INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on your purchase of theMotorola MINITOR III Alert Monitor. Motor-ola’s advanced technology offers unique fea-tures and benefits that set the industrystandards for performance, reliability, and styl-ing. The compact alert monitor is offered in avariety of models including:

• One-Frequency Standard.• One-Frequency Standard with VIBRA-

Page™.• Two-Frequency with Scan.• Two-Frequency with Scan and VIBRA-

Page.

Other options are available to provide a wideselection of features and special applications.

INSPECTION

Verify the model number and customer spe-cific information located on the label on theback of the alert monitor.

Inspect the equipment thoroughly. If any partof the equipment has been damaged in tran-sit, report the extent of the damage to thetransportation company immediately.

BATTERY TYPES

The alert monitor is powered by two recharge-able Nickel-Cadmium or two alkaline ‘AAA’size batteries.

BATTERY INSTALLATION

NOTE

For optimum performance, thenickel-cadmium batteries must befully charged before operating youralert monitor.

Install your batteries as follows:1.

Slide the battery door latch towards the topof the alert monitor to unlock the batterydoor.

2.

Push up on battery door, then swing open.

3.

Observing the correct polarities, insert thebatteries into the battery compartment.

4.

Close the battery door, push down intoplace, then slide the door latch to thelocked position.

CAUTION

If the batteries are improperlyinstalled, the alert monitor will notfunction and the batteries will notcharge.

STANDARD FEATURES AND CONTROLS (All Models)

ON/OFF Switch/Volume Control

The ON/OFF SWITCH/VOLUME CONTROLis a combined single control located on thetop of the alert monitor as shown above. Turn-ing the control knob a few degrees in a clock-wise direction applies power to the receiver,and an audio beep is sounded to indicate thatthe alert monitor is turned on. As the control isrotated in a clockwise direction, the volumelevel of any received message and alert toneis increased. Rotating the control in the oppo-site (counterclockwise) direction reduces theaudio level, and turns the alert monitor off.

Audible/Visual Alert Indicators

When your alert monitor is initially turned on,both the red and amber LEDs on the controlpanel light and an alert tone is sounded untilthe decoder circuit power-up is complete.Thereafter, whenever a properly encodedmessage is received, the red LED flashes andan audio alert is sounded. If the battery volt-age falls below the level required for reliableoperation, a low battery pulse tone soundsand the red LED flashes. Following any sub-sequent audio message, the momentary lowbattery pulse tone is repeated until the batter-ies are replaced.

If the function switch is set to a vibrate posi-tion, just the red LED flashes to indicate a lowbattery state.

Function Switch

According to the specific model ordered, thefunction switch will be configured to 2, 3, or 4positions. Different function modes (monitor/selective call, scan, etc.), can be configuredfor any position of the switch.

Channel Monitoring

When the function switch is set to a monitorposition, all voice communications on theselected channel is heard through thespeaker. When monitoring channel 1 or 2, allordered alert options are functional.

Reset Button

After receipt of a properly coded messageand after completion of that message, thealert monitor reverts to carrier squelch moni-toring. Press the reset button to return youralert monitor to the standby mode.

External Speaker Jack

When the alert monitor is used in high-noiseenvironments or when privacy is needed, anoptional Motorola approved lapel speaker orearpiece can be connected to the externalaccessory jack located on the top controlpanel. The jack is fitted with a protective plug.

NOTE

To prevent entry of dust and mois-ture, the plug should be insertedwhenever the external accessoryjack is not being used.

Belt Clip Feature

An integral part of the clip on the back of yourmonitor is a security hook. This hook isintended to allow easy removal of the alertmonitor, while at the same time preventing theunit from being pulled off your belt.

Scan (Two-Frequency Models Only)

All alert monitors that are equipped with twofrequencies are capable of scanning the twochannels for selective call or monitoring pur-poses. The scan feature may be programmedfor either priority scan or non-priority scan.This feature is factory installed as priorityscan. Non-priority scan is field programmable.

