Children 14 years oldand over shouldonly operate a snow thrower underclose parentalsupervision.Only personswell acquainted with theserulesof safe operationshould be allowed to use yoursnow thrower.No one should operate thisunit while intoxicated orwhile taking medicationthat impairsthe senses orreactions.Keep the area of operationclear of all persons,especially small childrenand pets.Exercise caution to avoidslippingor falling,especiallywhen operating inreverse.

PREPARATIONThoroughly inspect the area where the equipment isto be used and remove alldoor mats, sleds, boards,wires and other foreign objects.Do not operate equipment withoutwearing adequateoutergarments for winter. Do not wear jewelry, longscarfs or other looseclothingwhich could becomeentangled inmoving parts. Wear footwear which willimprovefootingon slipperysurfaces.Before workingwithgasoline, extinguishalt cigarettesand othersources of ignition.Check the fuel beforestartingthe engine. Gasoline is an extremelyflammable fuel. Do not fillthe gasoline tank indoors,while the engine is running,or untilengine has beenallowed to cool at least two minutes. Replace

gasoline cap securely and wipe off any spilledgasoline before startingthe engine as itmay cause afire or explosion.Use a grounded three wire plug-in for all unitswithelectricdrive motors or electricstarting motors.Adjustcollector housingheight to clear gravel orcrushed rocksurface.

Never attempt to make any adjustmentswhile engineis running(except where specificallyrecommendedby manufacturer).Letengine and machine adjust to outdoortemperature before startingto clear snow.Always wear safety glasses oreye shields duringoperationor whileperformingan adjustment or repair,to protecteyes from foreign objects that may bethrown from the machine in any direction.

OPERATIONDo not put hands or feet near or under rotatingparts.Keep clear of discharge opening and auger at alltimes.Exercise extreme caution when operatingon orcrossinggravel drives, walks,or roads. Stay alert forhidden hazards or traffic.

Do not carry passengers.After strikinga foreign object, stop the engine, removewire from the spark plugand thoroughlyinspect thesnow thrower for any damage. Repair the damagebefore restartingand operating the snow thrower.If the snow thrower starts to vibrate abnormally,stopthe engine and check immediately for the cause.Vibration is generallya warning of trouble.Stop the engine whenever you leave the operatingposition,before uncloggingthe collector/impellerhousingor discharge guide and before making anyrepairs,adjustments,or inspections.Never place your



hand in the discharge or collectoropenings. Use astickor wooden broomhandle to unclogthedischarge opening.Take allpossible precautionswhen leaving the unitunattended. Disengage the collector/impeller,stopthe engine and remove the key.When cleaning, repairing,or inspecting,make certaincollector/impellerand allmoving parts have stopped.Disconnectspark plugwire and keep away from plugto prevent accidentalstarting.

• Do not run the engine indoors,except when startingitand/or transportingthe snowthrower in orout ofbuilding.Open doors before startingtheengine inthatcase. Exhaust fumes are dangerous.Do not clear snow across the face of slopes. Exerciseextreme caution when changing directionon slopes.Do not attempt to clear steep slopes.Never operate the snow thrower withoutguards,plates or othersafety protectiondevices in place,

• Never operate the snow thrower near glassenclosure, automobiles,window wells, drop off, etc.,withoutproper adjustmentsof snow throwerdischarge angle. Keep childrenand pets away.Do notoverload machine capacity by attempting toclear snow at too fast a rate. Never operate themachine at high transportspeeds on slipperysurfaces. Lookbehindand use care when backing.Never direct discharge at bystanders or allowanyonein front of unitwhile throwing snow.

• Disengagepower to collector/impellerofthe srx)wthrowerwhentransportingitorwhen the unitis not in use.Use only attachments and accessories (such aswheel weights,counter weights, cabs, etc.) approved

by the snow thrower manufacturer.Never operate the snow throwerwithoutgood visibilityor light.Always be sure of yourfooting and keep a firmholdon the handles. Walk, never run.Mufflerand engine become hotand can cause severebum injury.Do not touch the muffleror the enginewhilestarting oroperatingthe snowthrower.

