Molly helps her owner, Wilson Abbott of Phoenix Signs, deliver finished products. Molly was a stray Chocolate Lab found in Warren. She now has a home and a job. Lucky girl.

The Humane Society will take the fun activities of Paws in the Park and begin a new tradition. A Pet Celebration and Open House will take place on Sunday September 21st from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Society Shelter at 212 Elm Street. This will give our friends, alumni, and supporters a chance to visit, show off their pets, and enjoy an afternoon with their dogs. Our cat photo contest offers cat lovers the chance to show off their photography skills and their feline friends. A canine costume contest and doggie games will highlight the fun. There will be music, food, and games for the kids. The Cinco C’s Alpacas from Port Allegany will highlight the event. A Blessing of the Animals will be officiated by Reverend Dan Wolboldt of the Interfaith Chapel.

HELP WANTED

Volunteering is key to any community organization. It is also the basis for an impressive resume for a high school student thinking of college. Employers look favorably on those who give of their time for others. Retired persons who would like to do “something they have always wanted to do”, or just simply need something to do, are also welcome. We have a myriad of opportunities and need those willing to give of their time to help us help the animals. Enhance your resume by volunteering at the Humane Society!

Gift Giving- Remembering the Warren County Humane Society in your will, life insurance policies, or charitable trust is an excellent way to help provide care and protection for needy animals in the future. You can name The Warren County Humane Society as a direct beneficiary of special assets, a portion of your estate, or as a contingent beneficiary to receive those assets originally designated for loved ones in the event that they do not survive you. Your gift enables you to provide comfort, safety, health and compassion for animals long after you are gone. A wonderful way to express your love for animals as part of your legacy to the world.

Educational Tours and Programs

Humane Educators are needed who can spend an hour visiting the schools, playgrounds, and daycare centers. They are also needed at the shelter to teach children proper care of their pets and proper handling of animals.

Lost and Found Pets Most lost pets can be found if you take action immediately.

If your pet strays contact: • Newspapers • Radio Stations • Humane Societies • Police • Veterinarians • Place posters in your

neighborhood

To prevent a tragedy: • Keep a collar and ID tag on

at all times • Write your phone number on

collar with a marker • Have your pet tattooed or

micro-chipped • Put the rabies tag on your pet’s collar • Keep collar tightened so only two fingers fit under • Check tie outs and door locks often • Check fences To report lost and found pets call: 726-3604 or 726-1961.

Haley Nelson, Pat Evans, and Phoebe Nelson bring gifts for our Society pets. They had a birthday celebration where guests were asked to bring gifts for the Shelter.

Sheba is an awesome brindle colored Lab mix. A stray, about a year old, she is looking to be found by her forever family.

Best Wishes Ginny Ginny Simmonsen has been volunteering for over 10 years. She has done just about everything one can do with helping with fundraising, advertising pets on the radio and TV and informing the media about the stray animals to help owners find their pets. Ginny was always there to help and give time. We are so privi-leged to have her be a part of our life. We will miss you Ginny. Stay warm in Maine.

Birthday or Anniversary? Think about asking your guests to give gifts for our animals.

Fall and winter sessions begin on Tuesday September 16th with primary and graduate classes. Call us at 726-1961 or go to www.warrenhumanesociety.org for more information and how to enroll. Make your dog the best he or she can be!

A PET’S TEN COMMANDMENTS 1. My life is likely to last

10-15 years. Any sepa-ration from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to under-stand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me. It’s crucial for my well-being.

4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when speak-ing to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will not forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, re-member that I could hurt you, and yet, I chose not to.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncoop-erative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old, for you too will grow old.

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Take a moment today to be thankful your pets. En-joy and take good care of them. Life would be a much duller, less joyful experience without our pets. Hope, love, and joy is here on earth and has four legs.

Looking for a Special Gift? The Humane Society now offers custom embroidery sweats, t-shirts and hoodies. Stop by and check out our great clothes and have your favorite breed or pet featured.

Education Grant Awarded The Albert Schweitzer Animal Welfare Fund has awarded the Humane Society Pet Resource and Adoption Center in Warren a $5,000 grant toward humane education. This grant is specifi-

cally awarded for the use of funds to educate our area’s children on the im-portance of being humane toward ani-mals. We are in the planning stages. Most of the grant money will purchase “The Kind News”, a newsletter that will be distributed to students in grades 2,4,& 6. The remaining money will be used for humane education at the Humane Soci-ety for tours & Dog Bite Prevention edu-cation. Nearly 120 children visited the Hu-

mane Society last year and were provided information on stay-ing safe around animals.

Spay/Neuter Grant Awarded by Irene C. Evans Charity

Humane Society grant writer and Board member Sandy Nicholson has successfully acquired a $5,000 grant for a public spay and neuter pro-gram.

The program is in the beginning stages of plan-ning and will be announced soon. Pet owners will be able to apply for a $50 discount coupon

toward a spay or neuter. The Humane Society Pet Resource and Adoption Center in Warren is committed to help make this important surgery avail-able to all pet owners.

FOUND ON THE WEB: “If you're looking to make a dog part of your family, check your local shelters first. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will ensure that your money is not going to support a puppy mill. There are many dogs waiting for homes in shelters all across the country—and an esti-mated one in four is a purebred!” - Oprah Winfrey. Ready for the Chilly Days Ahead? Cold weather is just around the corner. Now is the time to plan for the winter months. • Keep your kitty inside and help keep them safe from dan-

gerous snow plows. • Frostbite is serious. Check their feet often for swelling

and infection. • Shelter must provide warmth

for your pets. Bedding is a must. Use straw or hay.

• Check outside animals daily. • Fresh water is essential in cold

weather. Don’t let water be-come frozen.

• Feed more food in cold weather. It takes more calories to keep warm.

• A health check-up at the vet is recommended before the snow flies.

• Exercise your pets and bring them in the house in the cold harsh temperatures.

Think about what you would like and provide that for your pet. Inside is best!

Want to play? I do. The truth is, I live to play!! My name is Pongo and I will need an owner with some experience. It would be even better if you like to walk and exercise! I know how to sit, stay and can shake your hand. I am a male

Shepard Mix, and about two years old. I am looking for my forever home.

Let’s break that chain Dogs are pack animals and like spending time with their owners. They enjoy going on walks, playing, and riding in the car with their family. Just like people they suffer when they are confined in the hot sun, rain or freezing weather. “Outside only” dogs are more likely to bite and show aggression toward people and other animals. More than half of the cruelty and neglect calls we receive involve chained dogs. Kennels are one alternative. Out-side-only pets can be trained to live inside. We are here to help.