FACTORY OPTIONS

The options that are described in the para-graphs that follow are limited to those optionsthat affect the operation and/or functionalcharacteristics of your alert monitor. For acomplete list of available options, contact yourMotorola sales representative or authorizedpaging system dealer.

Fixed-Alert, Audio-Only Volume Control

When this option is installed, the alert tone isfactory preset (non-adjustable) at the maxi-mum volume level. Turning the volume controlvaries only the voice message volume level.

NOTE

Use of audio accessories is not rec-ommended with this option.

Time-Out Auto Reset

This feature allows the alert monitor to beautomatically reset after a predeterminedamount of time. This places the alert monitorback in standby mode to help conserve bat-tery power.

OPERATION

Perform the following steps to condition your alert monitor for operation:

1.

Set the FUNCTION switch to a tone-alertposition.

2.

Rotate the ON-OFF SWITCH/VOLUMECONTROL clockwise to turn on the alertmonitor. Eight short beep sounds occurand both LEDs light, indicating that poweris applied.

3.

Set the FUNCTION switch to a monitorposition.

4.

Listen for a transmission and adjust the vol-ume control to a comfortable listening level.

5.

If no transmission is heard, hold down theRESET button and adjust the backgroundnoise to a comfortable listening level. It maybe necessary to readjust the volume whena voice signal is present.

6.

Set the FUNCTION switch to the desiredoperating mode, i.e., selective call tone,selective call vibrate, monitor, scan, etc.

7.

Turn off the monitor by rotating the ON-OFFSWITCH/VOLUME CONTROL counter-clockwise until a click is heard and themechanical stop is reached.

SCAN OPERATION

Priority Scan

If the alert monitor is programmed for priorityscan, the frequency programmed as F1 isdesignated as the priority channel. If there isno traffic on F1, the alert monitor alternatelylistens to F1 and F2 until a transmission isdetected. If a transmission is detected on F1,the alert monitor stays on that channel untilthe transmission ceases. The alert monitoronly decodes tones on the F1 channel. Notones are decoded on the F2 channel.

If the alert monitor detects a transmission onF2, it stops on F2 then listens for transmis-sions on F1. Scanback time is programmableand can be set to 0.5, 1, or 2-second incre-ments. If a transmission is detected on F1, thealert monitor switches to F1 cutting off anytransmission on F2. When switching from F2to F1, the alert monitor listens for any tonesand alerts if the proper tones are detected. Itshould be noted that the detection of tones isvery dependent on the duration of the tonesent over the air. To ensure reliable alerting, itis recommended that this feature only beused when the first tone duration transmittedis one second or more.

During the scan mode, the amber LED blinksfast to indicate transmission on F1 and at aslower rate for transmission on F2.

Non-priority Scan

In the non-priority scan mode, the alert moni-tor alternately listens on F1 and F2 for anytransmission. A transmission on either chan-nel causes the alert monitor to stop on thatchannel until the signal disappears. In non-priority scan, the alert monitor decodes toneson either F1 or F2 provided the alert monitorhas listened to the appropriate channel at thecorrect time. However, it should be noted thatif the alert monitor is listening to traffic on F2and an alert is transmitted on F1, the alertmonitor will not hear that signal until the trans-mission on F2 is finished. Therefore, an emer-gency alert could be missed if the alertmonitor is listening to traffic on one channelwith tones being sent out on the other chan-nel.

BATTERY LIFE

Battery life depends upon the number of callsreceived, length of each call, capacity andcharge of the battery, and the mode of opera-tion.

When the battery voltage drops below anacceptable level, the red LED flashes and alow battery pulse tone is sounded. The LEDcontinues to flash and voice communicationdeteriorates until the batteries are replaced. Ifthe unit is recharged without being turned off,the low battery alert signal will continue untilthe RESET button is pressed.

Your alert monitor, properly handled, will pro-vide quality service for years. However,should it ever require service, call 1-800-548-9954 for instructions.