MAINTENANCE AND STORAGECheck shear bolts, engine mountingbolts,etc., atfrequent intervalsfor propertightness, thusensuringthat the equipment is insafe workingcondition.Never store the machine withfuel in the fuel tank

insidea buildingwhere ignitionscumes are present,such as hot water heaters, space heaters, clothesdryersand the like. Allowengine to cool beforestoringin any enclosure.Always refer to owner'sguide instructionsforimportantdetails if thesnow thrower isto be storedforan extended period.Run machine a few minutes afterthrowing snow toprevent freeze-up of the collector/impeller.Check clutch controlsperiodicallyto verifythat theseengage and disengage properlyand readjust ifnecessary. Refer to Service and Adjustmentssectionpage of this owner'sguide.

Removing From Carton• Cut the comersof the carton and lay the sides

fiat on the ground. Remove all packinginserts.• Remove all loose parts, For a complete listof

the looseparts, referto the following section.• Move the snow throweroutof the carton.• Make certain all partsand literaturehave been

removedbefore discardingthe carton.

Assembly Tips: For easier assembly purposes,remove the chute from the carton and lay it on top ofthe engine. Do not unwrapthe chute tillyou haveinstalledthe handle panel and the clutchcables.

WARNING: Make certainthe spark plugwire Is disconnected and movedaway fromthe spark plugbefore assemblingthe snowthrower.

Attaching Handle Assembly• Stretchout controlcables and place on the floor.

Place the righthandle in positionwiththe flatside against the snow thrower. Youcan identifythe right handleby the traction drive control labelon it and the left handle by the auger clutchcontrol label on it.

Securebottomholeonthehandletothesnowthrowerusing5/16x .75"hexboltandlockwasherfrom the hardware pack (groupA onpage 5 ). Donottightenatthistime.See Figure2.

• Place a handle tab, includedin the hardwarepack (groupA ), over the upperhole in handle sothat the contourof the handle tab matches thatof the handle. See Figure 2.

• Secure handletab to the snow throwerusinghex bolt (5/16 x 1.75" long)and lockwasherfrom the same group inthe hardware pack. Donottightenat thistime.

• Attachthe left handle inthe same manner. Donottightenat this time.

• Place the handle panel in positionbetween thehandles so the ends of the curvedpart of thehandlesgo throughthe slotsinthe handlepanel.While placing the handle panel, make sure toroutechute andchute cable between the handleand the panel keepingthe cable on top of theengine. Align the holes inthe handlewiththeholes onthe two sides of the handlepanel. SeeFigure 3.

• Attachhandle panel to the handle with twocarriagebolts,cupped washers (cuppedsideagainstthe handle panel) and hex nutson eachside. See Figure 3. You willfind these fastenersingroupB ofthe hardware pack.Aligncontourofthe carriage bolt head withthe handle. Tightenthe hardware. Repeat on other side.

• Align the hole on the curved partof the righthandle withthe correspondinghole on the rightside of handlepanel making sure that thisend ofthe handle isfirmly placed inthe sloton thehandlepanel. See Figure 3.

• Inserta hex bolt, cuppedwasher and flange nutfrom Group F of the hardware pack throughthese holes as shown in Figure 3.Tighten tosecure, Do notattach the left side now.

Attaching Chute• Place the chute assemblyover the chute

openingwiththe chute facing front of the unit.

NOTE: Make sure that the chute cables arestraightened while assembling the chute.

Place the chute flange keeper (flat side down)beneath lip of chute assembly as shown inFigure 4.You will find the chute flange keepers ingroup E of the hardware pack.Insert 1/4-20 x .75" hex bolt and flange nut(group Eof the hardware pack) up through chuteflange keeper and chute assembly as shown inFigure 4. Do not tighten at this time. Rotatechute to instal! all the flange keepers.

