Recommended for: Piano, violin, viola and cello students following the RCM curriculum

Class Times: Tuesdays 3:30-4:00pm (Prep - Grade 3); Tuesdays 4:15-5:00pm (Grades 4-7); Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm (Grades 8-ARCT)

Fee: $12 per class (students must register for a minimum of 4 classes)

Class Description: Essential exam components will be reviewed in a weekly seminar that will track progress and preparation leading to the August practical exam. Areas of focus will include exam repertoire, etudes, technical requirements, sight-reading and ear-training.

Suzuki Summer JamboreeBased on the belief that children learn a musical instrument as naturally as they learn to speak, the Suzuki method is widely accepted as one of the most effective forms of music instruction. VAM was one of the first North American institutions to incorporate Suzuki and has since been recognized as a global leader in the teaching method. Parents are required to participate in the learning experience by attending lessons and group classes and reinforcing the learning points with daily home practice.

Class Description: Suzuki prep class covers essential building blocks such as instrument geography, holding position, and rhythm and singing exercises.

Chamber MusicWith a little more available free time, summer is a perfect opportunity to explore and enjoy the joys of playing chamber music. Whether it be a string quartet, piano trio or countless other configurations find out why chamber music is best described as a conversation between friends.

OrffOrff provides students with a progressive method for developing musical skill activities centred on song, movement and speech patterns. Rhythmic and melodic awareness is enhanced through hands-on exercises involving percussion instruments and recorders.

KodalyChildren learn to recognize melodic and harmonic relationships through their experience with simple folk material, songs and games. Hand signs are used as a visual aid to help establish pitch, interval recognition and independent part-singing.

This popular program exclusive to VAM engages both sides of the brain through a combination of Music and Math activities that develop cognitive and rationale thinking while fostering a child’s natural curiosity for discovery and creativity.

Math & Science Explorers Designed for advanced students between the ages of 4 to 7, students will be given personalized math coursework from a variety of math resources that teach concepts, computation and problem-solving skills. Students will be introduced to the scientific method and will explore thematic lessons – Earth & Space Sciences, Life & Physical Sciences - based on the provincial science curriculum.

Reading & Writer’s CircleThis program combines to Language Arts study fields into a summer intensive based on the provincial Language Arts elementary curriculum.

Reading Circle: students enhance their reading comprehension by using best practices programs including Power Reading and The Daily Dozen.

Writer’s Circle: students explore the elements of powerful writing using The 6+1 Traits of Writing and Writing Power. Lessons will focus on the importance of ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions and the presentation of written work.

Register online at vam.ca • Tuition and fees must be paid one week before the start of instruction or program

SUMMER PAYMENT OPTIONSPayment may be made by cash, cheque, VISA, MasterCard, or Interac. A $25 service charge will be applied for any returned cheques.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Lessons are offered: • During summer session dates of July 6 – August 22 • Private lessons are scheduled at the mutual convenience of the teacher and student • A trial lesson may scheduled based on the hourly lesson fee rates

LESSON ATTENDANCE

Student Absences: The student should inform the Registrar at the time of registration regarding planned absences such as vacation so that the number of lessons can be adjusted at the time of registration. Once a student has committed to a specific number of lessons, the instructor reserves these times for the student. Missed lessons by the student will only be made up under special circumstances at the discretion of the teacher.

Instructor Absences: If an instructor is absent, every effort will be made to reschedule the lesson at a time that is suitable for both the instructor and student. If the instructor is unable to make up a lesson, the student will receive a refund or credit to be applied to future lessons or classes.

HOLIDAYS AND CLOSURESPlease check VAM’s online calendar for important information on holidays and other important dates.

CHANGING INSTRUCTORSIt is highly recommended that students do not change instructors during the middle of a term. In such cases, approval must be granted by the Executive Director before any transfer can be made.

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS

Group Classes: If a student withdraws from a group class after two weeks then paid fees will be transferred to a school credit. No credits will be issued for withdrawals from a group class less than two weeks before the start date. If a student’s behavior is deemed consistently disruptive to a class, the instructor will have the right to deny entry to the class after consultation with the parents.

Private Lessons: If a student wishes to withdraw from private lessons during the summer session, two week’s notice to the Instructor is required. The date of notice will be the date the Instructor submits to the Registrar.
