other means. He ended up at NATMUS, where they not only had one awaiting restoration, but had a “Partner Program” where he could take it home to restore and they would help raise the estimated $200,000 to complete it. The museum owns the Futurliner and Don and his crew of volunteers are content to be part of an effort to bring the Futurliner back from the past.

The Remembrance Rescue Project was created by firefighters to restore, preserve and share the FDNY Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 fire engines from 9/11 as educational tools, historical artifacts and memorials. The organization works with fire departments across the country to host the Rescues throughout the year. The Project strives to keep the memories alive of those lost on September 11th and all firefighters killed in the line of duty every year. The Project is 100% operated by firefighters from across the country volunteering their time. We are honored to have them in Roanoke today.

GENE HARTLEY, 1926-1993 Born and raised right here in Roanoke, Indiana, Gene Hartley was a racing legend: first as a midget car driver and then as an Indy-car driver. Born into a family that loved engines, motors and speed, Gene followed in the footsteps of his father Ted and his uncle Glen who raced in the early years of the automobile on the dirt track circuit until 1925. Gene was the 1959 USAC National Midget Series Champion, and his 33 USAC feature wins were the eighth best all-time. USAC racing at the Speedrome in Indianapolis dates back to Hartley who was the winner of USAC’s first ever race in 1956 when he won a 50-lap midget feature. Gene was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1985. While midget racing in 1950 he caught the eye of an Indy Car owner who asked if he would like to drive in the Indianapolis 500. Gene went on to race in ten Indy 500 races. His highest finish was an impressive 10th place, though he also finished 11th three times. Gene Hartley is being honored today by the Indiana Racing Memorial Association (IRMA) with a historic racing plaque. This non-profit organization has a mission to recognize historically significant individuals around the state that have made Indiana the “Racing Capitol of the World.” Today they install this historic marker on the front lawn of the Roanoke Area Heritage Center on First Street and hold a ceremony starting at 1pm. Here to commemorate Gene is Carolyn Hartley Johns, his widow along with longtime sportscaster Howdy Bell and racing legend Merle Bettenhausen who both new Gene well. All are invited and encouraged to witness this historic event today at 1pm on First Street.