Afterassembling all three chute flange keepers,tighten, then back off 1/4 turn to allow easiermovementof the chute. Use (2) 7/16" wrenches.

Attaching Chute Crank• On the left side of the handle panel, placethe

upperchute crankbracket onto the insideof thehandle panel support.Locate thisbracketandassociatedhardware ingroup F of hardwarepack. See Figure 5.



Inserthexboltthroughthe upper chutecrankbracket, handle panel support,and upper lefthandle. Secure the bracketusingcuppedwasher and hex nut. Make surethat the cuppedside of the washer is set against the contourofthe handle.

Place the other 3/8 ID flat washer (fromthesame groupof hardware)on the end of the chutecrank and inserthairpinclip intoeye hole at theend of the chutecrank. See Figure 7.Slide the upperchute crank throughthe plasticbushinginthe upperchute crank bracketandthen intothe lower chutecrank. See Figure 8.Align the holeson the two piecesof the chutecrank, and securewith hairpinclip from groupCof the hardwarepack.Adjustthe chutebracketso that the spiralon thechutecrank fully engages the teeth onthe chuteassembly.Using a wrench, tightenthe hex boltand the hexnut onthe upperchutecrank bracket.Fullyrotatethe chute, usingthe chute crank, tomake surethat it moves freely. Tighten the nutson the lower chutecrank bracketsecurely.

Tightenallloose hardware on the handleassemblyin the followingorder-- firstthe hexboltsat the bottomof the handle, then thecarriagebolts and lastlythe hex boltson the rearof the handle panel.

Attaching Clutch CablesThe clutchcontrolcables are attachedto the snowthrower. If the cables ere attachedto the top of theengine withcable ties, cut the cable ties now. The Zends of the clutchcables are hooked intothe clutchgripson each handle.• Ensure there is a hex jam nutthreaded all the

way upthe threaded portion ofthe Z fitting;extras are supplied in the hardware pack. SeeFigure 10.

• Place the clutch grip in the raised (up) position.

A WARNING: There must notbe any tensionon either clutchcable withthe driveor augerclutchgripinthe disengaged (up) position.These clutchesare a safety feature. Do notoverride their function by allowingtensionon eithercablewiththe clutchesdisengaged.

• Start threadingthe ferrule(includedinthe samegroupinthe hardware pack) ontothe otherendofthe shiftrod. It has to line up withthe upper holeinthe shift lever(beneath the handle panel).While aligningthe ferrule, push down on the shiftrod and the shiftarm assemblyas far as it willgo.

• Once the ferrule slides intothe hole, turn itcounter-clockwiseone more ful!turn and insert itinthe hole inthe shift lever.

• Swing the left auger upmaking sure the cable isrouted correctly in the cable rollerguideslocatedat the lower rear of the unit.

• Hold the end of the cable at the barrel so theferrule turnsfreely withouttwistingthe cable.Thread the ferrule on to the Z fitting.You mayhave to pullon the cable slightlyto relievetension. Keepthe ferrule turningwithout twistingthe cable.

• You willreachcorrectadjustmentwhenthere isminimalslack inthe cable butit isnottight.Holdthe flats on the ferrule withpliersandtightenthejam nutagainstthe ferrule.

CAUTION: Cables willbecome loose if youdo nottighten the jam nut.

Secure the ferrule to the shift leverwithanother5/16 flat washer and hairpin clipfrom group D ofthe hardware pack. See Figure 11.Make certain to check for correctadjustmentofthe shiftrodas instructedinthe Adjustmentsectionbefore operatingthe snow thrower.

Attaching Turn TriggersMake surethat the righthand triggercable isroutedinfront of the tractiondrive cable.

• Feedthetriggercableupthroughthe outersideofthe slotinthe handlepanel.Donotfeedthe cablethroughthe samesideofthe slotastheZ fitting.

• Place the cablebarrelfitting intothe holeinthetrigger.You can findthe triggersandassociatedhardwareingroupH of the hardwarepack (onpage5). Pullon the cable and rotateit aroundthebottomof thetrigger,withthe innercable intheslot,untilthecable endcan be pushedintothetriggerhousingand snappedtight.See Figure 12.

Note: When the cable is installed correctly, it shouldnot be possibleto pullcable out of the trigger housing.

Place the rightturn trigger inpositionunderneaththe righthandle. Secure withscrewand weld nut from group H of the hardwarepack. See Figure 13. You will need a phillipsscrewdriverfor tighteningthe screw. Repeat onleft side.

• Secure the rightturn triggercable to the rightlower handle, usingcable tie providedinthe

hardware pack. Make sure to routethe cable tieover the drive cable. See Figure 14.

Secure the leftturn triggercable to the lowerhandle using the othercable tie. Make suretoroute the cable tie below the auger drive cableso that when the trigger cable is secured by thecable tie, the auger drive cable is left outside thecable tie.Trim excess ends from each cable tie.

NOTE: The right sidecable tie must be used to keepcable from comingin contact withthe moving shiftarm fromthe transmission.

handle. Plugwireintothe aitemator leadwireunderthefuel tank. See Figure15.

IMPORTANT: Assemble your snow thrower, thencheck the adjustmentsas instructedand make anyfinal adjustmentsnecessarybefore operatingthe unit.Failureto follow the instructionsmaycause damageto the snow thrower.

Final Adjustments

Adjusting Auger Control

• To check the adjustment of the auger control,push forward the left hand clutchgrip untiltherubberbumper is compressed, There should beslack inthe clutchcable.

• Release the clutchgrip.The cable should bestraight. Make certain you can depress theauger controlgripagainst the left handlecompletely.

• If adjustmentis necessary, loosen the hex jamnutand thread the cable in(for less slack) or out(for more slack),

• Recheck the adjustment. Tighten the jam nutagainst the cablewhen correctadjustmentisreached.

Adjusting Traction Drive Control

To check the adjustmentof the tractiondrivecontroland shift lever, move the weight transferleverto the transportposition(shownin Figure18 on page 13) and the shift lever all the wayforward to sixth(6) position.

• With the tractiondrive control released, pull thetriggersupto the handleand then pushthe snowthrower forward to checkthat the tracks turn.

• Squeeze tractiondrivecontrolagainstthe handleand pullthe starter.The tracksshouldturn.

• Now release the tractiondrive controland pullthe starteragain. The unitshould not move.

• Before proceedingwith adjustment, make surethat the spark plug is disconnected.

• If the tractiondrive controlneeds adjustment,loosen the jam nut on the tractiondrive cableand thread the cable one turn. Recheck

adjustmentand repeat as necessary.• Tighten the jam nutto secure the cable when

correctadjustment is reached.

NOTE: Cables are outof adjustmentif augerscontinueto turn whenauger clutchis released and/ormachine continuesto run when drive clutchisreleased. For more details,refer to the Service andAdjustment section.

Adjusting Skid Shoe

The space between the shave plate and the groundcan be changed by adjustingthe skidshoe.• Returnweight transferlever to normalposition

before adjustingskidshoes.• For closesnow removal,adjust skidshoes

higher to minimizegap between the shave plateand the ground.

• For snow removalfrom uneven groundlikegravel, adjustskidshoes downwardto createsufficientclearance between the bottomedge ofthe shave plate andthe ground. See Figure 16.

NOTE: It is not recommended that you operate thissnow throweron gravel as loose gravel can be easilypicked up and thrownby the auger causingan injuryor damage to the snowthrower. However, if you dohave to use the snow throwerongravel,put the weighttransfer lever to transport position.

• Adjustskidshoesby loosening the four hex nutsand carriage bolts and moving skidshoes todesired position. Make certain the entire bottomsurface of skidshoe is against the ground toavoid uneven wear on the skid shoes. SeeFigure 16.

• Retighten nuts and bolts securely.

Knowing Your Snow ThrowerRead thisowner's manual and safety rules before operatingyour snowthrower. Comparewithyour snowthrowerto familiarize yourselfwiththe location of variouscontrols andadjustments.Save this manual for future reference.The operationof any snow throwercan resultin foreign objectsbeing thrownintothe eyes,which can resultinsevere eye damage. Operating Controls(See Figure 17.)

Chute Crank

The chute crankis located on the left sideof the snowthrower. To change the direction in which snow isthrown, turn chute crank as follows:turn clockwise to discharge to the left;turn counterclockwiseto discharge to the right.

Chute Distance Control

The distance that snow is thrown can be adjusted byadjusting the angle of the chute assembly. Push thechute distance control lever forward to move theupper chute down and decrease the distance. Pull thelever back toward the rear to move the upper chuteup and increase the distance.

Left And Right Turn Trigger

The left and rightturntriggers are located on theundersideof the handles and are used to assist insteeringyour snow thrower. Squeeze the rightturntrigger whenturningright,squeeze the leftturntriggerwhen turningleft. Operate your snowthrower inopenareas untilyou become familiar withthese controls.

Shift Lever

The shift lever is located inthe center of the handlepanel. It may be moved into one of eight positions:

a. Forward--oneofsixspoeds;po,v_onone(1)is the slowest and position six (6) is thefastest.

b. Reverse--two reverse (R) speeds; R2 isfaster.

Use the shift lever to determine ground speed. Do notshift to different speed while the unit is moving.

Auger Control

The auger controlis located on the left handle.Squeeze the auger controlagainst the handle toengage the augers; release to disengage the augers.(Tractiondrive controlmust also be released.)

Traction Drive Control

The tractiondrive controlis located onthe righthandle. Squeeze the tractiondrive controlto engagethe track drive; release to stop.

This same lever also locks the auger control sothat you can turn the chutecrank without interruptingthe snowthrowingprocess. If the auger controlisengaged withthe tractiondrive controlengaged, youcan release the auger control (onthe left handle) andthe augers will remainengaged. Release the tractiondrivecontrolto stopboth the augers andthe trackdrive. (Auger controlmust alsobe released).

Weight Transfer Lever

The weighttransfer lever is locatedonthe rightside ofthe snow throwerand is used to select the positionofthe housingand the method oftrack operation. SeeFigure 18. Move the lever to the right,then forward orbackward to one of the three positions.

Before Starting EngineFill Gas

& WARNING: Gasolineisflammableand cau-tionmustbe usedwhenhandling orstoringit.

Do notfillfuel tank whilethe snowthrower isrunning,when it is hotor when it is in anenclosedarea.

Keep your snow thrower away from anyopen flame or an electricalspark and do notsmoke while filling the fuel tank.

Never fill the fuel tank completely. Fill thetank to within1/4"-1/2" from the top toprovide space for expansion of fuel.

Always fill the fuel tank outdoorsand use afunnel or spoutto prevent spilling.

Make sure to wipeoff any spilledfuel beforestartingthe engine.

• Store gasoline in a clean, approved containerand keep the cap in place on the container.

• Make sure that the container from which youpour the gasoline is clean and free from rust orother foreign particles.

• Fill fuel tank with clean, fresh, unleaded gradeautomotivegasoline.

• At the end of the job, empty the fuel tank ifthesnow thrower is not going to be used for 30 daysor longer. See storage instructions on page 24of this manual.

CAUTION: Experience indicatesthat alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol) or those usingetha-nol or methanol can attract moisturewhich leads toseparation and formationof acids duringstorage.

Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage.

To avoidengineproblems,the fuel systemshouldbeemptiedbeforestoragefor 30 days or longer. Drain thegas tank,start the engineand let it run untilthe fuellinesand carburetor are empty.Use fresh fuel nextsea-son. See storageInstructionsfor additionalinformation.

Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products inthe fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.

Push down onthe starterbutton until the enginestarts.Do notcrank formorethan 10 secondsata time. This electric starter is thermallyprotected. If overheated, itwill stopautomaticallyand can be restarted only when ithas cooled to a safe temperature (a wait ofabout 5 to 10 minutes is required).When the engine starts, release the starterbutton and slowlyrotate the choke to OFFposition. Operate the engine at full throttle (FAST) whenthrowing snow.

Warm Start

If restarting a warm engine after a shutdown,rotatechoketo OFF insteadof FULL and pressthe starter button.

B. Recoil Starter

Make sure that the engine has sufficientoil and theauger drive and the traction drive levers are released.• Move throttle control to FAST position.• Push key into the ignitionslot so that it snaps

into place. Do not turn key. Remove plastic bagand keep the second key in a safe place.

• Rotate choke control to FULL choke position.• Push the primer button while covering the vent

hole.Removeyourfingerfromthe primerbetweenprimes.Do not prime if temperature is above50° F; primetwo timesbe{ween50° F and 15oF;andprimefourtimesbelow15° F.

• Pull the starterhandle rapidly.Do not allowthehandleto snap back, butallow itto rewindslowlywhile keepinga firmholdon the starterhandle.

• As the engine warms up and beginsto operateevenly, rotatethe choke knobslowlyto OFFposition.If the engine falters, returnto FULLchoke, then slowlymove to OFF chokeposition.

• Allow the engine to warm upfor a few minutesbecausethe engine will notdevelop full poweruntilit reaches operating temperature.

• Operate the eng!ne at fullthrottle(FAST) whenthrowingsnow.

Warm Start

• If restartinga warm engine after a temporaryshutdown, rotatechoke to OFF insteadof FULLand do notprime. Press the starterbutton.

Frozen Recoil Starter

If the starter is frozen and will not turn the engine,proceed as follows:• Pull as much rope out of the starter as possible.• Release the starter handle and let it snap back

against the starter.• If the engine still fails to start, repeat the first two

steps. If continued attempts do not free starter,follow the electric starter procedures to start.

• Avoid possible freezing of recoil starter and theengine controls.

Operating Snow Thrower

To Engage Drive

With the engine running near top speed, moveshift lever to one of six FORWARD positions ortwo REVERSE positions.Select a speedappropriatefor the snowconditionsthat exist.

Use slowerspeeds untilyou are familiar withtheoperationof the snowthrower.Squeeze the tractiondriveclutchgrip againsttherighthandle and the snowthrowerwill move.Release it and the drive motionwill stop.

To Engage Augers

To engage augers and start snowthrowing,squeeze the left hand auger clutchgrip againstthe lefthandle. Release to stop augers.While the auger control is engaged, squeeze thetractiondrive controlto move, releaseto stop. Donot shiftspeeds whilethe drive is engaged.

NOTE: This same lever also locks the auger control soyou can turn the chute crank without interrupting thesnow throwing process.

• Release the auger control;the interlockmechanismshould keep the auger controlengaged untilthe tractiondrive controlisreleased.

• Release the tractiondrivecontrolto stopboth theaugers and the track drive.

,_ WARNING: To stopthe auger, both leversmust be released.

To Throw Snow

CAUTION: Check the area to be cleared for foreignobjects. Remove, if any.

• Move weight transfer leverto the right, thenbackward or forward to the desired position.

• Start the engine following StartingInstructions.Rotate the discharge chuteto the desireddirection,away from bystandersand/or buildings.Move the chute distance controlforward orbackward to adjustthe distance the snowis to bethrown.

• Select the speed accordingto the snowcondition.

CAUTION: Never move the shift lever withoutfirstreleasing the drive clutch.

Engage the auger controland tractiondrivecontrollevers following the precedinginstructions.The interlock feature will allow youto removeyour left hand from the auger controllever.When clearingthe first pass throughthe snow,controlthe tractionspeed of the snowthroweraccordingto the depth and conditionof snow.To turn the unitleft, squeeze left trigger;to turnright,squeeze righttrigger.On each succeeding pass, readjustthe chutedeflectorto the desired positionand slightlyoverlapthe previouslycleared path.

• Afterthe area is cleared, stopthe snowthrowerfollowing instructionsgiven below.

Operating Tips

NOTE: AIIowthe engineto warm up fora few minutesas the engine willnot developfullpower untilffreaches operatingtemperature.

Warning: The temperature of muffler andsurroundingareas mayexceed 150° F. Avoidthese areas.

• For most efficientsnow removal, removesnowimmediatelyafter it falls.

• Discharge snowdownwindwhenever possible.Slightlyoverlapeach previousswath,

• Setthe skidshoes1/4"belewthe scraperbarfornormalusage.The skidshoesmaybe adjustedupwardfor hard-packedsnow.Adjustskidshoesdownwardwhen usingon gravel orcrushedrock.

Sprocket Shaft

• Lubricatethe sprocketshaft withgreaseat leastoncea seasonorafter every25 hoursofoperation.

Gear Case

Engine Maintenance

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30etc.) improve startingin cold weather, these multi-viscosityoils willresult inincreased oil consumptionwhen used above 32°F. Checkyour snow thrower'sengine oillevel more frequentlyto avoidpossibleengine damage fromrunninglow on oil.

Refer to the viscosity chart forproper selectionofengine oil.

Checking Oil Level

IMPORTANT: Before operatingthe snow thrower,check the oil level

• With engine on level ground, the oil must be toFULL mark on dipstick.

• Stop engine and wait several minutes beforechecking oil level. Remove oil fill cap anddipstick.

• Wipe dipstick clean, insert it into oil fill hole andtighten securely.

• Remove dipstick and check. Ifoil is not up to theFULL mark on dipstick, add 5W30 oil.

Changing Oil

Change engine oilafter the firsttwo hoursofoperationand every 25 hours thereafter.Inorder to do that you willhave to first drain the spentengineoil from the engine and then refillwith fresh oil.

• Drainoil while engine is warm. Remove oil draincap located at the bottomof the recoilstarterofthe engine. Catch oil ina suitablecontainer.

• When engine is drainedof all oil, replace drainplugsecurely.Remove the dipstick from the oil till tube. Forlocationof the oil fill tube, see Figure 17 inset.Pour fresh oil slowlythroughthe tube. Replacedipstick.

• Check and make sure that the oil level is up tothe FULL mark on the dipstick.

WARNING: Temperature of muffler andnearby areas may exceed 150° F (65°C).Avoid these areas.

Spark Plug

• Clean area aroundthe sparkplug base.• Remove and inspect the sparkplug.• Replace the spark plug if electrodes are pitted,

burned, orthe porcelain is cracked. See Figure21.• Clean the spark plug and reset the gap to 0.030"

at least once a season or every 50 hours ofoperation. See Figure 21.

• Spark plug replacement is recommended at thestart of each season. Refer to engine parts listfor correct spark plug type.

NOTE: Do not sandblastspark plug. Spark plugshouldbe cleaned by scrapingor wire brushing andwashing with a commercialsolvent.

Adjustments


Refer to the Final Adjustmentsection of the Set-UpInstructionsto adjust the traction drive control. If youare not sure of proper adjustment, check as follows.• Drain the gasolineor place plasticfilm underthe

gas cap if the snow throwerhas already beenoperated.

• Tip the snowthrower forward and remove thefour self-tappingscrewsthat holdthe framecover underneaththe snowthrower.With the tractiondrive controlreleased, makesure that there is clearance between the frictionwheel and the friction plate in all positionsof theshift lever. See Figure22.

Augers

The augers are secured to the spiral shaft withtwoshear boltsand hex lock nuts. If you hit a foreignobject or ice jam, the snowthrower is designed sothat the boltswill shear.• If the augers will notturn, check to see ifthe

boltshave sheared. Replace ifnecessary. SeeFigure23. Two replacementshear boltsand hexlocknuts have been providedinGroup D of thehardwarepack which is illustratedon page 5.

• Reassemblenewskidshoeswiththe hardwareearlierremoved,Make sureto insertthecuppedsideofthe washeragainstthe skidshoesothattheskidshoe isadjusted to be level,

• To remove shave plate, removethe carriagebolts, bellevillewashers and hex nutswhichattach it to the snow throwerhousing,Reassemble new shave plate, making sureheads of the carriagebolts are to the insideofthe housing.Tighten securely.

• Slip belt between friction wheel and friction discplate and removethe belt. See Figure 28.

• Reassemble withnew drive belt.

Friction Wheel Rubber

The rubberonthe friction wheel is subjectto wear andshouldbe checkedafter the first 25 hoursof operationand periodicallythereafter. Replace the friction wheelrubber ifany signsof wear or crackingare found.• Drainthe gasolinefrom the snow thrower,or

place a pieceof plasticunderthe gas cap.• Tip the snowthrowerupand forward, so that it

restson the housing.• Remove four screws from the frame cover

underneaththe snow thrower(Figure 25).• Usinga 7/8" wrench to holdthe shaft, loosen,

butdo not completelyremove, the hex bolt andbell washer from the leftend of the shaft. SeeFigure 29.

• Lightlytap the head of the boltto dislodgetheball bearing from the rightside of the frame; thenremove the hex boltand the bellwasher from leftend of the shaft.

• Slidingthe shaft to theTight,remove the spacer,the sprocketand the friction wheel assemblyfrom the shaft.See Figure30.

• Remove the six screwsfrom the friction wheelassembly (three from each side). Remove thefriction wheel rubber from between the frictionwheel plate.

• Reassemblethenewfrictionwheelrubbertothefrictionwheelassemblytighteningthesixscrewsinrotationandwithequalforce.

• Positionthe frictionwheel assembly upontothe pin of the shiftrod assemblyand slide theshaft throughthe friction wheel. See Figure 30.

• Slide the shaft intothe hex I.D. of the sprocket,the spacer and the leftball bearing and securewiththe bell washer and hex bolt.

A WARNING: If any adjustmentsare made tothe engine whilethe engine is running(e.g.carburetor), keep clear of all movingparts.Be careful of heated surfacesand muffler.

If your snow thrower is leftunused for 30 days orlonger, it needs to be prepared for storage. Also, atthe end of the snow season, you should follow thesame set of instructionsend store the snow throwerproperly for the off-season. Proper storage ensureslonger life of the snow thrower.

Preparing Engine

A WARNING: Never store snow thrower withfuel in tank indoors or in poorlyventilatedareas, where fuel fumes may reach an openflame, spark or pilotlightas on a furnace,water heater, clothesdryer or gasappliance.

It is important to prevent gum depositsfromforming inessential fuel systempartsof theengine suchas the carburetor, fuel filter,fuel hose ortank duringstorage.Also experience indicatesthat alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol)can attract moisturewhich leads to separation and formation ofacids duringstorage.Acidic gas candamage the fuel system of an engine whileinstorage.

To avoid engine problems,the fuel system should beemptied before storagefor 30 days or longer.Followthese instructionsto prepareyour snowthrower forstorage:• Remove allgasolinefromthe carburetor and the

fueltank to prevent gum deposits from formingon these partsand causingpossible malfunctionof the engine.

Remove the spark plug and pour one (1) ounceof engineoil through the spark plughole intothecylinder. Place a rag over the hole. Crank theengine several times to distribute the oil.Replace spark plug.

Preparing Snow Thrower• When storingthe snowthrower inan

unventilatedor metal storage shed, care shouldbe taken to rustproofthe equipment. Usingalightoilor silicone,coat the equipment,especiallyany chains, springs,bearings andcables.
